[The year is 1979. Lindsey rushes into the studio, tape in hand.]
"Mick, Mick. Hey, guys. Listen to this. I was working on this track last night in my bathroom."
Mick stumbles in. The roadie follows. Mick stops. The roadie climbs on a step ladder, Mick turns his head up, opens his mouth. The roadie pours in half a bottle of Bud. Mick swallows with gusto. Wipes his lip on his sleeve.
"What's this, Lad?" he says to Lindsey who, unable to contain himself, has popped the tape in. "Listen..."
"Hmmm... What, what is it that awful percussive sound?" Mick says.
"Oh, it's just a cardboard box. Cool, huh?"
"Cardboard? Oh, OK, we'll tape my part over that, then erase it," Mick says.
"No, no, no, Mick, see. I have this great idea. Let's keep the song just as it is, cardboard and all."
"Well, I'll be. This is majorly disappointing, Lindsey. I've been replaced by cardboard." Mick looks up again, and opens his mouth. The roadie rushes in with the ladder and beer.
Lindsey lights a spliff. For a second, he wishes he were Bob Marley. Then he goes back to wishing he were Elvis.
[Meanwhile, from an adjacent room, some sparse, off-key piano notes spill out. In the room is Stevie, wrestling with a Casio keyboard.]
"I'll eat my eggs before noon," she intones. To herself, she mutters: "Eggs before noon? That's no good. I gotta come up with something else that makes no sense but sounds good." She tacks away on the keyboard. "Hmmm. How about, Be my sisters of the moon? Hey, that's pretty good. I think I'll make that the chorus."
Back in the sound room, an overindulgent Lindsey is rewinding repeatedly to the parts of the song he particularly likes.
"Cardboard box. Crazy bugger," Mick mumbles, while he picks stray coke dustings from his vest and then sucks his fingers. "Little runt, thinks he knows everything. I have a good mind to slap his silly mug, or, or... kick him off the band. I wonder what Clapton is doing these days."
John rushes in. "Lindsey, Lindsey, hey, Liiiiiiinndsey!"
Lindsey barely looks up from the mixer.
"Lindsey, I gotta sing on this record. Come on, you promised last time. You said, 'On the next record, you can sing, John. Come on, I gotta sing, don't you see?
"Hmmm. Yeah, John let's talk about this later. Meanwhile, I want you to redo the bass part on The Ledge. You gotta make it simpler, man. Otherwise, you're going to outshine my guitar parts. We don't want that."
Deflated, John picks up his bass, and saunters off to the booth.
[What will happen next? Will John get to sing? Will Stevie finish her song? Will Lindsey trip on his own ego? And, where's Christine? Tune in next week for the next episode of TUSK: THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY.]

Nothing I love more than a good satire. The part about Mick was especially funny. I still shake my head when I see the roadie pouring beer into Mick's mouth in the Mirage concert video.
And poor, underappreciated John. Well, he gets to sing on that prominent Mirage B-track cover "Cool Water." hehe.

[The phone rings. Lindsey lifts his head from the console, looks back down, fiddles with the knobs. The phone continues to ring.]
"Hey, guys, anybody? Somebody pickup the phone," he shouts. "Christine? John? Is anybody here?"
He walks over, picks up the receiver, muttering, "I've gotta do everything around here. Now I'm an operator too."
"Hello?"
---------
"Yes? Mick?"
---------
"What!? No, way, not again, Mick. This is becoming a regular..."
---------
"Oh, all right, I'll get somebody to pick you up."
John walks in just as Lindsey, brow furrowed, hangs up.
"Cheerio," John says. "I was thinking, I should practice my vocal parts today and..."
"Oh, not now, John. Mick is in the drunk tank again."
"Again?"
"And you gotta pick him up."
"Me? Why me? I gotta practice my voc..."
"Look, John, I don't have time for this. You gotta pick him up. Damnit, I've got too much, too much to, to do around here... And besides, I know you know where the drunk tank is. You're well acquainted with it, as I recall."
"Oh, gee, Lindsey, there's no need for insults, lad. I'll go pick him up."
"Better check the petty cash box. You're gonna need to bail him out."
