Not as far as I am aware; it is merely a comment by someone who conducts literary analysis for a living.

Yes. All of the writers have written songs where one line is about X and then next about Y, and it might very well create a bigger story than was originally intended. Hell, I've done things like that.

I hope you're happy, smackers. You've made Mark Ulpian hate me. :distress:

On another note (an E flat in honor of the Eroica), you remember that wacky Esther & Moosh? Or that unhinged jaydee?

Well, the quotes Mick attributes to Stevie are interesting. One has her saying to Lindsey, "You're breaking my _______ heart" and the other is "You'll never love anybody but yourself." Whatever triggered the argument, it ended up not being about the band really. But Stevie said that herself. She said that that was the day they really broke up and everything they had never said to each other before -- everything they had held back, because they might reunite -- they didn't hold back anymore.

Michele

Yeah, that's what I mean. It seems like the whole fight turned quickly from Lindsey leaving the band to being about Lindsey and Stevie breaking up - again. In the video that started the topic, Stevie says "because of all the guilt I had for not leaving the band"... so what is she talking about? SnL had some kind of deal worked out from the beginning to leave at a specific point or they were going to leave at this point and she backed out?

I take it to mean that she didn't leave after Bella Donna became a huge success and just concentrate on her solo career.

I always took it as Angel69, but now...well, CADreaming you make me hesitate...you know, you could be right...maybe they had a kind of deal, or maybe Lindsey began to complain that joining the band had spoiled their relationship and that quitting was the only way to solve their problems...
I don't know, but now I can't stop thinking about it hahahaha

I doubt that Lindsey and Stevie had some sort of a deal put together if one, the other or both left the band. I think it's a case of Stevie jumping on her high horse and acting like she was doing Fleetwood Mac a favor by sticking around rather than jumping ship and leaving. John says it best in this documentary, "Everything Fleetwood Mac did to her was bad... It's kind of boring... and untrue."

Yeah, I see what you mean...but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities to think that SnL did have a deal when they first joined as a couple - and as the duo of BN - to get the notoriety in FM for a year or two and then go back to BN. It makes sense to me that Lindsey would have only agreed to do FM if Stevie agreed they could go back to doing their thang. Plus, I could see Stevie making that her arguing point for joining the band in the first place - "Linds, they're established, they've got a contract (which, by the way, if you haven't noticed we don't have), and they've made like a bazillion more albums than we have. Not that our stuff isn't SO much more superior - because I know it is hon since you're a genius and all that. Besides, I mean we can totally add something to this band that they desperately need. And, really we would be helping them out more than they would be helping us out. Let's give 'em two years and then we'll go back to BN. Pretty please."

Besides, I can't see why she would say she felt "guilt" over not leaving to go solo. Lindsey's solo album came out the same year as hers and he didn't leave. Neither did Christine leave when she could have or should have for all intents and purposes. I think if that was the time frame then the guilt could have been divided three ways. But, she made it sound like it was solely between she and Lindsey - this guilt she felt. That's why it sounded like a BN deal to me.

But, who knows? I'm just speculating.

Too funny.

I just think she misspoke. Well, actually I think she was talking in Stevie speak, so it was normal for her, but not what anyone else would have said. I think she just means the guilt that made her stay with FM, not guilt because she didn't leave.

But yes I also think that she and Lindsey might have had a conversation or two about staying with FM long enough to get established and then returning to BN. Stevie said that it was a struggle to keep the relationship together as long as she did. So, I could see her using that as an enticement for him to help cement things together just a little longer.

This is how I always took that statement of hers. I don't really think there is another way she could have meant it. Look, maybe at first they thought of leaving the Mac and going back to Buckingham Nicks (you know, before the whole Mac thing became a success) but after the success of the first album and especially once Rumours came out, there was obviously no way they were going to just leave and go back to Buckingham Nicks.

These two have some of the biggest egos in music. I think Stevie means exactly what it looks like, "hey, I went back to the Mac after my solo thing even though I was on top of everything right then and could have just remained on my own!" For Lindsey to turn around 6 years later and pull out of a planned tour after recording a successful album just infuriated her because she felt that she put her own plans on hold for Fleetwood Mac and how dare he not do the same and screw them all over.

Keep in mind that at the time this documentary was from, Stevie wasn't real big on Fleetwood Mac at all and probably wasn't going to look back on things (especially the late 80's/early 90's era) with a real positive point of view.

You wrote your point so funny and novel-like that it's so great to believe it hahaha. (I have a "gone in the wind"-like scene with L&S in my mind).
And another "crystal vision" :D : lindsey singing "but if you don't love me now, you will never love me again, I can still hear you saying you will never break the chain". Stevie, you prefer to stay in FM, not to break the chain than being a musical duo with me, than being my other part in all aspects?
my god, re-interpretating songs can be quite dangerous because you may step in the kingdom of the untrue.

That was apparently their intention -- or at least that's what they told the press, as indicated by an article from a Birmingham entertainment rag I posted here some years ago.

The actual problem...

There is just a lot of Stevie hating because she is that great. For all of her "out-there-ness" she remains THE MOST successful member of that band. Just something to remember while you are all being bitter and crying for your wolf, LB... Who I also adore, but you all are ready to put him on the label for GREATNESS magazine... It's laughable. So I will, "HA!"

Err, Lindsey is great. If you are measuring "success" in terms of number of solo albums sold, then no, he doesn't sell as well as Stevie has. Doesn't make him any less of a musician - he's just not as commercially appealing on his own as Stevie is.

I love Stevie as much as the next person, but I have a lot of respect for Lindsey and his work, which he absolutely deserves. And Stevie and the rest of the Mac owe him a lot for the hard work he's put into the FM albums - without that work, those albums wouldn't be what they are.

I have no doubt that he can be very accessible to the mainstream when he puts his mind to it, but he's always appeared to be much more content doing what he wants to do, how he wants to do it, whether it sells a ton of albums or it sells no albums. And to me, that's pretty damn successful - being able to do what you want to do for a living, how you want to do it. That's definitely something I aspire to, even though I'm not a musician.

Besides, the only person I see being bitter here is you. Everyone else was having a good time. Project much? :)

The "guilt" one feels when they walk away from any relationship. Im sure many of us have walked away from situations (whether good, bad or indifferent) and have felt guilt over doing so.
