When stevie ''quit'' fleetwood mac back in 1990 it was all over
the song silver springs. We all know the history of the song but
if you recall all stevie ever wanted was to have the ORIGINAL
version of this song released. Well, looking back over the last
25 years stevie never really got her wish...until now...maybe???
1977-removed from the rumours album...put on the back of a 45
1992-song shows up on the $$$$ 4-cd box set
1997-song shows up again but as a live version
2002-the original version FINALLY shows up on a ''normal''
priced cd.
So my question is....is this the way stevie wanted the song to
get out to the world?
Now we all can look foward to the buckinghan-nicks cd...25 years
from now...lol j/k

I am sure she would have just wanted in on Rumours..but i think at this point she is just glad to have it out there, plus the live version got like 3 Grammy nods, and who knows if the studio version would have?

I still think The Dance version is much better than the old studio version. The studio version to me is boring...Stevie's voice was higher then, and therefore it wasn't too difficult for her to sing those high notes. Now that she has to really pack it in to get out those high notes, they have more power to them, making it sound more energetic and, for lack of a better term, more "felt." Plus, the guitar just sounds better on the Dance than that Dreams/How Still My Love guitar sound which I can't even explain, but you know on Dreams (studio version) after the first 8 beats the guitar starts with that one note, and it sounds like it's starting really soft and whining it's way louder, then fading. Anyway, whatever kind of guitar does that, I'm not too fond of it. I Don't Want to Know just fit better on Rumours too...because it was more upbeat. Stevie had Dreams and Gold Dust Woman and the Chain on there...Silver Springs would have been too mundane to put on Rumours due to these other songs, because they would all be almost the same, if you know what I mean.

It's not the "type of guitar"...it's what the guitarist is doing...it's called "volume swells". Pioneered by George Harrison on the song "I Need You" from the Beatles "Help!" album.
If "Silver Springs" HAD made it to Rumours, all the arguments over which version is better would be moot. It would've been THE version; heard constantly since 1977 and would've been just as etched in people's gray matters as "Dreams", "Don't Stop", "GDW, "GYOW", etc. And, probably played live every tour since 1977, as well. So, "The Dance" version would've been "just another Rumours war-horse song...IF "The Dance" tour would've even happened at all. But, because the 45 was taken off the market in 1978, it wasn't given airplay anymore...and didn't surface again until 1992...but, wasn't given really any notice by radio programmers.

I didn't know what it was called, but I love volume swells! I love the way it sounds in I Need You- an awesome song, and the way it sounds in Dreams. Thank you ChiliD.:D
But I agree, I don't think the technique was appropriate for Silver Springs. The dramatic piano playing those chords is much better.
The Dance version with its emotion and those priceless moments between Lindsey and Stevie make you totally appreciate the song, in any shape or form. I 'm sure many would agree that things happen for a reason, and the reunion tour was the right time for that song to be heard by millions for the first time. I think it can be appreciated on a much deeper level, having happened this way. But it's cool that they stuck the old one on the new collection. It will reach a much biger audience now and I believe it'll generate a flurry of new die-hard Stevie fans.;)

I agree completely...
I LOVE the original version...The Dance version was very nicely done but i think i lean towards the studio version. I think that's one of the few songs (of that era) that Stevie's voice still sounds pretty good on live.... And, i love the "volume swells" guitar effect in general. I have a volume pedal and it takes some practice to get it down....I can't think of how that Beatles' song goes offhand. Anyway, i wish Lindsey had continued to use the effect live both on SS and Dreams. Part of the magic of the recorded songs is the instrumentation/effects and how everything is essentially put together and when you change that during a live performance it changes the whole song. Not that those songs aren't good if he's not using that effect but it just makes them unique.
also.....i just heard SS the other morning and it sounded good. it was the Dance version and i haven't listened to that in a while. I remember Christine's high part during the harmony...i'll miss that

I have a cassette recording of an interview Stevie did during the 'Timespace' tour. She was being interviewed by Jim Ladd just before taking the stage at the Whiskey. Jim asked her about 'Silver Springs.' Stevie said she was going to re-record it for her next album. Fortunately, she didn't. I would have hated to hear the Street Angel-Klonopin version of that song...

Me too! **cringe, shudder**
That song can't be done without Mr. Buckingham. I think she must have realized this.

I thought that, too. First I was all 'Yippy!!!' Then I thought, that is soooo not a solo song.
On the Dance vs. Studio debate, I was all for the Dance version, but I just listened to the Rumours DVD, and the song is SO POWERFUL. In a way, they are two totally different songs. In the studio, Stevie is still hurting, and you can feel the pain and heartbreak.
On the Dance, however, she is kinda telling Lindsey, 'See? I was right, you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loved you.'
