Interesting. I've always thought it was addressed to the public, the faces in the crowd. She was no longer the golden girl of rock, she was in her Klonopin haze, etc.

From the very first time I ever heard the song, I've always very plainly heard "in and out of agony" the second time.

As great as the Nicksfix is, they do get a lyric wrong sometimes. :)

By the way, deribish, it does almost sound as if Stevie is singing, "I have forgotten you and your beautiful lies."
I actually like the line better that way. :)

She confuses me with pronunciation all the time! For years I have heard Gypsy as:

She was just a witch, she was just a witch!

I thought that, too, years ago.

Me too!!!!!

I think she knows she is doing that and does it with a wink and a nod - sort of like when she said "I knew people would think 'Bombay Sapphires' was about the gin"

And how many times have we heard people -including interviewers who act like they are Stevies biggest fan, refer to Edge of 17 as "just like the ONE winged dove" ?

huh?

You mean she's NOT saying "She was just a witch, she was just a witch?"

Up until 10 seconds ago that's what I thought she was saying too. The version I have that Christine sings also sounds like she's saying "She was just a witch."

Time to do some googling.

But yeah, Paper Doll. Good song! It was almost enough to make me want to buy Behind The Mask until I found out it wasn't even on the album. It's kind of corny, but that doesn't mean it's bad. A lot of corny songs are pretty good (Led Zep's "Hot Dog" and Yes's "Arriving UFO" come to mind).

Nevermind, I forgot the Mirage booklet had the lyrics in it. Just a WISH. I see.

Don't feel bad! I made the same mistake until maybe a few months ago and i was blown away, because my favorite part in Gypsy was the "she was just a witch" part. maybe she has changed it through the years? i don't know!

And Paper Doll is a little, what is the word, cheesy, but i love all that late 80's early 90's style.

I really like his song too. The way it is done is so funky. The accordian and the drums are knid of neat. The lyrics are really good too. Overall one of the better late 80's - early 90's offerings from the mac.

loved it when it first came out -

think it's pretty lackluster now...
