View Full Version : Want more new material or old material on the tour?

How much of the new concert setlist do you want to be new material?
My wish list would be about half new stuff, half classics. I wouldn't even mind if it were more than half new stuff...though that's probably not likely. They're gonna have to cut some of the standards, which I won't mind, (unless they cut I'm So Afraid, Big Love or Gypsy...then I'll be pissed) and hopefully include some BN stuff. I honestly won't miss Dreams or Go Your Own Way if it means they'll do Frozen Love or Angel or Don't Let Me Down Again.
I was thrilled when Stevie put plenty of new TISL songs on the tour....
Everyday, Planets, Bombay Saphires, Fall From Grace, Sorcerer, AND Too Far From Texas. And to be perfectly honest, I really didn't go to hear Rhiannon or Gold Dust Woman. I know they are her songs, but I prefer she save those for the Mac shows and do more of the solo hits instead on a solo tour. JMO.
The reason I want it to be new stuff heavy on this tour is not because I'm sick of the old stuff (I'm not), but because I think their voices are more suited to the new stuff and it'll be more fresh and exciting. What do you think?

90%. Seriously, I'd love to hear them do the entire new album and a few of the classics. It will never happen, I know, and most of the audience would hate it, but I would be in heaven.

I feel pretty much the same. I still love I'm So Afraid, Gold Dust Woman, Go Your Own Way...but after years of bootlegs, I'm ready to hear something different.
I do understand why the band feels like they have to play the same old setlist. Joe Blow - who, right now probably doesn't even know that they have a new CD coming out - will decide to take the wife to see Fleetwood Mac when he reads in the paper that they are coming to town. He doesn't want to hear Frozen Love or Peacekeeper or Tango In The Night. He wants to hear the stuff he knows and will walk out if he doesn't.
It is too bad they don't do fan concerts, where we pick the setlist. Anybody want to tell The Knight we'll pay $1100 for that? ;)

Well, I hope we don't get more than 2 TISL songs performed.
I hope @least half the new album is being done live, cause I don't want another Dance.
They should start the tour off with "Say You Will" and then kick it into overdrive with "The Chain."

Slap another two or three zeros on the end of that figure and you never know!
I would be incredibly shocked to ever see another concert billed as Fleetwood Mac and not play Go Your Own Way and The Chain. Although that can change, prior to 1997, I would have been shocked to see a FM concert sans "Oh Well."
I would think that this tour will have the war horses, GYOW, The Chain, Dreams, Don't Stop. I wouldn't be surprised however to see Rhiannon dropped, or played infrequently. If I remember correctly, I think in a interview back in '97, Lindsey mentioned something about them putting Gypsy on the CD and not Rhiannon but due to audience reaction to Rhiannon or something, they decided to go with it instead. It was a long time ago, so I might have some facts twisted. They might just decide that it's time to replace Rhiannon with something different, and God-willing that will be SOTM.

Sorry, but that would be the worst mistake to do. The Stones did that on their last tour in Germany. And now who are the fans, that are allowed to vote on the internet? Of course your Joe Blow or our Karl Müller will do. He is 49 and wants to hear Satisfaction, Angie and so on. He was young when this was played and somehow lives musically in the past not regarding new bands, new music, new songs. My neighbour f.e. keeps on playing things from 1971-1983 and I can't stand "Let it be" or others like that on full volume no more... But back to the internet. Everyone voted for this old stuff and so the Stones became their own revival band. 1 or 2 new songs then 2 and a half hours Satisfaction and Co. That was the reason I didn't go there no more after visiting the 89 and 94 tours, where it was different. (94 almost tending towards that direction but still was alright)
So let FM do an internet vote and you'll hear Rhiannon and Gyow in a 2 hour loop.

