I know there was alot of sepculation about this song and its orgins when we all first got the track listing before SYW's release, First was it Lindsey's or Stevie's song?...Then when was it written?....so on and so forth...since it is obviously not one of the 4 Stevie penned specifically for the new CD...It just occurred to me this morning when I was waking up...strange how some things just come to you....
This song has got to be the same song that was registered w/ the copyright office under the working title of "In the Darkness" ("When love starts out in the darkness...it doesnt do well in the light, affairs of the heart that start out in the dark, usually stay with the night...") written in 1999, and intended for TISL-one of the ones she pulled along w/ Thrown Down and Not Make Believe.

Nice detective work, Christopher. I'm sure you're right.
These are definitely some of the best, most direct lyrics Stevie has written in the past few years. Too bad they're not doing the song live!

Well, if that is true, then it very well may be written about Lindsey like Thrown Down was....they did go to Germany and some other countries during The Dance to perfrom, but not on tour, so maybe????? What do you guys think?

Oh wow, ya'll!
I have been trying to figure out what the "six weeks in a foregin country" part from DR means, and just how EFO fits into it all. Obviously she took a trip somewhere with SOMEBODY.

I didn't know FM went to Germany during that time! Does anybody know anymore details about that?

That could explain alot, AND why aren't they even talking about this song at all?

Has anyone else noticed that? I think the lyrics are direct and pretty clear, and certainly contrversial. I think much more contrversial than the "only kill" line from PK.

I just think it is strange there is no mention of it in interviews or anything. It's almost like Stevie doesn't want to elaborate about it.

I wonder if it is one of those forbidden topics the journalists aren't allowed to ask about? Hmmmmm.....

Well, the subject may be "verboten" but it is pretty clear what she's sayin' ain't it? ;)!

Wow - that could make sense why they are not doing Thrown Down and EFO in concert - they don't want to be questioned about the meaning of these songs.

You would think that if you want to keep an affair (w/ Lindsey or anybody else) a secret, you wouldn't want to put a song about "the affair" on an album for the whole world to hear.

This, my peeps, is why I find Mama Nicks so brilliant! ;)

You keep on rockin' in Mamas! And don't let them ask you any questions!

Although, the song is "Everybody Finds Out" so somehow I'm thinking we should all know at least a little something. Don't you?

Forget it, I just woke up ( I hate mornings). I have no idea what I just wrote. Y'all can just ignore that.

I feel EFO is about Don Henley with Stevie.

I only know that they appeared on a German television show during the Dance time because the attached picture has the logo of a German TV channel in the upper left corner. So they must have been in Europe for a while. ;)

The show is a Saturday evening show called "Wetten dass" and they performed "Silver springs". I saw it live on TV back then. It was a playback performance which surprised me, because the Dance video was so brilliant and all the reviews from their shows too. But it was great to see the band on german TV, so I was happy with it.

I think it's about Stevie & one of her married men a la "Secret Love".

Antje, the picture you posted is one of a set of pictures that I just adore!

There are four or five of them, and in a couple of them, they look like they are just about to kiss. They are looking at each other so adoringly, Lindsey puts his head down and leans into her so nice.

I guess that is why they look so intimate, since they were having their little "alone and foolish" time.

Oh, so sweet!

haha..and Stevie totally forgot to sing the words at the end...it is so funny cause they are lip syncing and her lips are not moving, she is just staring intently at Lindsey...She had to have hated that. Miss Girl should NEVER try to lip sync...she always changes the words..

Yes, Antje, let's do!

That third one is the one! Are they puckered up, or what?

And the last one! LB looks plum orgasmic!

No wonder she didn't want to come home. And who give a rat's pe-tooty about not being able to speak the language? S&L are making up their own, I would say!

BTW, when was this trip to Germany? I thought Stevie went pretty much straight into the Enchanted Tour following the Dance.

Can anyone give me a time line?

What detective work, people! I am so proud of these fellow Ledgies for figuring this out finally!

This is an incredible discovery --- it all makes sense, too: EFO lyrics, Destiny Rules lyrics, The Dance era Germany trip, these 4 pics from the time there (which I never knew the origin of until now!)... WAY to go! :]

BTW - regarding the German show pics: Stevie looks like she should be taking up residence in Lothlorien (of Middle Earth).....

