I reviewed all of Tusk last night, and i realized my vote would have to be:
Walk a Thin Line
By the way, Rumours 77, Can Tusk have 2 survivors since it's a double album?I think that is an idea that should definitely be implemented....

It's just that in this case your rhetorics are on the same level as Dissention's "WISYA" bashing. What raises tempers in you is bound to raise tempers in others as well. No matter how eloquently the Beaver County Librarian might type them down, they're still spurred by the emotional response to the piece, and quite possibly by the critique that has been thrown at one of the most esoteric moments of your preferred member in the band, a song that you have a deep emotional connection with. But whatever.

Earlier you stated that "there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song". How come Bob Josef then states on this page http://starling.rinet.ru/music/fmacc.htm#Tusk that "he can suck you in anyway, with the title track, "Save Me A Place," "Walk a Thin Line," because the sound is so compelling."? Obviously the aural experiences of "Save Me A Place" from both of you differ like night and day.
In the Tango In The Night survivor thread you criticized "Ricky", even typed down it's lyrics to show how "anemic" it is and how there's not that much going on in that song either. Considering how you are a person who takes lyrical contributions to be very important to a song, it is not surprising to hear an opinion like this from you.
So, um, what makes "That's All For Everyone" so outstanding then? There's not much lyrical content there either, now is there? Of course, if you prefer to hear less than two minutes of a musical & lyrical loop than four minutes of one (="Ricky") then I do understand your statement.
"Save Me A Place", "That's All For Everyone" and "Ricky" are in essence relatively esoteric pieces with sparse lyrics. The message of these songs reaches beyond the superficial lyrical content. Whatever simplicity there seems to be, it is always shaded by something complex and carefully thought-out. The same I can say for the likes of "When I See You Again". The things the songs are trying to convey may be cryptic for some, but they can all be related to on a deep emotional level. Of course it might take a bulldozer, a battle-axe and the willpower of Mohammed to get to that point, but whatever.

I don't know how it comes off, but I never take personal offense to anyone not liking "When I See You Again."
I think the song is brilliant, and to be totally honest, I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about it. I'd be perfectly content being the one and only person in this entire world who likes it. I'm a snob in those regards. If I like a song, my opinion is the only one that matters to me.
But I'm fully prepared to discuss its merits, and to explain why I love it so much... without just falling into the "because I like it, that's why" trap.

And it's the same thing with "Save Me A Place." I'm not going to just vote it off, or say I dislike it, without offering an explanation as to why.

I'm not saying anyone else should dislike it... it just surprises me that it's liked more than "That's All For Everyone." A song that I feel, while lyrically simple (in the best of ways, mind you), has a lot of depth to it, both vocally and instrumentally.
But at the end of the day, it's not something I lose any sleep over.

Also, about the lyrics thing... I thought I've stated on many occasions that a song doesn't have to be lyrics-heavy for me to enjoy it. I am a Lindsey fan, and most of his songs are not lyrics-heavy. But yeah, if you're going to make me choose between someone who tends to have sparse lyrics, and someone whose songs are lyrics-dominated, then I'll take the latter... but that's just the way I lean, and it doesn't at all mean that I don't still like and appreciate the former style.

I also thought I explained why I feel the way I do about "Ricky" (which is, for the record, a song I like).
It's just that I didn't feel it was strong enough for 'Tango,' as it is. "Everywhere" is also a relatively simple song, lyrically, and I love that song... and I know you have a deep distaste for it ("housewife music," and all that). In the case of "Ricky," I just feel that, at nearly 5 minutes long, it doesn't have enough going on in it to merit a spot on the album. I think that's a reasonable enough opinion.

