Agreed, FM is the worst run organization I have ever seen. Remember Unleashed they were going to release the Rumours remastered blah blah blah and it never came out.

i think Christine and Lindsey were very much equal footing collaborators, complementing each other in their differing strengths and weaknesses, as they both said and acknowledged many times.

I think there's a lot of truth in what you say, but really the band does not tell us the whole truth about anything--- they are smart enough when they talk to the media to not give away too much of the real dirty laundry. They have a certain narrative and they pretty much stick to it. There is sooo much crap we'll never know about because we only ever get the most fleeting glimpses behind the curtain. And when they are onstage, they are indeed giving a *performance*.. they are selling a particular vision of Fleetwood Mac, not the unvarnished reality. They know the vision of the band we all want to believe and they most definitely cater to that. So who really knows....

yes, agree very much with all of that. and really they don't owe anybody their behind the scenes dirty (or clean!) laundry, however much people may seem to want to take a peek.

There's been no reason for Christine to hand her music over to Lindsey. As a musician, she can flesh out what she wants much more clearly than Stevie can and there's no need for him to take over on her songs. Even when she was mad at Lindsey after he left Tango, she never complained about his handling of her music, although she had other negative things to say.

I think the way she talked about the Tango songs, with her having the music and him supplying the words on one track and him having the music and her supplying the words on another, was very illustrative of the back and forth and parity in their collaborations.

And when she left the band, they weren't even working on new music anyway.

I've always thought the limo conversation in which Stevie is complaining because Christine wanted Lindsey to sing with her on Hold Me was revealing of what Christine thought of the value of his vocal contributions on songs like Don't Stop and Think About Me meant.

I wonder whether Christine and Lindsey did just have some harsh words at The Grammys? I certainly don't see her being annoyed with him at the way he produced her songs, as around the time of ITM she was generous about him and the way he did so.

When Lindsey was, repeatedly, saying in 2009 that she 'burned her bridges' after The Dance (complete with an intriguing and ambiguous smirk) I got the feeling that the two of them may have fallen out at the time, and that time had cooled whatever the argument was.

I'm not saying this was the only reason: we all know she didn't want to tour any longer and that she hated flying; we know that she was homesick and hated the earthquakes when she lived in California; we know that her marriage was breaking down.

But maybe a post-Grammy's argument was the straw that broke the camel's back? It would sort of thread together all the different stories you hear about *when* Christine said she was leaving. She said she told them all it would be her last tour before they set out; Stevie, I seem to remember, said at one stage that it was about 20 dates into the tour; Mick said something similar; other versions have said it was after the last night of the tour, others that it happened after the Brit Awards. Maybe it was a slow drip-drip of all of these, leading to a flashpoint after the Grammys?

Wait: what happened at the grammys?

I don't understand this. So Lindsey got upset about losing at the Grammys.....what does this have to do with Christine? Why would it be such a sticking point for her? Is Lindsey not supposed to or allowed to get upset about things?

My favorite thing about TANGO is how well Lindsey and Christine worked together on that record, so this is fascinating to me. Can you provide links to interviews or articles where she talked about writing those two songs?

I've never heard of this "limo conversation." Was it from a documentary? Regardless, I wish Stevie hadn't made such comments. They make her sound petty.

It's no secret that I'm more of a Lindsey fan, but I absolutely believe that the individual contributions from the different members are what make a band's magic work.

With SAY YOU WILL, I have to say that I enjoy "Thrown Down" and the title track as much as I like any of Lindsey's songs from that record. What was Stevie's issue with Lindsey's production on "Thrown Down?" I love that song, and I love Lindsey's production of it. Has Stevie's demo been released, so that we can compare the song before and after?

Ooops. I just realized I'm pushing us further away from the original subject. Sorry about that.

For the record, if having Christine play/sing on the EP would push its release back even more, then I respectfully hope that she's not involved. The band is getting some tour-based press coverage, and they need to get the new songs out there to capitalize on the news stories/reviews.

BUT...! If things go well and Christine ends up playing on new recordings, I'd have no problem with her being added to "Sad Angel" and the other EP songs if some of them are included in an eventual FM album.

Regards,
matt

I think, as people are saying in another thread, he may have had a hissy fit about not winning and with all her worries and troubles that pushed her over the edge. She maybe told him to shut up and put things in perspective. I would have.

In fact, I do think there was a weirdness between them post-Dance. In 2003 I remember reading that Mick, Stevie, John and the boys' spouses had gone to Christine's for dinner. I don't think Lindsey went. Read into that what you will, if it's true.

We're totally speculating of course. It's all water under the bridge now.

