The other day I saw him on VH-1 during Eminem's Ultimate Albums (btw, BLASPHEMY that 'Rumours hasn't been on yet)...What is he up to today? Is he his manager or something?

Nope..he is like assistant VP of that record company or something like that...a bigwig anyway..but not Eminem's manager...
tommer

it was probably because mr. iovine is nowdays the chairman of interscope records, which is the label that eminem is signed to.

That whole thing cracks me up,cause Jimmy produced Bella Donna..and now Eminem is on his label...i wonder if Stevie's listens to Eminem at all?? I think she'd fall over if she listened to the Marshall Mathers LP straight through...

I saw that on VH1 and kept thinking wow...this dude was with Stevie and worked on her albums, and now he's praising Eminem. Two TOTALLY different artists! I respect Eminem's right to free speech, he can say whatever he wants, he just can't DO whatever he wants (like the whole gun/wife thing). As long as he doesn't murder or rape anyone in REAL life, I say, leave the man alone, let him battle his demons his way. Don't listen if you don't like him. I wish people would leave rap artists alone and go find a molested child or a battered wife and protest for THEM!! They are the ones who need to have people speak up for their cause!! *Stepping down from soapbox* I don't say these things to offend anyone who doesn't like Eminem, I just wish this world was run differently is all. It's sad.
tommer
08-19-2002, 02:49 AM
the sad thing is that about 90% of eminem's fans are 10 year olds, we are old enough to accept his moronic behaviour in the right context, but those 10 year old fans get his 'message' without all those cynicism filters we acquired as adults. eminem is pure anti-social ****.
at least jimmy iovine can show off some good profits to his company's shares holders for spreading around this pollution.:distress:

I think it is sad that there are 10 year olds listening to Eminem..but again that really comes down to parental supervision..i mean his clean stuff is on the radio and that is ok..but for someone that young to listen to all of his albums is a little much.He has said that is not his target audience...and to quote one of his songs "You shoulda been watchin' them, apprently you ain't parents":distress: I realize parents can't moniter thier kids every second..but the more involved they are,the less likely it is that they will be exposed to negative stuff.

I'm no Eminem fan by any means, but anyone who thinks he has no talent is seriously mistaken.

Sarah, I totally agree... it's not like the musicians are the ones responsible for these kids.

enlighten me please then... what is his talent???
FiercestCalmSea

His talent is the ability to come up with lyrics like his..i mean...negative as they may be...no one has ever come up with stuff like that before...what is amazing is that he just comes up with it off the top of his head...he is as prolific as Stevie, just on the other end of the spectrum.

he puts all his emotions in his music. he's telling the story of his life, not just talking out his ass. and most of the things he says are true. these so called "parents" go after him with blow torches and knives, but let their 12 year old daughters where MAKEUP! i think they need to get their minds right! when i was 12 my mom wouldn't even let me where colored lipgloss! it's not appropriate! and let me just tell you, the songs on the radio that i hear these kids singing today, i could and would NEVER SING! thong song!? are you kidding me? i'd get my mouth washed out with soap! is it sisqo's fault? hell no! it's the parents fault! you have to raise your kids, not these artists!!!!!! i like eminem! actually i think he's cute. and after hearing his new single, "cleaning out my closet", i really really want to give this guy a hug! his mom did him totally dirty! and ppl wonder why he right's like he does!!!!!!!

Well, color me seriously mistaken, then. I think on another Ledge people were arguing the definition of true talent. I think Eminem falls very short, not only because he disgusts me personally, but because he simply has no substance - not unlike the boy groups he likes to make fun of.
I think it's not too hard to prolifically whine and insult people. But, well, he ryhmes. Whoopee.

Wasn't Lindsey quoted in one of his interviews about dealing with his record label as saying something like, "Thank God for people like Eminem." And going on to say he was glad there are artists out there doing what he does?
It really shocked the stuffing out of me at first, but you know our anti-establishment Linds!

Heck, I think he was just saying that to be politically correct and prove a point. I could understand if he said he liked him, but instead he said he was doing something "really important." I guess that means that his existence as a disgusting artist who people want to censor makes him "really important" because he can help demonstrate that no one, no matter how gross, should be censored. I bet he'd say the same thing about Marilyn Manson or anyone who might be censored.
Mimi: You're right. I'm totally not into rap or hiphop, although a couple times I've heard a good song and bought the single. Never a full album, though. But I can still recognize there's a lot of talent there, just like I do for other genres I don't like as rule. However, I think Eminem is an embarrasment even to the rap/hiphop genre.
Notice a lot of "I think"s there! While I feel really strongly about Eminem's lameness, I guess it's all about where your interests lie. My sister despises FM, can you imagine?!
By the way, I'd like to add that my dislike of Eminem is not a criticism of those who like him, so I hope nobody takes it personally.

I hate Marylnd Manson so much it isn't even funny. but eminem is the ONLY rap/hip hop artist i like. he is a dirty Stevie, when it comes to writing. . i don't own any of his albums, but i love his singles. Without me was a super song. Cleaning out my closet was even better. And his old songs like Stan and whatever you say i am were very good too. but i'm sure the non-singles would be a bit too much for me but i think he's great.

