Interestingly, Shirley Eikhard also covered "Say You Love Me", which was actually released as a single in Canada before the original recording by Fleetwood Mac. At one point, both versions were actively competing with each other on the charts. On the August 28, 1976 chart, Fleetwood Mac's version jumped up from #69 to #55, surpassing Eikhard's version in the process, which dropped from #45 to #58.

Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" performed considerably worse in Canada compared to the other singles from the White Album ("Over My Head: peak position of #9; "Rhiannon": peak position of #4; "Say You Love Me": peak position of #29). It's pretty likely that the moderate chart success of Eikhard's version (peaked at #34) tempered the chart run of Fleetwood Mac's original.

And it wasn’t covered by just anyone. Shirley Eikhard is a great songwriter herself. She is best known for penning “Something to Talk About,” which Bonnie Raitt made famous in the early 90s.

I was going to ask How did the band allow that? I mean, at that time Fleetwood Mac was re emerging as a popular band so any "interference" could have been harmful for their popularity. There have been better covers (specially according to the public) than the original. Close to You, What's Love Got To Do It, Nothing Compares 2 U, etc.

On the other hand, it could help to impulse the band songs, but it was a risky move. Anyway, my doubt was, she needed the band permission, didn't she? Or just the record company? Or just Christine (and BN in the case of DLMDA)?

How the heck have I have a been a fan of this band for 25 years (a good 15 of those years practically a fanatic!) and i'm just learning about this now. Mind blown.
