A warm hello to everyone
My name is Joseph, I live in San Francisco and I've been reading and enjoying The Ledge for awhile and finally decided to register.
I was listening to an old Tom Petty live tape and remembered how much I loved the sound of Stevie's voice on "Insider" and "Needles and Pins", she really sung those songs so wonderfully.I was wondering if there are any Ledgies who love those two songs as well.
As far as live performances go, I loved her voice in that era. I got to see Fleetwood Mac at the LA Forum in December of 1979,and I'll never forget the sound of the band, and Stevie's incredible voice. Amazing!
Take care
Joseph
Hello,
Yes, I love Insider, but I've never heard Needles&Pins. I know, shame on me. LOL.

I am jealous that you saw FM in 1979 I have heard and seen videos of how wonderful the Tusk tour was.

Welcome aboard Somajoseph!!:)
I LOVE Insider and Needls and Pins, especially Insider. Stevie's vocals just soar on this track...beautiful. She is such a fabulous harmony singer (as we all know:)) and this song proves it 100%.

Welcome to The Ledge, Joseph... make yourself at home! :)
Count me in as another fan of "Insider" and "Needles And Pins."
Stevie and Tom sure did sound great together, didn't they?
I'd love for them to duet again.
"And I'm the one who oughta know... yeah, I'm the one you left to rust... Not one of your twisted friends... I'm the one you couldn't love...."

Yes I am really glad I got to see them on the Tusk Tour, I was 16 years old then-LOL. And actually I also made it to one of the final shows, Hollywood Bowl, the next summer. I think it was on August 31st 1980. The set they were playing was great, I really loved hearing the Tusk songs live, especially "Angel" "Sisters of the Moon" "Sara", and Christine's "Over and Over" and "Think About Me". Lindsey's songs from Tusk were not my favorite of his work. I love the title song and actually I think they played "Save Me a Place" during the acoustic set, which was really good. They were playing an extensive set, covering alot of their music, and I cant wait to see them here in the Bay Area for their upcoming tour. I havent really heard anything from the new CD so when it comes out, "Thrown Down" and all those other songs will be brand new to me.
Just a note, was it Ledgie Pip, that made it to Las Vegas? I made it to Stevie's second show there for Trouble In Shangi-La, and finally got close, I was in like the 12th row. It was among Stevie's strongest solo performances that I have ever seen! The only bummer was no "Planets of The Universe" which was one of my favorites. Ok now I'm rambling..LOL

Hi Joseph.....I totally love Insider.....gives me chills.
And yes...it was me who made it to Las Vegas....I was at both nights. I was about 20 rows back on the 2nd night but managed to move alot closer about half way through the show. We were right in front of the sound box to begin with

Hi and welcome! I agree with you. Needles and Pins and Insider (and the live version on Tom Petty's live album) are great examples of Stevie's singing and ability to harmonize. Don't you think her Enchanted compilation would have been that much better if these two songs were included? Also, if you didn't already know, there's a great demo of Stevie and Tom singing his "The Apartment Song" on his box set.

:wavey: Welcome to the ledge! I also love Insider and Needles and Pins. I just think that Stevie sounds so awesome on both of them. She has the best harmonizing voice! Insider is definitely one of my favorite duets! I was at the Vegas shows for the TISL tour too! I agree with you.. it was one of her strongest solo performances and I got to see it from the 2nd row!! I was bummed though that they cut Planets of the Universe too.. it was one of my favorites!

Welcome, Joseph! Stevie's harmonizing skills are truly amazing.
Another one of my fave songs with Tom and Stevie is The Apartment Song, though I don't think they did that one live. Also, the Battle of The Dragon demo with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is soooo cool :D, though they didn't do that live either. I don't blame Stevie for asking Tom to write something for her for TISL. She sings his songs so well (I'm listening to I Need To Know live from Red Rocks, which rocks). Did they do anything else together (besides of course SDMHA, which is awesome live too) or is that it?

-Sonia Hi, Sonia. If you can find someone with the Tom Petty show at Compton Terrace July 30, 1985, he & Stevie sing a bunch of songs, including "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "I Need to Know," "Not Fade Away," "Make It Better," "Spike" & some others.
Why Stevie didn't show up at the Forum show two days later in L.A. is a complete mystery ... & an irritating one to me because I went to the show expecting I'd see Stevie.

