That's language. Of course I know where "wall" refers to. But The brilliance of Spectors' "wall" was that it was layered and full, yet light and transparent. That's what I mean with "space": no "emptyness" but a threedimensional sound. The space in in the depth of the production. Like Lindsey does in SGCYM. That Thrown Down version is thick and flat. A wall it is, but not in terms of the great PS-"Wall Of Sound". To my ears, that reference is misused here.

:wavey:

Interesting, Gerald! "Thick and flat" is definitely how I'd describe that version, and I see what you mean about Spector's songs having more virtual space.

Since I'm to blame for the wall of sound moniker, I hereby commission you to give the demo a new name! Or you could even do a separate thread/poll?

TDTW-version (Throw Down The Wall)?
TAF-version (Thick And Flat)?
TMTTB-version (Take Me To The Bridge)?
WATG-version (Who Are Those Girls)?
LTA-version (Lindsey Testing Acoustics)?
ROT-version (Rule Of Thumb)?
WWDHDWTL-version (What Would Dylan Have Done With These Lyrics)?

HMM. Maybe just Wall Of Sound.....

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that "Thrown Down" (WOS Version) is not a Lindsey production? After all, didn't it surface on that German TISL advance CD? That indicates to me that the WOS version could well have been recorded for TISL -- with Lindsey on guest vocals. Whatcha think?

DownOnRodeo 03-15-2005 07:33 AM

Interesting..

If it turns out not have been produced by Lindsey I wouldn't be surprised. It is not his style at all and really freaked me out when I first heard it, thinking that his production sensibilities had done a 180 for the new album.

td

That could be. I remember Stevie saying the song had been produced at least twice but she was unhappy with the way it turned out so she pulled it off TISL for Fleetwood Mac. I also remember Sheryl saying in an interview that Lindsey was guesting on the album. The way she described it, made it sound like it was going to be more substantial than just his guitar in I Miss You. I have long thought it was likely that he guested on TD with her on vocals. Whatever happend, the album version is much much better, IMHO. I like the extra guitar on the WoS version but the added lyrics on SYW, make the song for me. Without those lyrics, the song lacks some of the emotional power she is trying to convey. It has always been one of my favorite songs on the album and Lindsey did a fantastic job producing it.
It would have made a super concept video too.

Yeah.....that idea is quite reasonable. What? It even sounds true. It would definately solve some mindbogglers for me....

Sharp observation, blinker!!

JOE!!

It is the TISL-version!!!!

I'm so relieved LB did not do that........ ;)

A TISL version with LB on vocals? Sure about that?

It may not be a Lindsey production, but it IS "Fleetwood Mac" and not a Stevie solo version.

Assuming he was a guest.

We are definately UNsure. Just speculating. And that FM-argument of ChiliD is convincing too. That rythmtrack HAS to be from our guys....

jbrownsjr 03-15-2005 02:46 PM

Once I got past the lead vocal, I realized this is a great song. I hear Christine on the parts LB covered.

The "wall of sound" version (sorry, Joe, I've always hated that nickname too :o ) originated on the 'Trouble In Shangri-La' acetate.

It was meant for 'TISL,' and features Stevie's backing vocalists. It was probably produced by Sheryl Crow (and co-produced by who knows who else), since Sheryl discussed a really terrific appearance by Lindsey that was going to be on the album and really please the fans. She could not have been talking about his tune-out and you'll miss it guest appearance on "I Miss You"!

Anyway, in my opinion, based on these facts, it's not a Mac version at all... outside of the fact that Lindsey is singing on it with Stevie.
I highly doubt John or Mick are on that version at all, given that it was recorded for 'TISL.'

So, in my eyes, it's the "TISL outtake version," and that's that. :)

chiliD 03-15-2005 04:20 PM

I disagree with ya, Johnny. There's a completely different version of TD that is somewhat similar to what we know as the wos version except you can definitely hear that it is not Mick & John as the rhythm section...and it sounds more "fitting" to the sound of TISL. The WOS version is definitely Fleetwood Mac.

I'd have to agree with JS - the prominence of Stevie's backup singers sells it for me as a TISL outtake. I always wondered why they were so present on what I thought was an FM track... now it all makes sense.

Joe - you came up with the name "Wall of Sound"? Don't you love having affected online fan culture to such a degree that your nickname has become the definitive one - at least for now? :)
