So I just saw that Rhino is rereleasing the 1988 Greatest Hits on vinyl AND CD, with several more tracks added, such as the Chain, Silver Springs live, Think About Me, Never Going Back Again, Oh Diane, Landslide, and a few more. Noticeably NOT included are any singles released from Behind the Mask or Time, or even any of the 4 new songs from The Chain boxset. So unfortunately, Christine gets the short end of the stick here.

This is about 20 years overdue. How they left off Think About Me on the original is a crime. The song is not even 3 minutes and it could not fit? You can hear the live version of Silver Springs on The Dance. They should have included the studio version. But all of you Seven Wonders fans shall rejoice! But at least Oh Diane made the cut

Notice they didn't include Sweet Girl, Temporary One, Bleed To Love Her, Say You Will, Peacekeeper, Sad Angel, or Without You either.

Well, it was that or the two hundred and seventy-fourth special edition of Rumours.

As a fan, there are several singles I would have included. But I don't know if they should be considered "hits". Though I wouldn't buy it anyway, cause I think I have all songs and repeated. Unless they were unreleased/demo/alternative/early versions. Because that's usually what you'd find in a DELUXE edition, which doesn't seem to be the case this time.

Why is Love In Store neglected again? It was the third single from a #1 album. It charted rather well for not having a video in the peak MTV era. It hit #22 for 3 weeks

Mirage had songs cockblocked like crazy. Hold Me 7 weeks at #4. Gypsy 3 weeks at #12 and Love in Store 3 weeks at #22 which made these singles much bigger than their chart peaks.

BTW. I see that Stevie's rehab during Gypsy's video shoot made Wikipedia. She could not get through the shoot without cocaine and the shoot could not be rescheduled. She had a miserable experience making the video.

Nicks especially remembers the experience as unpleasant. Two weeks before the shoot, she had gone into drug rehabilitation to try to overcome her cocaine addiction. However, the video shoot could not be rescheduled, and she had to take a break for it. Near the end of the first of three days of the shoot, Nicks was exhausted and said she needed cocaine. A small bottle was discreetly given to her, though it was thrown out before she could use any. Nicks later said, "I think we would probably have gone on to make many more great videos like 'Gypsy' had we not been so into drugs."[21]

The aforementioned issues Nicks was having were further strained by having to work closely with her former boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham. "We weren't getting along well then. I didn't want to be anywhere near him; I certainly didn't want to be in his arms," Nicks said of the scene where the two are dancing. "If you watch the video, you'll see I wasn't happy. And he wasn't a very good dancer."[21] In 1983, the music video received an award of Special Merit during the American Video Awards.[22]

Stevie hated dancing with Lindsey. Now I want to know who threw out the bottle of cocaine? We need answers!!!!!

I agree that they weren't Fred and Ginger at all. But they didn't seem inevitably unhappy (while dancing) to me. I've always interpreted the lyrics as something nostalgic, and in the ochre and the b/w scenes from bygone eras, she appears serious or melancholic; even the woman serving from the pot is from the Great Depression of '29 so her gestures made sense to me and confirmed my perception of the lyrics. So, their serious faces while dancing seemed to fit the scene. Contrary to the last colorful scene in that fantasy forest, where she dances and there she does seem more cheerful.

Who threw away the bottle of cocaine? Was it to purposely mess with her or try and get her sober?
She was jetting all over the place in 1981 but almost impossible to get clean during a major album promotion and upcoming tour.
Lesson learned. No wonder they stayed separate and filmed alone during the Hold Me video. I also think the Mirage tour left a bad taste in Lindsey's mouth and did not want to repeat it with Tango even though it was originally also going to be a short US tour.

Should not a Greatest Hits package include the hits?

That's why he should have said NO to the tour from the start and not agreed to those 8 weeks at any point. I'll make the album with you guys to help Mick, but no tour. If you don't like it, goodbye.

I think the part of him that was doing it to get Mick out of bankruptcy wanted to do as much as possible. He probably probably reluctantly agreed but then the reality hit him that he could not do it. But you are right, he should have been upfront. Chris said in an interview in late 1987 that was what the Little Lies were. They knew he wanted to leave but never came out to declare it. Always very coy. In late spring 1987 there was a national broadcast promoting Tango with all the members. It was on radio stations all over the United States. At the end they asked Lindsey about touring. He gave a very evasive answer which hinted there could be a tour but he did not say "we are hitting the road for a few months." I think he thought he could do it until he couldn't.

I agree that Save Me, at least, should have been included. And I would imagine that since this is a rerelease, they wanted to only add songs, not subtract any, which is why As Long As You Follow and No Questions Asked were included. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a true rerelease.

I guess they included As Long As You Follow and No Questions Asked because they took the original GH and said Ok, for a deluxe edition let's take the original and just add more songs.

But whoever decided the final tracklist should have awakened more of their neuronas and make it better. Well, I'm a bit sarcastic, cause it's also true that you can't please everybody. For example, I'm not crazy about "Save Me." Whether they include it or not wouldn't affect me (if I wanted to buy this album). But other songs would.

