View Full Version : Uncut Magazine: Tango-era violence??

Mad4stevie

I was pretty surprised about the first paragraph of the Uncut Magazine article. I had read about this supposed fight between Lindsey and the band in Mick Fleetwood's autobiography, but I thought that Mick later explained that it was blown out of proportion in his book. I remember being shocked that Lindsey pushed Stevie over the car and slapped her. It just seems weird that this story comes up again, almost exactly as it was told in Mick Fleetwood's biography.

That was one knock-out, drag-out fight! Stevie said that she and Lindsey were chasing each other up and down Christine's long driveway and that they were hitting each other. When he hit her, she screamed at him and swore at him, then told him if she didn't kill him, her father and her brother would. She also said that she's not a frightening person, but she can be vicious. I just couldn't believe Lindsey hit her, I still can't. I think it was the same night that Stevie bitched about barely being on TITN and Christine bitched her out. Then John told Lindsey to leave and he left the band. But what John meant was to leave the room!

From what I've gathered it was more than that. A certain amount of strangulation may have occured allegedly, don't know from who though.

I was surprised by that, too. At least he tried to justify it later by saying it was the result of the entire band abandoning Lindsey to do Tango in the Night all by himself.

I don't really think either extreme is 100% true.

I don't know. Have you seen the BBC Rock Family documentary about the Mac from '94? Stevie came right out and said it got EXTREMELY ugly, but only told us surface information. I think a LOT went down in that house on that night. A lot. LOL

What if Stevie was high that particular day and she attacked Lindsey first when he said he didn't want to tour and stuff? Maybe he hit her AFTER she hit him? I dunno. Just a thought...

Lindsey pushed Stevie against a car and slapped her, but he MIGHT have done it because she was being crazy or something, trying to calm her down?

I'm not saying he was right in hitting her, I'm just wondering what caused this man who is most definitely NOT a violent person to hit Stevie.

I think it is only fair to assume that they all had a part in what happend.Everyone loses it now and then..Stevie is not a saint, nor is Lindsey...when you are pissed off,you are pissed off.If he did hit her, that's not too cool..but who is to say she didn't instigate it somewhat..I am sure if he really wanted to hurt her he would have done alot more than slap her,you know? Bottom line,s**t happens. These people led crazy-ass lives...so you really can't be surprised when you hear stuff like this.

As far as I know, and from what Stevie herself said, she was the one who attacked first. She said she just flew off the couch and attacked him. Hope this puts your mind at ease, Christy!

But...I just can't picture Stevie getting soooooo out of control where someone would have to hit her to calm her down. And I don't think she was high because she had already been to Betty Ford and was into the whole presciption drug thing.

Ah, the crazy past of Fleetwood Mac!

Well, I may be wrong about the coke time frame - and thanks for the correction guys. But then that brings up another very salient point; early recovery. It can be worse than the active addiction itself for the person trying to clean up. In fact, a person can actually act quite insane during that time. Just another interesting bit of speculation. Maybe Stevie really "freaked" out in an early recovery episode. What makes this type of thing so difficult is that the person is suddenly forced to deal with all those things that they had been escaping from while active in the addiction.

So I'm going to stick to my original statement, if anything, because it will tweak a lot of people on this board:
"Maybe Stevie deserved a good crack in the mouth"

rofl!! - just trying to stir things up a bit

David, don't hold back next time.

I'm agreeing with ya tho....she was probably a lil wacked out on recovering and the prescription drugs too probably had a toll, plus, stress too can make one really crazy.

I'm not DEFENDING Lindsey's actions, I'm just wondering, like you guys, what the heck really happened?

Brian has a good point too tho...that was the past...we've ALL done stupid stuff and...in the words of Lindsey...

THIS IS THE TIME (to concentrate on!!)!!!!

APRIL 15th is so close, I can SMELL it!!

I don't know of any woman in this world that needs to be hit, but I don't think she was suffering from post-coke insanity. Remember, she was in Betty Ford a good six months at least before this broke out. When she was released, she was put on medication to hinder the side effects of going off of coke. I don't think anyone was insane; I think tempers flared, emotional things that were suppressed appeared again, and Lindsey had a severe lapse in judgement about hitting women. No man should ever raise their hand to a women, EVER. But thankfully, this is all in the past and they've moved forward. :)

Don't underestimate the nature of early recovery. Until you've been through it yourself, there's no way you could understand - drugs or no drugs. The first couple years can be hell.

