Lindsey sounded pretty bad singing Go Your Own Way.
This was actually my first time hearing peacekeeper, and i must say i like it. (except for that "this is not a drill").
Stevie still sounds great

GYOW was preeeeeeetty bad........
I am hoping it was the cold!
PK was really good as was Rhiannon, but I wanted to hear Destiny Rules and Say You Will...
I think SAY is coming up soon, but I have to leave for work! Doggone it!

My cable was out (of course) so I couldn't see it. How big was the crowd?
they started kinda off key, but warmed up fast. the crowd was pretty good size. lots of poeple with Stevie pics and FM banners.
lucky dogs.

Stevie's pretty bundled up, isn't she? LOL
I did see Mindy & Sharon, but Sharon's still so thin that Lindsey's head kept blocking almost every camera shot of her!
John was his usual uncomfortable-in-front-of-the-mike self when Matt cornered him with a question.
I think the cold affected their voices. Stevie sounded great on Rhiannon except for that last word, "HER," when her voiced cracked a bit. I'm sure it's the cold - she's hit that note a thousand times before.
I hope it was Today show time constraints that made them eliminate the guitar solos on Peacekeeper & Rhiannon. I hope the guitar parts aren't omitted during the tour.
Waiting now for the 4th song...

Yeah it was pretty offkey but look at that wind... geez... I can imagine the cold would mess up the tuning of the guitars. and they looked bored in GYOW/Rhiannon (besides Mick but when does he ever) but I don't blame them playing the same songs 10 million times.
Stevie's huge scarf was cute, lol.

Yeah.. GYOW wasn't good. I'm sure it was the cold.
He even screwed up a little with the guitar intro.. cold weather does *INTERESTING* things to instruments, for sure.
Is it just me.. or did he say:
"If I could, maybe I'd give you my world
Open I if you won't take it from me.."
I swear he did. I SWEAR it. Like he was going to the -open up everything's waiting for you- and then thought, "DOH! Wrong part!"
Say You Will, Peacekeeper, and Rhiannon sounded pretty damn good though.

That's what I heard, too. Wouldn't be the first time they did the old accidental verse switcheroo on a song. lol

there's no way you'd be referring to the fact that it is *impossible* to sing along with Rhiannon when it's done live.. would you???

They did Say You Will at the end of the show. It was about an hour after they finished Rhiannon. It sounded great.I was so glad they did a second song off of the new album.I got it on tape. They also showed the 4 of them signing some autograghs after Rhiannon and S&L getting a picture taken together with a fan.I am so ready to see them live this summer!!!

Yeah, I enjoyed SYW, love the live ending.
I know Today is targeting the mainstream & not necessarily Ledgie fanatics, but I hope the backstage glimpses part of the program is not an indication of the tour. The featured songs they practiced were Landslide, GYOW, Tusk, The Chain (did I also hear acoustic Big love?).....recognizable, for sure, but not the most exciting set list for those of us who have seen them before. I hope the rumors of Beautiful Child and Storms are true.
Hey, I wish I would have thought to tell Livia to ask LB which Christine songs they'd be doing on this tour --- now THOSE would have been a real backstage peek for the Today Show to broadcast!

1st half of Go Your Own Way was not good. Think of an athlete having to perform without much warm up in 30 degree weather. Voice was off and hands were cold making those fine motor skills a little less fine. From half way through Go Your Way to the end they sounded good.

Lindsey and Mick stunk it up, but Stevie and John held their own.
Well it started a little bit shaky with GYOW. Lindsey definitely sang off key and overall I thought it was pretty wretched. He sounded much better on "Peacekeeper". I don't know, I think maybe he calmed down some or "warmed up" once he got the first one done.
Stevie looked great(like a million bucks) :) and sounded even better. From "Rhiannon" to "Say You Will" the woman is still cranking out stellar songs and performing them well too.