If the "Say You Will" album is good, and I mean REALLY good, then I wouldn't mind if they gave it the same treatment that Pink Floyd did with Dark Side Of The Moon during their P.U.L.S.E. tour i.e. Do the ENTIRE album live from start to finish, in album order! (As a 1st or 2nd half of a 3 hour concert!) The other half would be all the classics!:)

Personally, I really don't care what "Joe Blow" thinks about the show. FM is so big that they can afford to experiment with the setlist. Of course they'll throw in some hits and older material. But I don't think this is an "either/or" thing. They should do as much of the new material as they are able to reproduce live - if anything just to reel in more fans to the new grooves they've got going. Traditionally, that was the purpose of a tour: to support an album. I don't think too many people are going to be walking out of the concert if they do a bunch of new stuff (or even some slightly obscure stuff). Joe Blow will wait until the end of the show to get his "standards" fix. And if he doesn't, that's his loss, as he's already paid money to see the band. If fact, I could never understand why a person would walk out of a show they paid money to see. You would think they would want to stay until the very end to make sure they don't miss any key songs. And at the prices they'll more than likely be charging, the band can afford to push the envelope a bit and challenge the status quo as to the way things are done. I think the majority of fans will welcome something new and exciting - as long as they play a bunch of hits too.
Then, of course, it wouldn't hurt the band to play a little longer to give the audience the kind of show it really deserves;)
(I know, I've said all this before - but I feel very strongly about this).
Anyway, for more of my thoughts and ranting on "Joe Blow" (i.e. "the casual music listener"), check out what I said in the "album length and listenability" thread here.

I think I care more about how the band plays all this stuff. I would prefer they didn't use all the backup vocalists & guitarists & keyboardists & percussionists; it tends to sort of bland things out. The Fleetwood Mac performances I've been most excited about in the past have been anything but prettied up. I'm in a Mac cover band now that's actually going to wind up sounding very rough indeed, instrumentally--like the "Patron Saints" album (almost).

depending on how good the album is (i haven't heard any of it yet) i want to hear a few songs. i would say more, but because i've never been to a FM concert, i want to be able to experience the classics, like the chain, gold dust woman, gyow, etc.

That reminds me of the TISL show I went to in Hartford,CT. I was standing in line at the TISL merchandise stand and a lady that was looking at the T-shirts said to her friend: "Trouble in what? What does that say??" Her friend said "Oh, I don't know". So neither one of them even knew the name of Stevie's Cd never mind the songs. I wanted to turn around and "HELLO it is the name of her NEW CD!" I did not do this, however.

I don't care if they play new OR old material, as long as they play DIFFERENT material than they've played the last 25+ years.
Play Buckingham Nicks tunes, play stuff that hasn't been played on stage before, play tunes that people don't EXPECT to be played. Just (Please GOD) don't play the same worn out set.
Personally, I don't give a f*** if someone hasn't seen them before and wants to hear the hits, I'M sick of "the hits"...they bore me...I want to be entertained not bored...especially for the price I fear the tickets will be.
If I hear they're playing the same ol'/same ol', I'll pass this tour (for the first time in 30 years)

Since this might be the last BIG FM tour ever, I really think they should take this as an opportunity to give a gift of songs that either need to see the light of day again or have never been performed live.
SCREW THE HITS!!! I certainly don't need to hear "Rhiannon" for the billionth time.
To hear Stevie sing "Storms", "Races Are Run" or "Crystal" live would definitely do it for me!!!

Amen The Tower! Someone who agrees with me. Put Dreams to rest! Rhiannon is getting pretty green around the giles too. She has plenty of other classics that she hasn't performed in years...not to mention great songs she has never perfomed...not to mention she seems to have a lot of confidence in her new songs...hope she's not afraid to play them!! Lots of other possibilities to make everyone forget Dreams and other overplayed, should-be-out-to-pasture songs.
Sarah

I can agree with euthanizing Dreams.. k, number 1.. we got it.. move on.
As for the rest.. I really don't have an opinion.. I like it all. BUT, I will be sad if I don't get to hear Go Your Own Way.. as it is my FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME.
I wouldn't mind being able to sing along for a lot of the concert.. but I do want to hear some new. I, too, am hoping that they'll revive some old skool stuff. I'd love to hear some BN live!!
UH UH on a bunch of TISL.. it had its own damn tour already. I love Stevie and I love TISL.. but I want Mac this time 'round.

