What's the deal with this song,

I hear maybe one moan that could be Stevie.

Did she really do this song??

I love Phil Collins and thats excites me, but was she supposed to do the duet and just did a little bit??

I think Stevie is supposed to be in there on the backing vocals somewhere.

I've listened to this song what seems like millions of times and I can't pick her out to save my life! :D

Unfortunately I have no idea how Stevie ended up on the song, or why she's barely audible, but if you listen closely, you can hear her echoing the word, "compromise," right after Marilyn Martin sings the line, "there was no way to compromise."

If she's anywhere else on the song, then she must be buried in the mix.

I've listened to this song numerous times, listening for Stevie and I, personally, don't think she's there at all....certain parts kind of sound like her, but I don't its her. Maybe I'll have to go back and listen again. That might be kind of hard, though, because Phil Collins makes me want to claw my eyes out.

Well I don't hear her at all....still love this song though. Can't beat a bit of slush!

I always thought it was the Marilyn Martin connection that was the reason why Stevie was part of "Separate Lives."

This song & "Don't Come Around Here No More" are similar because we can't tell whether we really hear Stevie or not. We think we do, but we're not sure.

One thought is, like a movie where an actor is credited with being in the movie, then their scene being left on the cutting room floor, maybe Stevie DID sing on the tune, but her vocals were out of the final mix...BUT, still, her voice is on an unused track of the master tape.

Yeah, at the end of the day, I think what Chili says is probably what happened.

I do agree with David too though that it was probably due most to the Martin connection (if she is on there at all that is).

The only part I hear on it that I THINK MIGHT be her is (around) the 2:06 mark.

Oh, I definitely feel that Stevie's friendship with Marilyn Martin, is the contributing factor to her appearance on the song... I just meant that I'm not sure *why* she's there.
They certainly didn't use her vocals to enhance the song, or anything. Beyond her echoing the word "compromise" (like I mentioned above), you can't hear her one bit.

The only theory I've ever had, was that Marilyn's vocals were recorded in the studio, at the time 'Rock A Little' was being recorded, and perhaps Stevie hung around for moral support.
(Remember, duets are often recorded in seperate studios, at seperate times, then the two vocal parts are put together during the mixing process. Especially fitting for a song called "Seperate Lives"!)

Thank you everyone!

I really think that is her at the one part, its no denying it hehehe.

But I really like Phil Collins. I think he's just got a great easy listening voice and I like so many of his songs.

I just got excited that two of my favorite female stars ( Frida and Stevie) were associated with him. Now just Kate Bush, Christine McVie and Im a happy as a clam:)

That's a possibility. Apparently, that happened on a lot of songs from Sandy Stewart's first album.