GYOW started off a lil bad, but it got better. I was surprised to see Stevie bundled like it was snowing and Lindsey wearing his thin nothing leather jacket!! LOL He must like the cold.
I was bored during Rhiannon and GYOW tho...I liked PK and SYW tho!! I'm SOOOOOOOO sick of the oldies!! This new album is so funky and fresh, it ROCKS and I'm praying to GOD they TEAR IT UP in concert!! They HAVE to do Everybody Finds Out..or I'll DIE, this is BEGGING to be done in concert!! KICK IT STEVIE!!
Rhiannon needs to fly away to the sky and GYOW needs to Go his Own Way. LMAO!! *yawn* Sorry, folks, but I'm excited about this new album!!!!!! EEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

"Rhiannon" was just AWFUL!!!! Did anyone notice that Stevie is now singing an even LOWER note on the chorus?!?! They really need to stop playing this song, as she obviously cannot do it justice.
"Say You Will" was great! The ending was very cool. I wish they would have used all of the Today show for all new stuff. Lindsey could have picked ANY of his SYW songs (even "Murrow...") and it would have been better than "Go Your Own Way". Ditto with Stevie. I would have rather heard "Silver Girl" than that stinky performance of "Rhiannon" any day...
From all the publicity they've done so far it looks like the following oldies will be on the tour:
Tusk
Rhiannon
Go Your Own Way
Landslide
The Chain
UGH! Too bad. "The Chain" without Christine?!?!?!?! Oh well.....

I *SO* agree with you. This new album ROCKS. They best be playin' some Everybody Finds Out and Smile At You or i'm gonna like, die, which would mean that two people will die at their concerts....lol. As much as I love the old stuff I'd much rather hear some stuff they usually don't do live and the material from the new album. I do hope Lindsey rocks out with some Big Love and Go Insane. That will make me happy :-) However, I think the reason why they do the old stuff is to please those fans who grew up listening to it. I just hope they do a nice mix of songs and include a lot of this new album.....things off this album i'm really not interested in hearing live....Silver Girl and Running Through the Garden (i only like the ending of RTTG). Anyway, i'm w/ya Wonder!!!

I wish we could somehow get the word to them that we want to hear the NEW stuff!
I didn't get to see SYW this morning because I had to leave, but I did see GYOW and PK and Rhiannon. I don't expect much from Rhiannon anymore. That song has been a shell of it's former self for quite a long time.
They sounded so much better on the two new songs than the two old ones, so that really tells them something.
I liked that some people there had posters there with "Peacekeeper" on it and stuff, not just old stuff.
We want the new stuff!

Speaking of new stuff....I wonder if we'll get to see Stevie in pants this tour...lol...I actually dig the black pants with the shoes she has on in The Making of SYW. New album...new look? Glad she lost the frizzy hair this morning. Combined with the wind and the general cold that was happening this morning up here, she could have housed some birds in that. I wonder if her hair dresser read these boards?!? LOL

She might as well not sing it anymore b/c it is quite...bad now.:distress:
Hi All,
I would like to add that if any of you here who are performers have ever played outside when it's freezing cold (I have) it really does do some weird things to guitars, vocal chords, drum heads, basses, etc. and, just tweaks with the general sound of things. When it's warmer, soundwaves move through the air differently than cold weather - it can be a bit disorienting to settle in to.
I think the clam at the beginning of GYOW was due to Lindsey's fingers not doing what his brain was telling them to as quickly as they normally would have because of the cold.
There are streamable clips of each song on www.msnbc.com . . .
Also LOVED the live ending of SYW.
For you guitar players out there, I thought SYW would have been even better if Lindsey had capo'd on the first fret, and used the suspended "e" string on top to ring through the entire chorus as the chords continue up that scale. Makes it even "chimeier" - try it!

I saw it on the internet. Well yes the sound quality of internet video files is of course not good and it was cold and all- but whatever the reason was: Lindsey sounded awful imo. He even did not try to do GYOW in the high chorus notes. But even the lowdown version did not fit. His harmonies on SYW dito and Peacekeeper... Well I would say that was not his day. Stevies singing was fine imo, I liked her performance.
I hope they do better on the tour and we get to see a video from that too! But from this one I am disappointed.
P.S. Hey CZ just read your post. Hope you're right and it was just the cold weather!

Speaking of Stevie, why was she pulling a Michael Jackson with the one glove deal?:D And she was really bundled up eh?! She must have been wearing quite a lot under that coat because it mader her look a bit..big:laugh: I loved it though, Stevie always puts a smile on my face.

