True. I don't feel like any less of a fan because I didn't go to any shows on this tour. The tickets in my market were at least $150 and I didn't feel like shelling out that kind of money in this economy for a product that I'd seen many times over in 2003 ( and had the time of my life doing BTW).

But that's not what he said. He said the only way they could do a monetarily viable tour in the next year or so would be to call it a "Farewell Tour." And I think you're misunderstanding where Luke is coming from. He is stating the facts as he sees and knows them from being in the business. That's all. It's nothing against you, I don't think.

Well, I remember reading someone in this thread saying that these sales were pathetic particularly for a "farewell" tour. But now I can't find that original comment. . .

99.9% of ALL artists, be they "classic" or new, have not released an album a year, let alone two, in over two decades!!
This may have been the norm in the '70's, but it went the way of the dinosaur in the early '80's, and I GUARANTEE you will NEVER see it again, at least not through the major labels!!

Also, Luke has a point. Everyone in Mac is 60+ and they haven't had a big hit album for over 10 years. They have to cut the crap and make something really noteworthy if they expect to match the Unleashed tour results... let alone surpass them. It's going to get harder and harder for them to be successful as time goes on just because they are fading more and more. As Stevie lovingly said on Destiny Rules, the typical Mac generation isn't "sitting around smoking dope and watching Billboard to see what they need to buy as their next record!" Even when Stevie and Mac's album quality has been questionable, they were still able to sell because they were somewhat current. They don't have that benefit anymore.

Which basically means that if they're going to put the work into getting another album out, they better as hell make it worth it. Because if they were disappointed with SYW sales, it's not going to be any better this time around. We all love them and will buy anything they put out without a question, but we are a very select group of people, people. They need to work ten times harder to make even a fraction of the impression that they used to make on the music scene. So cut the **** and get writing and recording! They can't go around doing greatest hits tours forever. I will follow this band to my grave so yes, I would be at those shows.... but I'd do it a bit spitefully if they let whatever is left of their creative potential go down the drain. They aren't getting any younger, either.

BRILLIANTLY stated!!!!

I think the cohesiveness lacking in SYW can absolutely be attributed to the fact that everyone in the band attempted to join forces after being on completely separate paths for what 4-5 years? Maybe a little less? SYW was the first time in a long time they were really coming from four absolutely different places (not to mention the first time without Christine.) Obviously, a break in this duration is not uncommon for this band, but prior to SYW, well maybe at least prior to the Dance, they sort of were all coasting along their separate lives, but sort of at a similar pace. But in 2001-2002, at 50 something, they are all at such different milestones - Stevie in unattached and focused on her solo career, Lindsey is newly married with a growing family, Mick has his new girls, and John is raising a teenager but would probably rather be sailing. You get where I'm going. They were all really doing such different things in their lives, which probably wasn't so true when creating studio albums before this, and if it was, probably wasn't as evident as it was when creating SYW. Really, other then being in a band with legendary history what was common amongst them at that point? All this, plus the experience of doing an album 25 years past their heyday must have contributed to the lack of synergy and resulted in what seemed to be a collaboration of two artist's solo albums.

But, maybe, just maybe, if they can take the momentum that they have had by working with each other over the past year and being intertwined with each other's lives, and truly believe that a studio album can be a positive experience, we can see something wonderful from them in the future.

Once again, VERY well said!!!;)

What they should do is work on the next album as if it will be the last album the public ever gets to hear from them, because at their ages, it very well may be.....

That's right! But that is the essence of the challenge:

1. It has to be great
2. It has to be made quickly

But, seriously, I just think they should sit in a studio recording music and releasing it until it's the end.

Not necessarily. My favorite current artist, Joseph Arthur, put out no fewer than 5 albums last year. All with a completely different feel. And Joseph is said to have a backlog of hundreds of unreleased songs. He is on a major label, and writes songs for movies and TV shows on top of his album releases; all while juggling a side band, the Lonely Astronauts, and making guest appearances on albums. He also is a visual artist, and even has his own section in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Yes, there is a formula that modern day record companies prefer to lock people into... but if you are headstrong enough, you can certainly break through that.

And we know that Stevie alone has a backlog of around 50 unreleased songs (who knows, maybe much more). Lindsey put out two solo records within the last few years, so we know the potential is there for the kids to be more prolific. They just chose to let their personal issues and egos get in the way of new creativity. Actually, I don't think it fair to say it's the entire band's fault. I'm sure Mick and John wouldn't protest to working more often. And Lindsey seems to be enjoying his newfound 'boutique' success immensely, and is becoming extremely prolific. I think the blame lies squarely with Ms Nicks. She just can't get over 30 year old issues with Lindsey. More importantly, I don't think she is taking declining sales and being an aging sex symbol very well either.

The reason why I may seem negative so often is because I'm lamenting all the lost momentum that this band has. I think Stevie's and Lindsey's latest solo albums are the best of their respective careers. I think their individual songwriting talents are just getting better with age. They have so much potential, and it's wasted because of REALLY silly reasons. They just throw up their arms and surrender to drama, and they're in their 60s... it's more than a bit ridiculous. The really subpar product we got from SYW for these DUMB reasons just angers me. Trust me, I love the band and will until my last breath. It's because of this love of the band and it's members that I get so bent outta shape. I simply want more GOOD music dammit!!! :D

