I didn't like SB at first, it took me a while to like it. In fact, besides Gypsy, I was king of dissapointed with her 2 other songs. I felt they didn't have the power, or quality, of GDW or Landslide for example. At the end I like all her Mirage songs, and are far superior than WISYA or The Second Time. But I still felt she could have done better to accompany Gypsy.

I always thought she gave us a great variety. Many die hard Stevie fans don't like SB. Not sure why.

Here's a rehearsal live version.

Sounds like she and Christine are trying to make this presentable.

Straight Back is amazing. I just dont get how anyone could not like this song. Its very Stevie in writing style. It does share something with Gypsy. It does not have a traditional pop song chorus. Its too deep for that. She also explodes vocally like Gypsy. Straight Back is one of my favorite Nicks Mac songs. The lyrics are so cool, Chris is backing which is rare and the keyboard and guitar playing around each other. Its Ray Lindsey on acoustic guitar too.
People hate Sugar Daddy and Straight Back? Where is my block button!

Fingers find the ivory keys and a song
begins to begin
like a wolf on the run

And you will find something in wind that you lost
The dream was never over, no
The dream was only lost

She remembers how good it can be
He remembers a melody
In the shadow of my shadow.......in a gleam

Come on now, it does not get any better than that

Ah, okay. I will dutifully turn in a revised homework assignment :)

From 1975-1988, my least favorite songs from each album:

Monday Morning
Never Going Back Again (though I still love it)
I know I'm Not Wrong
Oh, Diane
Welcome to the Room, Sara

Well, none of her songs are the worst on any album—except Skies the Limit, which repulses me.

Interesting list!

Blue Letter — I almost listed that.
Sisters of the Moon — never liked the album version, which sounds unfulfilled in a way the 79 and 82 concert versions don’t.

Live in Store? What?! Really? I totes dig that ditty.

I wanted to list “What Makes You Think You’re the One” for the same reason, but I have to remember how surprised I was to hear something so garagey.

The verses are cringe, but it’s got a great chorus. I never loved how the band played it. Seems really tired with a gallumphing tempo. Imagine it with a tempo like “Believe Me.”

Crystal (lovely song, but sounds ridiculous with Lindsey singing it)
Don’t Stop (it’s just hokey, particularly the production)
What Makes You Think You’re the One (that intro is just obnoxious, especially following the dreamy Sara)
Oh Diane (just no…)
Family Man (okay, the production on this one is still awful)

Interesting how every song I chose had Lindsey as a singer. While I arguably respect Lindsey the most musically, his constant boundary pushing and experimentation didn’t always result in timeless or even good music.

I disagree with some of your selections, but your commentary was funny and pretty hard to argue with LOL! Just no, indeed to Oh Diane! What Makes You Think You’re the One is a favorite of mine, but your comment about how obnoxious it sounds after the sublime Sara is a really good point. If I recall correctly, and I’m going by memory here, on the Tusk 2 vinyl set my family had, Sara was the last song on one side, so we had to get up, take the album off the record player, and flip it over, all of which gave us a few moments to kind of pause between the two songs. With the album on CD, no flipping required LOL so I can see how the lack of transition between Sara and WMYTYTO can be jarring, obnoxious even. Cool point.

I do have to say, though, that Crystal is one of my all time favorite songs, due in large part to Lindsey’s beautiful vocal. It’s such a Stevie song, and most people would expect to hear her voice on it, so hearing the guy who sang GYOW, the Chain, I’m So Afraid, etc singing about mountains and crystal like fountains makes for a fascinating juxtaposition. Love the accapella intro.

Sugar Daddy
Oh Daddy- hmmm, maybe I have daddy issues?
The Ledge/Walk a Thin Line/Not That Funny- all three are one big pile of crap.
Oh Diane- literally sounds like Lindsey modulated his voice to sound like Christine.
Family Man- probably my least favorite FM song ever; however, since I doubt anyone else in FM played on it, maybe it shouldn’t count as a FM song? Probably the same thing with those three songs from Tusk, too.

I feel that far more in Don't Stop.

I agree with all of your sentiments. Plus did you know there are 2 different versions FM recorded? I bought the album on day one of its release and a friend who became a fan later on bought Mirage on cassette and it had a better remix that I never would have known existed if I didn't become friends with her.

Yep. The guitar solo licks at the end WEREN'T on the cassette that was originally released. I eventually got the CD, and was all "WTF IS THIS!"
