View Full Version : What will be the fate of the other new 20 songs not available on the new album??

Hi Macgang,
I was a bit depressed to read that the new Mac album has been edited down to a single cd. :( I must say I was kind of expecting it to happen despite Mick´s statements about it definitely being a double cd set. I can understand this only from the record company´s point of view, in keeping with the double album Tusk release in 1979, they probably didn´t make as much money as they had hoped, after all it was priced $15.98 which was a lot then.
I do hope however that the other (about 20?) songs won´t lie rotting in the vaults of Reprise. You ask yourself how many others are there just waiting to be released from the band´s mid- seventies classic line-up, the idea alone is a mouthwatering prospect! Maybe it is a marketing ploy to see whether the band can still attract mass attention around the world with their new album, then do the world tour and if both are a huge success, then release the second disc in about two years.
What do you fans think of all this?

Hi Adam,
I believe it was posted by David on page 2 and 3 of the thread "Okay post all new FM album related news here"
I haven´t actually read it from official band related sources, but then again these are very sparse with info. I really would have thought the publicity mill would have been spinning madly by now! ;)

A second CD costs pennies, especially since both platters can fit in a single-CD case. I have to again decry this band's lack of fight. Go in there and tell the label it's a f%#@! double CD or nothing!
A lot of bands have inserted bonus CDs into their releases at no extra cost. In some cases, they'll do it for the first 50,000 copies or something like that, giving the diehard fans a chance to get something extra. Do you think Fleetwood Mac, with its track record of "caring" for the fans, will do something like that?

WB/Reprise is probably (and finally) getting their revenge...they're doing what they SHOULD'VE done with "Tusk", but didn't have the leverage to do at the time. Cut it to a single album.
But, this time around, the additional songs have been leaked, we like them (well, 99.9% of them) and WANT them to release a double album. Where's the justice?

There is no justice. Especially if they put all the wrong songs (i.e., Come) in the album.
Sorry, Seteca.

The only thing I'd like to add to this thread, is that... even if this is a single album with only 19 tracks... I don't think anyone ever said that the band has another TWENTY leftover.
The most I'd ever heard, was 23 *total* songs, to be potentially used on the album
Which would only leave 4 tracks as leftovers.
There may be about 22 'Gift Of Screws' tracks, and Stevie may have given the band 17 demos to choose from, but I highly doubt that the band worked on completing all 39 of them.
I'm sure they went thru and chose their favorites from the 'GoS' stuff, and put the finishing touches on them... then chose their favorites from the demos Stevie submitted, and worked on those.
At least that's my assumption.

Hmmm, narrowing Lindsey's stuff down...assuming that it's CLOSE to an even split...giving Lindsey 10 of the 19 tunes.
Here's my guesses as to what Lindsey's tunes will be on the album:
Peacekeeper
Red Rover
Murrow
Down On Rodeo
Gotta Get Away (Stones cover)
Gift Of Screws
Say Goodbye
Try For The Sun
Twist Of Fate
Steal Your Heart Away

Unfortunately, it's just the nature of the internet beast.
People like to talk and gossip.
I think we'd all rather have some officially confirmed information, but for now we can only go by what some of the more credible sources amongst Fleetwood Mac's fans, have told us.
The source for most of the current "info," has proven himself to be a very reliable source over the years. In fact, a lot of folks are more prone to trust what he tells us, than what the media prints... and, so far, he hasn't given us a reason *not* to trust his information.
The absolute latest news (posted by Luke, on Mick's official message board), is that the album is definitely no longer a double-CD, and has been pared down to 16 tracks.
As always though, this is unconfirmed by anyone in an official capacity, and that should be taken into consideration.
Still... whether they pan out or not, these rumours provide a lot of fodder for some very interesting and thought-provoking conversations.
Hopefully though, we'll have some CONFIRMED information very soon, and then we can all talk about THAT. :)

It bugs me that I've seen Come singled out as a bad track a couple of times now on various boards. I'd just like to put my word in to say I think it's one of Lindsey's best. After all, some record exec might be watching and I for one don't want him to think it's a song that could be cut (if it is in line to be on the new album). I think lyrically it is along the lines of Tusk and musically it frickkin rocks.