Oh, God, I hope not! Jake, are you talking about the Dateline interview and the clips from earlier this week? I don't remember seeing or hearing Big Love, but they better leave that out this time. With Red Rover and Say Goodbye and possibly Love Minus Zero, hes' got no reason to do the same tired retread of Big Love/Go Insane. Ugh. I'll be really disappointed if he does that again.
As for the Today show - they seemed to enjoy playing the newer songs better than the old ones. I think SYW was the best song they performed today. I agree that they seemed very bored with Rhiannon. They need to liven it up or drop it. I'd rather see something with some energy behind it. GYOW wasn't great, but I agree that the unexpected cold was a factor. The wind looked to be blowing straight at them when they started singing.
And I agree, Stevie looked great! Much better than she did on the earlier interviews this week. And she looked so happy!

wow, lol, GYOW was awful!! lindsey wasn't really sounding his best today....i'm hoping it's because of the early morning/cold combo. i liked Peacekeeper, and Rhiannon was ok. i just wish she would get a little more into it! and of course, i had to leave before SYW, so i didn't get to hear it!and i just *knew* that's the song they were going to play; i really wanted to hear it!! lmao, Stevie's huge scarf was funny!! she always makes me laugh.

Just seen the performances... Go Your Own Way got good in the second half, they seemed more into it than they did Rhiannon. Unless they're going to tear Rhiannon up like back in the old days, I see no reason for it sticking around.
Say You Will was the best, definitely... Peacekeeper just seems dead to me. Not a great live song.
The weather, the crowd noise, adjustments needing to be made no doubt contributed to the slight hiccups, but the energy seemed there in the latter part of Go Your Own Way and Say You Will. The ending of Say You Will was nice.

Speaking as someone who was actually there this morning, the sound quality was much better in person. When I got home and watched the tape of it.. the sound was definitely off. Maybe it was the way it transfered or something. GYOW was definitely off key, but the rest of the songs sounded great! Stevie looked bundled up like there was a snow storm because it was freezing here this morning. The temp was like 36 degrees. Watching Lindsey just in that little leather jacket and Mick with absolutely no coat or jacket made me freeze my butt off more...lol. I think they did a great job. The soundcheck was awesome too! I also think that they should definitely do a few more newer songs on this tour.

I'll be completely honest. i was actually there in person this morning and I am shocked about what you are all saying about Lindsey. He didn't sound like he was off a lick to me. Same with Stevie, but Lindsey was better. And the crowd was certainly loving it. We actually saw them perform the songs twice (three times for Peacekeeper) and they sounded great in person. I haven't seen any recording of it yet though. So I'm really at a loss to explain why it sounded bad on television

Yep, yep, yep.......
I played a Halloween show a couple of years ago (outdoors at night) and it was about 20 degrees F outside.... UGH!!!!! The guitars kept going out of tune and the shivering totally affects your vocal chords.
I originally thought FM was gonna play in the studio. I was really surprised to see them out in the freezing cold. I was in New York a coupla weeks ago and it was COLD!!! This coming from a SoCal baby.
Even though "Rhiannon" and "GYW" were not that great, you've gotta give 'em credit for continuing to produce music, support it, and do all the promotional **** (like "Today") that comes along. I would have to guess that this type of performance is EXACTLY why Christine said "Forget it, man!!".

They can scrap Dreams and Rhiannon for this tour, but I will NOT be a happy camper if I don't get to see FM do GYOW live this time.
I'm sorry, but that is a STAPLE. FM without GYOW is like.. tea without sugar.. it simply must NOT be done!

p.s. GYOW is my favorite song *of all time* .. so i might be a bit biased.

I think Stevie has one glove off may be because that's the hand she uses to adjust that electronic earpiece thing you guys were talking about earlier.
It probably has just a little dial kind of thing and that would be pretty hard to operate with leather gloves on.
Maybe?

You have NO IDEA just how cold it was this morning. It was only in the 30s and the wind was nasty.
They rehearsed at 6:30 EST and only came out before the performance that was televised to do one last soundcheck about 5 minutes before you saw them.
I was standing to the side of the stage behind them and Lindsey knew they started GYOW off wrong but he sort of made a cute little "what the hell was that?" type of face and went on with it and I think it was just fine after that.
The fact that this was supposed to kick off a "summer" concert series--which is a dopey premise since April in NYC is a total crapshoot weather wise (it was 80 degrees on Wednesday and in the low 30s today)--and FM had to come out in their woolies (or not, in Lindsey's case) was pretty brave.
And I like the fact that they all were smiling and looking happy.

