Does anyone else think that avril's songwriting style is somewhat
the same as stevie's??? I may be alone in this but when i found
out that avril writes her own songs i listened to her cd and i was
really impressed at how good she is at it. she writes from her
own personal expearinces as stevie does. and the lyrics are
very strong and your very much drawn to them....just like
stevie's lyrics. so i guess only time will tell.

She writes them all by herself?? I thought she had people helping her...well if she does, good for her...her songs are pretty decent..."I'm with you" is a really great song...I don't think anyone can match Stevie in terms of the way she writes..but i think the most admirable thing is to write from your heart,uninhibited...

I like Avril and I think it's great she writes her own stuff. I don't find her writing style like Stevie's at all though JMO

How can you compare a song like "SK8TR BOI" (or however the hell she spells it) to Stevie's writing??!!??? I mean I will concede that the girl has some talent, but let's see if she'll be around in 30 years with the stuff she writes. Highly unlikely IMO.

Avril does do some writing, but most of her album was CO-written.....and I do not really see the connection between the two. I do like Avril's album. But, I tend to think that vocally she sounds a lot like ALANIS......and I do not see a Stevie connection.

I also thought Avril sounded like Alanis, especially in I'M WITH YOU...which is a song I love....but i dont see a connection in Stevie's and Avvrils style, but Avril is doing better than most pop stars out there....nor do I see a connection in Alanis' and Avrils lyrics..

there arent musical similarities, no..
but the from the heart thing is a connection, i suppose.
i dont think theres a whole lot of that happening lately.. so its kind of refreshing to hear it again.

There is a connection? Avril's lyrics are teen pop to me like Sk8erboi and Complicated. They are about teen life. Stevie's lyrics are mainly mystical and dark with a much more adult theme. I like Avril, but I don't see the connection to Stevie.

Well...seeing as how I'm "anti-avril" I don't see a connection...like other have mentioned before...SkaterBoi and like Storms?? No..I think their writing styles are quite different...especially since Stevie didn't hit it big til her late mid to late 20's and Avril is still a Young'n...they're styles are very different IMO.

The only thing the two have in common is they're both female...in my opinion, anyway.

In mike_nh's defense, I THINK he just meant how they both write about the personal experiences they've had, much unlike some of today's pop artists who simply sit down and write a song that comes out of nowhere, or DON'T write the song but simply PERFORM it as if they had gone through it. My favorite examples are the boy band/pop princess "love" songs, such as "I Drive Myself Crazy" by N'Sync. These are songs written simply to relate to people's knowledge and emotion of "love," and thereby connecting to the listener in a broken way because the singer didn't PERSONALLY experience it. Now I can't say that any members of N'Sync did not have a person who "drove them crazy" when they thought about them, but the point is that's not what they are singing about...they're not speaking from a personal experience, they are simply trying to make a contrived connection to the listener. Now if we look at something like No Doubt's "Hey Baby," it makes a good pop song, but there's something there...it's about what Gwen experiences on the road with all guys and having all the girls go after them and snub her (kind of like how Stevie would say that the girl groupies would be mean to her and Christine but love the men).
Of course, I don't KNOW if Avril has HAD these experiences either, which is why I still have doubts about her. And certainly her music doesn't sound very much like Stevie's. I just think his point was writing about things the songwriter experienced. Of course, I could be wrong...