Yeah, that's so cool! Finally it takes so much pressure from me. I thought I would be forced to listen to 22 songs or 19 songs. What an effort hardly to bear. So glad if it`s just 16 songs. 16 is a great number. Perhaps if we're superlucky it can be worked on to get to 14 or 12. That surely would be much better.
8 would be cool also! No wait- yeah that`s it: a single would be cool. Maybe a three minute track would do it. Who needs complete albums nowadays? I mean I have very little spare time and a lot of hobbies. So 70 minutes of listening to music, c`mon I`m a busy guy. No way. Is also less expensive. Or even letting it be, I mean we could just talk about potential songs they might have done. Who needs the real thing, is there no fantasy left amongst people? Thinking about a potential album that might have come is so much cooler than the real thing. I`d appreciate it a lot! Hope so much they cancel this silly CD plan now!

LOL, Stefan!! That cracked me up!
I do have to say that I'm going to be really disappointed if there is only 16 tracks on this cd. I actually let myself get my hopes up that we were gonna get at least 23-25. Has anyone heard anything about the tour lately? I suppose next we'll hear that it's only going to be across the U.S., not a World tour. :(
Oh, well. At least we're getting an album. I guess I should just be happy about that. Which I am, really. I guess I'm just tired of being told one thing, only to find it being reneged upon later.
Okay....WOO HOOOOO!!!! We're getting a new Fleetwood Mac album!!!!:] :] :] YAYYYYY!!!!!
I feel much better now.

Too bad Mick won't deny/confirm this "rumor" on his "official" chat board~I've seen people begging for news & answers to their questions over there, and they get nothing. Frustrating....

Hey, Stefan, I'm with you: Why bother releasing any new music at all? Hey, why not just release a double CD of retreads and charge 25 bucks for it? Maybe they could call it the Very Best of the Less Better Songs of Fleetwood Mac.
Hey, I hope the label guys come here and read this. Cuz I have a message for them: (hmm... where's that flipping-the-bird smilie?)

I agree...words of wisdom: lower your expectations
I have found this to be very helpful in many aspects of life. If you expect less and get more you'll be pleasantly surprised rather than the opposite which can REALLY stress you out.

Double CD's tend to have a lot of filler tracks.
I'm in the minority here, but i'll be happy with a single CD.

It may seem like a pretty cynical approach, and yet, I'd venture to say I'm far more optimistic than just about anyone you'd meet.
If you don't expect too much from people, or walk around life feeling as if you're owed something, then you're gonna be a much happier person, I'd say.
I feel lucky that Fleetwood Mac is even working together, so I'm not about to place too many stipulations or conditions on whether or not I'm going to enjoy this album.
Yes, I'll admit that the fan in me will be sorely disappointed if this has been widdled down to a mere 16 tracks... and yet, SIXTEEN NEW SONGS is still far more than I ever expected to have from Fleetwood Mac ever again, so I'm still ahead of the game. :)
Also, I have a feeling we're going to hear the remaining tracks one way or another... even if they aren't on the album.

Hell, Mick even said that the whole reason the release was delayed until Spring, was that they decided to put it out as a double-album, and needed the extra time to mix all of the tracks.
I suspect the final decision to release a single disc was a corporate one, but perhaps Fleetwood Mac still has something up their collective sleeves, in regards to the estimated 7 tracks that remain.
If they were pleased enough with those songs, to want to include them in the first place, then they're not going to just let them go quietly into the good night.
At least I should hope not.

Greetings, all ~ I'm new here. :)
(I really enjoy your insight, Johnny Stew - thanks for posting such thought provoking *and peaceful* messages)
I also believe that there is a good chance that the additional 7 songs will make it into our disc players.... it seems like the real "fad" right now is to put out a special edition cd, shortly after the initial album's release - with additional tracks, remixes, DVD supplemental material, etc. all.
Celine Dion, Josh Groban, The Dixie Chicks, Alanis Morisette, David Bowie, etc. - they all come to mind as doing this with their most recent releases.
The Mac cd may be followed with a *Special Edition* cd(s) or cd/DVD package... with the 7 songs added to the original album, or by themselves with an additional DVD (lots of options available!)--- and there is also the *FM Documentary* that was previewed on the VBOFM; we have heard that it is to be televised and released on DVD ~ maybe it will be incorporated into a Special Edition?
I am annoyed by the rumours as of late, and do really wish that Mick's camp, or fleetwoodmac.com would UPDATE with some substantial and OFFICIAL info --- like *the NAME of the album*, for instance! We could refer to it by name, instead of the "double-single-'GOS'-new-studio-album-Album??!!" ;)
~Happy to hear, and experience, the excitement with all of you though.

