I know, I know, it's not a phrase, but, how about...
Whatevs. Hmm, let me guess. Do you mean whatever?!? It only saves you ONE syllable, and is the difference between NORMAL and soundling like the 12-year-old AOL poster child. There are a bunch more where people drop a few letters and just sound absolutely ridiculous, but this is the only one that came to mind... Not to mention everyone who speaks in Online Speak. Example: Person #1: "Why did the chicken cross the road??" Person #2: ::Blank Stare:: Person #1: "To get to the other side." Person #2: "LOL." Ugh. Brad :) |

"Cool and Groovy"
My manager says that all the time. I probably wouldn't hate it so much if I didn't hate her so much, but... ya know. As for sayings other people have listed: I've been known to say - "But what do I know?" "Get 'r' done." "That sucks ass." "That's what I'm talking about" |
The new annoying one : "You know what I'm sayin' ?"
I always want to respond - "I would, if you used articulate phrases and just spit it the hell out " |

I don't know when and where that trend started, but it needs to stop. |
It isn't really a phrase or a word that I hate, but I hate when people are extremely stupid online, and can't type for ****. Seriously, I want to slap them.
Example: (She was talking about a membership that needed a credit card) Jen: o and of coure they want a credit card Me: Of course Me: I have that :) Jen: i was planning on using my very first chedck Jen: what Me: A credit card. Me: Do you listen to what you say? Jen: well im getting a vist check card Jen: no Jen: i READ what u say Jen: hahahhaha Me: You put the emphasis on the wrong syllable Jen: what Jen: english please Me: It should be "I read what YOU say." Please tell me you're kidding and you know what a syllable is. Jen: the thing were u clap to see how many u get for a word Jen: like blue is one Jen: clpa Jen: and yellow is ..hold on Jen: 2 Another: Jen: OMG DID U HEAR ABOUT THE GUT WHO HAD SEX WITH A DOG???????????????????????????????????????????? Me: Excuse me? Jen: u didnt Jen: hold on Me: The gut?? Jen: guy Jen: dofus Me: Wow. Me: Why are you calling me a doofus? Sorry, I don't speak retard. :D Jen: a 37 man was working for a resifent on 7th street was arrested jun9th after he alledgedly had sexual contact with a dog. Police arrested Noel Huecian after he was seen approacing an skita dog in a fenced backyard. He reportidlly exposed himslf to the dog and allowed sexual contact with the dog. at 1230 the same day, huecias was observed jupping the fence again and allowed sexual contact with the doh agian. STC po observed and took into custody, uecais was charge ith 1 count sexual contracy wiht animal, a class 4 felony and with crimnal tresspass to land. the dog was unharmed I never understand anything she's saying online, becuase she spells everything wrong. Does this annoy anyone else?? |
"No you didn't"
"Sir, do you know how fast you were going?" "We find the defendant guilty." "Do you want to pick up your last paycheck or have us send it to you in the mail?" (Gee, if I didn't need the money, I could give them a great thrid option...) |
The one that always bothered me. Anytime someone tries to ryhme any Long "a" word such as Rain, Plane, ..etc with the word AGAIN. Short "E". It's not AGANE. And any form of Ubonics. "TH" is not the letter D of F. it is ASK not AXE. And Don't get me started on "shahizzle" or Izzle Anything!
|

BTW, some Canadians actually do say AGANE. |

Well I think these types of phrases are fun so I don't really hate any of them. Hi Amber. :wavey:
I did encounter this woman, a friend of a friend, who ends all of her spoken paragraphs with "Do you know what I mean?". Not even "you know" or "right" but the whole sentence. After listening to her for about 5 minutes you're done and it's almost impossible to keep paying attention. |
Yes, I hate this too. I won't even try to figure it out if I don't understand. Write in English or don't write.

