HOLY ****!!!!!

I can't believe that I'm hearing Stevie sing the way she does. I never thought I'd hear that voice again! It sounds amazing!

You have to have AOHell... or I've heard you can get to it if you have Netscape as a browser...
I think that it won't work for me because my version of AOHell is outdated, and when I try to upgrade, it takes forever with my old slow computer, so I never have gotten it all downloaded!! (and continuously boots me, so I may never)

I got the "first listen" Peacekeeper from another source, so maybe that will work out again.. YEAH, the fans rock!! ;)

OOOOHHHHHHH!!!!

I love it!! Very different arrangement from the Tusk or Mirage outtake versions. Lyrics are similar to the Tusk version.

My only disappointment is that there is no "my heart was broken . . . fly to your castle in the sky . . ." at the end of the song. I wish Lindsey did more harmony on the song, too.

Chorus is different. I can't quite make out what they are singing in the chorus. What I do hear loud and clear is Stevie's "Ahhhhh". What a great voice!!! Rock on Stevie!!!

You have to subscribe to AOL. It's free for the first 45 days. I cna't find the video everyone is talking about. The subscribing part was easy.
I haven't heard Stevie sing like that in quite a while. It's not angry though. There's kind of a jazzy bent to it. Like I said, I'm going to have to get used to this. I liked Say You Will the minute I heard it. I think I'm just so used to the Mirage out take (angry version).

Yep. It is not nearly as angry as the Mirage version. I am so used to that version, especially the "flaaaaaaaaaaaming" part - I miss it :(

I think it's great! Stevie sounds so amazing! There is something about Lindsey that he just brings the best out in her. By the way the song is very edgy and definetaly something critics will love. This is the kind of stuff the album needs if it is going to be taken seriously today. So far the stuff I heard makes me very proud. This is so not Mirage, (which I love ) it is Tusk taken to another level. I did'nt know Smile at You before, (I heard it once )so you guys who are used to the other version will get used to it. It's really another song! I think it's brilliantly done.

Well it seems we don't have to worry about the entire Lp being too mainstream anymore!I was not that attached to the demo versions that have been around for decades so I love this new one great vocal by Stevie as well!

I really like this new version but I'm attached to the "angry" demo that's been out there for years too. It's almost like a different song with the background vocals & new arrangement. It's really a new take on an old song, that's for sure! And everyone is right, Stevie's voice sounds just fabulous!

K, all my anger has melted away as I enjoy this song. Holy S--t! Sarah, Thank you so much for the link!!! I must not have seen it before my earlier post. You're awesome. And Barbara (the person who posted it on their site) if you see this, YOU RULE. Your kitties are cute too.
Wow! Wow! Wow!! I can't believe it's this amazing! I honetly didn't expect it to be this good!!! Guys, she's singing it in the SAME KEY!!!! This calls for celebration :woohoo:!! I love the last verse at the end "Go on save yourself..." she's doing that thing with her voice we haven't heard in a while.
No "FLAAAAMIN"...but I can live with that. This song far exceeds my expectations. Lindsey is a genius. What he's done with this song is so kick ass.
Wow. This just made my day. Thank you, thank you....

Thank you very much Sarah!!! :)
I've listened it once, I'm about to press PLAY again & do a little review:

- a totally different feel to the song we heard as a demo.. almost ANOTHER song though the melody is the same.

- it somewhat reminds me to what was done with Candlebright in TISL compared to the old Nomad. Also this arabesque-psychodelic feel! but then again yes, you were right when compared to Tango in the night.

- i think it's the most ellaborated bass line ever done by John! it sounds VERY present, at first I thought too much.. well I think that's ok, to give John this room on a song. I imagine the band playing it hard and full rocking & after Lindsey having the idea of cutting the drums and hard guitars and leaving the bass line intact. Somewhat it sounds like an "alternate version" to the one we knew.

- I love the chorus. In fact the demo was almost lacking of any chorus in my opinion, but I just got used to it. This chorus is a radical break from the verse, & I love the ethereal voices by lindsey.. the melodies remind me of.. Perry Farrell!! (Porno for Pyros, Jane's addiction)

Well it was worth the wait :D

Wow I love it. I love the guitars Lindsey put in there. I still love the demo, but this is done so well.
This is the best I have heard Stevie sing in years. She still has it folks.
I just wish I wasn't so sick right now, both of my ears are plugged and I can't even sing right now either. So when I'm better watch out.
I think this is my favorite right now next to thrown down.