I can't remember which magazine it was but one of them (around the time when they started naming some of the tracks) mentioned that "Come" and "Peacekeeper" as two of the LB tracks. Of course we all want to hear the left out songs...but if you surf the net and search for downloads or check the sites that regularly post downloads, don't you think it's a matter of time before we will have them anyways?
SO, in trying to keep a positive attitude, I'm hoping that a single CD will sell better because all the casual listeners who maybe pick up the CD at a store will buy it, where as if it was a double CD and cost a little more, they might not. Our economy is not great, so even someone who is a fan (but not as diehard as a Ledgie!) might not buy the CD because they just don't have a lot of extra $. Especially because the chances of them scoring a top 10 pop song are slim to help them get more exposure (which will equal more sales).
I'd rather read that the album cracked the top 10 (hopefully #1!) and sold 4-8 million (hopefully more like 200 million!) than that it cracked the top 20 and then faded into obscurity like BTM or something. And although we are all dying for the new album we have yet to see how the loss of Christine will affect their popularity & sales with the general public. Unfortunately it's an imperfect world for a Fleetwood Mac diehard, but the marketing people might have changed things based on surveys/listeners responses/current market info, etc.
Besides, if it's only a single CD, we always have each other and the Ledge for consolation!

Hi ~ and thanks for the welcome! :) :) :)
WoW - that is such a cool compliment(!) -- I did work up that image; I really enjoy posting graphics that I do, with the hopes that *someone* might enjoy and download them for their own collection.... I altered that familiar Dance image because I suspect that in the song Thrown Down, Stevie is specifically singing about Lindsey and her during The Dance tour in '97... I remember him making a comment about them getting back together in the '97 article in Rolling Stone, and Stevie saying something like, "not on your life!" I think that she was waiting in a way for Lindsey to "prove how he could be good for her," this time around...
*Anyway*, just MY interpretation, :D ... and thanks again for the kind words. I will add more graphics again, here and there ~ just for fun.

Besides, if it's only a single CD, we always have each other and the Ledge for consolation!
Its the feast of the rabid, We're already crying over songs that we have not heard, and are afraid will not make the CD.
I see both sides, Quality vs Quantity - and all of us fan starved FM diehards who feel that they OWE us a double CD after so many years of neglect and excruciating lengths btwn releases....Afterall, this CD should have been out in '99 or 2000, If the record company really wanted to capitalize off of "The Dances" success....even Stevie's TISL was a long time coming by industy standards....
However, I suspect now it will be a corporate decision, and It is out of Fleetwood Mac's hands (unless they release this CD themselves) someone mentioned the ecomomy- this and more specifically the Record Industry steep decline in sales of late, will undoubtable be a deciding factor for Warner/Reprise.
I think we will be very lucky to see this CD be released as a double.
The music industry has been through alot of downsizing and management changes the last year, with most of them planning on ditching anywhere from 15-20 artists from their roster going into 2003
I was reading the latest RollingStone's article "2002's Music Biz Disaster' about a year of lay-offs, cutbacks and plunging sales....and the outlook for 2003 is no better"....
and reading this couldnt help but confirm my fears that we will see a single disc release (w/ I hope a minimum of 16 tracks!) I hope that I am wrong, I think FM turned in 23 songs they felt were worthy of release!, But Im also preparing myself, so not to be too disapointed.
Perhaps they will release a european version w/ extra tracks as Sheryl Crow did w C'mom C'mom...One way or another im hoping the diehards will get to hear the left off crumbs, ....., just not as quickly as we'd all like. :D

Yes, I agree, one way or another we will get the extra tracks. And yes, we feel we deserve the extra tracks (and we do) but undoubtedly the general public would think that many of the tracks were filler. How many double albums have you ever had that you like all the way through (outside of FM)?
Unfortunately the whole world doesn't crave as many possible songs that you could possibly squeeze out of the Mac and endless hours of conversation and dissection of every one of those songs (unless I've just got the wrong group of friends
 )
So if a single disc sells well hopefully the record co. or whoever will see the $ potential of releasing a bonus CD!

I'd die of an overdose of happiness if we got two redone versions of those on the new album! (but I've grown to love Down On Rodeo so much I don't know if I could handle a reworked version!!)
