The Guitar chords for "Thrown Down"

Joe- I noticed you put the "Peacekeeper" ones on another Thread-, and they sound spot on...
I wish I had your ear..., I thought, I had the TD ones figured out from the demo version, but the re-vamped Fleetwood version sounds like it may be in a different key, esp since Stevie is singing it higher than originally in the demo..
Any guitar players out there that can help?

Hey Christopher -
Hope I can help again. One thing interesting is that whereas Peacekeeper is in G, TD is in E minor, sort of like the 'Go Your Own Way' and 'Songbird' contrast perhaps.

Well it's usual Stevie fare as far as chord changes go (but Lindsey/John has made a change from the TISL outtake demo thing by putting more emphasis on the G to C chord change ["That he could be good for her"]and the notes in between, therefore giving the whole thing a more 'major' feel):p

I won't put the lyrics as guides unless you ask for them cause there's nothing really tricky withthe timing or chord changes and you will hopefully be able to understand my half-assed notation.

VERSE

Em D C D (repeat....ad nauseum)

CHORUS

C D Em

G

(repeat...)

Hope it makes sense and that I haven't missed anything!

Thanks for posting that. Is Em the same as E?

Lift your index off the first fret from the E chord to get an E minor. The other way to do it is to put your index on the fifth string second fret and middle finder on fourth string second fret.

Thanks. When I posted that, I was thinking of E major.(I think that's what it was anyway)

Peacekeeper, as best as I can tell with help from Seteca and DownOnRodeo, goes like this:

Verse:

Em C D (two measures each, repeat)

Chorus:

Em C D G (There's a Gmaj7 passing chord to Em, but you can skip it )
Em Am D Bm

Bridge:

Em C Em (repeat

I think the bridge actually ends on a D, but I'm still working that out.

Yes! Sorry about that - I only 'heard' the Am yesterday (then bizarrely could not find where I posted the notes anyway to mention it!). "With our powers combined..." lol

Hey CV, I just had a listen to it (was away for the weekend so I didn't get a chance till now) and I think ending the bridge by playing the low end of a partial C works quite nicely (e.g. play the standard notes for the E, A and D strings of C then add something yourself for the G and B strings - open strings actually work rather well here I think). I can't hear a D there at all, so I hope we're talking about the same place in the song!:)

..Please can you explain in more simpler terms (for us not so brilliant guitar players) whatever you just said! What the heck are the E, A,and D strings of C? I'm sure the D comes in the chorus just like CV mentioned...It sounds like there should be one there anyway:) it's the stupid Bm, I can't manage on the end... so I just pretend it's not there!

lol....I'm flattered...:o..but I think it's my total incompetence as a guitar player that has caused your confusion...lol!! Thing is I'm totally self taught: I have been playing for 16 years now totally by ear so although I think (if I may say so) I make a pretty damn good lead guitarist, I would most probably totally fail a Grade 1 music theory test....i.e. naming chords blah blah blah...!
Nothing complicated at all about what I said...there is of course the D in the chorus as CarneVaca said, but I don't think the bridge ends on a D. I think it ends on "C rooted" chord. And to play it, all I meant was instead of playing a C chord as

(x = don't play this string)

E-x
A-3
D-2
G-0
B-1
e-0

play it as

E-x
A-3
D-2
G-choose something that sounds right to you.
B-ditto
e-x

I personally found that playing open G and B strings there sounds quite nice and fits quite well, so that would be

[CHORD ONE]

E-x
A-3
D-2
G-0
B-0
e-x

So that's what...? I guess a partial Cmaj7 or C/B chord. But just go through various C rooted chords and mess around with them till it sounds good to you, that's how I do it anyway.

If you're having trouble with Bminor then just play a B5 chord. i.e. the root + 5th combination.

[CHORD TWO]

E-x
A-2
D-4
G-4
B-x
e-x (ok, technically this is meant to be a "2", but nobody ever bothers with it....it defeats the purpose of an "easy chord"!!!)

The B5 works nicely, and besides, you're only playing it for a short while to back-up/replicate the "insane GOS clown laugh" (as I like to call it!) that links back to the Em, so it doesn't really matter that it isn't a full chord.

(Keep working on the Bm...it's a hell of a lot easier than Bmaj anyway!!)

Hope this helped!:)

Seteca, my friend, thank you much. I am going to try that. I was thinking D, but wasn't sure at all. So this should clear it up. Sounds like it might be a Cmaj7, which I might add, is a great-sounding chord.

....I'm afraid you totally lost me after the words "C rooted"!!!! (she says rolling her eyes!) ........NEVER MIND...I'll figure something out myself, thanks anyway though. :D

lol..!...I think I was the first musician in the world to use that phrase....! All I meant is a chord which has C as the root...! I was gonna say a "C-type" but that sounds more like a Mercedes Benz than it does a chord...!!:D I've edited my last post to include labels "One" and "Two"...play "Chord One" to end the bridge and play "Chord Two" instead of the Bm that you're having trouble with.
