Well, I guess all mothers and fathers are different- especially depending on how old you are yourself in the first place.
I'm just picturing the sort of stuff that would appeal to my mum- she'd go for the softer, more laid back, 'poppy' romantic and generally sentimental songs... things that have lots of 'love this, love that, love you, love him, love her' etc etc.
Men of a certain age in my family would be more likely to dig anything with guitars in it. I think (on the whole) men are more likely to appreciate bluesy-type music. Dad's are (a bit) more likely to associate with angst and melancholy.
I actually got into FM through my parents. They played Tango In The Night to death in the car. Aside from that album I dont think they were ever particularly big fans though.
