Gotta work in that damn crystal ball somehow... ;)

I was hoping for new pic, but they picked one from my favorite era, so I like it.

Isn't it funny how their clothes and hair are all back in style?
They look just as cool and fresh as any of the current groups....
lol!
I bet it will really draw in some new young fans who may think they are a new group that looks very 'today'!
haha!

I can't wait to get my hands on it to see what else is inside!
Thanks!

If you do order the CD at amazon online, use Marty's links to do it as (I don't know much about how it works but...) it helps him to fund The Penguin website. I personally won't be buying it but I just figured if a bunch of people here might buy it this way anyways that it was/would be worth mentioning, that's all. :)

Hi John

Not that damn crystal ball again!! I am really sick of that little "instrument" being overused. I like the picture but it seems outdated to me. It's safe to say that I don't like the cover, or better yet it really didn't impress me. Well, since it's being released on reprise I guess you couldn't expect them to put a lot of thought into it and come up with something NEW.

Thanks for the link John.

I would have preferred The Dance era - IMO this is too dated.

kinda weird but ok I guess. I'd have preferred a more current picture of them. Like Les says they just can't get rid of that crystal ball, can they..

Hmm... not too bad. It could be worse. But I totally agree that they should have used a more recent pic. And for some reason that giant hand is really bugging me... LOL! I don't know why, but it is.

i could deal with the crystal ball alot better if there was a more recent picture in it...but since they did pick an oldie,at least it is a cool one.

There is not one new song on this set, the cover picture is not new, and the album is not even being promoted on their official website.....so I think we can say with almost complete certainty that this will be the last time Fleetwood Mac will have anything to with Reprise / WB.....I get the feeling FM & their management totally were against the idea altogether and probably had very little, if any, say in what should and shouldn't go on it (it looks like the entire construction and promotion has been left to Reprise to put together what they can with "old" material).....but they HAD to release one last thing with that label so they said "Fine, you can have one final album, and that's it...we're not going to help you promote it any way and we're certainly not giving you any new songs...".;)

Good...!! After all that stuff about WB dropping "old artists" simply because "they're old"....I'm glad FM are leaving them...they deserve a label that fully appreciates the honour of having them signed.:)

I would be EXTREMELY surprised if those rumours of the tour in support of the GH package came true (unless they have a contract with Reprise to tour in support of it).....whoever started those rumours probably mistook this release for the "new album" release date and so assumed that they would be touring in support of it.:woohoo:

I think the only thing keeping this from being a "perfect" cover is the lack of a penguin...other than that, I like it a lot! It's a time capsule of the past. They're promoting a band whose biggest success was between 1976-1980 (and the music contained is majorily from that era as well), so why put a recent photo? Market them as THEY WERE, not as THEY ARE. This collection is, to the older folks, for reminiscing, for that longing for "the good ol' days"...and to the younger crowd---those who are just LEARNING about Fleetwood Mac, it's a "starter kit". That's all.

This new album isn't designed to be "for us"...we're beyond this and we should KNOW that, and not be so upset by it. I really would rather see THIS album with THIS cover than something like that God-awful cover from the 1988 GH package.

The NEW album next year will show them as they are now. And, I'm REALLY looking forward to THAT!

And besides, I used to have the poster of the original photo (from the "chicken coop shoot") that this cover photo was taken from.

Right chilid!! I agree...let's not get mad about it. It's a more complete GH CD then the crappy 1988 one, with that dumb cover. This cover carries on the "crystal vision" tradition. I hope there are some cool photos in the booklet inside...cuz I'm buying the fricken thing even tho I have all the CD's and stuff. I like listening to the box set sometimes because of the wierd tracking of the songs (I like not really knowing what song is coming on next!!) This CD will get me through at work on RADIO DAY FRIDAYS!! LOL I do wish they had some pre-SnL songs on there, more Danny Kirwan (hehe) would be nice...for me, anyways.

I have to agree with those who like the new cover. All those songs are from the past, so what good would a new photo be? The old photo on there is not that bad, so I guess it could be worse.

I also have to agree with those who have expressed their disliking of the 88 album cover. What the hell is that mushroomy or flowery enigma supposed to be or represent anyway? (i'm seriously asking because i have no clue whatsoever)

I like the cover just fine. As others have said, most of these songs are from 1975-1979 so it makes sense to have a cover photo from that era. I also completely agree with seteca about this being the last album from Warner/Reprise. As soon as I saw that there were no new songs, that's what I thought had happened.

By the way, that is an orange blossom on the front cover of the 1988 Greatest Hits album.

Thanks for all of your thoughts on this everyone.

