~~~Hi all...I just listened to Peacekeeper again. I love the song and the Stevie/Lindsey harmonies. But I found myself humming Paul Simon's Kodachrome along to it. Does anyone else hear the similarity in sound?
Sorry guys,
I know Kodachrome really well since I'm a big Paul Simon fan, and I've warn out the Peacekeeper clip sooooo much that I feel like I know that one really well now too. And I just don't hear the similarity. Maybe it's me. I'll keep listening for it though.
Well, someone in my office who heard it for the first time from across the hall while I was playing it, said "Is Paul Simon suing Fleetwood Mac for stealing his song?" And he had no idea about this thread going already...
Yeah, I hear the similarity in the chorus, but it's NOT exactly the same melody!! :distress: If Paul Simon sues over THIS, he needs to find something better to do apparently. :rolleyes:
I think that people who listen to all kinds of music, like Lindsey does I'm sure, have certain melodies in their subconscious. I don't believe he would EVER rip another artist off on purpose!!
I really don't hear a staggering similarity myself.
It's definitely not as blatant as "My Sweet Lord..."
There is a similarity with Kodachrome in the chorus, but they are not exactly the same. Not by a long stretch. Suffice it to say that the Peacekeeper chorus, and the whole song for that manner, kicks off in a minor key, whereas the chorus of Kodachrome starts with a seventh chord. The similarity is undeniable in the first line of the chorus, but it's more of a feel thing than intentional copycatting.
I had to laugh when I read this and compared the two, which are pretty similar but not the same, etc. I then immediately thought of LB in the Rumors video thing talking about Second Hand News and how he just might have heard the Bee Gee's Jive Talking. that LB is up to his old tricks again!!!! :) :D
Lindsey says unabashedly that he took the beat from Jive Talking for Second Hand News. But I doubt too many people would have made the connection if he had not mentioned it. He's also found inspiration in Bach, Radiohead, the Beach Boys and the Talking Heads, to name a few. At least he's eclectic.
I heard it on the radio going home from work and I immediately thought Kodachrome. Just a wee bit in there.
Amen to that Carne (and hello).
I love that LB is eclectic (think Make Me a Mask!!!!). Chris was so brilliantly mainstream. As for Stevie - well, I am one who loves her simple, stark, little piano demos from the 70's. However, it clearly took LB to make those very simple demos into a "mainstream" product and still maintain their sublime feel (Dreams, Silver Springs, Sara come to mind). Interestingly, in my opinion, SN was never able to get this feel solo. She even sort of said as much when she was saying how her solo sound is purposefully very different from FM (except perhaps on Outside the Rain which she says isn't). So, many kudos for LB in this dept. and, perhaps more importantly, in his ability to adapt to the times while maintaining integrity and dealing with FM craziness, etc., no matter he arrived at his ideas. ;)
I love that about him too!! I love all kinds of music too and that's ONE of many things that draws me to Lindsey. Make Me a Mask is GREATNESS!!
I also agree that Stevie's solo stuff is not near as good as her FM stuff. Lindsey and his magic touch. Hehehe ;)
I share the sentiment about Stevie's solo work, but I will forever insist that Bella Donna is a brilliant record. And the Wild Heart ain't bad either.
I totally agree and also love most if not all of Stevie's solo work.
What I was saying in my previous post was her solo work is so radically different in a good way - almost straight forward ? - by her own admission from her FM work, which I find far more sublime and, if you will, mysterious (think Sisters of the Moon, Sara, Gold Dust Woman, etc.). I think that is where LB shows his genius perhaps most!!!!!