I agree ax Dreams. I have seen it over 20 times live and really do not care for the way she sings it these days. While were at it LB should boot GYOW. I hated the slowed down version on The Dance and he screamed it. I am sure I will get flamed for that one - but that is my opinion. Same goes for The Chain (bored of it and LB screams on it).
Now let's talk about World Turning. I hate Micks cr#p in it; he should instead charge for people to flock to see it on his website. I can hear the stampede now;) . It takes like 20 minutes where four other songs could be. Finally, and most importantly, Chris is not there.
Instead, I would add Walk a Thin Line, Storms, That's Alright, Sara, TITN, I Don't Want to Know, Django/Races are Run, Crying in the Night, Eyes of the World, etc.
But, I understand they (and most of the paying public) do not want a concert set of songs they do not like to sing live (Sara) or songs that none oter than us :D has ever really heard or can relate to on some level.
So, I am sure all the standards will be there. Worse things could happen I guess!!!:wavey:

Did I mention Blue Letter;)
Oh no no no no no....if I finally get to see the Mac live, I *must* hear LB do GYOW!!!!! It is positively my favorite! Although, I say the same thing about Rhiannon, that it shouldbe booted, and I am sure there are Rhiannon-freaks out there that enjoy the song just as much as I do GYOW, no matter how it sounds.

LMAO!! You are right in saying you can't please everyone. We ALL wanna cut certain songs and leave in others.
I have ONE request...ISA!!!!!! If they do NOTHING else I want, THAT must STAY!!!!!!!!!! MY FAVE SONG EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say this, and I'm a Lindsey fan ya'll (LOL), GYOW, yeah, not my fave song, live. I prefer it on Rumours, along with Dreams and Gypsy from Mirage. I do NOT think any of these songs are that great live, they are MAGICAL on their respective albums tho. PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm pretty open to the setlist, I mean, sure I am DYING to hear Tango in the Night, Frozen Love, RED ROVER (!!!!), Come, TWISTED (!), SOTM, Beautiful Child, Big Love...I could go on and on, but as long as I hear ISA, my life is COMPLETE!!!!

OH YEAH!! I would love to hear "Frozen Love" and "Don't Let Me Down Again", both of which I think would be excellent live songs! How can they NOT play something from BN??
As far as the standards go - I think there are alot of standards that will fall by the wayside because of Christine's absence (Say You Love Me, etc.), but if I had to pick one of the standards to delete from the setlist I could do without "World Turning" - that whole drum freak out that Mick does just irritates me (especially on the Mirage concert video - I can't even watch that song anymore!).
My concern is that they will have Sheryl Crow fill in for Christine on her songs, and that will not make me very happy! I have no problem with Sheryl on Stevie's TISL, but she should stay separate from the Mac (I swear that is her doing backing vocals on the Peacekeeper MP3 . . . ugh).
I do love GYOW and The Chain, but NOT the way Lindsey sang them on The Dance tour. I agree with strandinthewind - hated Lindsey screaming GYOW - his voice was all over the place!! His voice just didn't sound like it was strong enough . . . JMO.
My favorites for the tour? Silver Springs, Storms, Blue Letter, Eyes of the World and Landslide - also anything from BN.
I think "Rhiannon" will always be in the setlist because of its significance - almost "too classic" to ever do without it. I think it has evolved better over time than "Dreams", which is getting kind of tired in my opinion.
PenguinHead
03-02-2003, 02:33 PM
I find all the speculation, expectations, fears, demands, and wishful thinking here to be hilarious. I think it's highly unlikely that Sheryl Crow is going to perform with them to "fill in for Christine." The rumour that she was joining the band was just that...and a bizzare one at that. Let it go.
However, Sheryl is known for her many guest appearances...so it wouldn't be surprising to for her to pop up here and there. Stevie and Lindsey have plenty of songs to make for a satisfying concert. Why is there so much concern over which Christine songs will be played? It's a different band now!! Time to move on.
I can see them playing Don't Stop though, or some other appropriate song, as an acknowledgement of her contributions to the band...but having someone else sing her songs would make the band seem more like a lounge act. And the cringe factor would be high --- much like it was when I saw Bekka singing Say You Love Me and Gold Dust Woman.
I'm in total agreement with all of strandinthewind's comments - I hope your words are prophetic.

