View Full Version : What makes a fan!

;) I've been reading these posts for some time now, because I find it entertaining as hell. First, I didn't think there were as many people out there who had been a devoted FM fan as long as I have. 28yrs and counting. I can boast that I boought the rumours album/tusk etc when they hit store shelves. So I consider myself somewhat of an expert.
The one thing that's alsways left me perplexed about being a fan are the barbs that this fine and takes in the press and album reviews. I remember a radio poll when tusk came out along the lines of keep the sucker or give it the boot! I couldn't believe my ears! THis is an instant classic and they want to toss it!
I cant describe the excitement of going to the store when albums came out just to see the cover. When Mirage came out, the cover gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes, now that's a fan. And the music inside turned on my record player constantly for years. I've worn out the vinyl of the white album, rumours, tusk and mirage.
What this band is about is evolution. I have never paid attention to the critics, I am my own critic, and I've enjoyed every song this band has done, some are better than others, but none of them are unlistenable. What makes a fan is someone who joins in the evolution of what is Fleetwood Mac. We accept that they're human, make mistakes, get older, have deeper voices etc., so do we! I would like to see more celebration of what FLeetwood Mac brings to our lives on these boards, not the constant bitching about petty details like grammar in Smile at You. Wake up folks this is the Mac at their best in 2003. Let's enjoy it we have one of their best albums ever coming to us in a month. Enjoy. I would be willing to talk to any fan on this issue. AFter all, I'm an expert in the field of truly enjoying this awesome band. (notice how I use band and not Stevie this Lindsey that! Cheers.

i COMPLETELY agree with you especially about the grammar thing...i really skimmed over those posts cause i really can't be concerned about that stuff....that's not to say that other people can't post their gripes and what not but i'll just continue to shake my head and move on when i start losing interest in a post...
Anyway, personally, i am TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY enjoying life right now....it's 2 days til spring and i'm very psyched as it's warmed up in NY finally!!! Spring is my favorite season...AND to top it all off we have a new FM record coming out in less than a month! Then....a week after my birthday in May i'll be going to see them in concert-at three different venues! zI could give a crap whether Stevie's using correct punctuation and grammar....hahahaha!!! sorry, just being honest! So....as i've said before i'm all about the anticipation of an event so i'm very happy and content right now....To top it all off and above everything else i think the record sounds great from what i've heard.

Joe and Canuck Fan, first this is topic that's been debated ad nauseum here. Second, if grammar is irrelevant to you, which I can see by your posts, that's fine with me. But I sure as hell wouldn't boast about it if I were you.
Lastly, Canuck, I don't believe you're qualified to judge how big a fan I am or am not based on my remarks about Stevie's poor use of grammar. Let's keep things in perspective here.

Hey Carne, I'm not here to judge you. You wouldn't be here if you weren't a fan. I praise you for your good taste in music. All I'm saying is that there should be more of a celebration of the music and less criticism, no one can argue with that eh? By the way, I agree that Lindsey is a master of the guitar and songwriting, so is Stevie (not so much guitar, but songwriting for sure), that's what makes them a combo that noone in the music business can touch, dare I say Richards and Jaggar? Have a great day Carne.:wavey:

I completely respect your opinion CarneVaca. Grammar is very important to me but not in music. I don't expect you to understand why i view it that way but that's just the way it is for me. Rock and roll has never been about "correctness" in my opinion. However, when it comes down to my own writing i do take grammar and punctuation very seriously. However, i don't always apply those rules to these posts as i'm just trying to get some thoughts across and assume i'm not being "graded" on my writing! LOL!