Watched the "wetten daß" show in 1997, went online and answered 173 questions from Ledgies during 2 hours that night, it was GREAT. I remember that Stevie did a lousy lip-syncronizing and the band looked tired. Remember the "showmaster" basically ran through Stevie to give Christine her bouquet of flowers with a "thank you, madame" that had me LMAO (Thomas Gotttschalk has a thing for "older" females and Chris seemed rather uncomforable with him grinning at her, you should have seen him with Catherine Deneuve in another show, he was basically drooling all the time) and Stevie was somehow suprised at being ignored. Silver Springs was not very memorable that night. I really hope that Stevie had some romantic fun in Germany. Must say that EFO is my favorite Stevie song on SYW.

They appeared on the Wetten Dass program on 1/28/98 and then were at the Brit Awards on 2/9/98. Who knows how long they were there before and after those dates. lol

Great detective work!

Here's a link to a timeline.

LOL! We know that something had to happen between them during the Dance tour. I mean the passion they showed could NOT have been just show. Guess we will never know until she writes that darn memoir that we are all waiting for!!

Wait a second... Lindsey's baby was born in July 1998. I certainly hope for Kristen's sake that there wasn't anything going on between LB & SN when they were in Europe. I just think that when they're on stage their musical "chemistry" is like magic, which I hope never goes away. From all the articles I've read lately, it sounds like they disagree quite a bit off stage.

I agree with you Kathy D, and although it's fun to speculate, I highly doubt anything romantic has gone on between those two for many many years. EFO is most likely about someone else...

While it may have been copyrighted recently, I doubt that it was written recently or about Lindsey.

The music is by Rick Nowels, who I don't think Stevie has collaborated with since the 80s. My guess is that it was written for the RAL album; the music fits in perfectly with that album.

I'm pretty sure that this is an old, old song like RTTG. :)

Stevie and Rick Nowels collaborated on "I Miss You" from TISL. So, she is still working with him. I'm pretty sure EFO (aka In The Darkness) is a new song she wrote in 1999. JMHO

sulamith
05-10-2003, 06:42 PM
Oh, I think it's new, too.
Janna is right, Stevie worked with Rick Nowels in 1999.

And I think there was a period after the Dance where LB wasn't sure what he was going to do.

In his confusion and indecision he could have very well looked to an old friend for comfort.

EFO is a song about hiding in plain sight.

Stevie is pretty sneaky that way, and I love it!

I think it's new, too. EFO is telling the same story as TD and FFG and DR.....and I seriously think she chose SAY for the fact that it seemed to "fit".

And she's admitted that TD and DR are about Lindsey, right?

Yep...she said that flat out in an interview and she has hinted that Say You Will is still bout them, then she said it was sorta bout Christine...but, TD and DR...Lindsey.

sulamith

When she says SYW, the song, is about Christine, maybe she means it is sort of an homage to Chris and her writing style. The song sounds very Christine-ish in it's lyrics and basic melody. I'm thinking the lyrics subject-wise are more about Lindsey, but the style of the song is more about Christine.

Does that make any sense?

You all have read how Stevie cloaks things, and how she keeps journals and pulls ideas out of them. I don't know that the date it was copyrighted necessarily means much. She may have written the actual song recently, but the ideas for the song might be as old as her journals. For example, and I know you don't agree, (I'm not sure I fully agree!) what if part of this song was written about Mick and the affair she had with him long ago? Didn't she recently say something in one of the articles posted on this site something to the effect of- after an after show party, when she and Mick were drunk, that's when their affair began? Late at night, early morning. It might fit:

When love starts out in the darkness
It doesn't do well in the light
Affairs of the heart
That start out in the dark
Usually stay with the night.

They hid their affair. In the darkness, in the light, etc.

And while it certainly seems mean-spirited, every day he calls me
He says he adores me
What can I say?

I think it's possible to spin this song quite a few ways at this point. But "you always know when something's wrong." They BOTH knew this relationship was wrong, and it was doomed, and it would destroy the band, not to mention other relationships.

Just another possible fitting of the pieces of the puzzle.