Stevie didn't have to necessarily be drugged to do what she did, just pissed off. I once came across a conference table at a co-workers who had just tried to blame me for some screw-up of his in front of our boss. I'm not sure how I intended to get across that conference table, or what I intended to do when I got to him, in fact, I can't really remember jumping for him at all. I just remember him leaping out of his chair and making a run for the door to get away from me. I'm 5'3 and weigh about 120 pounds and my co-worker was 6'4 and weighed around 250. I'm not a hitter, and am a very non-violent person, although I will tell you exactly what I'm thinking if you tick me off. And this guy was in no way shape or form an ex-boyfriend of mine--so I can't even begin to imagine what the emotions must have been like that night at Christine's! Maybe Stevie just had one of those moments where a lot of anger & resentment just surfaced to the top. Maybe Lindsey did too. Unfortuantely both their moments were at the same time leading to a little mass insanity.

fair enough. I do agree with you though - don't get me wrong, as I'm not condoning hitting women. I don't think anything really justifies that either. My comments were, for the most part, tongue-in-cheek. And I'm glad Stevie got cleaned up (and for that matter, the rest of them as well). It paved the way for this reconcilation of sorts. And now we're ready to rock it again;)

Stevie did say this, but she said she was enraged because she demostrated years of loyalty by needlessly (career-wise at that time) coming back to Fleetwood Mac (the truth of her statement is another discussion at another time  ) only to have LB then say I am leaving the band after producing an album and then not touring to support it. That was, at the least, not very nice of him ;) Who would not have been pissed? As an aside, my favorite quote from this period is LB saying "What was I going to tour for - to watch Stevie twirl?" :)

I also doubt if Stevie was indeed that wacked out in Klonopin/Prozac because she has stated that did not happen until after she had written and done work on TOSOTM, which was presumably way after TITN's release.

I think Stevie's words that "we finally broke up that day" are the most accurate depiction. 10 or so years of pent up frustration can be potent!

Also, I am wondering why it is assumed LB is totally non-violent. Has this been quoted somewhere. Note: I am just asking in a non-confrontational way as I do not think any on them are particularly violent to the point and there was Chris allegedly slapping LB after he allegedly kicked SN in the shin(s) on stage in Europe on the Tusk tour during Rhiannon - but then LB denies it and instead alleges he just sang out of key (perhaps intentionally :) ) - Oh the saga of it all :), esp. considering LB and MF have admitted to havong problems with Coke and other stuff for significant periods including some of the time of the making of TITN (except SN, who allegedly quit prior to then).

Yes, not in Iraq, unlike John Simpson the BBC reporter I admire and the only reporter I trust to speak the truth who was nearly killed today when another US F15 cowboy hit his convoy in northern Iraq. The only two incidents I have heard of of alleged violence are the Rhiannon Tusk tour incident and the TITN tour incident, which all parties, except Mick "I'll say anything if it'll get me a buck," have denied lead to a complete "ass whipping" :) I think Stevie was perhaps speaking figuratively, although, again, you never know. I think they both gave it as good as they got. I can only imagine what things were said between the two of them. As Stevie was quoted in Rock Lives:

"We said too much to each other. We said all the things that we had wanted to say for the last ten years, and we screamed at each other. Those things in a relationship that you try to never say just in case you do get back together. We said those things."

I recall in Mick's book that there was a mention of another violent event - no details, though. At least that was the implication. After recounting the "slap" the book went on to say something like "it wasn't the first time". So who knows?

But then again it is very silly to take sides over an argument that took place 15 or so years ago that has long since been resolved, and that we were not involved in in the first place.

Wow!! I have never heard that. There seems to be an aspect of control in alot of his relationships with women. I had heard that it was cocaine, not alcohol, that tended to fuel his "agressiveness".