I think it needs the signature Buckingham screaming guitar and "flyyyy...to your castle in the sky" ending. I'm sorry but I don't like it.:distress:

This is by far the best Nicks contribution, of the ones I've heard, to the new album. Lindsey went to the same place from which he pulled out "Make Me a Mask" for this one. I suspect there's a lot more going on in the song that we're not hearing because of the low quality of the file.

I especially dig the way the chorus was recorded -- it's an old panning trick Lindsey has used before. It's going to take me a while to learn to overlook the obvious grammatical goof in the chorus lyrics though.

Whoever owns that site, thank you much.

It's better than I ever could have expected. And I was nervous about this one! Now I cannot wait to hear what they've done with Running Through The Garden!!!

On another note, I don't understand those of you who complain that it's not like the Tusk or Mirage version. Who cares? We'll always have those versions, so I'm not sure why you would have wanted a replica to appear on the new album. IMHO this is a fantastic, and more importantly a fresh take on this song.

After you listen to Smile at You , go and listen to Destiny Rules.
I think some of us had a concern about Stevie's voice bieng so deep. When you listen to Destiny Rules again, you have a new appreciation for it. Try it. For those of you who didn't like the low vocal, I think you'll love it now. It shows her range is still there. Once the concern about Stevie's voice is gone, Destiny Rules can be taken for what it is, a great song.

I know, me too! I can't wait to hear it on a cd in my stereo. I must say it makes all the difference. I just got the promo single on cd of Peacekeeper through the radio station where I work (unfortunately I can't get any show tickets out of them though!) and blasted it in my stereo--- Boy, what an incredible difference! I must say I love this song now in a way I never thought I could...it is truly full and rich with those guitars with parts I couln't hear on an mp3, let alone on that aol first listen version which sounds like absolute crap by comparison! For those of you (like Carne:D) who are a little on the fence about Peacekeeper, you'll really be pleasantly surprised when you blast it in your home stereo. If anyone would like, I can post a super high quality version of Peacekeeper from the cd if you have the patience to download it. That way you can get a better sense of what it's supposed to sound like (just email me ([email protected])).

Anyway, back to Smile At You. I agree, it is a bit reminiscent of Make Me A Mask, which is so cool. This song has always had a really powerful bass line so it's awesome to hear that there. I wonder if they'll perform it live (can Stevie reach those notes night after night?) The new lyrics are awesome..."I can't accept her"....the chorus is awesome. I keep discovering new things about it with each listen. :D

Good point. I agree .
However, it doesn't change my concern about Say You Will: It is a fun, pretty song that I enjoy, but I'm a bit disappointed it doesn't have much of a melody...it's kinda monotone. Then again, I've only heard the clip, so there might be some surprises in the second half of the song.

WOW!!!

Not that I disliked them, but, I really did not like the demos that much. This is a very good take on this song. LB pulled out the stops. It has TITN and a little Make Me a Mask in it. And how about that guitar at the end.

My hat is off to Ms. Nicks for that vocal. Remember, she said they did not use "pro tools" on this record. So, if that means no vocal enhancement was used, then that is really her. Where the hell was that voice with that range for the last 10 years?

WOW!!!

Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine have all bent (or just flat-out broken!) the rules of grammar, at various times... but I'm of the mind that, as long as it sounds great, then who cares!
And this sounds GREAT!!! :D

Stevie's vocal is out of this world (i KNEW she could still sing like that, when she wants to!), and I love how they handled the chorus.

(Oh, and I think the lyric is, "I should've turned away and ran... just as fast as I can....")

With every new clip we get to hear, I grow more and more impressed with the sound of this album, and the song choices.
I really think people will be hard-pressed to find anything to seriously complain about with this album.

Is it April 15th yet?!

Not quite, Johnny. It's one thing to say "ain't gonna" or to use a double negative for effect. To use "ran" when it should obviously be "run" smacks of ignorance, or at the very least, carelessness. Then to say, "as fast as I can" instead of "could," though not entirely incorrect, does give you pause.