John leaves. Lindsey goes back to the console, starts running the tape. "...wwooooork. Don't know why I can't play," he sings along. "This is damn good," he thinks. "I'm damn good, but most importantly, this music has integrity." He sings: "...a place..."
Christine walks in. "Hello," she says. "Where's everybody?"
"Hey, Chris. Well, John just went to pick up Mick at the drunk tank..."
"Oh, not again."
"Yes, again. Stevie's somewhere practicing one of her songs. Something about eggs and high noon, full moon, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, whatever. I gave her my ukelele to play with. That should keep her busy for a while. What's up with you? You got anything for me?"
"As a matter of fact, Lindsey, I've got this song I'm pretty excited about.... It's called Honey Hi."
"Honey High, heh? Is that a new thing? I've heard of getting high from whipped-cream cans. But, hey, I'll try anything..."
"No, no, no, silly. Honey Hi, H-I. As in hello?"
"Oh, well, OK. Let's hear it. It would be cool getting high from honey, though."
"All right. It's kind of sparse though. Just the piano, like Songbird. I think it'll work."
Lindsey pops the tape in. "Hmmm," he says, "I like the repetition. You know I like that..."
"Yeah, I know."
"But I don't know about the piano thing. Maybe we can use just guitar instead." He picks up an Ovation, starts strumming the A-D-E pattern. "Yeah, like that. Now, check out this muted strum pattern, huh?"
"Not quite what I had in mind, Lindsey. I, I..."
"Christine, trust me on this.... Hey, maybe I should sing it too. Baby, I've been trying to tell you. La la la."
"Now, Lindsey, I'll have to put my foot down about this. We can use the guitar, but I'm singing the fookin' song, you hear me? I wrote the damn thing."
"OK, ok," he says, sly grin spreading across his face. He thinks: "I knew that would do it. She'll give me the guitar part if I let her have the vocals. Genius? Methinks."
[Tune in next week for another episode of TUSK: THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY. Mick returns from the drunk tank. What kick-ass percussion ideas will he have come up with in his drunken stupor? Will John get to practice his vocal parts? Will Christine agree to Lindsey's song arrangements? Don't miss a minute!]

[It's Thursday evening. Two songs are finished, and it has taken the band only three months to do them. Over drinks, and other substances, the band discusses the album's name]
Mick: Damn, man, I just spilled wine all over my tusk.
Christine: Your what?
Lindsey: Ha ha, it's his...
Stevie: Guys! Can you knock it off?
John: Pass me another, will you? Aahhh.
Mick hoists himself from the sofa, runs to the washroom.
Lindsey: We gotta come up with a name for this thing.
Christine: Well, of course we do, but shouldn't we record some more songs first?
Stevie: How about Ghost in the Cathouse?
Lindsey: Blaah... How about Total and Utter Nonsense?
Stevie: Well, how about The Biggest Guitar-Slinging Asshole in the World?
Lindsey: Oh, yeah? How about...
Christine: Kids, kids. Cut it out, will you?
John: Pass me another. (Belches thunderously.) A Thought bubble appears over his head: This rock 'n roll life is too rough. I oughta move to the Bahamas and open a boat charter business. Ooh, yeah, Bahama mama.
Lindsey: Where the hell's Mick? Hey, Mick, we gotta get back to work. I want to practice that riff I showed you yesterday. I've got some words too: "Why don't you tell me who's No. 1?" Thought bubble directly over his ego: Why, you, of course, Lindsey. "Why don't you tell me who's on the telephone? Toom tum toom. Ta tah ta."
Meanwhile, in the washroom, Mick stands in front of the mirror rehearsing his stage faces. He makes his eyes bulge out so far, they nearly crack the mirror.
Mick: Yeah, that was pretty good. Let's try raising my left brow up, up, up. Contorting the left corner of my mouth down, down... down. One more millimet... Ouch!
He walks back in, saying to himself: Tusk, he he, that's a good one. He sings: "Tusk, toom tu tum. Just tell me that you want me." Hey, that's pretty good. Lindsey. Hey, Liiiinndsey!! I just came up with a good lyric.
Lindsey: You did!? Look, let's go to the booth and work on that riff. You said you came up with a cool jungle beat.