Interesting thread. I have read Micks book and at the time he wrote it, his interest must have been SN, because Lindsey had already left the band and was useless for Micks money machine, so maybe that made the story a little "unbalanced". On the other hand there is something about Lindsey... something a little dark.
I once read something rather interesting, LB did an interview in germany and said that he left FM for a reason that had nothing to do with creative freedom, or his own plans. He was desperately in love with Christine McVie and couldn't stand it anymore, she had just married and asked him to leave her alone. Stevie was not so happy about Lindseys romantic feelings for Chris, felt betrayed and freaked out. So this ugly evening happened.
I heve only seen this story once and I have no idea if there is any thruth to it, but I always found it an interesting twist in the FM history.

MissJanet, it's a little difficult to swallow that Lindsey could become besotted with the likes of Christine when he'd had a chick the calibre of Stevie. I have a soft spot for ol' girl McVie but then I guess that's the problem... she doesn't exactly incite a raging hard-on!

I can just picture him sitting there on the couch, listening to her talking about her frothy spirits & magick & watching her raise her froopy maker-of-birds' wings, & then casually sticking his foot out, sending her on her magickal way. Children can be so mean.

The difference between my perspective on the Buckingham-Nicks relationship & that of some of my fellow fans is that they see the nastiness between the two as sublimated passion whereas I see it as indicative of a genuine annoyance factor. Hey LindseyRocks-David, I tried to just shrug off you comments about Stevie deserving a good crack in the mouth...I know you made it to be funny but I never found one occasion to laugh as I watched my own Dad beat up on my Mom many many times while I was growing up. And I am thankful every day I was able to break my own cycle of domestic violence and find a husband who does not feel that a good crack in the mouth is the way to solve an arguement.

Could somebody explain to me how slapping someone would CALM them? this is a "medical" leftover from a more patriarchal time, when advice suggested the best way to calm an hysterical person down was to "shock" them into silence by a good slap across the face. so guess who was considered the type to get more hysterical?? men or women? and guess who did most of the slapping?? men or women?

Now as for Stevie and Lindsey, well, that's between them and forgiveness is their perogative.

I think that's because it was taken exactly from Mick Fleetwood's biography. Notice nobody from the band currently was quoted in the re-telling of this story for this article.

Lindsey and Stevie have both had their say on this in the many years since 1987 and both offer stories that differ from Mick's version. No amount of innuendo and rumor will ever give us the real truth and the two parties involved would seem to prefer to keep the whole story to themselves. From what they have said, it seems to me they both played a part and both have gotten over and forgiven whatever transgressions took place.

The magazine included Mick's version of the story for the scandal factor (regardless of the truth), because it generates discussion -- and it has.

I don't think you are right, Christine has always attracted men, have you ever seen her in person? Pictures and videos don't do her justice, in the 1990 tour she had the entire house at her feet at the end of the concert. Elegant, slender and beautiful, that was Christine. Add the dry humour and the talent, she is perfect (pun intended)!

Lindsey has always denied he hit her, and still does. He has said they were never friends, so the blowup wasn't surprising, IMO.

From the Uncut article:
"For Buckingham, Say You Will is the first Fleetwood Mac studio album he has been involved with since the fateful Tango in the Night, and although he disputes some of the details of the confrontation that resulted in his 1987 departure, he concedes euphemistically it was "not a happy day"."

They've both been in love several times since then, not to mention that Lindsey is happily married with two children now, and Stevie has stated that it's actually a man other than Lindsey whom she considers to be the love of her life.

But I think they both acknowledge (perhaps somewhat begrudgingly) that the other functions extremely well as their muse.
After all, an almost infinite amount of material can be mined from a tempestuous relationship... especially one that has taken many shapes, and has existed for so many years.

You are crazy. :D

I'm sorry but Christine is not even remotely attractive. And that's fine, because I like her songwriting and voice anyway. But really people let's be realistic; calling Christine beautiful is a stretch.

For anyone who questions Christine's sex appeal, just check out the "Seven Wonders" video.
The woman is absolutely GORGEOUS there.

Personally, I think Christine is a beautiful woman, period.
I tend to think of her along the lines of someone like Linda McCartney. Their physical beauty is perhaps more subtle, because they come off in a very earthy, motherly way.

Amen - also, she had a killer sense of style ("Belair Chic") in the 80 and 90's.