Exactly, a "dirty" Stevie, in that he can phrase stuff so well and his lyrics are so "unique"-sounding. I also believe he has geniune love for his daughter, Hallie. Just wish he and Kim could have worked it out. Oh well...

an "embarrassment"? WOW! but hey that's how you feel and that's totally cool! i like him cause he says what he thinks and feels. he doesn't bite his tongue. i think it's sexy kinda  could you imagine him on the ledge!!!? BANNED!!!!
anyhoo, ok i c your point and i understand where you're coming from. but, i think he is a real talent. he has so much wrapped up inside of him and he knows how to put it down on paper. i wish i had that ability.

exactly!
stop comparing eminem to stevie nicks!
this guy represents unreasonable hatered, violence, animosity and total lack of any musical talent whatsoever.
the way i look at it he represents everything stevie's music stands AGAINST.

I think that Eminem has talent, or at least a knack for writing. I just wish he would "use his powers for good." I can't get behind someone who seems all about misogyny, homophobia and ignorance. I don't listen to a whole lot of hip-hop, but I have one of Ice-T's albums and although he raps about violence, most of it is empowering. I don't get a sense that Eminem wants to improve the world. I get that sense from Ice-T. OF course Eminem isn't required to be interested in improving the world, but I wish at least he wouldn't add to the rampant hatred in the world.

Sugar, I tend to agree with you, though I think there has been a fair amount of misunderstanding about Eminem's lyrics. While in one song he may seem to be bashing gay people, in another he's saying, hey you're gay and that's OK. Go figure. I think he takes on these different characters when he writes the songs. A lot of great songwriters have done that. Think Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle and John Prine.
The unfortunate outcome of this, in Eminem's case, is a lot of kids who misinterpret the words end up acting up thinking they are being cool. I do wish Eminem would put his amazing wordsmithing talents to a more positive use. But then again, his music might not be as powerful.
Though they are vastly different, a pairing of Eminem and Stevie might actually be interesting. I suggested in another thread that she should work with him. I was jesting, but now I'm starting to think about it more seriously...

but see that's the thing, he and other artist like himself put out there what PEOPLE DON'T WANNA HEAR! ppl don't like to hear about all that bad things in the world. they want the n'syncs and backstreetboys sings about love, flowers, birds and ****. and that's just the truth. they don't want some kid coming out with an album and saying, "how f*cking dare you tell me what i can't and can say when your 11 yr old daughter is having sex!" and he's absolutley right! and this is y i like eminem and other artists like him. i applaud him and hope he keeps righting and making parents upset. UPSET that their kids are hearing some things that are actually very true. now the homophobia.......i'm not down for that cause i think it's silly. and i don't think he is homophobic at all! i think he doesn't like it, doesn't want to take part in it and that's totally his right and cool. i also think that when he calls someone the "f" word, he's saying that that person is a coward, a sissy, not disrespecting them by saying that that person is GAY! nor is he making fun of gay ppl! do you know what i'm trying to say? i call this guy on my job terry a "f" everydamnday!!! and i do it cause he works my last damn nerve! he's annoying, ugly and he is a punk ass coward! he kisses ass like you wouldn't believe and it's disgusting!!!
oh well that's my opinion on that.

Ty,
I kinda resent you insinuating that all I want is some pollyanna world represented in art. It's one thing to put forth what is wrong with the world and it's another to buy into it, which is the point I was trying to make. I think the use of the "F" word (as you put it) is as irresponsible as using the "N" word. And I know people who will give me the EXACT same rationale for using the "N" word you just gave for using the "F" word. There's plenty of ways to say that a person is lazy, or stupid, or a coward or whatever. But when you CHOOSE to use a word that is so inexorably linked with the subjagation of a group of people, you're perpetuating the negative stereotype. And I think that's irresponsible, not just for rock stars, but for anyone. I have no problem with an artist expressing that life is crap and unfair and that there's a lot of crappy people in the world that would do the world a service by swallowing a bullet. Who doesn't know that? My issue is that his choice seems to be to perpetuate it rather than improve it. I mean, if your life was so crappy that you feel thae need to shout it to the world, WHY would you want to perpetuate that for the next kid? If Eminem got smacked around too much as a kid, why make it sound cool to smack people around? Stevie on the other hand (had to get her in afterall) not only chooses not to use words like that (publicly anyway) but always has some sense of hope in her songs. A sense of fighting through the bad and remaining intact, if tattered.
And why you think it's cool (not unfortunate or misunderstood) that he upsets parents is just beyond me. I mean, talk about shooting fish in a barrel.
Carne, I can only hope that his inconsistencies are attributable to some personal growth on his part.
And that's just MY opinion...

ok i think we're gonna need to stop talking about this right now. so i'm not going to say anything else about this. "N" word? i'm not gonna go there with you. so whatever.
now............upsets his parents? you've got to be kidding me? have you ever listened to what he has to say? have you ever heard this man story? upset his parents? guess you've never been there before. and i'm guessing that you have no idea what he's feeling at all, but again, WHATEVER.
oh and another thing......like i've said before, it is not his responsiblity what child listens to what. he is not that child's PARENT!
u know this totally kills me on this board. i constantly have to repeat myself over and over and over again! wtf!?
oh well, i'm done talking about this with you. "N" word? you're too funny!

There's no point continuing this. You missed my point about three times (now I know what you mean about having to repeat yourself numerous times for people to understand what you mean. That's what I would have to do for you to get how you misunderstood nearly everything I said). Your second and third paragraphs are saying I said things I never said. I even re-read my post so see if I worded something oddly. I have no idea where you got that I was talking about his parents specifically or or trying to shift the blame about what a child listens to, because I actually agree with you, it IS a parent's responsibility.
Also, I was trying to respectfully disagree with you, and you come back with "whatever" and "you're too funny?" I guess I was hoping you'd respect in kind. :distress:
