View Full Version : Tusk question

Would somebody please explain the album cover?
I'm sure it must have come up in interviews, but I've never seen it explained, & ignorance of this information lessens my confidence in my Mac literacy.

That sure isn't one of Stevie's Yorkies. (Unless the dogs were on coke, too in those days.)

The dog is John's. That's all I can tell you. What does "Tusk" itself mean?!

Anyone know the story?

Mick wrote, if I remember the words, that it is "a jocular term of affection for the male member" and that when Stevie heard it was the name of the album, she "almost quit the band in revulsion."

Don't tell me that you love me, just tell me that you want me.

(I think it's so funny that so many people think the Mac is boring, safe, and clean. Maybe the band should dig out Harold the Dildo for this tour. If Stevie won't dance anymore, at least he can if they stick him back on the drum set.)

Apparently it was a slang term for a certain part of the male anatomy:D

LoL, they might as well have called the album D*ck.

Peter Beard did the photography for Tusk. His main subject at the time was Africa. I think this may have been the time when he was married to Cheryl Tiegs. And yes, I'm sure there was plenty of coke flying around. In the photo shoot video everyone looks to be under the influence of something. Whose house was that photographed at?

If you look closesly, the phone number for the "Village Recorder" studio is in there, too! They must have loved anyone (like me)that was stupid enough to call just to see if it was the real number. I was just lucky it was before caller ID, LOL!

I thought that the dog was Richard Dashut's...and that it was hit by a car not too long after the cover shot was taken.

Actually.. I once spoke to Richard Dashut ... asked him about the cover.. :)

Okay, these posts are all interesting, but I still don't get it. I mean, ahem...I've owned a dog, and I own a penis, and I don't see the connection between the two.

Trying to get the concept. Photo is crooked, angry dog is about to bite leg, dog is white...Nope, nope, just don't get it. Perhaps a song hints to the meaning? (Eureka, could a pet dog and Lindsey's member be equally "real savage-like"? Wondergirl, this calls for your Lindsey expertise! Did your dream reveal all?)

And whose leg is that?

We posted at the same time. This answers the Whose leg? question, and perhaps more. Is the point that both the dog and Lindsey's penis were being teased in the studio? Is this what really pissed you off about the album title, Stevie?

There are lots of pics in there.

The dog is mans best friend, just like his penis.

:)

Seriously...the pics in the album are scary...like the baby with the long horn ( "tusk") between it's legs.

I love the pic of Carol Ann and the words " I walk a thin line" on top....psycho!

:)

Thanks Janet.. that's my first insight into the Tusk LP sleeve photos. I've got the CD but it comes with just 3 or so pictures. I always look for the Tusk LP at market day when there are stalls with boxes of second hand albums.

If you go to any used record store, they usually have a bunch of copies. Also ebay probably sells them for cheap.

Its a must have because it's loaded with pics. Same with the Rumours album and the tourbooks--ebay again.

I remember reading, in Mick's book I think, that Stevie was pissed about the dog on the cover because she had been bitten by a dog that resembled the one on the cover when she was a child. And I don't think she understood the cover, either.

I have pieces of the Tusk record all over my room. It's got all these weird collages...then picks of LIndsey kneeling down like that one of Hendrix with the fire. It's cool.
