Count me as a fan of Paper Doll, too. I also love the video. Not to scream and shout, though. :)

That totally sets the mood for me. I confess to being one of those crazy kind of folks that sings while walking down the street listening to their CD walkman. You know the kind - the kind of strange folks you try to avoid on the street.
I like to believe that I am spreading the word of...well..."Stevie" - to all that will listen. There are certain Stevie songs that I feel everyone on the planet should be able to hear.

"Paper Doll" is always on my top ten list of things to sings to the world at large. I also find that my singing habits keep the muggers away from me!

If you ever feel physically threatened on the streets or in some dark alley - simply bust into song with the tail end of Stevie's live Mirage tour version of "Sisters Of The Moon" They'll never know what hit them! It's better than mace!

This is my top ten list of songs I love to sing to while walking down the street listening to my CD walkman acting like a fool but I just don't care.

i always wondered whether Lindsey was in the chorus on that one...i always thought i heard him but wasn't sure since there really was no credits to prove it.

i didn't like this song overall at first. i couldn't believe it was actually getting airplay. but there were certain parts of it that i kind of liked such as verses: "yesterday i was fascinated..." and
"he says, well i have forgotten you..." now i actually like the song a lot better than i used to. i guess it's grown on me although i haven't heard it in a while.

when you listen to stevie's late 80's/early 90's stuff, you really have to forget about the "rhiannons" and the "saras" and the "gypsys" etc etc because she wasn't going for that kind of sound at that time. Plus, she needed to branch out and try some new arrangements since the older stuff had gotten beaten into the ground.

On first listen, it's a tad jarring. But it certainly grows on you faster than fungus. I love the "Well, I have forgotten you and your beautiful eyyyyyyyyyyes." One of her better songs from tat era! :D

This is a top-five favorite Mac song for me, and my wife's all-time favorite. There's so much going on in the song, both musically and lyrically, and it's so different from the "normal" Mac sound.

I've always felt this song was about the Buckingham Nicks cover shoot and the time around the BN album. Stevie has talked about the nude shot in interviews as being a thing she regrets in her career and something that made her vastly uncomfortable. I know Stevie's songs are often a hodge-podge lyrically and therefore tough to interpret but think about it:

"You could have said no
You could have said well I just can't"

Stevie has used those exact words about the BN cover shoot in interviews.

"Woah we were off the wall
We were mirrors of each other"

The picture was certainly off the wall, and the front and back covers of the BN album are mirror images.

The whole concept of "Paper Doll" could be seen as being about dressing up (or not dressing at all).

Often knowing a little FM or SN history makes her songs much more meaningful. I've always seen this song in that light.

I always heard this line as such:

"You prefer to be just a little bit in and out of apathy"

Which makes sense considering the following line...

"And not to scream and shout"

The thought being that not caring that much is easier than caring to much.

I don't hear "agony"

I always thought it was "you prefer to be just a little bit in and out of love with me."

Does anyone have the video they can email to me? I have looked all over to no avail....

I hear that too! And I think it makes much more sense that way.

It's the second line in question....let me spell it out...

It's either agony or apathy. Probably "agony" but "apathy" would
be more dynamic.

From the very first time I ever heard the song, I've always very plainly heard "in and out of agony" the second time.

As great as the Nicksfix is, they do get a lyric wrong sometimes. :)


By the way, deribish, it does almost sound as if Stevie is singing, "I have forgotten you and your beautiful lies."
I actually like the line better that way. :)
