Whatever she does on this album, I hope Stevie has pushed herself in her lyrics. What reads well as a poem or journal entry doesn't necessarily translate to a great lyric. In the past twenty years, there have been a lot of her songs with a great verse or a great chorus that are let down by lazy writing in the rest of the song.

If you divide 33 by 8 you get just over 4.1 years between Stevie Solo records!
Counting the two greatest hits packages, Soundstage Sessions and Enchanted it comes out to 2.75 years between releases. Counting the additional video packages, the HBO special, Redrocks, Soundstage and Documentary it is 2 years between solo "events" Not counting appearances on soundtracks, guest appearances on other people's albums, the one off "Christmas" things etc.... I would say that she has had a pretty good career in Spurts and Stats and grinding halts. (the period between 2001 and 2011 being the worst! |
Stevie's total studio output isn't very impressive considering the total span of her career, even with Fleetwood Mac included. But, it is what it is - I wouldn't give up any of it or wish any of it undone.
I do wish she recorded more frequently, however. She certainly has written enough to have half-a-dozen more albums than she does currently. But I'm grateful for what she's released, and for all those master reels and demos to make up for what she hasn't released. |

from Today show website today: "As a legend in her own time, with over 50 years in the music business, Dolly Parton could be forgiven if she wanted to rest on her laurels. Instead, the country music singer, songwriter and actress has just released her 42nd album, "Blue Smoke," and is in the middle of a world tour. During a visit to TODAY Tuesday, Parton said she won't be slowing down anytime soon." |
Dolly Parton is not the same thing as Stevie Nicks.
Dolly writes SOME of her own songs, maybe more than half, depending on the theme of the album. However, she mostly does covers and sings songs written by other people. Stevie SELDOM records a song written by someone else. One could also state, and I think even Dolly Parton would agree, that what Dolly records is mostly "Crap" for the sake of "crap" and putting something out. A lot of Dolly's albums are throw away crap. Crap crap crap. No staying power. Dated. Drivel. AND I LIKE Dolly Parton. Stevie holds her recording to a almost magical altar of magic and treats each song like a child. Unless it is from the Klonapin era she still loves that child. When was the last time she did anything from OSOTM or SA? once? in 1999? ROF? So yah, I dont think the original poster was talking about interpreters of songs like Dolly, or Linda etc.... but rather solo artists that are songwritters and singers of their own songs. Being a part of a Band and going solo, not many other artists can do that. Especially a woman. Natalie Merchant comes to mind. But even she LEFT and never went back. Stevie has had 7 and counting solo efforts, plus 8(ish) and counting FM, not counting compilations. |

wonder with such huge output whether the number of songs Dolly has actually written is en par or way more than number of songs Stevie has actually written? and then there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Will_Always_Love_You supposedly Dolly said about that song, when it first went to #1, i took the money i made to the bank. when Whitney's version went to #1, i owned the bank. |

Well, by "Crap" I mean more along the lines of Pop for Pop sakes. Studio style mainstream stuff that Dolly recorded because it was a flash in the pan sorta Pop country song. No substance. Just filler.
I think that is Dolly's genius. She can sit there and write a song in 5 minutes just because. Stevie on the other hand needs to ponder it, have a frame of reference, sleep on it, and have this long drawn out process. Very rarely have you heard Stevie tell a story about how she just wrote a song in 5 minutes. Her process is much more laborious. Dolly is a business women, and maybe even a definition genius. the Ditz routine is an act. She has a brain, despite being a self described "dumb blonde". Stevie....well we know she is not a natural blonde, but she sure can be dumb! haha |

I've never been much into re-recorded old album tracks, but I wouldn't mind Dave giving "Smile at You" at try. I'm hoping a version produced by Dave and Stevie makes it on the album or at least a b-side or onto a movie soundtrack.

I just still struggle to see why anyone wants Dave to have ANYTHING thing to do with her songs in general.

:xoxo: listen to the TISL version. it is the ONLY version same with My Heart. Dave, stay away. |
Dolly Parton isn't a good comparison. It would be more accurate to compare Stevie to other artists who've juggled solo careers and band membership fairly concurrently. Which is pretty rare.
For example, Don Henley and Glenn Frey recorded 7 studio albums with The Eagles over the past 42 years, and have recorded 5 solo albums each. Despite a large gap in time when the Eagles were disbanded. Based on similar eras, genres, and fan-bases, their careers are probably the closest analogy to Stevie's. |

I'm still shocked and caught off guard with this awesome news about Stevie is recording a solo record. |
[Martina mentions Stevie in this interview]
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/en...ry-meets-soul/ McBride plays a hands-on role in running the studio with her husband, who engineered the album's tracks. "Blackbird Studios are so busy it's hard to keep up with who is booked in at any one time," she explains. "Stevie Nicks is there at the moment recording her new album. And Keith Urban has recorded a lot of his music there." |

Stevie Nicks BMI ICON awards AP interview http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/US...age=1&b=c42d8b
Stevie Nicks on the material for her upcoming solo album: "We went on to YouTube and we found all the songs that, somehow, were taken from my house or picked up or loaned out or whatever, and we picked up all the songs that like -- there was like 25 songs that the fans really wanted me to record, and we picked 18. And we went to Nashville and we recorded 17 songs. So they're like all starting from like 1969 maybe? I call them my 24-carat gold songs There's a solo album on the way, with 17 so-called "trunk" songs -- things Nicks had written and, in some cases, performed over the years that fans requested be properly recorded and put into an album. A new Fleetwood Mac album is coming, too, as well as a big Mac tour, beginning 30 September in Minneapolis. |
This is great news and very excited to hear what songs she has recorded. Even if she never wrote another song, there's enough material in the vault that would fill several albums and most likely many more that have never been leaked. I liked her last album and glad to hear she's working with Dave again.

I actually think Dave could do something cool with Julia...

I'd absolutely love if Stevie re-recorded "Julia" for this album. I love the flavor her latter-day voice adds to these old songs. I do still hope, however, that the 'Bella Donna' era outtake of "Julia" someday finds a home on a remastered edition.
This is very exciting news all around. I'm so thrilled! Years ago when my ex and I would "talk Stevie," I had a wishlist of things I had hoped she'd do over the next several years. I wanted a new album, a live DVD, a collection of her "vaulted" songs, and a DVD of her videos. They came in a different order, and slower than I might have hoped, but how cool that every one of them will ultimately have been checked off. |
They did 17 songs in 12 days or whatever it was ? (I'm too lazy to go back and verify how long they were in the studio in Nashville). Hmm…..
I wonder if she will tweak any of the old songs the way she did with Lady from the Mountain/ Moonlight. Not sure how I feel about that…though some of them were incomplete…. I just pray this isn't one of those "be careful what you wish for…" events |
I'm so happy that she raided her vaults and pull out those demos.
|
Recording these demos is wonderful news to my ears. Wouldn't it be great if she included a companion CD with the same songs in their demo form?