I don't mean to kick off another huge discussion on the mechanics of language, but this particular infraction is so objectionable that it is affecting my listening enjoyment. I just had to take two Tylenol as a result.

I suppose the plus for me, is that the guitar parts missing here - maybe confirm the big solo will still be there on "Come". You wouldn't put the original Smile At You with those bluesy licks straight after Come - so fingers crossed Come is still sounding as godly as before.

I agree Stevie sounds great on it by the way. But those guitar licks, coupled with Stevies' firey vocal performance on the "angry" version were just superb imo, and I would have liked to have seen them do it live.

Stevie sounds awesome! wow. I didn't realize how much I'd missed hearing that voice sound like that.

I really do like this version, but I guess I was just sooo looking forward to hearing her rip it out like she does on the demo that it was almost disappointing to hear it toned down so much. I miss the "flaming" wail.

Maybe there's still hope for that if they do it live.

In fact, one of my English teachers had a massive pet-peeve where double-negatives were concerned, and I guess that was sort of passed on to me.

Still, in the spirit of rock 'n roll, anything goes... so I tend to look past grammatical missteps, and just chalk it up to what works within the context of the lyrical scheme and melody.
It makes for a much happier (and less uptight!) listening experience! :D

Thanks, Alison, as I just read on another board, since AOL released it, I guess it must be the finished version.

That is, unless I hear it on the radio before then, which I don't think is likely.......ever.

I absolutely love this version. The angry version is still my fave but this one is great too! I knew Stevie still had it in her. I like Lindsey's part as well.

Oh...just have to say...I think it is understandable to notice grammar in ballads, showtunes, etc. But to notice grammar in a rock song, one must not fully appreciate rock and roll.

48% like it
38% love it
14% hate it

Not faring quite as well as Peacekeeper did in the AOL poll, but still an admirable showing.

Personally I think Stevie's vocals on this song are the most amazing thing about it. She sounds just like she did back in the day..........AMAZING!

All in all I think "Smile At You" is a great song, but I still prefer "Say You Will" and "Thrown Down''.

Yeah, all those countless hours of listening to rock 'n roll for the past 25 years count for nothing in terms of appreciating the art form just because I find a glaring grammatical error -- one that could have been easily fixed mind you -- bothersome. Never mind all those hours I have spent PLAYING rock 'n roll guitar either. Boy, what was I thinking?

And by the way, it ain't the "can" vs. "could" issue that's the real problem. It's the "ran" vs. "run" thing. Stevie Nicks is not unnerring, folks. It's OK to admit she made a stupid grammatical error in a song. Gee, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone more dedicated to Ms. Nicks than Sodascouts, but I don't see her excusing the error by saying it's OK because it's only rock 'n roll.

Hah, I love reading you US guys debate issues of grammar with the word 'aint' everywhere ;)

This version took me a listen to get use to, because it's so different from the angry version, and I don't even have the Tusk version (or whichever demo is the more sedate)

Now I'm loving it becuase to me it's so evocative of the Buckingham Nicks, folk thing they've got (and had) going. Whether it's the trippy, chant-like chorus, lack of typical rock drums, or possibly the highlight, the (Spanish?) guitar outro, it's indicative of a very new-sound Fleetwood Mac. Lay it on!

 Finally! We get to have this awesome song on an "official"cd for the rest of the world to enjoy. This definitely proves all the nay sayers like Carne Vaca wrong, that Stevie is the best female rocker out there, no one can even come close to her. I'm especially thrilled with the "true to me" line, gives me instant chills. Good job Fleetwood Mac.

I think that some of us are just of the mind that this "slip" seems to be a rather innocuous one, when counted alongside some of the other grammatical errors songwriters often make (whether intentionally or unintentionally)... including the other writers in Fleetwood Mac.

(In fact, it's too bad Lindsey didn't write it. After all, when Lindsey does something, it's just further proof of what a genius he is... but when Stevie does it, it's just clumsy writing.) ;)

Wow...I like it when I am surprised and all of my 2nd guessworking is thrown out the door.

