6 month anniversary of September 11th ~
Isn’t it odd that I am here today~ I was supposed to have left on Saturday, but Friday I decided I didn’t want to make 3 more cross country flights. Coming here last week was the first time I have traveled on a commercial airline since Sept. 11th. I came here to do the Revlon Breast Cancer Benefit with Sheryl Crow. When I realized that I was going to have to come back the next weekend to see my best friend Tom Petty be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame~ I just decided to stay ~ So here I am on March 11th, the 6 month anniversary of the bombing of the World Trade Center.
I am watching the Oprah show about Lauren, the lady chased through the lobby by a fire ball that blew out of the elevator and burned almost her whole body ~ About her husband, who never left her side~ And about her little boy, who did not run away from her when he saw her.
I’m sure tonight many more stories will be told~ People need to share their stories~ It opens my eyes even more to the ongoing aftershocks of that saddest of days~ But also, to the incredible resilience of the people of New York. What impresses me most is that everyone except the people here have been able to move away from the tragedy a little bit~ But the people here~ by virtue of just living here~ can’t really move away at all~ Everyday, new information, new stories~ Everyday that I have been here I have been touched by something about 9-11~ My morning at the Waldorf=Astoria, the morning that everyone’s ‘childlike innocence’ was threatened…But 6 months later~ here in New York~ People did not lose hope forever~ So I am glad and proud to be here now. Once again, it pretty much makes my problems fade to gray. I will write more as the week progresses~ I’m sure there will be much to say.
Tonight they light the two great blue light beams in tribute to those who died~ And for those who are left.
You will see these beams from outer space~ And from heaven…
In one minute the lights will be turned on~ here they go~ the two columns are becoming brighter and brighter…they are beautiful.
Beautiful
Blue
Light…

Late night news coverage
Slowly, a newswoman walks us through ground zero~ slowly touring the hallways hand prints on a wall, bottles in the Bar-Café, still waiting to be opened, not broken, not a person in sight~ dead or alive.
You really just can’t believe it.
I can’t express enough how much I admire the people who live here…it’s wonderful to be here~ but it is just so heavy~ Like I wrote when it happened~ it’s just almost too much to bear. Just overwhelming~ the blue lights went on tonight. You know how I feel about blue light…They are beautiful~ like the towers are~ see through, like gauze~ ghostly…Maybe that is what the towers look like in heaven…
Don’t take me to the tower
And take my child away
‘Twas I who was the hour glass
And the sands of time, like shattering glass
Went past me~ Like a tunnel ~
To the sea…
The four firemen working at the site~ Until they find their children. And John returned~ who lost two sons, well, if I had the power~ you can bet I would have turned back time~ waved a magic wand~ and given these men back their children. How inspired I am by them. I will write about them forever~
And so, in the words of an anonymous newsman~
“The grief is still as deep~
As the towers were tall”
I guess that about says it all…
Love

New York City
And once again, as destiny would have it, I am again here for the 3rd symbolic day of the tragedy. I came here to do a benefit show for the Robin Hood Foundation, a foundation that supports underprivileged children in New York ~ not realizing that ~ today, an empty stretcher is to be loaded into a waiting ambulance~ signifying the people who were never found.
The last steel girder, covered by a flag, put on a big truck~
And slowly driven away.
This is so hard for those who have worked so hard to find everybody. No one wanted to give up. I think they are so awesome.
So today, here in New York, the cleaning up is done, like that great fireman who said “We will stay until it is broom clean”~ and today was the official day where it was declared~ broom clean.

