Personally, I would like to see Stevie and Lindsey do solo tours. Then, Fleetwood Mac should get their butts back into the studio and do another album, and then tour to promote that album. They need to make this new album sooner than later. It shouldn't be like Say You Will, which came out SIX YEARS after The Dance! They are getting up in years, unfortunately, and they need to start putting this valuable time to use. If they wait another six years like they did with the Say You Will project, we may never see another album. :distress:

I agree with Kelly.

I would love another tour--in any and/or all combinations of Stevie and Lindsey.

I don't consider them a strictly nostalgia band. However, many people do--and they expect to hear the old songs. That's just a fact of life. These songs mean something to people. They were songs played at the prom, or ones they made out to, or just stuff that helped them make sense of their lives. On the last Atlantic City show--there were these women in front of us and one of them, from the start of the concert, was going into spasms, screaming for Rhiannon. I just wanted to tap her on the shoulder and say, "Relax, dear. A concert without Rhiannon? Never. She's on her way." I didn't do that and it was almost worth it because the woman nearly fell to the ground when the opening notes sounded. She was just floored that she was hearing Rhiannon live.

It's a kick. And for many in the audience, it is a big nostalgia trip. And I like being around for that ride, but I personally love the new stuff even more. And they have been giving us a little bit of both.

What they can't give us is youth. Ours or theirs. And I'm afraid the day will come when concert promoters or whoever will not book them because they are "too old," and not enough of a draw for the younger audiences who spend more at these things (allegedly. My VISA card would prove them wrong).

As long as they can ride out this wave, I'm right there with them.

They put on great performances. They make me extremely happy and I just feel fortunate to have the experience that just a decade ago, seemed like a completely impossible dream.

I do not begrudge them one bit as I would do the same. AND - apparently they priced themselves correctly because the market sustained the price for the most part in that the tour sold well - not sold out mind you - but well enough.

How about just dropping the freaking back up musicians. It's all I'd ask

I think one piano player...and additional percussionist and guitarist....one backup singer is all they need.....and lower the mic volume on them...geez a whiz....sounds like a Sharon and Jana show than anything.

I agree - I think it should be Mick, John, Stevie, LB and no others (no Sharon, no Brett, no Neale, no Carlos - as much as I like them and admire their great talents). I think it was great for awhile, but it is too much now. Let's se them jam with just themselves. They can do it

Kelly 02-09-2005 08:26 AM

expenses

The jet, hotel rooms, massages, various personal expenses get paid for by the band after the tour is over. Yes, I am sure they try and figure out what they will spend but their nightly take was negotiated before they went on the road and their expenses are paid for the members when the tour is completed. If they want to pay for extra expenses, like the jet, that is their choice...they earned the money. It's not like the accountants and lawyers sat down and said, ok, Stevie wants a jet, a masseuse, a luxurious suite so we have to jack the ticket prices up. She pays for her expenses. They would still earn the same set price per show even if they took a bus and stayed in the Econo Lodge because that is what the investors feel the band is worth to them.

As far as ticket prices...who really believes the band sits down and decides the prices? Of course they are involved to some extent but the people that front the money for this tour must have alot of say in how much is charged per seat. That is how they recoup what they invested and earn money. The band makes the same amount no matter what.

You mean the way it was from 1975 to 1982? Because the rhythm guitar on GYOW during those years was a very minor addition to the sound -- almost negligible.

However, there's the organ . . . I still don't know how I feel about that. I suppose it's okay to have somebody play the organ on things like GYOW or I'm So Afraid.
Quote:

Same goes for Brett, without him they drop half the act. I don't like the growing presence on stage but most of their songs would hardly work without rhythmn guitar or keys.
Most of their songs worked beautifully without rhythm guitar onstage, & many of their songs would work just fine without keyboards. During the years with Christine, the keyboards were about half the time not a prominent part of the texture, just some little dillies off in the sonic background. Apparently, it's difficult to get a keyboardist-for-hire to sink back into the background.

Of course, the real problem with keyboards-for-hire these days for Fleetwood Mac is that they overrely on keyboard hardware rather than actual keyboard playing. So it's not really Brett we should blame but the whole band because it's the whole band who agrees to the overuse of computer chips in these state-of-the-art synthesizers (which provide everything from instruments to vocals to "found sounds").

Lindsey's better than Stevie on piano . . . but not by much.

As for Stevie brushing up, it seems dubious. We have recordings of her playing "Rhiannon" thirty years ago & we have recordings of her playing "Rhiannon" six or seven years ago, & over that twenty- to twenty-five-year period, she shows no progress whatsoever in her playing.

It's the damnedest thing I've ever heard.

La Nicks can play it better than the chords she played in that sniglet of Dreams - on the ABC special for the TISL tour, she plays a little of HAEWAFY and that little bit sounded delightful if not melodic. Interestingly, Stevie actually played guitar onstage in the early 70's  and has said she could again if she practiced. Thus, she has some talent in guitar as well, though no way near approaching LB's

Her best playing & singing simultaneously was "Sisters" on the 20/20 program in 1980. But Stevie's piano "style" just isn't something I can imagine being of much use to Fleetwood Mac in a live setting, & I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. Being able to play some chords is not the same thing as being able to play those chords within the context of a band: with the latter, you have to have the ability to "lock in" & blend -- it's an additional set of skills.