Canuck fan, you're a breath of fresh Candian air. You took the words right out of my mouth, with you're initial post. You're right on the mark!
l have the same kind of feelings and emotions when I go to the record store to buy a new Fleetwood Mac or related solo album. I'm also a "qualified" fan. I remember very clearly buying the Rumours album several weeks after it was released. One of the most exciting memories ever!
Word to CarneVaca: Get off your grammatical high horse! Not only am I a fan, I'm a writer by profession, and had
previously been an English teacher. As such, I am also a stickler for good grammar...but guess what? Music is one of those forums where the rules are much more fluid -- it's about emotional and feeling and soul -- not about textbook grammar.
Anyone who has observed and followed rock and roll through the years knows that it's a genre littered with "untraditional" uses of the English language. It's a matter of artistic liscense! How boring and uninspired it would be if all artists approached their music in a strict manner that pleases you!
Does Stevie's use of artisic liscense irk me sometimes? Of course!
Her constant switching of tenses; Her poorly chosen pronouns; Her vague language...the list goes on.
However, as much as that can bother me from a purely scholarly perspective, it is one of the elements that makes Stevie so unique, and that's why I can accept and embrace it. Without idiosyncrasy, all music would be a homogenized. Blah, blah, blah...lol
My only big gripe? I wish The Ledge had spellcheck.

I'm hearing new songs now that I LOOOVE (how long has it been since THAT Happened, by ANY artist?! :distress: ), Spring is upon us, my birthday is in a few weeks (with no depression this year!!), the album will be in my hands soon, I will realize a lifelong dream to see Fleetwood Mac live, and spend the rest of this summer cruising Ocean Blvd. (which is now happily home) listening to Say You Will with my Mac~mate.... I would say Life Is Good!
sorry if that sounds goofy, but that is really what Fleetwood Mac is doing in my life right now!
So much to look forward to....what a switch!!

You could have left well enough alone, now that Canuck Fan and I kissed and made up.

I'm glad you weren't my teacher. A teacher defending the use of "ran" when it should be clearly "run?" Man, I just shake my head at that one. :distress:

Are you trying to have it both ways or simply contradicting yourself now?

I'm most definitely not trying to perpetuate this argument, but I just wanted to remind you, CV, that you excused the use of double-negatives for "effect."
So, with that knowledge, I don't see how PenguinHead's comments could be considered contradictory by you.
He or she (sorry, PenguinHead, but I'm not sure of your gender) clearly stated that while something such as "ran" vs. "run" may bother him/her from an intellectual standpoint, he/she feels that, in music, the rules are a lot more relaxed.
Again, I don't see how that can be considered contradictory.
After all, if we're going to let one type of grammatical error go by without disapproval (even going so far as to justify it), why can't we excuse others?
It can be argued that *all* grammatical side-steps in song lyrics are done for "effect," in one way or another.
Like I mentioned in the other thread, I'm a bit of a stickler for proper grammar (though I readily admit that I make my own mistakes!)... but when it comes to rock music, I'm extremely forgiving, because I tend to feel that rock is supposed to be a more relaxed, "anything goes" environment.
(By the way, CV... it seems we've found something to actually agree on... politics of all things!) :)

Indeed, imagine all those old blues guys singing lines like, "She doesn't love me anymore" instead of "She don't love me no more," or "My baby left me" as opposed to "My baby done leave me." The charm would be lost, as I am sure you would agree.
In such cases, I would rather have the bad grammar just because it is more real. But using "ran" instead of "run" just strikes me as laziness. Sorry, that's how I feel. I know I'm not going to change your mind. That's OK.

So there you go. I'm not all bad after all. ;)

I remember the excitement of the old days also. Boy was I made fun of in school for loving the Mac, must have been back in 76, before they where the in thing.
My dad owned a record store in 77, so he ordered me all the older albums, I could hardly wait to rip off the plastic wrap. No one in my family could understand my obsecion.
I remember waiting for my lunch break at work so I could walk as fast as I could in my high heel to the record store and buying the Mirage album. It was so bad that the next day I would return to see how many records where left in the bin.
Funny all these years later I'm still the same.
My old regret is I have never seen them live, that would be my dream.
I know Im a true fan, always will be.