It doesn't sound anything like I imagined. In fact, I just told a friend of mine the other day that I figured Sheryl Crow would be doing keyboards on this song because I didn't think it would work without them.

I am happy to say I was wrong (Mark this date...)

I love Stevie's voice, I love Lindsey's production and guitar work...

I am glad I have the other versions because they are so good, but this is perfect for the new album...

As much as I like them, the Backstreet Boys' songs have incorrect grammar. The Boys didn't write either of these songs, btw.

This is from "I'll Never Break Your Heart" a HUGE hit song.

"As time goes by you
Will get to know me
A little more better"

More better?!!?!? EEEK!! LOL

This one is from "All I Have to Give", another HUGE hit song.

"I don't care if he buys you nice things
Does his gifts come from the heart - I don't know"

Does his gifts? WTH?!?! LOL

Anywho...alot of songwriters use incorrect grammar, does that make the song less of a hit...apparently not.

Hey...but is that really a NEW STEVIE VOCAL? Why has she been holding back on us vocally for the last decade? Does it take Lindsey to push her vocally? Anyone? Sheryl got us that one note in head voice in the track, "It's Only Love" ["You melted all the ICE"] and on "Sorcerer" [MiserYYYYY] but I had no idea she could push her voice continually high like she has on this track. Man. Stevie. If you are out there. Thanks for getting off your lazy butt. [just a joke...ducking] Keep up the good work.

Could someone please explain where this damn grammar error is? I'm an moron I suppose because I cannot hear it. Thanks.

And also good point Johnny Stew. If it is that atrocious of an error, wouldn't Mr. Anal himself (in a good way, that is), Lindsey Buckhingham, who takes years to relentlessly edit his work... wouldn't he have taken the time to go back and make sure that the error was fixed? Obviously he doesn't care, and Stevie doesn't, so why should we? I think we need to get over it. Let it go...

I don't think people are having a problem admitting that she made a gramatical error. I mean who really gives a crap anyway. She's made more mistakes in her life than the combined mistakes of everyone I know personally.

I think the issue is: Why bother harping on it? Instead of a reacting to the fantastic production of a highly anticipated song for many fans, and its fantastic vocals and instrumentation, it does seem a little silly to nit pick on a gramatical error. I think Stevie's hard core fans will easily admit that she is falible, and that she has indeed made mistakes in her life and career. But they have more of a problem with people who sometimes seem to like to point out each and every or her errors and downfalls, no matter what. Just my opinion.

I'm yet to find out if I actually like those arab arrangements and the weird guitar playing... They remember me to "Caroline" from Tango In The Night. And turning something like somehow the continuation of "Silver Springs", or a response to "Go Your Own Way" into "Caroline" was not what I expected. I liked it, but... not that much. I'm still more fond of "Say You Will" and "Thrown Down".

About the lyrics, I believe they are most likely the same as the demos existing, so nothing new about it. It's a terrific song. Stevie's vocals are also great. I agree about the questioning: did she record the vocal now? If so, congratulations... it's indeed amazing.

The grammar mistake... being a non-English speaker myself, I didn't note it, therefore I didn't pay attention to it originally. So go on discussing about it, you English purists... :p

I think this version lacks a certain punch. I SO wanted the song to kick into high gear at some point, even towards the end. But it doesn't.
Truth be told, this was never one of my favorite demos. To me, this was always an example of a song that had all the right intentions, even the right pathos, but just never delivered in the lyrics (grammatical error or not ;) ). It's obvious she chose the words in the chorus she did in order to get the rhyme, so I doubt it was an error, per se, but a deliberate oversight for the sake of the rhyme.

And perhaps "Mr. Anal" WAS bugged by the error, and that's why he chose to blur that specific lyric in layers of vocals and production! ;) Just a thought...:D

Hi,

Stevie has made a very common error in that she hasn't kept her verbs consistent.

"I should have turned away and ran" might sound OK at first to some people, but let's take out the "turned away" and see what's left: "I should have ran." Obviously that's wrong. Both verbs have to be in that "have" tense to match up. Correct: "I should have turned away and run."

The other mistake is the "can." Again, tense-related problem here. "Should" matches up with "could," not "can." "I should have turned away and run as fast as I could."

