Let me explain my position. I didn't say this phenomenon started in the '60s. I said that it was part of that '60s mentality & it was. In fact, I remember the KLOS jocks remarking on this phenomenon during their live, on-scene coverage of the US Festival in 83 during Stevie's set. They were comparing & contrasting the clean, professional, "perfect" quality of Stevie's backup band -- guys hired specifically to make no mistakes -- with the bands at Woodstock (& elsewhere in the '60s & early '70s), who were more likely to jam around freely & be out of tune & just be generally rougher.

Mary Anne has undoubtedly heard or seen entire 82 shows. I saw the shows throughout the state that year & I loved em so much I'd have been thrilled with an uncut video record. I'd have been happier with the Irvine Meadows benefit (which I felt was more noticeably powerful & packed a bigger emotional wallop) on video, but the Forum shows were good enough in my book.

I was at The Dance concert in Atlanta and while waiting for the gates to open, someone had the audio of the live Mirage version of Gypsy playing. It sounded good when heard that way for some reason.

My beef about that recording is they were all way too wasted and they sang out of key more than once.

They also look unhappy and burnt out.

That being said, that version of SOTM flat out rocks even though it is way scary.

People bring a lot of their own emotional lives into their views of the band. To me, the band looks very happy, enjoying its status & the rough energy of its appeal.

Oh, but so was 80% of the audience at the two shows filmed, as well.


Depends on which night of the filming...one night was all "lovey dovey" between them, the other they were shooting daggered looks at each other throughout the performance...a smack-down could've broken out on stage at any moment. Kudos to the poor guys/girls who were given the job of editing the footage and sound.

SOTM and Rhiannon are both classic performances, in my book.

Rhiannon was the end of an era. I still cringe when she strains her voice on the high notes and am still in awe when she widens her eyes while singing in profile.

Also - isn't the gauzey back of that dress incredible!

you ain't never lied. Rhiannon was certainly the end of an era...and that dress is simply fabulous. I love how when she turns around to do the vamping that she folds it behind her and the tips sway like dove tails. oh, I could plotz.

I guess I love, too, the energy that comes out of actually being tired off your ass...that's what I get from the Mirage concert.

You know, that's why I LIKE the Mirage video. :shrug: It wasn't perfect, it wasn't too retouched, it wasn't overedited to make it look like an MTV video or movie. It's about as close as you can get to a real concert, IMO. Yeah, they're off-key a whole bunch. Yeah, I'm not really a fan of LB going down on the mike during NTF. But these are great, emotional performances.

I loathe the TITN DVD, but I'll agree with you that the WWD vid takes the cake. Fabulous, that one. :nod:

Really? I didn't know they were singles. They certainly weren't in the UK. I have no problem with bands playing songs that weren't singles but 1. why for the encore and 2. why put them on the tour video?

How can you loathe the TITN video? I love it. I love Christine's live version of Isn't it Midnight and Stevie's version of Stand Back but I hate the editing - it's all over the place. And does anyone know why Stevie's close-up's were done seperatly? They did it on the Red Rocks video too and it is really annoying. Mirage just makes me cringe. I loved the Mirage album but the video was disapointing. Stevie's vocals on Rhiannon are evil and every so ofter during Rhiannon, Sister of the Moon and Gypsy she glances over at the other band members to sort of say "help!" and Lindsey (being the arrogant bastard that he is) is just giggling to himself and hoping this would push Stevie aside for a bit (he never liked her being the biggest artist in the band). So anyway, what are peoples feelings about the Red Rocks DVD? I really don't like it that much - especially not Stevie slaughtering her own song (edge of seventeen). Loved I Can't Wait and Outside the Rain though. Does anyone have a clip of the I Can't Wait red rocks performance?

I think NTF and SOTM were put on the video because thet are kick ass performances. The 3 guys jamming on NTF is great to watch. As for SOTM, Stevie just takes command of the song, stage and band and lets it rip and I think most fans are happy to have them clear for the most part and recorded.

Not That Funny was definitely, definitely a single in the UK. I'm in the UK too btw. Anyway, that video wasn't produced just to be released in the UK but around the world. Why would they tailor it to what had been successful in one country?
Sisters Of The Moon may not have been released here as a single in the UK (although I'm not a 100 percent on that), but a, it's a kick ass performance and b, it's a kick ass performance. I prefer seeing those songs on the video than yet another performance of Dreams and Don't Stop personally. I also enjoy Lindsey's wonderfully hysterical Not That Funny. It's mad and full of life, which is how a rock and roll concert should be. (And the Mac are a rock band, not a pop band in my opinion).

It's so strange to me that you think Stevie slaughtered Edge Of 17 on the Red Rocks concert. So many people like that because she's lets loose and shows some passion. It's rock and roll! The reason I hate the Tango DVD is because it's so stilted and flashy. Stevie's voice sounds unnatural, monotone and she is very guarded with it, I guess because she was having problems on that tour. It was the beginning of the klonopin years afterall.
As for Stand Back, the Solid Gold and Saturday Night Live versions knock the socks off the Tango version IMO.

It's way too cheesy 80's overedited pop video to me. Oh, and no Lindsey! :( I don't watch Red Rocks either. Mainly because I litereally cannot get through either without rolling my eyes.

Cheesy, oh yes. I was trying to think of the right word and that's it. It's all shoulder pads and glitz, editing and flash over rock n' roll and passion.
I hate the Stevie close-ups too, in both the Tango and Red Rocks videos. I prefer Red Rocks though because it's nice to hear tracks like Talk To Me and No Spoken Word. The White Wing concert is definitely the best Stevie concert though, no doubt about that. :nod:
