Does it irritate anyone else that the first drum beat in Bleed to Love Her is just slightly late? For me, it completely takes me out of the song.

Nope...in several interviews Lindsey has mentioned that Mick's style is slightly behind the beat...which I've always thought was odd...considering drums KEEP The beat...but whatever...I think it works in the song...they would not have kept it in if there was just no reason for it....

There's a difference between slightly behind the beat and plain late.

It's really jarring in the context of Lindsey's very exact acoustic playing in that tune. Not to mention, we all have the memory of the correct drum intro on The Dance's version.

The "correct" drum intro? Okay, the Dance was a live recording, live recordings by definition are different from studio recordings. From a musician standpoint...this is not a huge issue in the song for me....that's all I am saying....in fact I have no problems with any of the songs on the cd....they all rock! imo.

Yes, it does irritate me also, Matt.
I use to adore all the weird ideas by Lindsey but this one is totally unnecessary to such a beautiful one like Bleed.. It does not contribute to the song at all, only disturbs. This song anyway should not be in SYW, everyone will agree that the version is far inferior to The Dance's one.

That's interesting that he would like the studio version better. I mean, I enjoy how pristine the acoustic guitar sounds, but it seems to have lost some of its organic feel that the live version had.

It's a strange and sort of unusual phenomen to learn a song from its live version first.

OK, everyone BUT Lindsey will agree that the version is far inferior to The Dance's one.

Don't get me wrong, I love the DANCE version probably a little better because it came first. However, I think the new version is killer. The last minute of the song after the vocal ends is beautiful. I love it.

I know some people believe that Bleed to Love Her should not be on Say You Will, but to keep the new album within the context of the FM story, it needs to be there. After all, it was Lindsey working on the song which convinced him to bring in Mick and John which got the whole Dance reunion ball rolling. So as far as the history goes, the studio version of Bleed to Love Her has a very important place on this album.

For me, having more than one version of any FM song be it live, demo, alternate mix and final album version is always fun. I love to hear the differences...even mistakes. Take the the Dances' NJ live concert version of Silver Springs... is more special because since Stevie apparently broke down emotionally, Lindsey sings the final verse. It's one of my favorites...

Oh Bella--I was there when Stevie lost it during Silver Springs.

I can't remember fully, because it's been some time, but I know it was just a magical time, that entire tour, and it was the second to last show. He finished it for her--I didn't think she was upset but again, I can't remember totally, and there has been NO VIDEOS found of it!

Nothing can beat that!! But nothing can beat the Dance tour imo, I know already before ONE SHOW that the SYW tour won't beat the Dance...or the music, the mood.

Bleed to Love Her, I have to listen to that yet. I just got the limited cd today and I am getting ready now to listen to it in a dark room while I drink some white wine.

I love the song and one of the things I like about Mick's drumming is he plays behind the beat. The studio version sounds great to me.

How could he not be anything less than thrilled over how the Dance version came out?! It was SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.
I love both versions, and was not bothered by the late beat...until I read this thread.

Whilst I don't necessarily have a problem with the late beat, I do not care for the sound of the drums on the studio version - they are so tinny and at odds with the rest of the song. I'm also disappointed that Stevie's vocals have been mixed so low but I imagine the purpose of this was to showcase Christine's contribution. Oh and I also hate Lindsey's echo of "take my breath away" during the second verse - it's just awful.
I guess the only part of this version I like is the extended instrumental ending but then we already had this on the GOS version. As this recording dates back to 1996, I consider it an inappropriate choice for inclusion, particularly when the likes of "Down On Rodeo" and "Wait For You" were sacrificed. Don't misunderstand me, I do adore this song but definitely prefer the live version and just wish it had remained as that.

Okay...the beat is not even noticably late! Give me a break....I've clapped to the time, Counted, tapped my foot, and flat out directed to it....the reason it may sound really late is the trippy little drum effect Linds has got going on through the song....it's very odd....but cool as heck! I love the song! I can't say that I like it more than the live version...but I think both are fantastic!

On a side note...Christine is on SYHA. The "Ohhh Oooohs" are her! And they seem to be louder than the other versions. She alsys drops a "steal your hear away" line on her own.

Phil, what is this song, Wait For You? I've never heard of it...a Lindsey song?!?! Do tell!!

Hi there Christy! "Wait For You" is the official title of "Shuffle Riff" aka "Hit & Run". I have mentioned this previously but it seemed to cause some disagreement among Ledgies so I let it go but I can assure you this information is factual.
My favourite GOS songs were "Murrow", "Down On Rodeo" and "Wait For You" so I was truly hanging out for all three to be included on SYW. I knew "Murrow" wouldn't be altered but I could really imagine Stevie harmonising on the latter two. Maybe these songs will make it onto the follow up?

Hello all---

I totally agree about Mick's slightly late drum fill/intro. I noticed it the very first time I heard the "leaked" version from GIFT OF SCREWS. I was shocked that Lindsey would leave it like that.

In musician circles, Mick is indeed known as a drummer who plays behind the beat. This method of playing sort of creates a slightly drawn-out dip on the 1 and 3 of each measure. It's hard to explain... but, anyway, the first fill on BTLH is not just behind the beat, it's OFF the beat. Argh.

And while we're talking about the drums on BTLH, the snare sound totally ruins the song for me. It's that huge, treated, '80s-style snare that would have been okay on Tango. But on an acoustic-driven, organic-sounding song like BTLH, it just doesn't fit. One of Lindsey's few mis-steps in recording/producing SAY YOU WILL.

I actually went slightly into my love for this song in the LB forum, but I'll reiterate.

This song is the song that made me want to love this band. It is what caught my attention when The Dance was on MTV. I am so happy that it is on this album, and I really enjoy the way it is presented. I don't have a trained ear, but I don't have any problems with the beat. I love the way Lindsey echoes certain lyrics. I LOVE the guitar ending. I really have this song to thank for my appreciation for this band, because I'm not sure I'd ever have put forth the effort to find out more about them without it. Call me cheesy.

And personally, I don't see how this tour can be as good as The Dance without Christine! But I'm sure that's been discussed far and wide already. I love that this song is on the album if just to have her voice on there!

I betcha Buckingham thinks that the kick-in off the beat is quirky enough to confound the listener's expectations a little, & he probably likes that idea. It's a little stumble that sets the song outside the clean, clinical realm of "perfect," where all is solid armor. The late kick-in is a little chink in that armor, like a cleft in a chin that adds character to a face.

I tend to think otherwise. It's completely vintage Lindsey. That huge sound started back in Tusk, traveled through his solo albums (especially OOTC), and doesn't seem dated in the least in my opinion.

P.S. The late beat really never got to me.