[Two hours later, John, Lindsey and Mick have most of the song down.
Lindsey: Hey, why don't we call the song "Tusk?"
Mick: Excellent idea, lad. How about we call the whole album Tusk?
Lindsey: Yeah, good name for a song, but not an album. Pleeaase. How stupid...
Bubble over Mick's head: Little snot-nosed punk. Wouldn't know a good album name if it nipped him in the ego. Oh, yeah, note to self: When I get around to writing that book I've been planning, make sure to take the credit for this "Tusk" song.
[What will happen next? Will the album be named Tusk? Will Stevie and Lindsey get along? Will they EVER record any more songs for this thing? Find out in the next episode of Tusk: The Story Behind the Story.]

[It's early afternoon on a Sunday. Lindsey reclines on a chair in front of the boards. He has headphones on and taps his foot, grabs a pencil and starts drumming on the edge of the console. He gets up, stars jumping.]
"This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around," he shouts at the top of his lungs. "No time for dancin' or lovey dovey, I ain't got time for that now."
He grabs for a Telecaster leaning on a chair, and starts strumming the chords to the song. He now struts, now marches about the room jerking his head this way and that.
Mick walks in, stands watching his band made. Thought balloon over Mick's head: "How did I ever let this fruit in the band?"
Mick: "Lindsey. Lindsey. Hey, hello?"
Lindsey sees him, rips the headphones off his head, sets down the guitar and says: "Mick, have you heard these guys? They're fantastic." He sings: "Stop making sense, making sense." Thought balloon thought over Lindsey's head: "I ain't got time for that now. What a great line that is. Must use it somewhere."
Mick: "Well, that's great. Listen, mate, Stevie has a couple of songs I think you need to hear."
Lindsey: "All right, let's go."
They walk into a room draped in velvet. Candles sit on every available inch of space. It smells like church on Good Friday.
"Lindsey," Stevie says, "I got some songs." She gets up, does a couple of twirls...
"Can we just have the music?" Lindsey grows impatient.
"Lindsey, I must twirl in order to sing my songs right."
"All right, all right, let's hear them."
She sits at the Casio and hammers on some keys. Dissonant sounds tumble out of the little speaker. "Ooops, sorry, let's try that again." Then she starts to sing.
"Every night that goes between, I feel a little less, as you slowly..."
"Wow, that's really great," Mick interrupts.
"Hey, Mick, shut up. Let her sing," Lindsey says, growing even more impatient.
Stevie resumes singing. Mick's roadie walks up with a ladder, climbs and spills some Budweiser into the freakishly tall drummer's open mouth. Stevie finishes the song, says: "What do you think?"
"That's nice," Lindsey says. "I can already hear some swirly guitar parts in there."
Stevie leaps up, does a couple of twirls and squeals with excitement. "Now, listen to this one," she says.
"Wait a minute, baby. Stay with me a while, you said you'd give me light..."
After about 23 minutes of the song, Lindsey says, "That's a nice one, but we'll have to edit it down. Six minutes, tops."
Bubble over Stevie's head: "Over my dead, chiffon-draped body, you egotistical jerk."
[Will Stevie get the full song into the album? Will Lindsey finish any more of his own songs? And, where are John and Christine? Find out in the next episode of Tusk: The Story Behind the Story.]

'The Following events occur in a recording studio control room on a day of the Californian recording of Tusk.
[Back in the studio, sometime 1979....Mick has conveniently gone on hiatus. Blame Hawkeye;)]
Lindsey is fiddling at the control desk.
Christine is sitting in a corner reading her 'Brits in Exile Weekly' magazine. She looks at the magazine warmly and thinks to herself, "Lord it's good to read you, cause I'm far away from home!"
John is sitting in the opposite corner reading the label on his whisky bottle.
"Christine!" Stevie calls out as she swivels into the room with the phone. "There's a call for you. I think it's Deeeeniiiiis!" she adds teasingly.
Christine rotates her eyebrows and leaves with the phone. John raises his eyes nonchantly. Once he's satisfied Christine is gone, he races eagerly over to pick up the 'Brits in Exile' mag.
