I thought that this was a really tough question, but a very good one! :D I had to think on it a few days.

(1)Fleetwood Mac--Live in Passaic 1975. My all-time favorite. It has the Welsh Witch intro, which is neat. She hits all those notes perfectly. She is just so "into it," and I think this version especially highlights that era of Rhiannon. The guitar solo is great. I love the ummmmmmmmmm's before she does "Dreams Unwind~~Love's a State of Mind." I love the yell at the end. Perfection all the way around!

Here are some others I really like, as well. I like each of these for different reasons, but I'll save you guys the blabbing and just list these :D :

Stevie Nicks---9/17/94 Hollywood, CA "Welcome to My World;"
Stevie Nicks--"Dreamer" (complication from "White Wing Dove Tour and "Wild Heart Tour);
Fleetwood Mac-Shine Angel from St. Louis 1979 and Oakland 1982; and
Fleetwood Mac---Dancing Alone--(It is a live, Dance era version, but her vocals are really up front on this track.).

If I could pick a favorite studio version, I would have to go with the Single Mix, which is on Fleetwood Mac B-sides and More Disc 1. It is just fabulous! :D

I would like to contend that the best performance of Rhiannon in that last 20 years has been Live at The House of Blues 1994. Yes, The Street Angel Tour!

It has an extended intro not remarkably dissimilar to that of the Dance Tour. The actual body of the song, aside from Stevie taking a lot more liberties vocally, is not overly distinguishable. And yes, Lindsey is not playing guitar. Tear.

However, the ending, beginning with "Dreams unwind..." is all sung the EXACT same way as it had been nearly 20 years before! There is less screaming, but the DREAMS UNWIND, STILL IT'S A STATE OF MIND etc. etc. are all done on that high G or whatever it is, I used to know it. The note that Stevie sings a full octave lower these days. It's crazy. When I first heard it, I hadn't thought she had been able to hit those notes since at least 1982. And here she was, singing Live 80 all over again. The very end manages to stay in her upper register, never dipping to the depths it saw during The Dance or SYW Tour, yet still captures "Whooaaa.. you still cry out to her, and he says, don't leave me, DON'T leave me........." It works very well high, and makes me wish she never got lazy.

Another gem from this performance is Stand Back, which I believe to be the definitive version. Again, she's not afraid to take all the chances, even some we'd never heard. What a groundbreaking concert!

I hate to break it to you, but that end part is all a studio overdub.
I went to the show the night before the taping, and her voice was pretty ragged. I was also there the night of the taping in question, and it was being simulcast on a local radio station - KLSX if my memory serves me correctly. I taped that live broadcast and it was dismal. Her voice was in terrible shape.
Every offical ''recording" with those strong high notes that I have heard gives itself away quickly. If you listen closely, you can hear that she is singing over a very low volume track of her original vocal. They were either too lazy to take it off or her vocal wasn't recorded on a separate track.

I agree it is a good version - but a live version it wasn't. There were some great renditions of Rhainnon on that tour. I saw the tour 7 or 8 times. But none of them were nearly as strong as that studio overdub. Not even close.

For the record, my favorite versions of this song were from the Tusk tour. Like I have said many times, the song now needs to be retired. I no longer like it. It's essentially a fluid break for me.

I too like the Rosebud version, with the little intro about the novel and all. The performance is very good.
I also loved Rhiannon this tour, especially in Bakersfield Oct. 15 2003.

I know - apprently, that GORGEOUS version of Destiny was overdubbed as well!!!!!!!!!!! So, I guess it really does not count :sorry:

LOL. I never made it that far into the show on the recording...or I skipped it. After about the second date on that tour, Destiny became my fluid break. Which is, incidentally, when I saw the famous 'drag queens run out the men's room incident' in Vegas. Priceless !

HAHA.

It wasn't that dramatic. Me and my buddy were off for our regular 'Destiny' beer/bathroom break. We got near the Aladdin Men's room and there was quite a ruckus. Lots of yelling and swearing. Then two Towering Inferno Glamazons exploded out the Men's room entrance in a flurry of blonde wigs, chiffon, and fringes a flying. The presentation on both was complete with platforms. Each was nearly 7 feet tall. This was a notable occasion for me as it was the first time I had seen guys in Stevie drag at a show. Also, it was the first time I noticed that the audience was so ultra homo skewed. My buddy and I both said that night, "We thought we were the only gay guys into Stevie !" Au contraire. It was like a friggin gay parade in that joint. If you would have taken out all of us homos and the BBW's, that place would have been 1/3 full. :lol:

Well, that's unfortunate there, sparky, because the Vegas performance of "Destiny" was one of the two best on the entire tour (the other being Holmdel, New Jersey).

"Destiny" was fantastic throughout, though. It featured some of the best ensemble harmony singing Stevie & her friends have ever done live. They were perfectly on key, clear & strong. It was a Stevie Maalox Moment.

I had been out of the collecting dodge for many years by 1994, but it was really Stevie's singing -- especially on "Destiny" -- that revved me up again & made me buy a Goldmine magazine just to get started in the trading once again, primarily because I wanted tapes from the Street Angel shows. So Stevie's really responsible for giving me my second wind as a collecting fan! (Of course, it was Stevie who was responsible for my calling it quits to begin with.)

I don't doubt it was a nice version of the song. Alas, the song itself is a

Wow, that story made me sad...I didn't know the Timespace tour was such a debacle. Though i understand "before" stevie compared with "more recent" Stevie. Wow, glad you're back. I live in CA, too. I don't know why i said that.... :p

Timespace was NOT that bad IMO. She did some great songs.

