As I've said in the past, "Sara" is beautifully languid... it's like a stream of crystal-clear water, cascading over the rocks in a river bed. Slowly revealing the secrets it holds.

Meanwhile, "Save Me A Place" is molasses rolling up a hill in June. :p It reminds me of those dreams where you're trying to walk fast or run, but your legs feel extremely heavy and you're not making any progress.

I think it would help if we knew which song had immunity before we started voting. If you're link isn't working, then maybe the first person to answer correctly in the thread could choose immuntiy.

"Save Me A Place" is as esoteric as "When I See You Again", don't get me wrong. But it definitely isn't inaccessible. There may be a few people on this board rooting out for it (not me though) but when I read commentary from outside reviewers, stuff like "the most emotionally resonant piece on the album", it can be identified with by others, too.

"SMAP" is Lindsey's attempt to make music in the singer-songwriter formula, without the usual "excessive" arranging. It's a formula he rarely gets into. The song speaks of depression like "When I See You Again", but then again not the kind of depression that you seem to identify with. "Don't know why I have to work, don't know why I can't play". It's a very passive statement, it speaks of mornings when you just can't be bothered to get ouf of bed. And yet there's a glimmer of hope coming through it, like in "When I See You Again".

Of course, whatever you're stating in this thread isn't any less harsh than the "WISYA" 'critique' that you've seen yourself. So there goes your reputation as the UN of the board out of the window. Bring on the US. ;)

Not that I mind that much. "SMAP", "WISYA", in fact, everything this band and its solo artists have released, is just awfully boring.

It's not that I can't identify with it, or anything like that. I think we can all identify with the desire to play instead of working, and I think we can all identify with the need to have our "place" in the world.
The song just doesn't do anything for me.

It's not even a case like "Say Goodbye," where I LOVE the lyrics, but I'm not crazy about the album arrangement (I am, however, completely in love with the 'Live In Boston' performance). I'm unable to find anything to like about "Save Me A Place," even though I want to, and even though I've tried.

I think I can be allowed one song to have a deep dislike for. ;)
Even others that I've cited as "least favorites," are not songs I have a deep distaste for. They're just songs I like less than others.
But with "Save Me A Place".... well, let's just say I won't be joining its appreciation society any time soon. :)

What boggles my mind, is that "Save Me A Place" is so often put ahead of "That's All For Everyone"... which, in my opinion, is one of Lindsey's all-time best songs. Certainly one of his shining moments on 'Tusk.'

I gotta go with Johnny Stew on this one and vote for Save Me A Place. I love my Lindsey, but I have just never been able to like this song. The thing about it that bugs me the most is that drum drilling a hole in my head. It's so monotonous, I want to die.

That was never the issue here. Like what you like, dislike what you dislike, write the usual "that's cool, that's crap" posts and it doesn't bother me.
It's just that in this case your rhetorics are on the same level as Dissention's "WISYA" bashing. What raises tempers in you is bound to raise tempers in others as well. No matter how eloquently the Beaver County Librarian might type them down, they're still spurred by the emotional response to the piece, and quite possibly by the critique that has been thrown at one of the most esoteric moments of your preferred member in the band, a song that you have a deep emotional connection with. But whatever.
Earlier you stated that "there's absolutely nothing of any interest going on in the song". How come Bob Josef then states on this page http://starling.rinet.ru/music/fmacc.htm#Tusk that "he can suck you in anyway, with the title track, "Save Me A Place," "Walk a Thin Line," because the sound is so compelling."? Obviously the aural experiences of "Save Me A Place" from both of you differ like night and day.
In the Tango In The Night survivor thread you criticized "Ricky", even typed down it's lyrics to show how "anemic" it is and how there's not that much going on in that song either. Considering how you are a person who takes lyrical contributions to be very important to a song, it is not surprising to hear an opinion like this from you.
So, um, what makes "That's All For Everyone" so outstanding then? There's not much lyrical content there either, now is there? Of course, if you prefer to hear less than two minutes of a musical & lyrical loop than four minutes of one (="Ricky") then I do understand your statement.
"Save Me A Place", "That's All For Everyone" and "Ricky" are in essence relatively esoteric pieces with sparse lyrics. The message of these songs reaches beyond the superficial lyrical content. Whatever simplicity there seems to be, it is always shaded by something complex and carefully thought-out. The same I can say for the likes of "When I See You Again". The things the songs are trying to convey may be cryptic for some, but they can all be related to on a deep emotional level. Of course it might take a bulldozer, a battle-axe and the willpower of Mohammed to get to that point, but whatever.
