Rolling Stones lead a record midyear concert revenue report for 2015

Halfway into 2015, the picture couldn’t be brighter in the concert industry, as midyear box office results point to a possible record year in the live music business.

Concert industry tracking publication Pollstar reports that fans bought a record 18.8-million tickets for the top 100 grossing tours of North America for a combined take of $1.43 billion during the first six months of this year. That’s a 39% increase over the same period last year in terms of revenue and a 15% increase over the midyear record set during the first half of the 2013.

The Rolling Stones are at the top of the heap in earnings, pulling in $80.7 million with just 10 shows on the group’s Zip Code Tour.

But Garth Brooks is No. 1 in terms of tickets sold, with fans snapping up 1.2-million tickets to his first tour in 17 years, almost triple the Stones’ total sales of 452,041. Brooks' shows generated $79.9 million in box office revenue, which falls just behind the Stones because of the drastic difference in average ticket prices.

The average price for Stones' tickets was a whopping $178.44, compared with $66.23 for Brooks' 74 performances in 13 cities, easily the cheapest ticket among the top 10 grossing tours.

Fleetwood Mac’s reunion tour with long-absent member Christine McVie ranks third in Pollstar’s list at $65.9 million from 41 shows in 40 cities. Country superstar Kenny Chesney is fourth at $55.8 million, followed by U2 at $40.3 million.

The rest of the midyear top 10 for North America: Maroon 5 ($39.8 million), Neil Diamond ($37.7 million), Taylor Swift ($35.6 million), Elton John ($29.8 million) and Bette Midler ($28.2 million).

If there’s an area of concern for the industry's boom numbers it’s that the results fall back to a model of heritage acts dominating the box office. In recent years, several younger performers have made inroads into the upper reaches of the top-grossing tour rankings, suggesting that there will be another generation to take over when (and if) the '60s and '70s rock veterans retire.

But so far this year, Swift and Maroon 5 are the only acts that established careers roughly in the past decade to finish in the top 10.

In worldwide earnings, teen heartthrob band One Direction leads the pack with $107.7 million during the first half of the year. Fleetwood Mac is No. 2 globally with a gross of $92 million, followed by the Stones ($80.7 million), Brooks ($79.9 million) and Paul McCartney ($64.5 million) rounding out the top five.

In other words the single biggest cash grab of the nearly half century existence of the band..and not a note played of anything released in more than 28 years.

Not bad for greatest hits tour.Why bother recording a new album.They can make a killing just touring singing old tunes.Yea .It sounds boring for us fans.I would figure by now they flooded the market with concerts and concert goers are getting tired hearing the name FM.I guess I'm wrong.


Just look at the other classic artist and bands like the Stones,Paul McCartney,U2,Neil Diamond,The Who and my moms favorite Bette Midler and other older artist are still raking in the bread.I have no idea if they are supporting new albums or not.

Stones, McCartney, The Who Neil Diamond are all well into their 70s if not 80s. FM are in their 70s or late 60s. they are 60s and 70s bands.

U2 are in their early 50s. yeah they made it big while very young, their breakthrough was in the 80s. but the difference in age between Bono and Eddie Vedder (who just turned 50!) or Nirvana guys (so 90s bands) is less than difference in age between Christine and Lindsey. U2 and grunge guys are 20 years, a whole generation, younger...

so when last week we saw those One Direction backstage pics on instagram, it was 3 music generations that you had there all together backstage, in one photo - FM, Pearl Jam, and 1D. :woohoo:

Me too.I always forget the 90's decade which is 20 plus years now.I do enjoy Bono and his gang.I do like Pearl Jam,Maroon 5.Smashing Pumpkins.Dave Matthews Band and Hootie and the Blowfish which Darius Rucker is country now.

Also we have Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga out on the road.

I have a good feeling that FM will keep on trucking way in their 70's touring with or without new tunes.We are so lucky that Christine came back.

Take That are the UK version of 'Old Men On The Block'.
I always thought they were a bit naff the first time around in the early 90's but they came back as a 'man band' around 10 years ago and since then they've actually been rather good.

One Direction are the highest-earning touring act of 2015 so far, bringing in $107.7 million.

The band played 33 shows in 22 cities in June, generating around $4.9m a concert, according to Pollstar’s mid-year report. Fellow CAA-represented act Fleetwood Mac came in second place with $92m from 56 shows.
The Rolling Stones were at No.3 – and No.1 in North America – with $80.7m in gross earnings from just 10 concerts at an average ticket price of $178.44.
The Top 5 was rounded off by Garth Brooks on $79.9m and Paul McCartney, who topped the single concert grossest list with three shows at the Tokyo Dome which generated $21.75m between them.

2015 Pollstar Year End Top 20 Worldwide Tours

Taylor Swift, AC/DC, One Direction, U2 and Foo Fighters make up the top five positions on Pollstar’s Top 20 Worldwide tours for 2015. The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and Ed Sheeran are also among the major earners.

Swift was the top touring artist in the world with gross ticket sales in excess of $250 million as she played to nearly 2.3 million fans.

While that is not a global record, the fact that nearly $200 million of that total came from North America dates means she smashed the previous mark of $162 million set by the Rolling Stones in 2005.


The Top 20 Worldwide Tours alone grossed more than $2.2 billion and sold over 24 million tickets at an average ticket price of $91.74. That represents $200 million and over 4 million tickets more than in 2014.


AC/DC came back and did the biggest tour in its history while Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran made the Top 10 for the first time with record outings of their own.

Although The Rolling Stones placed 10th on the chart, the band had the highest average ticket – $174.50. Second is Paul McCartney’s $155.76 followed by Madonna (127.55), Fleetwood Mac ($125.61), Elton John ($124.49) and U2 ($118.35). Luke Bryan’s $55.48 average ticket price was the lowest on the chart.

All figures are for the 2015 calendar year and represent extensive research and estimates for all dates worked. Pollstar has complete detailed information on most tours although some acts, most notably AC/DC, Garth Brooks, and Kevin Hart, required significant projections in order to be ranked.

So Fleetwood Mac grossed $125.1 million to come in at #6 on the year-end list. Not bad at all! So the On With The Show tour has grossed approximately $200 million based on 118 shows according to Pollstar.

I'm pretty sure that makes it their most successful tour to date. Amazing numbers!

I thought Fleetwood Mac would be higher. 😒

Their ticket prices were amongst the highest and they played a lot of shows. It seems as if they played much smaller venues though compared to many/most of the other big touring artists. I think that's what gave them a slightly lower overall gross than those above them.

But Fleetwood Mac was an event. Christ they got beat by the Foo Fighters. Uggg. I thought they would be in top 3. 😓

I suppose its better for us fans- much better to see them in a mid-sized arena than a big huge stadium. It was an event- at least they got lauds of plaudits from reviewers for putting on a great show.
Out of all those on the list the only ones I'd really like to have seen are the Stones, McCartney and possibly U2. At a push maybe Madonna, Elton, Billy and Neil. I like a lot of Foo Fighters stuff but its just too samey for me- not sure I'd fancy a full concert. Ditto AC/DC. I really don't get the appeal of Ed Sheeran standing on a stage playing to 20,000 people.

Agreed. There are many artists I like, whose music I buy avidly, but only a few whose live appeal is an experience of its own, aside from the quality of their recordings.