The Beach
I’m alone now…with my thoughts~ of how we could make it…of how we could get out. Of all of the trauma and of what we have been through…the smell of Nag Champra; shadows of the strangers…What I saw on this journey, I saw history go down; I cannot pretend that the heartache goes away. It’s just like a river; it’s never ending. I cannot pretend that the heartache falls away~
Because it’s like a river~
It’s never ending…
A year ago today ~ at this very time I was in the air~ flying from Toronto Canada to New York City. We landed at about three o’clock. I had been listening to a Shawn Colvin song over and over for weeks~ just this one song. It was about plane crashes.
“They found her on a hill
in Columbia
Intact amongst the debris”~
I remember singing that line walking from the plane to the limo~ over and over. It was my choice to not stay in Toronto for the day off. The band stayed in Canada. I wanted to go to New York… I think that is ~ destiny.
For some strange reason, I was meant to be there. Looking back, I see those three days, (11th, 12th, 13th) as in a dream. It’s all in slow motion…I remember being~ so happy to be going there. Maybe it is the contrast of the joyfulness and lightness~ the drive into New York~ the first time you see all the city lights, getting to the Waldorf~walking into that beautiful suite~that glorious New York sunrise coming through all the windows~I was so happy to be there. I don’t think I have ever felt that kind of joy~backed up against that kind of shock and disbelief. It seemed that I had just closed my eyes~
And the world changed
Forever~
I will not take you for granted
I wouldn’t trade you for jade~
Or for diamonds~
Not for one minute,
Not for anything
I need you to be there~
Just remember when I am haunted~
That I was just so scared.
I feel lucky that I was able to come off the road into the dreamlike setting of recording a studio album with Fleetwood Mac. It was a good place to be after what I had been through, I was very emotional~ the band felt very healing to me. I also felt so blessed to be alive and also be in a big time rock and roll band making new music~a great tragedy followed by a gift. Making this record has been a gift.
So for tonight, that is my message~
Love is a gift
Music is a gift
Life is a gift
Freedom ~ is a gift…
And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind~
In the web that is my own
I begin again…
Love

as a New Yorker, I'm just so glad I became a Stevie fan so long ago. I read her journal entries today, Sept 11th, while listening to the reading of the names at Ground Zero and found them to be a ray of light...
This past year, I have shared her journal entries with friends and family and all have been amazed and uplifted that a "rock star" has taken the time to share her thoughts with her fans...makes you feel good...
I'm glad to hear that working on the FM record has helped Stevie cope with being a witness to history and that makes me again look forward to hearing the new album...

reading her journals because it shows that she is more intelligent than most people have assumed...Definately a very classy lady, Brian J.
PS-Wasnt it kinda weird to see her write the lyrics to the demo song "The Tower"? Wonder if that song may appear on a future (Hint-Hint) release...

God, that woman kills me..i swear...I mean you couldn't pay me to write a journal like that...she is just such a cossumate writer...i love that everything is so dramatic with her...I'm glad she decided to share some more entries...it really made me feel better yesterday.

estranged, I was wondering the same thing. I hope so _ I think it's one of Stevie's best unreleased songs, and it does seem like an appropriate time to finish it once and for all.
My only reservation would be that Stevie probably wouldn't be able to sing the tune as high as she did on the demo, which might detract from its appeal.

Being a New Yorker, Stevie's journal entries have really gotten me through a lot. She has managed to write down exactly what I was feeling.. only I could not write it as eloquently. Her recent entries had made me feel so much better.

I too, am touched by her entries. They are very empathetic.
But I was equally shocked to see the exerpt from "The Tower". I get the whole literal meaning, but she has always guarded this particular demo so closely, and for her to share it so openly, when it is most likely about something SO personal (and off-limits) to her.....well that touches me more than anything.
Didn't she get upset at her Storytellers taping when someone asked her about it?

Didn't she get upset at her Storytellers taping when someone asked her about it?
Well, from what I'm told, she mentioned to the person something about "Well, The Tower wasn't ready to be heard yet," but I'm sure someone has the exact quote. Which leads me to wonder, why would someone ask an artist about a song that isn't released? It's obviously not going to make the artist happy to realize that music is being heard that wasn't made to be heard yet. Then again, that sounds like something I would do and then have an Ally McBeal moment...the whole "foot in the mouth" type of thing. Hehe
I think The Tower would be the perfect song to put on the album in memory of 9-11, even though it's not about the WTC obviously. It seems to fit perfectly.

In regards to "The Tower", I think that the experience behind it has not left her yet. Even though she appears to be so very together now, I have the feeling she still really struggles with that period in her life.
When I read her journal entries ~ as beautiful as they are ~ I still see someone with some inner termoil. Would you agree?

Yes, i agree with you...she just really seems sooo affected by it all.I mean,we all are in some way,but the way she writes about it..i don't know,it is hard to explain.I honestly think it has something to do with the fact that she doesn't have any kids, regardless of the fact that she has stated numerous times that she made a choice not to have babies.I think there must be times when it really gets to her, especially when it comes to things like 9/11,because if she did have children, her emotions would be moe focused toward their well being through all of it,etc.
So i think it definitely comes through in her writing, whether or not she wants us to read into it,it is there.

