I have always been a believer in the idea that the only stupid questions are the ones that are not asked, so at the risk of sounding like an idiot . . .

I have been listening to the various incantations of this song since I got the TISL demos, and I still have yet to figure out what the heck Stevie means by "thrown down like a barricade". I get the gist of everything else in the song, but what is the analogy here involving a barricade?

I realize that some of you all have been around the Ledge for awhile and probably analyzed this song to death already, but that was before my time here. :D So if anyone can make sense of this for me, I can stop driving myself crazy. Thanks!:wavey:

Do you think that Kristen's pregnancy could be the barricade that was "thrown down"? Desiree

lol, I'm so glad you asked!!! I ponder this frequently, usually somewhere away from the ledge, like trying to sleep at 3 Am (yeah, i know...macitis)... and i never thought to ask...

I can't wait ot hear some others' ponderings..

That is an interesting way to look at it! I agree that there alot of things that could be a barricade to Stevie and Lindsey getting back together, but I just can't seem to understand the whole "thrown down" concept. Maybe I just don't understand what exactly "thrown down" means.

How can it be about Lindsey?

"Maybe now he could prove to her
That he could be good for her
That they could be together"

I don't think Stevie's sitting in her room imagining up scenarios about Lindsey desperately wanting to get back with her!

From the context of the lyrics, Thrown Down seems to mean 'he' has come round to 'her' place, wearing his heart on his sleeve, to tell her how he feels and that 'they should be together'; to give him another chance.

But she's over it, says 'no thanks', but now feels confused and sad.

Maybe I'm way off!

Personally I always thought that maybe Stevie wrote Thrown Down about John and Christine. She did write it during The Dance tour. Like Joe said, you can't always assume that every song about a man and a woman that Stevie writes is about her and Lindsey.

But, maybe it's a metaphor for being good for her musically, so they can be together again, musically. And since rumours every song about men and women is about Stevie and Lindsey, or at least have the possibility to read it from that perspective. It's something they play with in their lyrics, in their interviews, and in their stageperformances. Ít has become a part of their poetry.

I think you've hit it on the head, Gerald. I think the song is about Stevie and Lindsey and their newfound ability to work together. The phrase "thrown down like a barricade" has to do with communication, I think.

And it gives a beautiful meaning to "you're not like other people, you do what you want to".

As in an interview on say you will: Lindsey is for offending everyone, Stevie is for keeping it more safe.

oooh, oooh, :wavey: I have a theorey about the phrase "thrown down like a barricade"

I've always thought it refers to those metal barricades put up at concerts which separate average concert goers from concerts workers including Stevie....it's a physical barrier which can separate the love and adoration of the fan from Stevie and FM.

It's a barrier that Stevie would commonly see and she's uses it as a metaphor to show the renewal in communication in a strained relationship.

Or...it could be referring to her sort of putting up walls(emotionally),like a barricade..to not let this person in again because she knows that it won't work or she will get hurt...

Wow! That seems to make sense to me.

I envisioned it as well as a barrier that was knocked over, gotten rid of, so that now Lindsey and Stevie could emotionally reconnect.

"Thrown down like a barricade" conjures up images of physical barricades to me. Much like someone else mentioned earlier... barricades meant to keep crowds at bay. To me "thrown down like a barricade" implies shock. Although I'm really not a Stevie/Lindsey romantic... I really have to believe that this song was written about a possible budding romance between them during the Dance tour. She's just so shocked at the situation... and wonders if this is really happening. So basically Lindsey telling Stevie he "liked" her again would knock her over... out of surprise and shock. This song to me is about the surprise of the possibility of going back and fixing a relationship... but at the same time being a little unsure... and telling him that he's gonna have to really prove he's able to do it right. -Louie

What about the lines--

He fell for her again
She watched it happen
every day, day by day
but more important, night by night.

Could this be about Lindsey once again recognizing the incredible talent of Stevie, watching her on stage-night after night? For quite awhile, maybe in his anger with STevie, he didn't really appreciate her talent and how much her fans love her and how good her music really is. Those "barricades" (or harsh feelings)to him recognizing how good they are together musically and how good she is musically had fallen and been "thrown down?"

Or, is that going too far with it?

I kind of always thought "like a barricade" referred to a bunch/crowd of people (say in a parade) previously docile and contained by a barricade that suddenly become too excited and riot while throwing down the barricade that previously contained them. Then, afterward, all that is left of this rush of people and the craziness is a thrown down barricade and silence. I think that makes sense from a pent up emotion point of view. But, who knows. Someone needs to give Ms. Nicks a pad and paper with questions requesting very detailed answers!!!

As much as I love Stevie and Lindsey, I have to say, I don't think it has anything to do with a relationship between them. As much as I hate to be pragmatic, I think it is like all things Stevie; part about herself and part about someone else, real or fictitious. It is a very simple analogy (surprisingly simple, I beleive, as far as Stevie goes) Thrown down like a barricade....someone is behaving in a way that is like an emotional roadblock.