Knowing what we do about this compilation now though, it STILL does make me wonder, if this was a "completely Reprise records" affair, WHY they felt as though they had to wait for FIVE YEARS to pass before putting something like this out?! Surely if they wanted to make money off of it (which we know they do), they would have "built off of" the success of "The dance" etc. by putting it out closer to that time and as there are no new tracks, they could've easily done this collection back then but whatever, I just have been wondering about that lately. Any thoughts on that?

First about the cover i agree with most of you that most of the material is from rumours and tusk that it is logical to put on a photo from that era.
and second i actualy DO like the 88 gh cover just fine (especialy the one on the lp (cause it has depth)
I don't know what the flower stands for either but who cares.
I don't think The group had no involvment whatsoever.
It is my idea that they must certanly have had some input.
Why else would they also include lesser known songs.
I love the fact that go insane live is on there it is my fav track from the dance and i was dissapointed that it wasn't on the cd back than (they realy should have put the dance out the way it was without it being edited and the five tracks being cut out) I mean there are things called double albums

Well, I will agree that this cover is A LOT better than the '88 GH album cover..........this one is ok......not the best they could have come up with........but it could be worse.
The only slight problem I have with it is, granted, most of the songs are from the "Rumours" line-up.....but there's also the two '88 GH songs and Behind the Mask stuff.....I think it would have been more appropriate to have a new picture of them, and get Rick & Billy in there too. I don't know...just my opinion....I just know that I can't wait for it to come out so I can buy it, then start thinking more about the NEW album and tour!!!!!!!!

I think the connection between the Mac and the orange blossom is something along the lines of Mick, John, and Christine finding Lindsey and Stevie in California. Christine's mom, who was supposedly psychic, told her she would find it in an ORANGE grove.

Actually I like the cover of the 88 Greatest Hits album better. It's more comtemporary than the upcoming lp cover. I wouldn't have used a picture at all, but some kind of graphic design to update the image of the band. The crystal ball with the 70s pic is just too cheesey IMO. I do like the picture on the upcoming FM site...you know just the instruments arranged together with the tambourine hanging from the mic stand with the rainbow streamers. That says a lot more than the crystal ball shot on the best of cover.

I really like this one....I think it is beautiful, and it is something people will recognize as very Fleetwood Mac....as sad as it is, I think more people would be like, WHO ARE THEY? with an updated picture....and about the one used on the new website....I think that picture is SO cheesy and I am glad they are not using it....espcially wiht the rainbow streamers....really do not like it.

Oh THANK YOU for saying that!!! agh finally somone else said that. I totally agree...this album isnt for us really..its for the regular music listeners etc. LOL people are so critical but its only a freaking greatest hits package...for the people who are not fans.

For what it's worth (he says, having spent a long time obsessing over very small details in Mac promo photos) it's from the same photo session as the 'deck/porch' shot from the cover of the Samuel Graham biography.

;) Might have known you'd know.

Out of curiosity, do you know if http://www.sararhiannon.com/macg.jpg (and others) are from the same session? And why 'the chicken coop session' anyway?

chiliD

From what I've read, that "shack" they're standing in front of (in this link) is an old converted chicken coop. There are a few different shots from that one session. The poster I had was the same shot as the Sam Graham cover. It was a 3'x4' poster...just huge!

http://www.sararhiannon.com/mac3333.jpg

I think the one you linked to is from an earlier photo session.

Actually, several years separate the two photo shoots. The macg.jpg is from late 1977 in New Zealand, & the others are from early 1976.

Keep this in mind: When you see Rumours-era shots of Mick with a huge, bushy beard & an Old West moustache (the combination makes him look like an orthodox rabbi), they're from very late in 1977 or 1978. If Christine's hair is tightly crimped in rows, it's from approximately the same period. If Christine's hair is curling iron-flipped -- once on each side -- it's from early in 1977. Mick was beardless throughout most of 1975 & again in most of 1979, although he grew his beard for the tour.

Next lesson: Distinguishing early Tusk tour from mid-period Tusk tour from late Tusk tour.

The band really let the ball drop when it vetoed this photo for the cover of the new Greatest Repeats album:

I think the cover's pretty cheesy. The photo itself is fine, but the overall design looks like low-grade religious art, what with the floating hand and the white, "heavenly" backdrop.
I am excited about seeing the extra features on the CD, though.

In another thread discussing the cover of the 'Very Best Of," i mentioned that the hand and crystal ball reminded me of the cover for the paperback version of Mick's second book, 'My Twenty-Five Years In Fleetwood Mac.'

Unfortunately, I couldn't find that pic anywhere on the net to show what I meant... so tonight while I had the scanner fired-up, I went ahead and scanned a copy of the book cover.

Here's the front....
