View Full Version : MSCAE in "Murrow" lyrics?
Anyone know what MSCAE stands for? I just did a quick look up on the Net and I didn't turn up anything that seemed likely.

Leslie, been wondering about that myself. Will do some research tomorrow.
Maybe he made it up.

I was wondering the SAME THING last night when I read the lyrics on the FM.com site. I thought the word he was saying was emaciate, but does that even make sense? LOL

It's funny you asked, Les, because one of the things I wanted to make it a point to do tonight, was to post and ask if anyone knew what those initials stood for.
Of course I felt kind of dumb that I was having to ask, because i was convinced that I would be about the only one who didn't get the acronym.
I don't feel so bad now though, seeing that this has us *all* scratching our heads!

Just guessing...and I know this is a long shot.
Could CAE stand for computer aided engineering? If this song has anything to do with the media, then it's quite possible.
MS could stand for Microsoft, which has merged with just about everything.
I don't know. Could it be a reference to the computer generated graphics that they use in televised media?
On second thought, it could have something to do with weapons and how they're made. If you do a search using "weapons" and "CAE", you'll come up with all kinds of stuff.

Well, at first I thought maybe the MSC part is The Manufacturing Sciences Corporation, who, amongst other things, make and use weapons-grade uranium. But then the "A" and "E" would be a mystery.
I actually don't think MSCAE stands for any company name or anything like that, because whatever it is, it's related to "weapons", "prisons" and "justice", and I can't think of any company or corporation that would be related to all three, let alone whose initials are MSCAE. So I reckon it's either the first letters of the names of some senators or other American officials, or the first letters of different companies, or I could be completely wrong!:D
I hope he let's us know in his interview tomorrow, or at least eventually...!

Hehe...or it could be just something that he completely made up.
I agree that the letters probably have nothing to do with a specific company. If the question doesn't come up tomorrow, we'll have another shot during the live chat interview at MSNBC on Friday.

MSC as in the "Murrow School of Communication" which is a liberal ARTS (Possibly the "A" part) school at the university of Washington State?

Now THAT is a very interesting... and plausible... possibility, Brian!
Perhaps Lindsey took it a step further... the Murrow School of Communication, Art & Entertainment, for his MSCAE?

Brian, that is a very strong possibility...and as JS said, the "E" could stand for entertainment.
There's only one problem. What would the school have to do with making weapons? Then again, maybe LB is saying that the "saints and sinners" make the weapons.

I've searched and searched, but came up with nothing plausible. The "arts and entertainment" in reference to the Murrow School is a stretch. Journalism schools don't tend to put "entertainment" anywhere in their titles. Though, that is a good guess.
To digress a bit, I thought this might be the most political song in the album. But I am beginning to view "What's the World Coming To" as the one. Look at the last verse of that song. Lindsey is unequivocally making a statement on the rampant censorship that is gripping this free nation of ours. He's talking about the new McCarthyism. I bet that song was written within the last 18 months. It has to be. He references the corporate scandals in the first verse, and the allusions to the censorship seem very timely. Of course, the song is inextricably tied to the theme of "Murrow." They address similar themes. If they had taken another six months to finish the album, Lindsey might have just written another one or two political songs.
Notice the third song is "Illume," which though not fundamentally a political song, it serves up some commmentary on the state of the world.
Methinks Lindsey is trying to make a statement with this album. Perhaps why Stevie was pissed about song sequencing?

Carne I think in one of those sound clips from LB appearing on some radio show/interview thing he said that WTWCT was written after he had given his solo stuff to Warners and they rejected it. He said this song was a personal reaction towards that but still could be interpreted in a more general way by the audience also. This statement is not literally but it`s analogous what he said. :wavey:

FREE ASSOCIATION...from the horse's mouth! He couldn't say MSNBC in the song, so he made this up. Livia talks about it in the thread on the Rumours Ledge about her sitting in on a phone interview with Lindsey!! Go read all about it!!
