I have to go with Thrown Down, so far. I just love it. And I love the new lyrics. It would have been Smile At You...but I'm still pouting over the missing flaming wails. :D

Second would be a tie between Peacekeeper and SYHA, I think.

I'm surprised WTWCT isn't more popular. To me that's a classic Mac opener in the style of Monday Morning or Second Hand News.

I wasn't sure about the phrasing of the words, with Lindseys voice, but the song is brilliantly catchy. Second verse has me tapping my foot every time.

My favorite is Destiny Rules followed by Say You Will. I was not too crazy about her vocal in the beginning of the song, either. However, I love this song so much I can over look it. Hey at least it is not a synthesized sounding voice like a lot of music out today.

SYW for me. Intelligent lyrics, a clear chorus, an upbeat melody.

Like Thown Down.

Like Peacekeeper, mainly due to the harmonies Stevie adds in the chorus.

Destiny Rules is okay. As I posted, the vocals sounded better at The B & N listening ceneter than they sound online. The song sounds like it could fin in on Out of the Cradle --- something bout the guitar & beat.

SYHA would fit on Mirage between Book of Love & Eyes of the World. WWCT sounds like Love in Store to me.

I can appreciate that Lindsey wants to branch out & innovate from the demos; I just wish he hadn't done it to Smile at You. This was not a song that needed fixing. He could hve broken from the Mirage sound (after all, he doesn't like that album) on the other two songs I mentioned rather than tweaking on of Stevie's so much. JMO. I'm concerned for RTTG, as I have enough trouble imagining it without the keyboards. Now they've gotten rid of the layered vocals. Please tell me the vocals are still angry! - Jake

Besides, I would be prejudice to say Peacekeeper because I've heard it in its entirety and heard it so many times that I just keep WANTING to hear it, and the damn Pittsburgh radio stations won't play it (I've heard it only twice).

I've heard it MANY times, actually, on 92.9....in fact, it just came on now!

What station(s) have you heard it on?

Rumours 03-30-2003 04:48 PM

Thanks for that Josh!
I'll have to see if I'm able to pick up 92.9, because no station around here has been playing any new Mac. At least not that I've heard.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this album does NOT sound like the Fleetwood Mac that I know? I'm not saying that the album's bad or anything, I love it, but it just sounds different.

The absence of Christine and the fact that both Lindsey and Stevie's voices have gotten deeper affect the sound, but I think the biggest change is in the production. It sounds to me like there are more instrumental layers than Lindsey has used before (with FM, that is), and fewer vocal layers. From what I've heard, it sounds like a much more experimental album than the white album or Rumours, or perhaps even Tusk. Of course, one reason for this is that there's simply a whole bunch more one can do production-wise today than there was in 1979. In summary, I think this album sounds more like TISL than anything Fleetwood Mac has put out.

So far, my favorite song has been Smile At You. The vocals on this song are overwhelming. I hope they do this one live.

I agree totally. But I'd say fat chance on them doing this one live, just beacuse of the strain it would cause on Stevie's voice and her own inhibitions. If she did choose to do it live though, she would probably rework the melody a la Sorcerer during the TISL tour, and it would really loose a lot of the magic.

It was also noted that RTTG is also very good keeping the "magic" of the demo but without the dual voice tracks.....Hmmmmm I hope Lindsey does better w/ this track then Smile at you......
Noooooooo!!! You can't have The Tower without the piano!!!! And what's this, no dual voice track!!!

ARRRRRRGHHHHH!

I HATE YOU LINDSEY!

*ok, calming down*

But seriously, I'm really getting pissed off with Lindsey's arrangements here. Smile At You is a total dissapointment, I can't believe what he did with this song. He totally ruined a good thing. :(

I have to agree with Adam, I am going to be missing the piano and keyboards. Even though I don't exactly miss Christine, I do miss that instrument.

I hope Goodbye Baby and RTTG aren't dissapointments as Smile At You is.

Anyway, as for the songs... I'm gonna say that even though I like the older leaked version of Thrown Down, the new one is still my favorite, followed by Peacekeeper, Say you will, Destiny Rules, SYHA, Smile at you, WTTCT.

It actually surprises me that people are so disappointed by the new arrangement of "Smile At You."

Lyrically, the new version is more in keeping with the 'Tusk'-era outtake, so it's not surprising that all of the "flaming... flaming" stuff isn't there, as it was only evident on the 'Mirage' outtake.

It also isn't surprising to me that the so-called "angriness" isn't there... since, again, it seems to be following the vibe of the 'Tusk'-era outtake, as opposed to the 'Mirage'-era version.

Personally, I've always liked the lyrics of the song, and Lindsey's guitar (especially as it sounds on the 'Tusk' outtake), but I felt the overall arrangement of both outtake versions was rather pedestrian.

I'm thrilled with the new version. To me, it blows the outtakes out of the water.
Though I still think they could have done something a little more dramatic with the ending.

I'm still on the fence about the new Smile at You, for me I was never expecting the angry version that some people just loved to pieces...I personally like the Tusk outtake much better....
I love Stevies vocal and the verses of the new version...Its just the chorus seems completely improvised and not well thought out somehow...and lingers longer than it should....I dont miss the piano at all....I just wish they would have approached the chorus differently...

the funny thing is....If I had never heard the demo...i would probably LOVE this song unconditionally. sometimes thats the raw truth about putting so much energy into some of these demos.....I'm also really trepidatious about the outcomes of RTTG & The Tower, as these have been favorites for years. The Tower is just so hauntingly beautiful and I love it stripped down....AND the opposite is true of RTTG, although I could probably live without the synth heavy mid-80's production....I love its intensity and Stevies stinging overdubbed vocals.

I wish someone who has heard an advance copy would post a review of these songs....but they probaly dont want to get barraged with requests to send the songs via Mp3 or e-mail. Oh well....only 16 more days......

Well Johnny Stew, it is suprising me that people like the new Smile At You so much. LOL I find it kind of boring. I am so missing the old piano intro which kicked ass, very dramatic, and of course Lindsey's scorching guitar licks. Not to mention Stevie's delivery. Oh well, can't please everyone. I'll just be listening to the demo now.

Ahhhh, perfection.

Yeah, I prepared myself to be ready for a less angry version. And there actually is still a hint of anger in her voice there...not as intense as the "Flaming" version, but it's there. I just really didn't expect the guitar to disappear. And the "Ah-ah" 's just don't cut it as a replacement for me.

I actually do like the song. If I had never heard the demos, I'd be all over it. I even like that it has a "Tango" feel to it. It's hard to describe how it just misses for me. But I by no means dislike the song, or would even skip over it on the CD.

I just think they missed the boat by not putting it on Mirage 21 years ago.

BINGO

Smile at You needs that piano intro, and that scorching guitar and Stevie's energy. Sure that'd kick off Straight Back. but we could have Straight Back now
