Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in the 70s and 80s the tours role was to support the record sales. Nowadays the tours are the point in the business model so they have to perform a great show. Then the records are losing their crucial role.

Yeah, but by 2004, they were already loaded. But yes, these people identified themselves as a live band, and their identities flowed from that. Still, SYW would have slayed with Christine.

I also think some of the animosity she shows in her songs was directed, consciously or otherwise, at the band’s refusal to let her record without touring. She may have been writing love songs, but the album’s title reveals a lot more…

Of course--and that's the context. But I think there is a subtext where she is working through the rejection of not being able to work on SYW. I remember sensing it at the time, too.

She did make some comments about how freeing it was to be able to record with Dan...HER way and without pressure.
