By the way, I think Fleetwood Mac sounded amazing at the LA Forum in 2014. They looked fabulous as well. All of them.

I love Grace Slick. Jefferson Airplane made a lot of great music from '67 to '69. I still listen to those records.

But it gets a LOT spottier in the 70s. Like Stevie (probably), Grace had surgery to treat vocal nodules in the late 60s. In the years after that, she lost a lot of what made her vocals special -- her ability to wail and imitate the guitar.

Marty Balin sang most of Jefferson Starship's best known songs in the mid to late '70s. And Grace certainly played second fiddle to Mickey Thomas after rejoining the band in '81 after a three-year break.

Say what you will about the songs, but it was kinda of cool to see and hear Grace on MTV and the radio in the '80s, thanks to "Winds of Change" (a pretty cool tune), "We Built This City," and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

But I was glad to see her ditch Starship in time for the JA reunion in '89 (the album had some bright moments, including Grace's "Freedom").

But at 50, when she was looking better than she had in years, Grace elected to bow out gracefully. She quit dying her hair and trying to defy aging, then later had some health issues. It's cool that she's found a creative outlet in painting, but it would have been nice to hear more from her in the 90s (after synth rock went out of style and she could have done something grittier - as her duet with Linda Perry demonstrated).

She's always been a blunt instrument, based on a lot of what I've heard about her history. So I'm not surprised to hear her tell it like she thinks it is.

But Stevie is an exception. In her 50s and 60s, she's managed to keep me far more interested in her music than a lot of acts I no longer follow as closely.

I don't know how long she'll be able to keep up the blonde witchy woman look, but it's a persona that's allowed her to age more gracefully than Madonna. It's amazing what Madonna can still do on stage, but she needs to start thinking about what she'll do for the next stage of her career.

Because we can. It's our place to bitch about stuff; but don't let some interloper on the street bad-mouth our band, those'd be fighting words. Fleetwood Mac as a whole, nor the individual members, are above criticism.

And, really, if you HAVE to add the qualifying line "for their age" or "all things considered" to a comment about how somebody looks, then it becomes a back-handed compliment. :nod:

So, I definitely understand where Grace was coming from in her comments. Did I like reading them? Not necessarily, since I have that knee-jerk response to anything negative about Fleetwood Mac (except for when I go on a rant), but she's got the right to voice her opinion, for now anyway; who knows what the potential fascists in the government may try to pull on us sheep in the near future.

Even if it does make her look jealous and bitter.

On another recent video I could see that she was trying to copy Kylie Minogue. A few years ago Madonna was showing her age. I don't know how she looks like she does in recent videos. No doubt she is fitter than most half her age, but they probably photo edit frame by frame. Every single HD image.

I would like it if she did another more mature album like 'Ray Of Light' which I thought was okay. 'Mature' doesn't have to mean boring or crusty. But after a certain age you need to show some substance as well as style and who you truly are.

Whereas Stevie is moving into a more mentoring role with younger artists, Madonna still tries to directly compete with them. Maybe what happened to her idol Bowie might have an effect on her. There was about ten years age difference between them not that much really.

I was a bit disappointed that Grace seemed to be saying it's okay for male rock stars to get older and still be on stage but not women. But personal decision everyone has to make for themselves.

I think that many artists of that era would now be thinking about their futures. No question in my mind, Bowie did the right thing slowing down and spending time with his family in his last years.