Even worse though is his use of the phrase "Oh my god, that's so hetero!" (usually preceded by a very loud belch). |

I also can't stand: "I'm fixing to...." (Southern thing) Online, I hate to see "huzzah!"- that drives me insane! And "kudos to you..." Gah. |
When men say "The Wife"
Women "My old Man" My boss does not know the correct use of come/came. He will say things like "The wife come over yesterday, we worked in the yard and got 'r' done." |

one manager always says "I knew that"
well if ya knew it, why didya ask me???? this guy has the worst case of SMS I have ever seen--cannot stand a woman to be right--especially one who is taller than he is!! |
Quote:
I HATE when people use the word Kudos  I don't know why - it just bugs the crap outta me   |
The one I cannot stand is "blah, blah, blah." My sister-in-law, who I love dearly and is one of my best friends, says it ALL the time. Every single time she tells me a story about something she uses "blah, blah, blah," at some point. And as soon as she says it, it totally distracts me from the story because I hate it so much!

"Twenty-four/seven."
I HATE IT!!! |
Lets get crunk and YEAH

"Guesstimate" GOD, it's like nails on the chalkboard! I HATE that "word" so much I can't even explain. And, I agree with so many that people have already mentioned. Could/would/should "of" -- read you're freakin' 6th grade English grammar books, please! And when people say "ideal" when "idea" is the correct word and they think by adding the "l" it sounds sophisticated. No, it makes you sound like a dumbass because you have no clue what the hell you're talking about.
I'm sure as the late night drags on I will think of some more that grate on me! Oh, here's some more. When people don't know the difference between your and you're...similar to its and it's. And good vs. well...Oh, and two/to/too. Is it really THAT hard to sort those out? I think it's laziness more than anything. Just take a second and think about what you're about to say/write, and you will save yourself from looking like a total ass. Sorry to sound like a complete asshole. I just take a lot of time/pride when I write, and it kills me to no end when people destroy the English language. Brad |
Just thought of another one which I see so much it's ridiculous. "Loose" Like, "I hope I don't 'loose' all my money in Vegas." It's "lose." I've seen so many "educated" people do that, and I hate it. It might be one of the most common spelling errors I've run across.

I use that one as well. ooohhh.... I just thought of something that IRRITATES ME TO NO END: When people have a rash, bug bite, etc. and talk about "itching" it. Look people, get a friggin' dictionary already. You don't ITCH an itch. You SCRATCH it. |

Not to sound like a b***h (or my mom, who always corrected my English), but your post gave me a good laugh, because you mentioned people who don't know the difference between your and you're. Reread your first paragraph. :wavey: Should be "read YOUR freakin' 6th grade..." I'm sorry. I just had to point that out!! Too funny! :woohoo: Carol |
"definately" or "definatly" ..
"than" when it should be "then" and vice versa. I don't understand, English is not my first language but even I know those things  But correct spelling is a pet peeve in Dutch too. |
I'd like to give a shout out to.....
I have to give him props... That's hot (I used to love it until that Hilton broad stole it from me. So I don't use it anymore. For spite.) My bad After you're all orientated to the program...(shouldn't this be oriented? We don't say disorientated, do we?) |

"Culture of life"
"Yada yada yada" Using "of" instead of "have" |
Quote:
And I'm with Krista on "culture of life." Hate that. I also hate it when people use "anxious" to mean "eager," though it's technically correct. It used to be incorrect, but since it was so common I guess the dictionary changed the definition of "anxious," which used to mean tense and not eager. I used to just want to scream whenever someone would say "I'm really anxious to get started" or something like that. I've had to get over it to a degree because it is so common. I actually wrote a paper for a grammar class claiming that "anxious" should not be used to mean "eager" and found many dictionaries that backed up my claim but unfortunately they were all a little dated. My professor told me I had done my research but it was still wrong. One of my pet-peeves is what I perceive as misspelling of the word "y'all." Why would someone say "ya'll" when the word (granted it's not a real word, but still) is a contraction of "you" and "all"? The only logical spelling in that case is "y'all." I don't know--perhaps the other spelling refers to "ya" and "all." I can't stand it when I see signs in the front of establishments that say "CONGRADULATIONS GRADUATES!" I learned how to spell that word when I was a little kid and grown adults can't spell it correctly? :distress: Ahhhhhhhh. I'm nearly finished with my school work so I'm taking a break. (Well, I mean, this phase of it, anyway). It's so good to go back to being Ledge-obsessed. And this book I'm reading about the Salem witch trials is just awful so I'm loving this board right now. |