No new ****! When you go see an old band, it's to hear old songs. I often get frustrated seeing old bands because I realize that they have songs in their catalog way beyond their classic periods that they have to play now.
Yes has done the smart thing in recent years by not playing much of anything that came out after 1975. On the last tour they did 2 new songs, and one from 1978 and that was as new as it got. No "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" or anything from the 80's. Nothing from the multitude of albums they've released from the early 80's on. Now that's how an old band makes a setlist.
Aerosmith tours now and plays junk like Cryin', Jaded, Pink, Fallin' In Love, etc. and all kinds of new stupid ****. The ideal Aerosmith show would be to make a setlist of nothing but stuff from the first album up to Night In The Ruts, with a couple of the good ones from Permanant Vacation and Pump.
If they wanna do ballads, they should do good ones like Home Tonight or You See Me Cryin'!
Fleetwood Mac just couldn't make a good album after Mirage. They could still make some good songs but no album I'd care to hear a lot of. The best of the Tango through SYW stuff pales in comparison to the best of the classic period(s) of the band. Personally I'd love to see them dig deep into the Welch period and do a couple of the PGreen era songs as well as doing the best stuff from the B/N period, and not necessarily the hits or radio songs. Unfortunately they would have to have Christine in the band for this, which is another reason I'm not making any kind of effort to see this show.

This time I have a vested interest in this because I am actually going to get off my aging butt and go see a show this summer.
Here's what I want:
What Makes You Think You're the One (enough with The Chain!)
Don't Let Me Down Again
Rhiannon (They're gonna do it anyway, so get it out of the way)
Illume (They could pull this off live nicely)
Eyes of the World
Thrown Down
Sara
What's the World Coming To
I'm So Afraid
Gypsy
Save Me a Place
Beautiful Child
Big Love
Say Goodbye
Shuffle Riff (That's right, play something "new")
Steal Your Heart Away
Say You Will
Sisters of the Moon
Black Magic Woman (Has Lindsey ever done this?)
Go Your Own Way
Don't Stop
Tusk
I Don't Wanna Know
Goodbye Baby

I don't like "Don't Stop" when the Fleetwood Mac "Army" (tm ChiliD) turns what used to be a burning blues shuffle into a lethargic & lumbering anthem. (To me it's just amazing that none of the other superior keyboardists like Dave Thoma or Brett Tuggle are able to play that tune with the punchy spice that the relatively inferior Christine McVie tosses off so easily.)
I could actually live without "The Chain" at this point, too, since it no longer gets very fired up. As for "Gypsy," it goes in my left ear & out my right. Or vice versa.
On the other hand, these are some of Fleetwood Mac's most beloved concert songs, so it's rather idiotic to believe the band shouldn't or wouldn't want to do them. Essentially, we're stuck with them.

Count me as another one who thought this was a new thread! I just assumed the conversation was about the upcoming tour dates.
ANYWAY, also count me as another one who would love to hear old stuff -- but not the SAME old stuff. There's so much great old stuff they could bring out that people love and aren't sick of. Hey, it worked out well on The Dance: "Silver Springs is a great old song."
You also have to count me as another one that has a favorite old song that they do want to hear: Landslide (minus the act that accompanied it on last year's tour).
But I'll take whatever I get :)