-both hits from OSOTM
-IF ANYONE FALLS
-Introduced the Stand Back kick
-Amazing version of Edge of Seventeen
-I Need to Know never rocked any harder
-Changed almost every song
-Rhiannon brought back memories of Rosebud days!
-Landslide was awesome especially with the backup singers

Darling, the whole show was overdubbed. Listen to the unedited radio broadcast, then the Westwood One broadcast and they are two totally different beasts, the latter being almost all studio overdubs.

Oh, I thought Timespace was the pits. Really, really awful. She was not into in the least, her voice was really shot, the synth-heavy songs were too much to handle, the costumes were horrific, she looked haggard, it was just terrible.

I'm with David in that the Street Angel tour BLEW ME AWAY. To me, that's quite possibly her best tour. :nod:

Dissetion I agree when i traded for my first SA bootleg Video i was blown away. i thought it was incredible. Street angel is my 2nd or 3rd fav tour from her. Stand back was awesome with her white wings. and I really enjoyed the top hat for I Need to Know. Talk to Me was also excellent!

Darling, I have both of them. I couldn't stomach the concert when I was there. I think the only time in recent memory that I have heard anything from the overdubbed show has been from downloading the Rhiannon's that circulate endlessly...fooling all and sundry that they were original vocals. The fact that I can't ever remember hearing the whole Westwood One show is a sign that
a) I have too many bootleg cassette tapes
b) I have been far too busy since 1994
c) At one time I had WAY too much time on my hands - going to a concert and simultaneously taping the show off the radio with a cassette player.

Yes, the setlist was great. BUT Stevie was not great vocally for that tour. There's a few shows that are decent, but generally, not her best performances, IMO.

As far as the Welcome to my World unedited, yes, the voice is rough & scratchy at times. BUT she still belted every song out tremendously, despite the fact that she was ill. I think it's a great performance, with or without the overdubs.

Of the shows I saw & all the shows I've heard from 1991, I'd say that Irvine Meadows was the best night vocally for Stevie. But most of the other shows were embarrassments: Dallas, Wantagh, Holmdel, the pro-shot video from Mountain View, the show at the Whiskey, etc. And that band of hers that year . . . God help. They had all the personality & finesse of a runaway train with tin cans tied to the caboose. The band comprised the worst elements of AOR muscle rock like Heart & Poison -- loud, vapid & shlocky. And Stevie herself -- flat, toneless gabbling, dressed like a female impersonator's idea of Mae West (someone I know once said she dressed like an African-American woman going to Sunday church in Biloxi in 1955).

I call it Stevie's NASCAR year.

I totally agree.

But you should have seen her at the Boston show. ;) I was expecting her to just fall over and die from boredom. Quite possibly the worst I've ever seen her. She sang as if she was snoring simultaneously. She kept looking over to the side as if she was trying to get a look at the clock to see if it was time to go back to bed yet. I got the audio boot for it a few months ago finally and it had a pre-show interview with her where she was really energetic and talkative (only like five minutes before she was to go onstage). Whatever happened in those five minutes, I guess I'll never know.

Check it out!! I think most of the tour is recorded -- fifteen or twenty shows at least. Check on some of the trader rings like the Underground. You'll probably find your favorites!

The most ive seen is about 8 shows on major trade pages.

Do you have any info on Other Side of the Mirror shows that you could give me. I do kno a good number of them were recorded.

She overindulged in crab cakes before the show, and it caught up with her? She took a puff off a doob? she couldn't breathe in her tight-a** corset? I'm the wrong guy to ask about tapes from these years, but there are a lot of them out there. There's even some video, like the 1991 Jones Beach show & the 1989 Los Angeles show at the Greek Theatre. I think there's even some video of the 1989 Toronto show with "Talk to Me" or "Juliet," as well as the video from the Cal Expo show in Sacramento (I skipped a graduate seminar to attend that concert -- in retrospect, I should have gone to class). Plus, there is audio from some of the 1989 European dates, including Paris (the Paris show I remember because it's a good clear recording with plenty of treble & bass). You probably already have the two pro-shot videos -- 1989 & 1991 -- both shot at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Another thread on the Stevie board reminded me. Did you guys know that the "Stand Back" & "Leather & Lace" from Oakland '83 were vocal redubs, too? I think "Beauty & the Beast" from that broadcast was authentic, but the other two were phony! Good vocals, but phony.

That Toronto video is painful. It's so out of focus and blurry that she just looks like a blob. Greek Theatre is better, but she's immobile...sort of like that hair of hers.

Sorry to bring this thread out of retirement, but I was just reading the BN board where someone was asking about a live performance of Rhiannon where she screams "Is that what you want from me" or something to that effect. I guess Mick talked about it in his book. Forgive me if this was already discussed in another thread, but I've already searched the threads for about an hour looking for it. So anyway...does anyone know what performance this is from? Also does anyone know what performance it was that her voice cracked really bad on Rhiannon that Mick also talks about in his book? Thanks!

That's just a vocal vamp that she threw in a bunch of Rhiannons on the last month of the 1980 tour. If you can find any of those August shows (Mobile soundboard, Hollywood Bowl #1 or #2, Lakeland, Tucson, Birmingham, Atlanta, Oklahoma City, etc.), you'll hear Stevie sing "Is that what you want?" in a couple of different ways. The best sound quality recording is the Mobile soundboard. Tiff posted it a few months ago.

Mick makes it sound as if it happened once, but Stevie did it for weeks.

Ok, thanks David! I have several of those shows so I will have to take a listen. :) Do you know anything about the ones where her voice cracks really bad?