I think the reason no one fixed it is because the mistakes, ran/can, are the words that make up the rhyme. Stevie would have had to make a lyrical change- she couldn't have just replaced the words. I guess it was a case of two wrongs making a right, in their eyes. lol

Too bad grammatical errors weren't the only thing wrong with this song.

Stevie and Lindsey seem to be on different paths. She is happy with good solid songs with solid singing...Lindsey wants to weave these strange little ditties all around her songs..and it's not going well together on this one.

I think Christine totally kept that from happening..she was the thread that linked Lindsey and Stevie together sometimes...not all the time. I mean they have a link..but now they are so different musically, I think , that it just sounds like two different styles colliding here....and its overproduced...too slick.

Im not feeling a connection between the two of them on this song, its boring and Im disappointed. I really expected more from such a powerhouse song!

I'll have to listen to this again ...:(

I admit, the glaring grammatical error is starting to bug me too. I don't know if it's because I've been reading this thread, because I am often annoyed by bad grammar (Christy, your Backstreet Boys examples are hilarious:laugh:!!! Those are like nails down a blackboard). But before it was pointed out I didn't notice it in Smile At You because I couldn't make out the words because of the lousy mp3 quality and muffled chorus. Eh, it would have happened sooner or later and I would have fallen out of my chair after hearing it in good quality for the first time . So nothing said here has ruined the song for me. I don't think anything could actually. I still am blown away by how great it is and how much it blew my expactations completely away. I do understand those who miss the "Flyyyyy..." part. But I've been reflecting on this and I love the fact that this song is still so passionate without being enraged. I mean, I LOVE the rage on the angry version, but I don't know if that same young, raw emotion could be re-created now. If you listen to the line "I am older now..." it totally changes the meaning and attitude of the song from that angry version some 20 years ago. And like I said, this one's still got plenty of passion ;).
I agree, EnchantedStorms, nothing could make THAT madhouse look sane.

Allright, I just heard the demo. You guys who miss the old version can't possibly expect Stevie to do what she did then. I was exhausted for Stevie listening to it. She's in her 50's now. They had to change the song a little. She still does an awesome job on the vocal. It's also been updated. It has a very much today sound. Anyway just my humble opinion.

I agree .I'm really glad they did something different with it.Lindsey has always given way more than he has taken when producing and arranging Stevie's songs. The problems on TITN had to do with Stevie's preoccupation with her solo career and a multitude of personal problems and that she was only there for a few days.I think this is the most that they have worked together and cooperated in many ,many years. This song may take some getting used to for some fans but I think after most of the people that don't care for it hear it on a good sound system directly from the CD it will grow on them it sounds like a very intricate production which loses alot in this format.

AMEN! I concur! Plus remember, some songs need to grow on you. To make such an immediate judgement just because it doesn't hit you on the first listen is silly. Look at Tusk! Many fans were dumbfounded and dissapointed when they first heard it. All these years later, it's considered a masterpiece by many.

Also, unless you're a credible music producer, I prefer not to read such adament dismissive comments on what "you" think would have made the song better for YOU! Everyone has different expectations, or no expectations at all. I have the latter, and full acceptance of what they give us.

It's more to do with wanting to see them perform that version live, for me.

After eagerly anticipating the official debut of one of Stevie's best compositions to date, I am bitterly disappointed in the new version of "Smile At You"... and I must say the blame rests squarely on Lindsey's shoulders.
I have heard countless demos of this song over the years and even though there were many lyrical and musical variations along the way, every version rang true in terms of intensity without sacrificing the melody... until now.
I have long embraced inventive production techniques and all manner of studio experimentation, but I would liken Lindsey's bastardisation of "Smile" to that of the reckless arrangement foisted upon TITN's "Welcome To The Room Sara". Whilst definitely not one of Stevie's greatest moments, the original demo of "WTTRS" possessed a certain degree of fluidity and charm, but both were unceremoniously eradicated from the released version. However, that farcical intervention could never have prepared me for the ill treatment bestowed upon such a classic as "Smile At You" during this warm and fuzzy 2003 phase of the Mac.
I must also say that even though Stevie is in fine voice, I do believe she could do better. I guess she was constrained by the somewhat lacklusture, anticlimactic arrangement of the chorus but she does sound rather out of her depth... at times listless and then at others, straining beyond all reason for next to no result.
Needless to say, this is one track I know I'll be skipping when the album is released. What a ****ing waste!
I should also point out that the original demo of "Smile At You" dating back to January 1977 did contain the line "I should have turned around and ran" and yes it has always bothered me as well. I much preferred the alternate take of "Fly away... to your castles in the sky" and can not believe it has been relegated to the cutting room floor for this incarnation. Oh the shame of it all!

