... # 8 with 78,000 copies sold.
TISL had a better second week. Oh, well. These days you gotta have a hit, and "Peacekeepr" just doesn't cut it.

Not only a hit, but a decent performance in public. I love them and for the most part the record. But, right or wrong, I really think the combination of the absence of a video, the poorly received by many perfomances on the Today Show and on Leno, and the lackluster chart position of Peacekeeper have hurt.
Note: I love FM and really do not care but it still hurts to see it.
Maybe once the tour starts, things will pick up.

I agree with you. The band really needs something to get the public's attention. IF the info about the dress rehearsal being recorded is accurate, maybe they will find a sort of "video" in that, (in the same way that a couple songs from The Dance were given tv airtime). At least the public will get a chance of seeing a more solid representation of where the band is at this "post Christine time." It's really a shame that the NBC spots didn't come off better than they did. The general public will not cut the band slack the way we fans do (ie, it was too cold, Lindsey thought they were playing Peacekeeper instead of Go Your Own Way, etc). They just need to get ONE solid representation of their work on the air.
I don't know that Peacekeeper hurt, but I've NEVER heard it played at all in my area.
Stevie's Trouble In Shangri La had, what, two videos? At this point in time, the focus is clearly in getting the band ready for the tour, so I don't think there is a prayer of getting a concept video out.
I sure hope there is a release of SOMETHING. Surely the Mac will get another promo spot for the second leg of the tour later this summer. They've got a better shot of strutting their stuff on Letterman. He's always been supportive of the band, and at least takes a few moments to talk to them.

I don't think that there is anything to worry about as far as album sales go...yet. Out of all of the albums that debuted in the top 10, ALL FOUR (Kelly Clarkson, 50 cent, Fleetwood Mac and Darryl Worley) saw a 60% decrease in sales from last week (for 50 cent a 70% decrease). In fact, I read somewhere that in the industry this last week is referred to as "Easter Hangover." So, this really doesn't suprise me. What does suprise me is the 218,000 SYW sold in it's first week. Hopefully now, the album will plateau and have a nice chart run. If it drops to #30 or something next week, I will be among the first to hit the panic button. It also sounds lke this album is easily going to eclipse "The Dance" outside the US. I believe SYW debuted in the top 10 in Canada and is slated to do the same in the UK (think I read that here).
I do also agree with everyone here that the TV appearances of the last week couldn't have done much to promote the new album. Maybe they will do Letterman when they are in NY and redeem themsleves. I'm SURE the will in their live performaces.

there really isn't anything for "us" to worry at all.
We got the album! But yes, a bit of televised PR would definitely be helping.
It's been said Fleetwood Mac has never been "the hardest working band in the world." They could have made a video for this album, they could have done all sorts of things over the years. There's a lot of missed opportunities. (Everytime I log on to The Penguin a pop up shows suggesting we sign the petition for videos. Geeze, do they really need a petition to know the fans would want this?!)
Someone here suggested it was a shame the Rumours line up did so well on that infamous album. They never had to work hard.
If the band/it's promoters want to sell more copies, perhaps they will do more promotions as this puppy moves along. If the tour is the thing the band makes money on, I'm thinking more is forth coming. There's still a lot of seats available at most venues. (Just a hint: don't believe anything you read from Mr. Todd in regards to tickets!)
I personally wish there was a better "show and tell" spot on television, though. I've been talking this band up for years, and really would love a spot showing off this particular lineup of Fleetwood Mac in a better way than we saw the past 2 weeks.

Very good points rianbay. All of last week's big albums sufferred 60-70% drops. It was # 8 for the week. Still sold about 80,000 copies which brings the two week total to 300,000. The Dance suffered a 50% drop in week 2 and has gone on to sell 5 million plus copies. The bottom line is we have the album and those who want them have their concert tickets.
Sometimes we becomes obsessed with sales as if it is justifaction for own likes and dislikes. I will remind all that Time sold 25,000 copies. Many here like it. Out of the Cradle, one of MY top 3 albums of all time sold 300,000. My point: Fleetwood Mac has already proven they will continue to be a viable commercial entity. The good news in that, is this means we will continue to get new music from them if they choose to do so.

Thanks, John, I was wondering how The Dance did in it's second week when i wrote my last post...now I know. I knew it dropped from #1 but wasn't sure about the numbers as far a sales went.

Jeeeesus, people! I can't go to a newsstand without seeing Lindsey's mug on the cover, or at least inside a magazine, in the last month. The band has been on Dateline, Today and Leno. There was this huge promotion on the web.
Surely, you don't think there hasn't been enough marketing.
So what if their performances weren't great on TV? I remember seeing the Smashing Pumpkins blow it at the MTV Video Music Awards and go on to sell millions and millions.
If this album doesn't sell, it will be rather ironic, don't you think? I mean Lindsey effectively declares he is ending his solo career. He makes concessions to the rest of the band and the label. There's a huge promotional effort, in which the label refuses to acknowledge the existence of two studio albums since Tango.
Maybe people just don't like the album.

Warner's has done great promotion for it. They have put a great deal of effort into marketing this album. Some may complain about the tatics, but no one can say this album is not being promoted in the US and it IS selling.
Warner's had expected about a debut week of 150,000 and got 70,000 more than that. A drop off of 50% + is to be expected after a debut/holiday week combo. They need about 400,000 copies sold to break even on the album.

I agree I think Warner's has done a good job in promoting the Mac as we have seen the past few weeks with songs in several different sitcom's, live performances and interviews and the magazine stories. I just think that they could have picked much better songs then SYW and Peacekeeper as the first songs out.
I kind of think Thrown Down reminds me of Gypsy in a bit with the music and the flow of the song. I think that one would do good radio wise. As for a Lindsey song...humm....the one I would choose..i am not sure it would do good on radio. I really like the guitar licks in Come. Very rowdy Lindsey! ;) I also love say Goodbye. It would be great on easy listening or top 40 I think.
Oh well. Guess we will have to see what comes up next.
At least their sales will increase a little more as I am out to buy my second copy as the first one got the crap beat out of it. I think the sales will improve after the concerts start I hope.

78,000 the 2nd week isn't bad at all, especially considering that the first week, many of us bought multiple copies of those 218,000 sold.

The album, it appears, already IS selling.
What would be ironic about that? You mean as far as Warner/Reprise is concerned? Or the whole project in general?
Are you hoping the album doesn't keep selling well? Not trying to sound "on the attack." Just not sure I'm following what you are trying to say.

I frankly don't care if it sells. I bought it. I like it. That's enough for me. I don't dial around the radio to catch Peacekeeper and I don't care if they make a video.
My point was that it would be ironic if the album sells poorly after Lindsey made all those concessions because he wanted to work on an album that sells, as opposed to another Out of the Cradle commercial flop.

I bought it. I like it....and that's not enough for me. I want this album to be a big commercial success! I want Fleetwood Mac to reclaim the rock and roll throne and sell millions of records. I must say I am very dismayed at seeing Kelly Clarkson beat out FM in the charts. Can you believe that? And 50 cent??? What or who is that?! I can never figure out the public's musical tastes. I wish they all would get with the program! Bill

Gotta look to see whose albums were released that second week. Ummm, well, first off....MADONNA. So, there's a chink out of the SYW sales figures...who else? (you do the homework)
I think you'll see a bump in sales again once the tour starts, and when they get to the "big market" areas (namely NY, Chi, LA, Atl).
After the initial hit, then drop-off, as the summer progresses, I think there'll be a slow rise in the numbers. Especially, if the title track gets released as a single and gets much more significant airplay than "Peacekeeper" has been getting. I think the title track will be the "song of the summer". (Much like "Dreams" was in 1977).

I bought my pre-order through the mail, but decided to go for the limited edition today! :) So maybe there's a little of that still residually...

Uh Say You Will, The "SONG OF THE SUMMER" I hope you're right, and since you usually are right about things, maybe this is true. But i would be VERY shocked, if Say You Will becomes the new Dreams.

First of all, 87,000 copies says billboard.com. Second, at least it's now beating that stupid 50 Cent album that only had three new songs on it. It fell to #10. UNfortunately, his OTHER album climbed back up to #2. I really don't get it, what's so great about this guy? He's just a carbon copy of other rappers who've already come and gone (not ALL rappers, but some).

I checked Canoe for Canadian chart details. They only have the Top 10 albums in Canada up, and SYW isn't one of them.

I know - I like some rap, but really do not get into it too much. But, rap music is where it is sales wise, and, it has been there for about eight or more years. Interestingly, my 15 year old caucasian step neice who goes to a strict Catholic school and all of her friends love rap music and have all of the records. So, the appeal of rap is apparently very broad and not in any way limited to its original African American audience. I think this is a good thing in that two formerly separate cultures are coming together. But, for me, it is very hard to get over the violence in some but certainly not all of the lyrics in the rap songs I have heard and the violence in general associated with rap stars (Sean Combs, Tupac, Run D.M.C., etc.). It will be interesting to see how long rap's staying power holds; its commercial viability certainly outlasted the grunge movement, the boy band movement, and the rest of the periodic movements of the 1990's.
I think it therefore more impressive that FM debuted where they did and that the VBOFM has sold over a million copies. Way tofo FM!!!!
Note: I am not slamming rap - I am just making an observation. If you are really into it - great for you and more power to you

Our local arts and entertainment weekly, THE GEORGIA STRAIGHT, lists SYW at #13 for Vancouver album sales, down from #11 last week.
Incidentally, 50 Cent is at #5, where it was last week. Madonna, of course, is #1 here.