Oh yes, I would definitely agree.
Stevie has an undercurrent of turmoil. She has alot of unfinished business in her life, and hopefully one day she will resolve enough of it to have a little more inner peace than she does now.
It's not that I think she is unhappy, per se, I just think there is still some angst there because she keeps revealing glimpses of it.
Also, she is a very empathetic person, a real "sensitive artist" in the classic sense.
Things just affect her deeply, and the fact that she has no real life partner to lean on means she just puts alot of it in her art, so we see it expressed in that way.
Maybe that is why we love her so much!

I hope it won't be difficult for her to tour with 3 married men who have very young wives and small children. Two of these men being great loves of her life. If the guys are with there families on their off hours, who does Stevie spend her time with?
I kind of wish Sheryl would open for them, so she could have her companionship during the tour. Although it seems that she and her assistant have a close friendship.

to spend time with Stevie if she was to get lonely on the upcoming tour...lol...But wouldn't WE all???...hehehehe, Brian J.
I really don't see Stevie as someone who is "alone", and if she is it's most likely because she chooses it. It is an interesting thought though about the comparison to Stevie and the other band members, them being family men and she still being single. I guess the whole band would still travel together but I don't see their families tagging along, at least not for the whole tour. I would also presume that Stevie has adjusted to her single life to a certain degree by now and maybe enjoying the freedom she has because of it. The freedom to dedicate more of her life to her music, go shopping, travelling wherever and whenever she wants, and well just whatever the heck she wants to do. After all she is THE QUEEN. ;)
Anyone have the words to "The Tower" or where I can find them?

Doesn't Stevie usually tour with an entourage the size of a cruise ship?

Hey jwd!
I like your positve spin on this about-to-turn-melancholy thread!
Stevie is the Queen!
No poopy pull-ups, pudding paws, and baby barf for her!
Let those "regular" females deal with that!

hi everyone,
Stevie being in New York on Sept 11th and also being the artist that she is, it is totally understandable to me that she was affected so deeply...besides she has said one of the reasons she got off drugs was to be able to feel again even if she feels very intensely. Personally, this is one of the main reasons why I love her and am such a big fan...
The Tower is also a very special song to me for some of the same reasons that Stevie wrote it... Even when you finally accept and realize you are not going to have children and you are moving on with your life, you can still have bad days and the experience of death can always bring those feelings to the surface...and I can see how easily this song has grown from a personal experience to a communal experience...
it was funny, i was listening on TV to some of the widows talk about their feelings of loss and even tho they were saying people can't possible understand their loss, alot of their feelings and words struck a familar chord with me. I finally concluded that "loss" is always both an individual and community experience, we all feel it as human beings just the details are different...and that's why I think that's why over the years Stevie's music and words has eventually touched every one of my friends and family over the years...even my anti-Stevie friends have come around...
so now that I've turned the thread melancholy again, I'm gonna go listen to "Stand Back" :wavey:

Well Bella, you're a Queen too!
We ALL are in our own way......even some of the guys are ;)!!
haha!!
I'm gonna think about that today when I'm cleaning the bathroom of my 7 and 8 yeard old boys. One of these days they are going to learn to aim, and somehow they will not develop amnesia as to what that little silver handle on the toilet tank is for! I just know it! I am a Queen dammit!
But Stevie is THE QUEEN!! Miss High Priestess herself! I hope she has people around her who make her feel as special as she is! There are alot of people who just express themselves in a very touching way, many of them not famous rock stars, but because Stevie is famous we glom onto her. So, I'm not worshipping her or anything like that, I am just saying it takes alot of internal fortitude to share your deep feelings the public, especially in a way that is comforting and that everyone can identify with. That's why I think she is special.......she can take a personal experience and put enough into it that it can mean many things to many different folks.

Oh, I love knights, too! Us Queens definitely need those in our courts! lol!!
And Brian, I know you're one of the knights, don't worry!
Just go with what ya feel, cause we need all kinds of folks to make the world go round! ;)!!

Well that's good to know! I hope she does travel with a huge entourage. We never really get to see her with anyone. I know she doesn't need a mate to be happy, but everyone needs companionship. It would be cool to know more about her friends and how they spend their time.
There's a picture in the tour book (very dark, can barely make it out) that looks like the girls sitting outside by candlelight. I'd love to know what they talk about!?! Bet there's lots of giggling. Stevie reminds me of a giggler!

I wondered if there would be more journal entries of hers, what with the anniversary of Sept. 11th.
Thank you Stevie!!
Just the other day, I printed out all of her other entries, so that I could keep them forever with all of my Stevie stuff.
