I was just reading the lyrics of "Real Tears" on the Lyrics Page of The Nicks Fix and am wondering about the accuracy of a couple of lines:

Where it says "Very little love exists through the rain and the fog/In her always hanging mirror", I thought it actually said "In her always hanging mist". Apart from sounding distinctly like the latter, I would have thought that "mist" was more in context with the preceding line.

Also, with regard to the line "Take a tear of a rose and push it into your hands", I thought this said "Take a tribal rose and push it into your hand". Apart from "tear of a rose" not making any sense, there is one syllable too many to fit into that line.

Any thoughts?

You are right that the line is "In her always hanging mist". I don't hear "mirror" at all.

"Take a tear of a rose" is what Stevie says. She says the line quickly. As for it not making sense, well, that's our Stevie! :D

The lyrics may have been originally printed somewhere with "hanging mirror" and that is what the Nicksfix used when placing them online. I've noticed this with the lyrics to Mirror Mirror. The Nicksfix lists the "then there are the things, misunderstandings" verse at the end of the song. This verse is not on the b-side. You have to listen to a demo/outtake to get that verse.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Jennifer! I still think that "tear of a rose" is rather odd - talk about esoteric!

It definitely is one of Stevie's "hmmm, wonder what's up with that" lyrics!

I always thought she said "thorn of a rose"-isn't that about the only thing that would make sense?

I always thought it was "take a terrible rose." :D
But yes, Phil, I hear "mist" instead of "mirror."
Have the lyrics to this song ever been officially printed anywhere? Not that I know of. So the version on the NicksFix might just be someone's best guess.

I would imagine the only "official" posting of the lyrics is at the Nicksfix since it's Stevie's official site. There are many fan sites that have them posted though.

ha ha...this reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live sketch...it presented itself as TV advertisement for a Stevie Nicks compilation called "What The Hell Is She Saying?" Her songs would play and the words would scroll down at the bottom of the screen...until it got to questionable phrase and it would scroll ???????? It was hilarious. Does anyone remember seeing that?

I remember seeing Eddie Murphy do his "Buckwheat" schtick for a supossed "Buckwheat sings the hits" kind of similar album skit where he was singing "Lookin' for love" and the song credits said "Wookin pa nub", for "Three times a lady" it said "Fee tines a mady" and when he sang "Bette Davis eyes" it had the "?????" but I sure would have liked to have seen the SN deal on this kind of thing, musta been funny, who was "playing" Stevie? Do you remember?

As for "Real tears" words, it was always more the backgrounders that I couldn't get rather than Stevie. When they sang "her eyes got wide", I could swear originally they were saying "her @$$ got wide" but then I noticed the true words and thought "Oh OK that makes more sense"! :)

I remember the Eddie Murphy "Buckwheat" skit as well. It was always one of my favorites.

If I'm not mistaken I believe the "What the Hell is She Saying" Stevie thing was a radio skit. I have it in MP3 format and none of the voices sound vaguely familiar to me as SNL cast members.

I personally never heard it on the radio but my uncle heard it several times on his local station in Ohio. I found out about the skit thanks to him.
