That goes for Tusk, Lindsey's solo stuff... all of it. He seems to overthink what should be natural and enjoyable at a certain point. It's like someone once said (forget who, sorry), "Stevie needed to smile more when she was singing the parts for SYW".

I don't think so. :) I redid Tango & burned a new CD. I took out the 3 Stevie songs & added "You And I, Part I", "Down Endless Street" & "Ricky". I just don't like her songs on the album although I love her & Lindsey's backing vocals on "Little Lies". A glossy pop album of 12 Buckingham/McVie songs sounds pretty darn good to me. :D I'm certainly glad they didn't do anything with "Special Kind Of Love". I think "What's Rock & Roll Ever Done For You" is awful. I think that song may be even worse than "When I See You Again" & "Welcome To The Room Sara...", if that's possible. ;)

I think you people will have to go on dreaming. There will never ever be a Buckingham McVie album, the closest you'll ever come to it is Tango (funnily enough my least favourite Rumours-era Mac album).

Dreaming is free...

I just think Stevie brings that album down a LOT. Everything is great until one of her doozies comes on and then I just can't get to the skip button fast enough. I can't even stand Seven Wonders, I think it's awful. Crap voice, crap lyrics.

It's much stronger without her, in my opinion. I burned a copy without her and it's as smooth as butter.

That's exactly why it needed for thought and effort. Nothing gels together, everything is just haphazardly thrown onto there. It's as if they had a bunch of songs, recorded them, and put them on an album. They had no regard for how it runs, no regard for theme, no ability to distinguish the good from the bad, and we just ended up with a behemoth of an album. If they had actually put some thought into it, it might have been one of their best records.

agreed, except for Tusk. That's perfection in directness AND production.
And I can imagine that could have been for GOS, too.

So I repeat, an almost live cut raw rock-album is what FM should have done. And it's not too late.

TITN? A perfect example of how everything went wrong in terms of musical vision.

My view is: If they really had gone for the double-album with five more tracks, and therefore a totally different running order, it might have been one of their best records.

Even as an overproduced mastadont.

They did...in 1975. They recorded the "white album" in, what was it, 6 weeks or something?

Yeah, you're right, but that was a POP-album. Like I said before, only Then Play On comes close......

TITN without her sounds so eighties that makes me run away and scream. Stevie provides the unpredictabe element on that album. You can love or hate those songs but their disequilibrium is positive for me. :)

You push the rhetorical license to the limit, diss. I never know for certain where you stand. The "Seven Wonders" track is one of the best things Fleetwood Mac has ever done, from an engineering standpoint. How many other bands & their employees can get a mix like that out of themselves? every instrument is precisely where it needs to be, every vocal track (lead or backup) sounds as if it were either singing right in front of you or whispering in your ear. Nothing oversteps its sonic bounds, nothing saturates anything else. Same thing with not only "When I See You Again" but the rest of the album. It's immensely satisfying as a technical masterstroke, & hey that's enough for me ... yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ...

I don't care whether the lyrics are stupid or the melody is dull (except for "Welcome to the Room") or the vocal itself is disspirited or zonked as long as the track glistens like opals & emeralds. That's what's so good about Fleetwood Mac -- that & the fact that they all play their instruments in weird ways. I don't think the songs themselves are anything more than more-or-less good pop songs. Nothing throughout the whole catalog (except maybe "Before the Beginning") is as great a bare song as "Yesterdays" or "Easy Living" or "Lush Life" or even "Eleanor Rigby." But it's the tracks that are special, folks. It's all about the tracks.

Your mileage may vary & so on & so forth ....

I still think Stevie's voice is incredible on Seven Wonders. Love it, love it, love it :)
Her vocal is a mad ride in a funhouse with day-glo paints everywhere. It's eye-popping. It's psychedelic amazing. I don't understand how people say they can love the '86 tour & not love that "Seven Wonders" vocal -- they're blood sibs.

That's exactly how I felt when I first heard tango. I couldn't believe the other songs. I was like "ugg!" Of course, the cheesy 80's sound has grown on me now, but it took awhile...

Big Love, Seven Wonders and Everywhere still kick ass though. Thems some top tunes, if I do say so myself :)

I guess. I heard SW when it came out, and loved it....actually, come to think of it, the next time I heard Tango was only, like...1993, and I still couldn't believe the cheesiness of Big Love. And my kick ass songs from Tango are (besides SW) Isn't It Midnight and Caroline. The thing is, though, Stevie's songs sound the least cheesy 80's. Even having been released in the 80's.

I don't know anything about the technical aspects of any of it, nor do I really pay attention to any of it, so you may very well be right. The music is quite good, but the lyrics are bad and her voice is annoying on it. More power to you if you like it, but I can't stand her Tango material (though Seven Wonders is a masterpiece in comparison to the other two tracks of hers).

Not my favourite album (even if I prefer it to TOSOTM), but anyway, IMO Stevie's voice takes away most of the cheesiness. There's always an untamable component in it. :D

You mean like:
The Queen Is Dead
The Head on The Door
Purple Rain
Let's Dance
Sister
Fisherman's Blues
Avalon Sunset

Just to tell some.. And they still sound pretty actual to me. It's not a quality that I find predominant on TITN.

There's always "Mad Love" with Peter Lorre!

Alexbt 03-30-2005 01:28 AM

To go back on topic, sorta...

...locked Chris in a cage so she couldn't leave. ;)
...hired me to play keyboards and sing Chris's backups (failing the cage option).
(In all seriousness, I can play her better than the other two keyboardists they brought.)

As for Tango in general... it IS an 80's album.
That's what people were doing back then!

Oh, and I am avaliable for hire anytime they need me. :)

WelshWitchPMD 03-30-2005 01:42 AM

Have front row tickets and meet and greet passes for all Ledgies!

Never, ever let Lindsey wear that white T-shirt again!

Ditto for Stevie's black granny sweater and dress.

let the ledgie fans fly with them that pay for more than 1 concert :)
have sing alongs on the plane with ledgies

By that same logic, Billy and Rick were in the second most successful incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, having sold more albums internationally and having played in front of more people than any other non-Rumours Mac. Sure, THEY weren't the stars of the show, but neither were Danny or Jeremy.

Really, the only Stevie song I don't like from "Tango" is WISYA. If I could redo the album, I'd replace that song with "Book Of Miracles" and I'd replace "Family Man" with "Down Endless Street."