As Stevie moves into the room, she is inspired for lyrics for the fourth time that hour. "I know," she thinks to herself, "I can write a song about the story of a girl who walks into rooms! ...No wait... up stairs! Hang on, I know... hallways are good. Yeah, hallways! Or hallways with stairs! Do they have those??"
Mixed up in her dreamy inspiration, Stevie begins pirouetting on the spot. That's Lindsey's cue to get up and stalk out, emitting a disgruntled grunt. As he passes he quips, "You know if we needed the floor shined we could've hired a professional floor polisher guy!"
John looks up over the mag he's reading. "Actually Lindsey I just ordered them this morning."
"Ah, well, I guess you must have used the crystal ball instead of the white pages!" Lindsey mutters as he leaves.
Stevie dances herself out the doorway, recovering oh so gracefully from a slight altercation between a wisp of chifon and the heel of her shoe.
John, finally alone in the control room, discards Chris' magazine and heads for the recording decks. He inserts two tapes labelled in his own handwriting: "Classical bass" and "JJ McVie Croons to Mother's Favourite Ditties".
"Now for ....the splicing!" he murmurs triumphantly, which turns into a maniacal chortle as he picks up some scissors....
[Stevie is down at her local fancy dress shop. The owners love her - she keeps them in business!]
"Hi, look Fleetwood Mac have a special meeting with Warner Brothers tonight. I need these." She hands the attendant a list.
"Shawls of Shangrila No. 98... Children of Chiffon No. 16 .... OK, we should be able to manage that for you Ms Nicks."
"One more thing." Stevie gives the attendant a grimace, then hikes up her skirt to reveal a boot.
"Oh no, Ms Nicks, surely not. We've already given you five heel rises this week!"
Stevie gives her a dark look.
"But it's just not right, ms Nicks! I can't raise them any more! Please - think of your health!"
"Just..stop arguing and do it! I need it bad!!"
The attendant gives in and leads Stevie into a dodgy back room.
[Back in the studio. A few hours have passed. John is still industriously cutting and pasting cassette tape, and intermittently Stevie twirls in and out of the room.]
John hears someone come into the room. He fumbles and tries to cover up his secret work. "Hi Lind..." But as he turns around he sees it's Don Henley. "Oh, Don! Hallo."
"Hi John."
"So... um...how's The Long Run goin'?"
"OK. Pretty much the usual stuff, you know."
"Uh-huh."
Awkward pause.
"So...um, how's, er... What is it again?... 'Gust'? 'Musk'?"
"Tusk."
"Oh yeah. So it's going OK?"
"Yeah," John coughs nervously, "yeah ....it's OK. I guess."
Lindsey enters with Christine. They're both glancing over their shoulders occassionally to check that Stevie isn't spinning out of control towards him.
John and Don rush towards Lindsey, happy someone has broken the awkward spell. "Lindsey, mate! Great to see you!" "Lindsey, where've you been man." "You're the man!"
Lindsey has a sudden and unwelcome flash of prescience that this'll be the most accollades he'll ever recieve during his work on Tusk.
"Well," says Don, "if Stevie's not here I guess I'll get going. See y'all."
A few moments after Don has gone, Stevie tiptoes cautiously into the room. "Is Don gone?"
Lindsey looks around, stooping to peer under the control panel. "Doesn't seem to be here. Have you checked your cryst..."
"Cram it, baby."
"Stevie, luv, why are you avoiding Don?" asks Chrtistine.
"Oh you wouldn't believe this guy. He's so ... suffocating. It's like he wants to... be with my everywhere! I mean, don't get me wrong. he's a nice guy. Actually we are really good together in..."
"I DON'T WANNA KNOW!!" cries Lindsey quickly.
Dennis Wilson enters. "Honey hi!" cries Christine, leaping up to embrace him.
"Yeah, yeah, hi. Look I need some money for the parking meter."
"Oh, ok, um..." Christine gets out her purse and opens up her wallet.
Dennis reaches in and grabs her cheque book. "This'll do nicely. Thanks baby. See ya!" Dennis leaves.
John pulls Lindsey aside to have a quiet word. "Look about that Stevie. I'm afraid she's a bit of a nuter, lad. You really should get her to a shrink. While you were all out, she kept rolling in and out of here like a badly dressed ball of tumbleweed!"
