live in concert I have to say I see equal parts LB & Mark Knopfler...Though K.U. did toss a pick in the audience at the Sept.2001 show that ended up underneath my roachstomper, which became part of Debbie's K.U. memorabilia - C'mon K.U., a guitar pick when ya played the whole show WITHOUT one (We had front row seats) then ya toss one, lame :thumbsup:

Born and raised in Alabama... I travel a lot for my work and I could tell you SO many stories of how the OTHER places in the country—many of which would give Bama the eyeroll—exhibit more of the characteristics they project on us (racism, bigotry, backwoodsiness, what-have-you) than I have ever seen in my hometown or home state. But such is perception.

Besides traveling, I've hired people to work here in Birmingham from all over. My favorite story is a couple who moved here from Philly more than a decade ago now. They say they still tell all their friends who live in Philly that Alabama is awful, just so THEY won't move here and ruin it. :)

And yes, Birmingham is a special place for a Fleetwood Mac fan. I took my five-year-old to see Lindsey when he was here last summer. Lindsey gave a great talk about the BN days in Alabama, and how special it was. And every time they come here, they mention it... though they won't be making it on this tour.

I'm seeing the band in Boston in June... can't wait. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying what passes for winter in Alabama, and looking forward to a beautiful, sunny, blue-sky day in the 60s tomorrow. Not bad for February.

A Connecticut radio DJ was talking about the cruise ship with the problems finally docking on land in Mobile, Alabama. He went on to joke that this would be the only time people would celebrate being in Alabama.

That DJ apparently doesn't realize that American Mardi Gras celebration originated in Mobile, AL. :D

I wish I had better things to say about Alabama. I live there now. I am originally from Kentucky. KY isn't much better. Cross a bridge and I would have been in Ohio (a far better place to live, IMHO).

It's likely that the bigger cities in AL are great places to live. Unfortunately, I'm in a rural part of AL. People here are very closed minded. If you are not into Christianity, you are made to feel very unwelcome.

You're right you would probably feel more comfortable in a bigger city. I'm Jewish and I'm very open with my faith. I understand how it can be more difficult in areas where the population is not as dense and everyone knows everyone else. That's a throwback to an earlier time when people would use familial pressure to force conformity. Luckily you are able to express yourself online, it helps mitigate the feelings of isolation.

Yes, the pressure to conform here is major. My husband is originally from here. That's how I ended up here. His family (like most here) are very 'God-fearing'.

I don't really care what people here think of me. I just worry that they will mistreat our son just because his parents are 'not like everyone else'.