although "Smile at You" has it's moments - i do love Stevie's voice and the guitar at the end - overall, I'm disappointed with this track.. I've enjoyed all the other clips - especially "What's the World Coming To?" (the clip ends just as this song is clicking into high gear) and "Thrown Down" (Lindsey did an outstanding job with this one - at least from what I can tell from the clip).

But, "Smile at You" is just not doing it for me.. i'll keep listening..but I expected something different, and better. I especially don't like the chorus.. too busy..maybe it's just the poor quality file.. i don't know.. this new version just isn't doing much for me... i'm just not connecting with this one..

It`s always hard to hear a song in a new version. The same discussion as with Peacekeeper. I heard the two Peacekeeper versions, the original one and the FM one at the same day and just liked the LB version better, although the album version is a good song too in my opinion.
Yesterday I heard Smile at you the first time in the new album version. After that I listened to the Stevie demo the first time also. To me the Stevie demo is lacking of a chorus and really boring. Just Monotonous. But: it`s just a demo and this because of good reasons as I think. Now it`s been changed from a demo raw form into an album version and I think it`s a great song. To me the LB chorus fits very good and makes the song exciting. Great voice sounding. And yes it has paralleles to Welcome to the room Sara, which I also liked because of LB`s chorus parts. And I also see a connection to Caroline. But I wouldn`t call it a typical 80`s song. So it seems the perception of this track is pretty different on the board.

The grammar thing... I`m not too sure about it- perhaps he sings something different, which can`t be heard due to the quality of the mp3. I'll wait for the booklet to read what is really meant  If it's wrong- yeah that's a bit tacky then...

After the first snippets of the album made me think, it would be very mainstream softpop orientated, I know think it's going to be a good mix. There are still Red rover, Come, Murrow and Say goodbye- now Smile at you and who knows about the other ones we didn't hear of up until now. And this is very promising.

I'm going to help you out here. First, take a look at the rules of this board. Calling someone "obnoxious" and a host of other epithets might just get you in trouble here. Some of us found that out the hard way. Also, I wonder if we weren't having a debate from behind the safety of our keyboards if you would call me "obnoxious" to my face. Just wondering.

Secondly, I didn't come here to impress you. For you to think anyone came here to do that shows a level of self-centeredness unmatched so far on these boards. Furthermore, if my pointing out a grammatical error comes across to you as "something to make" myself sound superior, then that must mean it made you feel inferior and that's an issue you need to deal with yourself. I can't help you there.

You love Smile at You. I'am happy for you.

Calling me a downer is almost a compliment, considering what I've been called on these boards before.

Just listened to "Smile at You" (a few times)- and I must say, It sure is refreshing to see them make a left turn w/ this very old and infamous demo.
This will be the "Gold Dust Woman" or "SOTM" on the new CD! With the lyrics and vocal delivery tinged w/bitterness and betrayal, ...while Lindsey builds a mystery musically, Stevie moans and coo's on the crecendo like chorus- sounding pissed off angry and hurt all in the same breath....This is musical theatre, and what Fleetwood Mac does best.

Some people are just too attached to the old demo...so it's easy to see why they do not like the new "Smile at You 2003". But I for one am happy they did not re-do it like the old version....after all why would they...It never made an official CD release till now for a reason.,....The old chorus....which they've now regulated to the bridge, was too, for lack of a better word, clunky. And it did not flow effectively from the verses.....I tend to think the over-whelming passion Stevie conveyed in the demo and Lindey's screaming guitar is really why people treasured the old demo...it was like a mini concert revival of rhiannon-wrapped up with a new red bow.

So its not the "rocker" some people were holding out for- but this song is still chock full of anger and this new arrangement, to me really allows you to be mesmerized with Stevie's vocals and focus on the lyrics unencumbered. I'm also happy to see that the plodding cathedral piano is gone.