I just got back from Holland and my timing is off. I totally missed TODAY and I want to shoot myself in the head.
Anyone have pics of it or anything??
Someone should make a tape of all the performances and interviews and sell them for like $5 a pop, I'd buy it. I'm missing alot. I caught Dateline totally by accident but I can't work my stupid VCR.
I live like an hour away from NYC but it was FREEZING here in NJ, I can imagine how cold they were.
I wish I just went up there ...
Oh well, thanks for the reviews and again, I'll pay $5 and postage if anyone is willing!

My father in law called me from California and was absolutely shocked I didn't drag the kids out for this!
I did love watching it on TV (it was alot warmer in the house!) The cameras showed this young girl - in her teens, it looked like - singing every word to each song, which I thought was cool. Stevie especially looked unbelievably happy, and SYW was awesome.
I canNOT wait until 5/25 (Continental), where we scored 13th row center seats! :D

Well, I guess I'm one of the few that actually liked their performances. I didn't think they sounded too bad. Hell, they could have sounded a hell of a lot worse! :)
Lindsey is still such a sexy beast! I can't get over just how much I completely adore that man!
Stevie was extra adorable this morning wasn't she? Something about her looked younger too me. I don't know if it's the hair or what. But something about they way she looks recently makes her look hauntingly like her younger years. Anyone else notice this? Oh, I hope that they really did sound better in person! I was shocked at how bad Lindsey sounded - especially during GYOW. My boyfriend, who also likes their music, walked in during GYOW and said, "OH my God, he has lost his voice!". It just doesn't seem to have the same depth (at least on TV). My concern is that he really didn't sound too hot IMO on GYOW from The Dance, either.
It's not that I don't expect their voice to change, after all, they have been doing this forever, but I compare his voice to Stevie's, and it just seems like hers is BETTER than it used to be (say, in the mid to late 80's). I can only guess at what it must feel like for him if he is losing his voice at bit. For such an artist and perfectionist, that must be really, really hard.

04-19-2003, 12:14 PM
They did start off kind of.......well, off! But the performance certainly picked up. I chalked the bad parts up to the fact that the temp. was in the 30's and the wind was blowing like you wouldn't believe, and also that it was early in the morning........I actually felt really bad for them watching that show. I know I wouldn't have wanted to be out there performing, freezing my rear off. I think with all that taken into consideration, they looked and sounded really great, for the circumstances!! Say You Will was definitely the BEST, loved the ending too....right on!!! Peacekeeper was good.....a little tame though.
I too think Rhiannon should be laid to rest. I cannot give up Dreams or Go Your Own Way, though.....they have to be in the set list!
I enjoyed seeing them perform and enjoyed the interviews. It was kinda funny watching Stevie, all bundled up, like there was a foot of snow on the ground, answering Matt Lauer like "oh no, this is great, it's so hot back in L.A., I love this weather." LMAO!! Not exactly the greatest of conditions there for an outdoor concert in a SUMMER Concert Series! And John: Uh, I'm not really on camera am I? Get that microphone awaaaay!! Hehehehe. That was so cool when the Today Show came back on and they showed all four of them still outside, talking to fans, shaking hands, SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS & TAKING PICTURES!! How gracious and wonderful. Those folks that were there are sure lucky! I was ecstatic to see the large amount of people there.....and all the signs.....loved it when they kept showing the crowds on camera!!
Ok, I'm gonna go watch this again!!!!

I was able to watch the show at work, as I work in a doctor's office and the doctor on was pretty cool about it:nod:
I was surprised to see them do four songs. At first I was surprised that "Peace Keeper " was the second song as I thought that would be it and as much as I love LB, I was taking Stevie's side well what about her songs. So it was a nice even split. I loved the new songs, they sounded great. It was the older songs that sounded kind of off. Even my boss said Go Your Own Way was horrible. I hope it translate better indoors

Oh...well I don't know about everyone else, but I feel so much better after reading this. :) I was hoping that it was just the cold weather. I guess it took a while for Lindsey to compensate, with the chill factor and all. GYOW certainly started off on the wrong foot, and it sounded like they were totally off key up until a certain point of the song.
Thanks for clarifying this! It's good to see ya back. :)

No question, the cold affected the performance. I was in near disbelief when Lindsey started playing, and then his voice sounded very strained.
Hey, that's the breaks. So they had an off day. The band got progressively better with each song. If they had played a whole show, by the sixth or seventh song, they would have hit their stride. And that's not unusual. The cold just made it worse.
My main issue: Just what was Stevie thinking when she decided to put on a fur coat to appear on national TV? Talk about a faux pas. I hope it was fake fur.