I saw the band play at the Forum & at the Bowl, too. Plus I got to head up in your direction for the shows at the Cow Palace. Do you remember that rainbow backdrop in '79? Mac played "Save Me a Place" at those '79 shows, but they replaced it with "Never Going Back Again" at the Hollywood Bowl.

Hi David
That is so cool that you were at those shows! Those were among the first concerts I actually went to, and I was amazed at how many people were there, The Forum and Bowl are pretty huge. I do remember the rainbow backdrop from the show at the Bowl, my seats were alot closer at that show.
I didnt live in San Francisco in 79, but I did have a ticket for one of those Cow Palace shows, but I didnt make it.I also got to see them on the Mirage tour at the Oakland Coliseum in 82, and Behind the Mask at Shoreline in 90. I saw both shows on the Dance Tour at Shoreline too,it's nice to see them there because Stevie and Lindsey always comment on how that is where it all started for them, down in the south bay.

Hi Joseph! Welcome to Ledge...I agree about Stevie and Tom's vocals togther...totally amazing :) I'm so jealous you got to see them on the Tusk Tour...I was like 2 months from being born at that time,lol...
I recently downloaded the video for Insider. I've never seen it before or knew that it existed. It's set up in like a studio a la Stop Draggin'. In fact, it might have been filmed at the same time, that's how similar the two are. But, I'm not sure when Hard Promises was released, so it might not have been at the same time. Anyone have more information on this?

I got to see Tom Petty in Boston in August 1981. I went because Stevie was going to be a special guest. I sat with their backs to me, but I did not mind it. It was an awesome show and Stevie had on a short black dress with a red belt around it. Very cool.

Another rare Stevie and Tom live performance: Tom made a guest appearance at Madison Square Garden in NY during her Wild Heart Tour. They performed an acoustic version of "I Will Run To You." I think that was the only time the song was performed live. Of course, he stayed to sing "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" too.
Also, I also have a (crappy sounding) recording of Stevie at a Tom Petty concert singing "Wild Thing" with him. She sounds so great belting out "WILD THING!" Too bad the quality of the recording isn't better. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

We should try to compile a list of all the times Stevie & Tom have sung together onstage.
They appeared together a lot in 1981, including Los Angeles Forum (where "Needles & Pins" & "Insider" were recorded for Tom's live album), Irvine Meadows (September 18), San Francisco Cow Palace (June 26), Boston (August, Pattie?)
Final Sydney Australia show with Dylan & Petty (Feb 25, 1986--but some Dylan fans say she also performed with them on Feb 12 at the same venue. Other Dylan fans say Stevie played guitar & sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" on Feb 11)
Stevie show at Radio City (September 13, 1983)
Tom Petty concert in Tempe (July 30, 1985)
Mulholland Tomorrow concert in L.A. (September 17, 1985)
Sanctuary concert in Phoenix (September 19, 1985)
Silent Night at the White House (December 14, 2000)
Concert for Artists' Rights at the L.A. Forum (Feb 2002)
According to Bob Dylan fans, two of the Sydney 1986 shows on the Dylan/Petty tour were recorded for Westwood One. Anybody ever hear a radio broadcast of the show? It's supposed to have many of the songs with Stevie (Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Like a Rolling Stone, Blowin' in the Wind).
There's also supposed to be a jam with Dylan & Petty & Stevie at the Park Royal Hotel in Wellington, New Zealand, Feb 6, 1986. They sing "Trying to Get to You."
Plus, there are "Band of the Hand" recording sessions on tape from Feb 9-10, 1986, at the Festival Studios in Sydney. Apparently, this part wasn't included in the movie.
Finally, Stevie sang "I Shall Be Released" at the Bob Dylan concert at the Phoenix Symphony Hall on November 9, 1995. Did Petty sing, too?
I don't know where that tape of "Wild Thing" comes from that we all have. Maybe the Petty fans know.

I have an mp3 that I downloaded off of Kazaa of Blowin' in the Wind that says it's from 2-11-86. It's not of great quality, but you can clearly hear Stevie singing. I'd love to be able to hear the whole show.
And what about The Apartment Song? That song cracks me up! I love it.