What about "Life in the Fastlane", by the Eagles? Isn't that supposedly about S&L's relationship? Somehow I think Lindsey seems like he could have been one mean SOB, very "cruel". JMHO!!!!! But, he does seem to have mellowed over the past few years. Desiree

By the way, Christine is gorgeous. Those eyes and her cool chic make her sexy as hell.

I think Christine is a natural beauty. She has the whole package: looks, great sense of humor, style, etc.

I wholeheartedly believe that Lindsey hit Stevie. He has shown that he can be violent (kicking her on-stage, tripping her backstage, SUPPOSEDLY abusing that model chick). Stevie herself pretty much confirmed what Mick said in his book in a BBC doc from 1994. No matter how you cut the mustard, LB hit her. And there is no reason known to man why a man should inflict violence on a woman; defend him all you want, but it's true. Now, I really don't believe Carol-Ann and what she was saying on Donahue. I think that is bull****. But he seems very controlling and possessive. But, he's mellowed out in recent years!

I think the love of Stevie's life is clearly John McVie. :)

I've never really noticed Christine in the Seven Wonders video, as I was too busy drooling over Stevie, who looks stunning in it. Lindsey looks like a right smug git though.

As for Lindsey and Stevie... Who knows... All this belief in "cycles" and "destiny"... I'm sure the story isn't over yet. A sick part of me kind of wants more scandal from this band, no matter who it disrupts.

I'm with you on that. I love the drama! I know, I know, it's kind of (okay, really) wrong....but hey.

And I think Christine is absolutley beautiful. Just look at those eyes in the "Hold Me" video. She has a different kind of beauty and that's what I love. Plus, her style is really just the best. So...classic rock chic.

I think that whatever really happened will never be revealed....when 2 people are that involved with each other, there is a fine line between love and hate. And since Stevie herself said something about "we said all the awful things you aren't supposed to say to each other in case we got back together" that says it all. How many of us have crossed that line? I certainly have. Passion has a way of becomming very ugly at times. Plus, didn't Lindsey recently say that they still have a few more conversations left to have? What's in the past should stay there, but it does make for fabulous music.

Lindsey pushed Stevie against a car and slapped her, but he MIGHT have done it because she was being crazy or something, trying to calm her down?

I'm not saying he was right in hitting her, I'm just wondering what caused this man who is most definitely NOT a violent person to hit Stevie.

Stevie had just come out of Betty Ford at this time, so I doubt that she was high. As far as him hitting her, it has also been said that it was not the first time. It was a matter of things that had built up over twleve years coming to a head.

Maybe Stevie really "freaked" out in an early recovery episode. What makes this type of thing so difficult is that the person is suddenly forced to deal with all those things that they had been escaping from while active in the addiction.

I know you weren't asking me, but I really think the love of her life was Joe Walsh. Think about it. It's the only relationship that she never really talks about. Plus, he's the only one of her ex's that she seemingly doesn't stay in contatct with. As much as I would love it to be Lindsey...I really think it was Joe.

I'm confused about the time frame too. She was supposedly dating Jimmy up until "Rock a Little" right? But she's also said that her and Joe got together when he opened for her on the "Wild Heart" tour.

I don't really know why her and Joe's relationship ended b/c she rarely ever mentions it. I think the last time she talked about their relationship was in an interview that she did around the time of "The Other Side of the Mirror". I don't remember word for word, but it was basically that he didn't take their relationship as serious as she did. She said that she would have quite possibly given up everything for him if she thought that he could actually be serious for more that 2 seconds. I don't know. Maybe someone can post the interview....I don't remember a lot of it.

I think Lindsey is really, and I'm sure that she is his, even though he's now happily married. I don't mean that he doesn't love his wife, but I think the most important change for him as a person probably happened with Stevie, and vice versa... Isn't Planets Of The Universe about Lindsey?

Then again, what do I know... How do you decide who the love of your life is anyway? I find it's usually the person you speak about most when you've had too much to drink.

Carol Ann was on Geraldo:nod:
A couple of nice shots of her and Lindsey were shown. From what I have gathered in my Mac studies. Carol Ann got hooked on cocaine just like the whole band but it seems LB quit his habit and she continued her habit. I also read in BAM 1992, he mentions that he loved Dennis Wilson but that Dennis had an affair with his girlfriend and that he was such a nice guy that all was forgiven:confused:
Carol kind of looks like one of Dennis' ex-wives.