Did she actually play during a concert? It's possible that the photos we have are from rehearsals for GYOW (we talked about the Rumours rehearsal & her guitar playing in an old thread).

Doesn't she play some acoustic guitar on one of the demos on "Enchanted"? "Twisted" maybe? It's a very little-girly sound, but it's clean & on the meter.

That was it -- the first leg of the tour when the band played "Save Me a Place." My hunch is that Chris is better on guitar than Stevie is; Chris played bass in an old band in the 1960s. But maybe any difference in skill between those two would be minimal. Stevie just isn't, in general, terrifically gifted as an instrumentalist. Doesn't seem to be her thing. . . .kind of like John's two or three examples of "singing" over the years.

Yea - her style is not exactly an accompanying one - to say the least  I was just thinking about all the garage bands I have heard where the "keyboardist" just literally plays three chords to fill out the sound. Personally, I think she would be too nervous to do it becuase her playing is not that great. But, her playing on the SOTM demo is good - not great - but good and if I remember correctly it was in that segment as well. I think she can play fairly well but in a simplistic manner. I think she just does not want to play too well lest they make her on stage

That very well could be. She is not in her stage outfit. But, they are old pix and could be prior to the black schpeel.

I think it would be interesting to see LB and La Nicks play by themselves - just the two of them - to Lansdslide and, perhaps even more so, SOTM or GDW. That would be STUNNING to me, esp. after having grown tired of the methodical performances of these two over the last 30 years

I think LB and La Nicks have both said CM is a true classically trained musician, while neither of them are. I nfact, LB and La Nicks have said they consciously eschewed any significant formal training because they feared the structure would box in or inhibit their creativity. In fact, although she probably can read a chord sheet, I think La Nicks has said she cannot read music - not that that is any indication of talent becuase many, like Elton John, cannot as well. But, I agree, I think CM was the most musically talented in the band as far as knowledgeable playing -- I miss her :distress:

I defy anyone to identify her playing in that blowsy blues-rock track! If it's there, it's buried so far underneath everything else that you'd need a Doppler radar.

Which is just silly on their part. Moreover, I think too many fans mystify Christine's "classical training." All that type of training really means -- unless you're being trained as a concert pianist -- is that 1) you are being taught to read music using any of the traditional method books like Schaum or Thompson, 2) you are learning something about the classical repertoire & composers as you go along, & 3) you are learning music theory in a traditional way.

Classical training doesn't necessarily make you a better player. It just builds your frame of reference.

As in instrumentalist, I think Lindsey or John has more talent than Chris (who is technically very ordinary but who has an alluring personal style of playing). And going back, Peter, Jeremy, Danny & Bob Welch struck me as more talented instrumentally.

I pretty much agree - I was just saying that CM's "knowledgeable playing" was perhaps better in the sense she could actually sit down and read a sheet of music, etc., as opposed to LB and La Nicks who must rely on instict, limited formal knowledge, etc. I was commenting on the ability to read music tends to open up things more quickly to someone than not being able tyo read it. I was not saying CM was technically better or that her end result was better - though in the case of songs like "Songbird" and "Why" that may be true to my ears, which is of course subjective

Having said that, I am unsure if Peter, Jeremy, Danny & Bob Welch read music. If so, then that argument would not apply to them. But and in any event, IMO - no one has been able to have any better playing (trained or not) than Peter Green. I think he is amongst the top three best I have ever heard.

As for La Nicks on Whole Lotta Trouble - who knows - there is alot going on in that song  - so it is hard to tell who plays what

Yep, she plays guitar on the "Twisted" demo, as well as rhythm guitar (and harmonica!) on "Free Fallin'," and synth guitar and synth strings on the "Sweet Girl" demo.

Just catching up here ... but I can't help but ask... what difference does it make if she plays or not?

Stevie's primary instrument is her voice. Why is she seen as less of a musician because she plays rudimentary guitar and piano? I'd venture to guess that Lindsey on drums would be migraine-inducing (not to mention hilarious) and John on keyboards would have the dogs a-howlin'! Is Mick less of a drummer because he can't sing?

I was just saying it could five the four a fuller sound. I agree La Nicks is a musician - I do not think she can play an instrument very well as she readily admits, but when she wants to - she can make her voice sound like the best solo from any player

Did he really - I just have this vision of him on the bathroom floor with an empty kleenex  Actually, I think LB is a little like Prince in that he can play and do most anything - I mean the man played a BANJO for The Dance for goodness sake!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, I'm a cryer. or a weeper, whatever. Especially at beauty. For instance, sometimes i weep when i'm watching gymnastics, cause it is so impossible and magnificent. He plays most of the instruments on all his solo albums. His most interesting piano track is the one on his first solo album for "September Song." He says he doesn't have any trouble with most plectrum-type instruments, but he's not really a pianist.

Of the various keyboard tracks Stevie has recorded for her solo albums, the one that stands out as obviously Stevie is the electric piano on "Love Changes": it's a rhythmic series of chord changes at the top of every measure that's just right for Stevie's ability.