And besides...I'm still knocked out after all these years....at this stage in their careers, we are seeing this calibre of song and perfomance...It really blows my mind. 1st TISL and now SYW...If they never record again I would be content.

If it couldn't have been given the proper treatment then there are a lot of other songs in the vault that could have been done. The song loses it's integrity without the angry vocal. This is like Smile At You on Prozac.

Well, I'm going to add my voice to the side who likes the new version of "Smile at You." Hearing such a strong vocal from Stevie was a pleasant surprise, and I like what Lindsey did with the song. It's good to see them stretching themselves, and not being afraid to try something different.

To add a little levity to this, when I read your comment, I immediately thought of the part in Mel Brooks' "History of the World, Part I" where Moses walks down the mountain after speaking with God; he is carrying three stone tablets. He says unto the people and in a very loud and prophetic voice: "The Lord gave me these 15 . . . " then he accidently drops a tablet, looks down and sees it is destroyed, pauses, and continues with "these TEN, TEN commandments!!"

After reading all of these posts, it's just amazing to me how passionate Mac fans all are.
Some people reacted with pleasure, some with such anger. But some posts are very hateful. Why can't we just enjoy the wonderful music.
Who ever thought we would be in this place again with a new C.D
I'm glad for the new music and freshness it brings.
Do we have to lower ourselves to name calling and vulgar language. I think not.
Lets just enjoy the mac as long as we have them.
We may never hear from them again.
Mick did say that Lindsey stretched the envelope some.
Maybe this was the song.

Great thoughts, Alison. Thank you.

You know, hearing all these complaints about how this version isn't like earlier versions and so on, when the album finally comes out we'll hear someone complain that they took "AOL First Listen" out of the start of the song. . .

:D

I can completely understand those who are disappointed by the new arrangement, but as someone who has listened to the old outtake versions dozens of times, I always thought there was an even better song waiting to get out.
I'm glad they did something different with it, and approached the entire song in a more structured fashion.

I really wouldn't want the band to approach a song the exact same way they approached it 20+ years ago. In fact, I wasn't as excited as so many other people were when we learned it would be included, because I sort of expected it to sound like it always has.
So I'm thrilled they did something fresh.

Having said that, I would have liked if they had done something a little more dramatic with the ending. They sort of missed the boat there. But that's just a minor quibble for me.

Now I'm even more excited to hear "Running Through The Garden"!

And The Tower! (If that really is Goodbye Baby) If Stevie sings that one in the same key she did on the demo, like she did for Smile At You, I think I'll die!

It took me probably three listens before it dawned on me that rather than lead guitar, this song basically has lead bass! Very cool for John. How many other Mac songs do that?

Les, you are dead on about that. Throughout the whole song, the bass holds the melody, while the guitars drone on, providing the relentless licks. It's part of what makes this an especially interesting arrangement. I do believe using the bass for the melody is unprecedented in a Fleetwood Mac lineup that includes Lindsey.

OK...I caved on this one. But that's it.

At first, I was couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. But then I thought about it, and I think that if I had never heard the demo version, I would LOVE this song...its so different, so eerie. I think I'm a little disappointed that it is so different from the demo, but I must say I do love the new changes.

And as for the grammatical thing, to ME, it kinda sounds like Lindsey is singing at certain parts:

"I should have turned away and ran just as fast as I CAME"

Smile At You has always been my very favorite demo... and like everyone else here, I did backflips when I heard it was to be included on the new album. The first time I listened to this new version I was like -> and not in the good way  . It was just so far from what I knew and loved.

But I changed my way of approaching the song and listened to it a second time. It BLEW ME AWAY the second time. I just keep saying over and over that I'm *SO* glad they didn't do something conventional with this song. It's too good to be relegated to plain vanilla cladding. I think Lindsey is a genius to be able to revive this classic demo into something entirely new... he didn't give it a retro flavor... he looked at it as a new product... and what we get is this breathtaking finished product. This proves to me that FM is indeed still a force to be reckoned with in music. Long live FM!!! :D

I just don't like the way Stevie sings this...sounds like she beamed in from the Rock A Little or Other Side Of The Mirror sessions. But, the background instrumentation kicks butt. "John, you're a monster!" ** The overall production, sounds very TISL, though...as if it is the missing link between "Bombay Sapphires" & "That Makes Me Stronger".