Yep...been there done that! I played a suped-up version of Van Halen's Eruption to close a huge gig back in December. I was standing on the roof of my college library and it was about minus 2 degrees C. Absolutely FREEZING!!! My guitar went completely out of tune when I took it from inside (where i was waiting) to outside because of the effect of the cold and I had to quickly retune it. However with the cold it was impossible to get it into perfect tune. The other huge problem was that in order to keep my fingers moving (I only fingerpick) I had to hold them in front of the floodlights (almost blinded myself while I was doing this!) until I was about to go on. As I was playing I realised that I had to actually concentrate hard to keep my fingers moving and doing what I want them to do.
It feels as though someone's injected your hand with local anaesthetic and it's quickly kicking in. I'm sure it's tough for a guitarist who plays with a pick but for a fingerpicker it's an absolute nightmare. (Luckily I managed to pull off a pretty decent performance, if i may say so, hehee!:D)
Under the circumstances I thought ALL of them, not just Lindsey, did an incredibly amazing job!!! 7 AM.....freezing cold.......!! The cold had obviously affected LB's guitar playing and vocals, and yet I still thought that performance was better than many many bands who play live under perfect conditions and with a gazillion pieces of "help-software". Anyway, the crowd looked like they were loving it!! I doubt anyone who was there even noticed/cared about that tiny slip at the beginning of GYOW, and after the first verse it was all cool.
:wavey::wavey: :wavey:
Yeah, I think we have to put it in this perspective in regards to the slip-ups yesterday...it's live music folks. It's NOT going to be perfect. That's what I find great about live music and about bands like the Mac. You just never know what the hell is going to happen when they come on stage. And while GYOW was a bit rough (okay, it was just sloppy to start), by the time the last verse and solo came around, they were back in top shape. If I remember correctly, this was Fleetwood Mac's first public performance since early '98? Let's just chalk it all up to the weather, and it being the first concert in a long while...and look forward to the tour!
First of all, I was very happy just to see them all perform together again (of course except for Christine). They all looked good & cold, especially Stevie. I know it's been really cold here where I live & it's really hard to do anything in the cold, let alone play an instrument or sing. I saw them live, & I just watched the tape again.
GYOW - Lindsey sounded pitchy (I know, too much American Idol). I'm not an expert, but I was in the band in school, & this song just sounded out of tune to me in the beginning, but I thought it rocked at the end. Please, they have to play this song on their tour. I love it, though I don't think Stevie likes it too much. And I was wondering when Stevie was going to play her tambourine. Who were the two guys in the back playing guitars? Who is the keyboard player?
Peacekeeper - Lindsey sounded better. The whole song was excellent. He was looking into the crowd more. Who was the blonde haired women in the front? Was that Kristen? I know they will play this on tour.
Rhiannon - Though I like other songs of Stevie's better, I still like this song. A so-so performance. Stevie looked into it. She was smiling more. I think I'd still like them to do this song on tour.
They signed autographs after this. Some people got their pictures taken with them. (I am so jealous.) That's nice that they did this.
Say You Will - Ah, very nice. Lindsey & Stevie looked at each other more. They looked very into the song. Done very nicely. I'm sure they will sing this on tour.
All in all a good performance. So happy to see such a big crowd there for them. I hope they know just how much their fans appreciate them.

They looked totally like they werwe freezing. I thought Rhiannon was not bad and in fact good - I like the seemingly quickened pace. Yes, it seems LB needs to go in for a litle vocal warm up with Stevie.

The bad part is, the average music listener won't put up with excuses or cut them a break because of bad weather or anything else. I'm afraid FM is already being judged harshly by a lot of people who saw the Today show. Friends of mine who saw it said "they've lost it." We can be generous because we love the band, no matter what. The average fan won't be that kind.

That's the point me and strandinthewind were trying to make in the other thread, but is was somehow missed!
Thanks, Miranda!
Believe me, I will cut them tons of braks because I love them and know how talented they are, but the average person does not!
I'n our instant gratification world, unfortunatley, as WRONG as it is, a few bad opening notes can mean a great deal, esp. on a national show like that.
I hate it, but it's true.