And yet you still always speak up whenever the usual "WISYA" brawl comes up. Honestly, is it really all about keeping the precious balance between Lindsey and Stevie for you?
Do not try to pretend that when you see a particularly harsh critique of "When I See You Again" your emotions are not stirred. Random opinions from random, unknown posters shouldn't bother anyone; when you see an established member of the board making a statement like that several times in a row then at least I would take it seriously.
Your entire paragraph there could knock over your "everyone in this world can relate to Stevie's songs, if they really try" theory.

Remember this thread? http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showth...1&page=1&pp=15 This is where Mylittledemon stated something like 'Time sucks donkey's balls' and made a few people angry because of that.
Now let's look at what you have been writing earlier in this survivor thread:
Quote:

Sorry. "Save Me A Place" IS musical sludge.
Quote:

Other than the harmonies, there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song. It's about as interesting as watching molasses roll up a hill in June.
Quote:

It makes me want to stick my head in an oven. Or slit my wrists. Or get a root-canal. Or watch paint dry.
Quote:

"Save Me A Place" isn't esoteric... it's just boring.
Quote:

"Save Me A Place" sucks. I can't help it.
I'm not trying to be spiteful or purposefully bitchy... it just sucks.
So quite honestly, I do not think this is anything different from what Mylittledemon stated in that thread I linked to. Only in a couple of places do I see a thing like "in my opinion", or something like that. Otherwise you're stating the thing like you were stating a fact, a thing ChiliD criticizes Mylittledemon of in the that particular thread.
Traditionally on this board certain members have reminded other members of the fact that saying something sucks is quite different from saying one doesn't care for the song/album/whatever (see Wetcamelfood's post, the last one in the linked thread). I understand this personally. While it's easy to say that everyone on this board speaks for themselves, and that everything people type here should be taken with a grain of salt, it's not as simple in reality. Things like "IMO" are usually put there to cool things down.
In fact, I have even seen you criticizing certain people (you know who I'm referring to) for typing down similar things you just did in a thread, about a particular song. Which is why it was surprising to see statements like this from you several times in a row.
I'm not even that moved by "Save Me A Place". I'm just here to speak for the people who obviously are tremendously moved by it. I believe they weren't that bothered by your opinion on it. I also believe they can speak for themselves, Dissention and Kate have shown to me that they sure can and will do it when they feel the need for it.
But the weirdest thing was that you actually answered to every one of their comments, and even still felt the need to add the obligatory "SMAP sucks" statement, dressed in various guises. So you hate the song? Why bother saying it multiple times within a short time-frame? In fact, it was only when I came around with my usual long-winded nose-picking that you started to tone that opinion down.
Quote:

But at the end of the day, it's not something I lose any sleep over.
Yes, well, I'll soon go off and start turning in my bed and enter work tired after having wetted my sheets because of this demon exorcising.
You don't care for the song? Fine. That never bothered me, it was your rhetorics that did.
Quote:

I also thought I explained why I feel the way I do about "Ricky" (which is, for the record, a song I like).
Which you did do, but we'd have to have a musicological analysis on why "Ricky" supposedly has less going on in it than "That's All For Everyone". But of course, tastes are tastes, and "writing about music is like dancing about architecture".
Quote:

"Everywhere" is also a relatively simple song, lyrically, and I love that song... and I know you have a deep distaste for it ("housewife music," and all that).
I do not have a deep distaste for any Fleetwood Mac song. As a great man once said: "it's a stupid thing to do, to hate music. You either care for it or you don't."
If I thoroughly hated "housewife music", I would also have to hate "Warm Ways", "Dreams", "Gypsy", "Only Over You", "Mystified", "Soul Drifter", "Nights In Estoril", "Friend", etc, most of those songs that I truly love.
I have learned to like "Everywhere" and it never took that long, at first though I felt it threatened my values of good music and my appreciation of Fleetwood Mac. It isn't all that different from what Chris did before, it was just the utter minimalism of it that initially seemed inappropriate. That's something that Chris rarely tried, maybe that's why it's still not too convincing. But a heartfelt thing it is, all the same. If I called it "housewife music", I never intended that statement to be a bashing one. Did I not call "Honey Hi" a group-sex song? Did I not call "Family Man" and "When I See You Again" self-parodies? Those are my honest opinions of them, no matter how goofball they may seem for some. Make of those what you want. But the overtones in the statements I have not intended as negative ones.
But, whatever.