I voted yes mainly because I think if FM started in January and really worked their asses off, they could definitely get a new album out in late 2010 or early 2011. Will they do it? Who knows. FM is completely unpredictable and since they aren't a new band, they don't really have to be in a hurry to get a new album out in order to get their name out there. So I don't know if they will get one out, but I do know one thing and that is that 2010 needs to be the beginning of a new era for FM and Stevie. Stevie did Crystal Visions CD, tour and Soundstage and FM did their Unleashed tour and both were all based on their greatest hits. I think 2009 needs to be the end of all the reflective greatest hits stuff. I think in 2010 they need to hit the studio and make a kick ass record, that not only appeals to their die hard fans but also to a whole new generation of people. They need a new album, new setlist, and new marketing. Fleetwood Mac needs to be on the radio, they need to be doing interviews, they need to be on MTV and VH1, they need to be on the cover of Rolling Stone and on the cover of Alternative Press. They need a twitter, a myspace, and a continually updated website. They need advertisements on the TV's at Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy. They need to stop acting like the superband that they are and assuming they already have a fanbase. They can use their legacy to their advantage, but that can't be their main focus and they really need to get their name out there. I am 20 years old and I feel that FM has never been marketed to me. If I hadn't been a big time FM fan for years, I probably wouldn't have even known FM was on tour right now. I feel they miss so many marketing opportunities its ridiculous. So even though I desperately want a new FM record as soon as possible, I think they would be better off going into the studio and working their asses off to make a kick ass record and then go out and market this record and how amazing it is for a few months before its release to really build up anticipation for it. They need to make their album the most anticipated album of 2011. And all it takes it some really good music and some really good marketing. It doesn't matter if they saturated the touring market with Unleashed, the music store market has been severely depleted of FM for years, and if they can make the new album sell they will have no problem with a new tour.

So, pardon me for being a "Debbie Downer" for considering things like "facts" & "trends" and impersonal concepts like "over-saturation" when discussing the band's future- it doesn't make me any less of a fan. ESPECIALLY since its generally accepted by most (not just me) that the band basically exists in 2009 to make money... and where do 99.9% of all bands make most of their money?

I don't think the band is just in it to make money, but I find the objective bases for your conclusions very convincing. It's certainly a dollars game. We know it and Azoff knows it.

Maybe they can do the sheds next summer, if they have some product to promote. Even if it's just that Rumours CD/DVD, but 2010 definitely does seem to be pushing their luck. They haven't forgotten the sting of the 2nd leg of the SYW tour.

This question is for anyone: How would a hypothetical farewell tour be different from this year's Unleashed tour? What would be different? The set list? The personnel? The size of the venture? The marketing? Any other aesthetic aspect? (The lighting? The arrangements?)

My questions are just about all rhetorical, in case that wasn't made clear. I don't think anything would be different from this year's tour. So, subsequently, who cares what they call it in 2010 or 2011 or 2012?

But farewell means something, as we saw when Cher said farewell for two years, before signing a contract with Caesar's.

Are you telling me that if Fleetwood Mac said, "See us now, because this is the last time you'll get to see us before we die or you die, that wouldn't sell a ticket to you?"

Well, what if they brought Carlos back? Would that change your mind? Then, it would be different personnel, on top of being your last chance to see them before you keel over. You callin' Ticketmaster yet?

All right, knock it off.

I'd go if John Kinney were to go. I have a little score to settle with him ... something about having been banned from his stupid chat room many years ago (all for referring to one of the great James Bond heroines, Pussy Galore).

WHERE DO I SAY FM'S NEXT TOUR NEEDS TO BE/ONLY HOPE IS THEIR FAREWELL TOUR? I clearly said that if Fleetwood Mac wants to tour in 2010 at the same venues for the same fee next year, it would take a few extreme developments to facilitate such an arrangement (and not just a new studio album).

You want to talk about bullying? How about blatantly and inexcusably misinterpreting what someone says for the purpose of belittling them? Jesus.

holidayroad 10-23-2009 07:50 AM

I think what would help Fleetwood Mac sell more albums and tickets is for them to interact more with their fans (at least in the U.S.). In the pics that have been posted on here recently from concerts outside the U.S., FMac seems to pose more willlingly for photos with fans, etc. They need to get out in the audience some at concerts. They need to show their fans that they are honored that they came to see them. For example, My husband is a fan of Rick Springfield and in the recent concert footage I've seen of Rick, he seems SO appreciative of his fans. He interacts with them, gets out in the audience, acts like it's the best time he's ever had! He's about the same age as Lindsey and Stevie. If he can do it, so can they. In no way am I trying to compare Rick and FMac musically. I'm just trying to say that in the music business today, it is a necessity to make your fans feel like they matter.

The "positive" people are often the most negative on the board --- toward other board members.

But let's have peace & a veritable cornucopia of opinion, I say.

They are supposedly meeting in January to discuss recording again. For ****s and giggles, let's say they decide to begin recording a new album during that meeting (which at this point, I am highly doubtful of). They'll take a good 6 months off after January to recover from their world tour, and spend that time searching for a recording venue and a producer. With all the egos involved, that will be no easy task getting everyone to agree on common ground for all this. So we're looking at an earliest possible start date for recording in June 2010. That means an earliest possible release date of around Christmas 2011. And I'm being very conservative... I think it will likely take longer because everyone will say they need a big break after the tour, then they'll fight and bitch about a recording venue, and ESPECIALLY a producer. Mark my words, that will be a big showdown, and could sink the project altogether. And this is all assuming they decide in January that they really want to move forward with a new album at all!

You took the words right out of my mouth......how better could it be said...totally agree....I picked NO....I personally don't see anything happing with them....period....heck what happend to the uptenth Rumours re-issue with DVD we were 'suppose' to get anyway....if that can't be worked out how is anything totally 'new' gonna be worked out......I just don't see it happening......it is whatever it is.....:sorry::distress:
