View Full Version : Tonight Show Sound/Mixing Problem

I thought the performance was terrible. I think part of the problem is coming from a sound or mixing problem. I am no music expert but since this is the second time it's happened and it's the second live performance outside of a soundstage, I keep hearing mixing or sound problems. There are times where Stevie's voice is present on a harmony and other times it seems to not be there even though I can see her singing. Same thing on the Today show on some of Lindsey's parts on Stevie's songs. There are times I"m watching their lips moving, but can barely hear their voice.

I've watched the AOL Sessions performance of Peacekeeper which is Live, the sound was from a pair of above average computer speakers and it sounded 1000X better than it did on the Today or Tonight show performances. I reallly don't think ALL of the problem is coming from this song being performed live.
I also noticed other weird sounds that seemed to get louder and interfere with the vocals at times and then fade away, which is why I mentioned a mixing problem.

I wonder if anyone here who has experience with this can comment what this might be coming from. I have listened to bad bootlegs of 25 yr old live FM concerts re-taped hundreds of times, that sound better and more even than the past 2 performances on these shows.

IMO there is something wrong with the sound and I hope someone who is close to the band and looking out for them has enough balls to tell them they sound like crap. Sorry, but IMO that is the way they sound at times. I can live with lackluster Stevie vocals in a 2 note range and Lindsey's live performances can be a far cry from what he sounds like in a studio recording ( I personally like those quirky things) but this seems to be a bigger problem that might be something they're not aware of.

Let's face it, if we're the devoted fans who will listen to almost anything they do and barely find fault with it, we have to admit that to the average listener, this had to have sounded bad. Many of us heard comments from friends about the Today show performance, I've always heard postive things from friends about their live performances, never comments like we're hearing now.

Jay's show was so bad last night that I'd be surprised if many people were able to wait for FM, I almost didn't.
I keep getting busy screens when I sign in here so I might not be able to respond to any posts. I am able to reach the site when I'm logged out so I'll check back and read any responses.

Kudos! My thoughts exactly. :) Peackeeper was great on the AOL sessions (Stevie sounded particularly good), but lately,it's awful. I might well be the sound, but I'm wary to believe it. How could that be the case with TWO performances on different shows? Oh well, we'll find out tonight!

That could also be post production work on the AOL sessions, which is not really possible in a live performance. But I agree, its like they are confused between wanting a glossy smooth performance in perfect harmony and a racous rock and roll show.

Considering the way they sound live lately without any studio work, it most definitely IS post production!

Let's just say I've seen at least 20 different singers/bands perform on Jay Leno and all of them sounded HORRIBLE in my opinion... I think there is something seriously wrong with the sound system on that show

But yes, lately FM has not been sounding good live, I agree sadly :(