It was captured from the Destiny Rules documentary. He lectures her on her lyrics and basically said there are rules to songwriting, I think with regard to her tense or choice of verb. Stevie told him off: did anyone tell Bob Dylan how to write his songs? It was a small moment, but a telling one of why Stevie has tried to avoid recording with Lindsey for Fleetwood Mac. I bet, looking back, she wishes she spoke up more during the Say You Will production, as she wasn't thrilled with the outcome (or probably that it was essentially a double album and way too long). Here, I'd side with Stevie: You don't tell her how to write a song. She is the most significant songwriter in the group and she has a natural ability to write that has driven Lindsey crazy over the years.

i really don't know why i keep checking back in this thread... when we all know CM will not be on the EP.

maybe that's why this thread has turned into "let's make up some reasons to bash Lindsey" thread.

I read that the whole band went over to Christine's for dinner when they toured there in 2003. No names were specified in any interviews I saw as to who exactly went and who didn't. Mick just spoke in plural, the same way he did when he caught up with Christine a few years later during his solo tour.

That's about all she said that she had the music for one and he had the music for the other. She didn't specify which song was which.

It wasn't a documentary. It was informal audio tapes that Mick made of the band when they were riding in a limosine. They have circulated among the fans. Stevie was probably high at the time. You've seen the Warner Bros. clips where they are supposed to say Happy Birthday and she was clowning around, right? Well, that's all she was doing in this limo tape. She was saying why was Lindsey singing on Christine's song and she told Christine it was over between them, but she was just talking nonsense, saying all kinds of things like Mick has ugly shoes and who knows what.

My point was that it showed me that Christine made songs that did not necessarily start off as duets into them and I think she must have liked the effect. Obviously, when you have men and women in a band, you want to have male/female love songs, so that's natural. But she has said that she and Lindsey get such an interesting sound together and I think she has noticed what fans have, when they sing together: sometimes you can't tell the two apart. Plus, their different styles make the song more complex, which is what I think happens on Hold Me and Think About Me, in particular.

Well, Hold Me is entirely different, because Lindsey's hand in the production of that song is very strong, aside from his vocal.

I know, it would be illogical, if Stevie had said that's what happened, but Stevie's truncated comments can't even lead to the reasonable conclusion that she actually said that is what happened.

To Matt Lucas,

I think this is on Youtube, you can find it. Look under limo conversations. But this is what we can hear them saying.

Christine: Anyway, you gotta listen to this it's uh...
Stevie: Of Lindsey singing Hold Me?
Christine:Lindsey singing Hold Me...
Stevie:I'll never forgive you if you let Lindsey sing one of your songs and not me.
Christine: No, no. The thing is he's gonna sing it, and I'm gonna sing it longer.
Stevie: That's it! It's over!
Christine: No, no, no, Stevie.
Stevie: You heard it [she starts singing) It's over. It's over. It's over. It's over like it never was before.
Christine: No, Stevie. I've got a song for you. You've got a song for me. Lindsey"s got a song for me. Lindsey's got a song for you. You have a song for Lindsey.
Stevie:They got a song for us.
Man: This has totally destroyed my decision.
Stevie: Does anybody got any pot?

bethelblues 04-22-2013 05:04 PM

I just listened to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtAapDMZstc
It was hilarious. They sound like little kids, Stevie whining her ass off. I didn't catch your transcript above. Maybe that's from a different one?

Boy is Stevie out of it: "I love graveyards and we sure are running into a lot of them. Lindsey loves graveyards." Stevie when Christine said someone left her room at 5:00 a.m.: "Why wasn't I there? You should call me up. I was bored stiff. I was laying in my bed watching television."

Mick is basically frustrated with Stevie the entire time: "Yes you did! That means you definitely are out to lunch. Oh for goodness sake...Let me finish! ...It's impossible, she won't stop." And a great one: "No, I will not turn the tape off!"

Christine: "I'm halfway to being drunk."

Ok I really need to find this conversation. The only one I find is the one where they are talking about graveyards. I will keep looking.

The last part of this dialogue makes me giggle.. oh goodness, Stevie.

This is from the interview Christine did with Laura Goss in 1987

Quote:

They were sort of weird collaborations. They weren’t sitting down in a room writing songs together. In the case of 'Mystified', that was a piano instrumental that I had, and Lindsey took it home and put some words to it and some drum patterns that we all really liked. 'You and I' was reversed. Lindsey had a completed beautiful guitar track with no vocals on it so I sort of helped with him on the melody on that.
It's an audio interview. I had a cd with an interview with Chris and Lindsey on one side and interviews with Stevie and John from 1988 on the other.

When Chris was promoting the album, she did have to bring up A Fine Mess again and again, as it is what got them all back together and thinking of a return to the studio after 5 years. She mentions that the studio gave her free reign to hire anyone she wanted to produce her song single and she hired Lindsey (and Richard).
