Concerning the 'shattering glass' in GDW. If you are listening for the sound of breaking glass, you won't hear that. It's just a quick second of sound that almost sounds like someone stepping on and crunching glass underfoot.

I shall have to go back and listen yet again.

Seems like a LOT of time and money spent for no real appreciable gain. No wonder everyone says record companies wouldn't stand for that kind of excess these days.

I am clearly able to hear the glass breaking starting just after 4:00 in the version of GDW on the 2009 Greatest Hits (Very Best of Fleetwood Mac). However, I can't hear it in the version on Rumours (Deluxe Edition), so they must have remixed or something for the Greatest Hits release. The Greatest Hits version is also 4 seconds longer.

*edit* I take that back, I can hear it on Rumours, but I had to turn the volume up and listen very carefully. It was much more pronounced on the Very Best of Fleetwood Mac.

I think one of the best bits quirks on Rumours is when Lindsey drops the f-bomb at the start of You Make Lovin Fun! At least I think it's that one, I could be wrong. I haven't listened to it that closely in ages. I love the story behind it too, that just before starting to record someone dropped a lead on the floor and it made a noise.. what else would you say to that?!

YMLF was the only song on the album recorded in digital format, which was relatively new to the recording industry at that point. The rest of the album was recorded in analog. That would explain why it sounded better than all the other songs.

Yeah, that and the changing of Lindsey's guitar strings every 20 minutes during the all-day recording of NGBA. They burned up A LOT of studio time!

I mean.. really? And then when they got the right key.. why stop with the string changing..?

It is TRULY amazing, at least on a cost effective basis, though. So I put together a home recording studio, over the past few months.
I bought an Alesis HD24 hard disk recorder. New(they no longer make them), they were $1500. I bought mine on eBay for $510! You buy new computer hard drives(just like on a PC) for them, and they're easy to install. Mine came with an 80 gig hard drive. I recorded 4 - 3 hour shows of my band, in 16 track format, and it still has a little space left.
So I bought a 320 gig hard drive for it, for $106, including shipping. I formatted the drive, and selected 24 track recording. Want to know the capacity, of recording 24 tracks? TWENTY FIVE HOURS! It can record 25 hours of 24 track recording. AM I the only one ASTOUNDED by this? I have $616.00 in this thing, and can record 25 hours of 24 track digital recording. It's truly mind boggling. Can you imagine if you'd told someone in the 1960's or 70's, that this would be possible?
The cost effectiveness of digital is obvious. I've spent this whole winter, learning the art of recording.