**= as far as "lead bass'...listen CLOSELY...John has played that way for a long time:

Black Magic Woman
Station Man
Tell Me All The Things You Do
Bare Trees
Child Of Mine
Miles Away
Revelation
Bermuda Triangle
Blue Letter
Go Your Own Way
You Make Loving Fun
among others

I can't wait to hear this in optimum quality sound.

That being said, I too was taken aback by the arrangement. I always loved the fire of the original vocals, even though I found the phrasing of that chorus clunky and awkward. I like the way it is now used as a bridge.

Verb tense and pronoun usage have always been two of my pet peeves. This is hardly the first time I have thought that Miss Nicks could have reworked her phrasing to be grammatically correct without sacrificing the melody or the emotional impact. I am with the esteemed CarneVaca on this one. I was an English major and my training still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when certain rules are broken. But Stevie just opens her mouth and sings, and I generally forgive the most grievous grammatical sins.

The vocal is pretty powerful, though it does sound shot through a tunnel of ether and fog. The overall feeling of the song to me now is that of a cloudy, painful recollection. The guitar part in particular is lending a tone of yearning and regret that I didn't get in the famous "angry" demo. To give the band credit, I am impressed the tone of the song changed. The demo now sounds to me like one of those horrible, invective laden letters we all have written to a lover who really screwed us over. The new version is from a wiser, more detached person who is reflectiing on a long gone event. It only makes sense. I'm happy to have both versions. Ultimately, the vocal is impressive. We all know Homegirl can wail when she wants to. But it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to blow the roof off in a studio if you can't reproduce it every night on tour. I think she knows what she's doing.

Overall, it's a thought provoking version. It will be different yet again when heard in context with the entire record and on a top notch system.

"sounds like she beamed in from the Rock A Little or Other Side Of The Mirror sessions. " and this is bad??

you totally cracked me up with that one chilid!!!

if you are right, then I'm glad to know that Lindsey now is truly respecting Stevie's take on her own music and is using that newfound respect as well as his own production wizardry to make one of Stevie's best demos into a great new song

but I have to agree that the boyz did a great job!! the rhythms (excuse my spelling, I'm not getting up and get my dictionary ;) ) are jolly splendid!!

LOL - I was totally thinking the same thing this morning on the way to work as I was jamming to Gypsy and the The Chain. Albeit not on lead, but John's bass is so present in those songs, especially in the beginning of Gypsy and the middle of The Chain. Same thing for Dreams. It seems like it was not until the pop hits of TITN and later that the bass became less noticeable, etc. I am glad they are back as the bass is incredible in Smile at You!!!

First of all, if I'd never heard the demos, I'd really like this song. And I still do, on the merits of the different song it is. Flaming days are over. The music here, especially in the chorus, is magic.

I couldn't believe so much was being made of some sort of grammatical error. I certainly wouldn't be as pedantic to let such a thing ruin a piece of music.

..Then I heard what you were all referring to. I hadn't been able to hear the chorus very well and thought it said something like 'I should have turned away and prayed, as fast as I came'.

The line 'I should have turned away and ran, just as fast as I can' is not just a grammatical slip-up... it's verging on nonsense! I still am not sure those are the words because US English 'aint' that off-course, or so I thought. I was watching MASH the other day and Hawkeye was blabbing on about 'Write so and so' (apparently meaning 'write to so and so??!!) .... What's going on here?

Beyond the question of who is responsible for writing it, the ball eventually lands in Lindsey's park - how could he commit this to tape - unless the whole idea is that the character in Smile At You is ...simple, or something, which I doubt.

It would have been soooo easy to change it to something in English, such as:

"I should have turned away that day
"Just as fast as I came"

I'm not saying those are very good lyrics, but at least they obey some of the more basic prinicples of English language.

This is the sort of thing you'd expect from a Eurovision entry - Shame on Stevie and Lindsey!!

But - becuase it's so panned and vague, I only heard it becuase you guys pointed it out, so the song is still good!