Stevie hears all, and struts towards John. "For your information, I was refining my inspriation. I'm not gonna write just 'any' song about doorways and hallways and rooms. It has to be 'real'!" She turns on her heel and cocks an eye disparagingly in John's direction. "But I guess you wouldn't knowabout songwriting... You know, being a Bassist and all!" Stevie laughs sharply, and turns again on her heel. This is one turn too many for her over-elevated shoe support. She falls forwards and lands on all fours. "Hey," she thinks, unbelievably inspired again, "if i was wearing a red dress, and this floor was like a chess board, I could really see this working! Oh no, wait...add a giant mirror too!! Yeah!"
As Stevie crawls out, Christine remarks, "Hey are you alright luv? You know the first aid policy around here: If anyone falls..."
Stevie has another song inspiration! But it's one inspiration too many for that day and her brain rejects it. It manages to exert enough mental power to retain the lyrics for use in the distant future!
Christine goes outside to find Dennis. John is following her casually, then all three of them run into each other in the hall.
John is first to speak. "So, you're that guy from the Beach Bums aren't you."
Christine shoots John a warning stare.
John continues. "Oh sorry. So, um, are you the crazy one? Or.. no hang on, there's more than one isn't there!"
"John!" Christine reprimands.
"Don, look I told you. When you build your house I'll come by!!." She hangs up, but gets another call.
"Hey! Stevie! It's Mike, remember we used to go out in grade school? Well I've finally built my own house. So...I'm calling you home!"
After a slight shock, Stevie recovers, and her pragmatic side takes over:"Sorry...offer only valid six months!!"
[That evening at the Warner Bros shareholders meeting.]
Chariman. "Well, ladies and gentlemen, here I present... Fleeeeeetwoood ......MAAAAAAAAAAC!"
Committee members clap politely, as the Don't Stop chorus is played for the band's entry. John enters first, carrying a life-sized poster of Mick to get back at him for the Tusk video. Except there wasn't any cardboard pieces big enough for Mick's stature so he had to join two prints together. As a result, after the wear and tear of travel (despite Mick's poster naturally getting it's own limosuine) the head is slightly askew from the rest of the body.
Lindsey enters next in a suit. "Oh, he looks respectable," remarks one of the board members to another. Lindsey proceeds to light up a bong.
Stevie enters. The crowd recognizes their biggest cash cow and gives a standing ovation. Stevie delightfully runs forward and tries to twirl her twirliest twirl. Down she goes.
It might be the weed but Lindsey can't help laughing.
Chrisitne enters next but is overseen as all eyes focus on Stevie. Christine, the band's first aid officer, rushes over to help her up. She whispers to Stevie. "Did you hear about Dennis? He drowned!"
Stevie gasps. "Oh no! In the sea of love??"
Christine stares at her beguiled. "No!.. Just the regular sea!!"
The Chairman walks over to Lindsey. "I'd like to introduce Mr Watkins, he's Warner Bros' Market Research & Development Manager."
80-yr-old Mr Watkins adjusts his monocle and peers up over his walking frame at the poster of Mick. "Hello Mr Mac." He tries to shake the poster's hand unsuccessfully. "My, you should really see someone about that neck. I'll give you then name of my chiropractor. He did great things after my second hip replacement!"
[The finale to a long day!]
The Chairman: "Presenting: a sample of the epic, intelligent, and provoking new pioneering album from Warner Brother's greatest sons: Fleetwood Mac!" (Chairman: "Note to self: In future I probably shouldn't suggest that Brothers have sons!" The Chairman presses play on the tape deck.
[I]Lindsey's voice:
It's not that funny is it
When you don't know what it is
But you can't get enough of it
John's voice:
It is called 'Mum's Meaty Stew!"
John's voice impersonating a British bovine.
Don't....eat... me!
Pleease.....Please...Please!
John's voice impersonating his mother.
You'll eat it cause I said so.
You don't want to be thin, lad.
So don't make me, don't make me mad!
Lindsey looks across to John as the joint falls from his lips.
John grins sheepishly. "I told you I'd get my vocals in there!"