In 1997, Lindsey introduced Big Love with his speech about cycles. He said he was a different man when he wrote the song. He said we should learn from our mistakes. I believe he is a different man... and he's learned from his mistakes... and grown up. You can hear it in his music. OOTC is all about self discovery. The GOS era songs are about Love, passion, fantasy and the world around him.

Bella,

I agree with you. It's almost a relief that someone else mentioned it because honestly, since I read David's post it's been nagging at me.

David, having been exposed to abusive situations I can honestly say that you can't and shouldn't make light, even playfully of those kinds of situations. Perhaps you don't really think anyone deserves to get hit, so I can dismiss that as a thoughtless comment. I do; however, find it a bit offensive to suggest that someone who has experienced abussive situations, and who is brave enough to express their feelings about your comments should "lighten up". Instead it would have been a perfect opportunity for you to take the high road and perhaps express regrets that anyone would have to go through that.

Bella, you are definately not alone. Thanks for helping me find my voice!

Lindsey is the one true love of Stevie's life=:-)This is what I want to believe so I do believe it. Hehe=:-) Whether they are "in love" or not though I believe they care deeply for one another. You don't have a stormy relationship like theirs with a person you don't care about. I think one of the reasons Lindsey left the band was having to watch Stevie self-destruct on drugs. It was painful to him to watch it. He didn't know at the time she'd eventually kick the habit.

Personally I think it was rather rude of Mick to put that whole scene in the book-kinda like washing the family linen in public you know-what went on between the band members as people should have been private-think how embarrassing it must be to them now to have all this dragged out all the time. They've grown up, gotten off drugs and this is in the past for them now and I am sure they'd like to leave it there=:-)

I am sure there will always be friction between Lindsey and Stevie-they are both intense, creative, perfectionistic and yes, controlling=:-)But think of the beautiful music that comes out of that tension....

no problem, David-Lindsay Rocks, glad I could help :wavey: I knew that your original comments were in jest and meant to provoke so I tried to make my comments raw and honest and actually exposed something quite personal on this board. ~and boy, have I second guessed myself all day~

I actually edited my comments several times but I really could not remove them in good faith even though I knew it would amuse you because in the end, it's not about rebuking or amusing you. It's about being true to myself and my beliefs, and successfully speaking out for any others who felt as uncomfortable as I did. Domestic violence has always been a very important subject to me, and if you give me a platform, I will always ascend the soapbox....

PC-politically correct. what really is this pc??? yes, it can be hard to speak out in these modern times especially with humor. Humor often does hinge on one person's pain being another person's entertainment. A slip on a banana peel is funny to everyone except to the person who's back is now in traction. A tack on the teachers chair is great fun, except for the tetanus shot needed later.

You're so right - I don't want to believe Lindsey is violent, so I've been trying to figure out ways where that's not true. I really admire and respect Lindsey and it would be really hard to continue doing so if I thought he was like that.

So here's what I tell myself: the "Rhiannon" bit was an isolated incident due to the circumstances surrounding the end of the mammoth Tusk tour; Carol Ann and Mick were exaggerating; Stevie attacked Lindsey and not the other way around (not that she deserved to be hit, as hilarious as doing cruel things to her is  - oh, and I didn't know about the tripping. Man, that doesn't make Lindsey look cruel so much as it makes him look completely LAME!); he'd never do anything like that again. I belive that that's possible and I choose to give Lindsey the benefit of the doubt.

On Christine: She's beautiful, just a different type of beauty. Stevie has a sexier aura but Chris is still lovely. I guess some guys will never go for that but some guys do. She's certainly not ugly, however, by any stretch of the imagination. I wouldn't be suprised if sometime during the Rumours merry-go-round Christine got to ride Lindsey, lol, but I don't buy that it happened during Tango and that it was his burning love for her that made him leave. I think it's obvious the "creative reasons" were the main ones, as well as what he's also stated about not being emotionally able to stay in a group with Stevie anymore.

On Iovine: Stevie has a thing for men who produce her music. lol
