"The Chain" main authors
 

Maybe this was already discussed, but I don't remember.

So Mick said in his book that "at the end" credits went to the whole band (about the Chain). But who really wrote the song?

According to Stevie in VH-1 Classic Albums, Lindsey and John were playing it but they didn't have a song, and Lindsey is very touchy about somebody involved in his songs (or something like that). But since there was no finished songs, Stevie came with lyrics and... Ok, is this accurate? Or there other sources that tell a different story?

And what that Chris put in that song? I think Mick didn't put anything. The bass section is obviously John (did he include something more?)

And why did they decide to put the whole band as authors?

The music was originally written by Christine called, "Keep *(*U(#" I can't remember the exact title. Then LB added music. Then Stevie wrote Lyrics. don't know what the other two did. Could be John and Mick Improv'ed the rest.

There's a long discussion of this on the Rumours DVD-Audio commentary track. They play the original version of "Keep Me There" (or a version close to the original) and talk about the evolution of the song.

The funny thing about it is that Stevie says that she at first didn't like John's bass breakdown/solo in the middle. She said when she first heard it, it immediately made her think, "THE MONSTERS ARE COMING!!!" :laugh:

I'm sure she likes it now. How could she not, after playing it every concert of every Mac tour for almost 30 years...? :nod: Not to mention that she even played it solo as a Street Angel tour encore...

This is confusing. The instrumental is termed Keep Me There and then the Reissue has Keep Me There (Butter Cookie). :shrug: Two different songs with the same title. I guess that is possible.... :cool:

I've heard her Keep Me There on a bootleg and it's very keyboard oriented. and nothing like Butter Cookie

I remember Stevie's comments about 'the monsters are coming' but I don't think she said she didn't like it, did she?

My understanding of the song-- it started out as a Chris tune (Keep Me There) and then John was 'mucking about' in the studio and played that cool bassline- and he remembered that Chris said, "oooo! I like that!' :woohoo: so they kept it as part of the song. As time went on they realized the main part of the song wasn't really working, but the bass solo/ending they all really did like. I think this major contribution was what got John the writing credit. Anyway-- LB then played a major role in re-structuring it, and Stevie contributed her lyrics. So hence we have the reason why J,C,L and S are listed as co-writers.

However I have no &$#% idea what Mick did to get a credit. maybe they just felt bad leaving him out LOL.

Exactly. I just wondered why two different songs were named the same...that's all. :)

I'm with ya. The only thing I can think of is that whomever did the bootlegs, misprinted it.

when you think about it all the members had a an input on each song, yes lindsey would say how he would like it played but inturn they all came up with there own interpretations on how to play a part adn this was on all songs not just the chain, jsut cause you write the liyrics dosent mean you write the song... all you stevie lovers out there

I have an old radio interview where Stevie said..."Lindsey wrote 'listen to the wind blow' - and thats it! I had written the 'if you dont love me now' part for a whole other song. But it went right along with the whole idea of the chain that kept us together...so I let them use it"