Claudia 08-16-2004 04:33 PM

My vote goes to 'Not That Funny' again. I just don't like the song much.

ryan8472 08-16-2004 04:44 PM

Am I not allowed to defend the merits of a song I like? Do I have to give any weight to someone else's opinion, in order to still be allowed to disagree?

If someone says something sucks, and I disagree, then I'm going to open my mouth. Just as I expect someone to disagree with me when I dislike a song that they like.

The debates and the disagreements have never been an issue. ;)

Not at all. I said that it doesn't matter to me if I'm the only one who likes a song... I didn't say that no one else is ABLE to like the song.
Big difference. ;)

I could just say that I'm only being funny. :) I mean, everyone tells me to lighten up, and just take comments in a humourous way... so why can't I try my hand at that?
I guess I can't branch out a little, and try a different tact... I don't wear it well apparently. :o Ah well.

While I didn't add "in my opinion" to every one of my statements, one of my initial comments was, "it's the only clunker on the album, in my opinion."

But we'll fix the others...

"Sorry. "Save Me A Place" IS musical sludge, IMO."

"Other than the harmonies, there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song, in my opinion. It's about as interesting as watching molasses roll up a hill in June, IMHO.

"In my opinion, it makes me want to stick my head in an oven. Or slit my wrists. Or get a root-canal. Or watch paint dry."

"'Save Me A Place' isn't esoteric... it's just boring, IMVHO."

"'Save Me A Place' sucks, IMO. I can't help it, it's my opinion.
I'm not trying to be spiteful or purposefully bitchy... it just sucks, IMHO. "

There we go. :) ;)

Darling, I get criticized and reprimanded for calling some of Stevie's songs "garbage," it's just par for the course these days.

Save Me A Place is a fantastic song. He took very minimalistic elements and somehow managed to make an emotionally compelling song out of them. In this case, I think the song benefits from not having a whole mess of words to it, he says it all in the few he chose to use and the accompanying music. Regardless if other people like it or think it's "sludge," I do and it's one of my favorites for many reasons.

I'm not offended at someone expressing their views on it, even if they hate it, but I have to wonder why people who criticize me for such harsh language when referring to tunes use that same harsh language when referring to SMAP. The language doesn't bother me one bit because I'm just as harsh. But don't call me out next time or I'll have to throw the "hypocrisy" word around and eventually put a "Rescind the Strike!" in my signature. ;)

It's exceedingly funny how things get twisted so.

I've never called anyone on the way they critique songs, but rather the way they talk to others. As I've said... until I'm blue in the face... it's one thing to say a song sucks, it's another thing to say that someone who likes it (or dislikes it) isn't smart enough to know better, or leave them to feel as if their intelligence is being called into question by harsh comments and implications.

I don't care what's said about the songs... they don't have feelings. I care about the people here, and their feelings.

To me, whenever anyone makes a VALUE judgment on something, they are stating an opinion. I dont need "IMO" to tell me that.

It does annoy me, however, when someone OVERLTLY PRETENDS that their judgment isn't an opinion, but fact. You know, the posts that have injected "No question about it" or "You can't deny this" or something to that effect. When such statements are not there, implicitly, we can take it to mean that the poster understands that what they are saying is an opinion that is not shared by everyone.

But then again, that's JMHO. ;)

(Sorry, couldn't resist, lol).

Exactly! The whole "My opinions on ____ are shared by all smart people" (implied: because I am just that infallibly brilliant) is so laughable. Last time I checked, having an exaggerated-to-the point-of-delusional sene of self-importance didn't require too many brain cells. Quite the opposite.