I am not crazy about Greatest Hits packages. However if you have a "Greatest Hits" should you not include the hits i.e. meaning songs that were released as singles or charted? Of course you can include the songs like Landslide and The Chain that were not officially released as singles but still receive classic rock airplay. I know they cannot remove songs since it would not be a re-release. But charting songs should be included. After The Glitter Fades and Nightbird should of been on Timespace. I dont like Nightbird but realize it was a top 40 hit.
First world problems I know. But this highlights the oddity of ignoring the Vito/Burnette era of the band. They cannot remove No Questions Asked but cant inclued Save Me?
Never Going Back Again?

However if you have a "Greatest Hits" should you not include the hits i.e. meaning songs that were released as singles or charted?

That is THE question, along with How do you know what songs are considered “the very best”?

Just for example, I remember local radios played some B sides of Donna Summer singles much more than the actual single. Like Winter Melody(side B) much more than Spring Affair (the official single). But none of those two were included in On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II.

And talking about “the best”, I was checking the US 2002 release and UK 2009 re-release of “The Very Best Of”, they did include ALAYF, NQA, Skies the Limit and Paper Doll.

And 50 Years – Don't Stop is a compilation album that seems more like a box set than a GH (there’s a difference) cause they did included Save Me, Peacekeeper, Love Shines, but... no BTM songs of Rick or Billy.

Answer: Money, money, money! Must be funny in the rich man's world.

Save Me and Paper Doll were both big hits in Canada making it into the top 10.

My Theory is that this is an easy way to get a "new" cheaper vinyl best of album out there to make more money from. I think the CD version is a bit of an afterthought. Don't Stop 50 Years does have all the tracks on this comp but at a 5 LP set it's going to be more expensive than this.

Although i'd still probably buy a proper FM singles collection compilation if ever they decided to release it.

The Greatest Hits Deluxe Edition will be released July 31.

Since Deluxe Editions always included demos in the past, I’m kind of surprised Paper Doll didn’t make the cut, as it was originally recorded for the GH album, only to be replaced by No Questions Asked. Apparently, Mick sent Paper Doll to Lindsey and asked him to do what he could do with it, so he made whatever changes he did and it was released on the Chain box set. Would have been nice to have either the before or after version included here.

I agree that Love in Store should have been included. There was certainly room for it. I suspect the preponderance of Christine and Stevie songs are why those two songs weren’t included, and a desire to include more Lindsey songs were why Oh Diane and Never Going Back Again were placed instead. I get it.

The fact that Save Me wasn’t included gives me hope that Behind the Mask will get a Deluxe Edition at some point. Yes, I’m admittedly biased about that prospect, as I love that album, but if they’re doing a Deluxe Edition of their GH, then they are clearly desperate to milk their legacy for all they can. They may release a DE of Say You Will, but with 18 songs, there probably aren’t a lot of extras, and a live CD/DVD was already released of that album/tour. The Dance will probably be next, and then hopefully BTM and Time will be rereleased together.

I agree. Warners knows there isn’t any money to be made in putting a BTM or Time deluxe edition out.
They didn’t place any Billy, Rick, Bekka, or Dave songs on the 2018 50 Years “compilation.”

But I would even say that it’s more likely that Heroes Are Hard To Find would get a deluxe edition release than BTM getting one given how Mick, John, Christine, and Stevie never spoke about the songs from that album from 2018 on. But yet they performed a song written by Welch. Of course they also did a song written by Danny and a number of songs by Peter.

That expanded edition was released the same time as the ‘regular’ version of the album. It has neat packaging as well, but I wouldn’t say it’s a Deluxe Edition. At least not in the way the other FM Deluxe Editions were presented.

One cool thing about the Greatest Hits DE is that the label isn’t combining the vinyls and CDs in one package.

I understand Behind the Mask was not a hit. However, it did go gold, and maybe even platinum. Say You Will charted much higher, but probably sold about the same as BTM. Most of the pre-Buckingham Nicks albums barely went gold, and the label repackaged them a few years back. Maybe the most I can hope for is a remaster, but there’s enough material to add an extra disc. With the label rereleasing every album, I don’t believe they won’t rerelease an album with Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks.

BTM did go platinum in the UK. There is that photo of the band receiving their platinum record in the UK. BTM was #1 in the UK and Greece. It was top 10 throughout Europe and Australia. However barely cracked the top 20 in the states.

More than asking why they left this or that song.. I wonder who defines the tracklist for a compilation album?
This can be divided into two questions: Who is involved in the song selection and putting together the list? And... who makes the final decision?

I was listening to a music vlogger today that is speculating the re-release of the Greatest Hits package is the groundwork for a Fleetwood Mac reunion. Lindsey has dropped many hints about playing the Forum again, etc. This could be another reason why the Hits release is loaded up with more Lindsey tunes while ignoring charting singles of Chris.
I am already cringing hearing Stevie butcher Don't Stop
And how the look during Silver Springs is going to mean Stevie and Lindsey are back in love.
If they do Oh Diane this board will light up like a Christmas Tree.
They will milk this for all that its worth. Mick will have his tin can ready for the $1000 meet and greets and selling replicas of Biddy's britches.

I think that rumour, and consequently the wish of many fans, will never end. And it's true that Lindsey is nurturing it.

I hope they've realized that this would further damage the legacy that's already been damaged since 2018.

Organizing a tour, playing Christine's songs, etc., No no. I don't see that as a good idea To say the least.

That "rock star" topic has been mentioned thousands of times about Stevie. Yes I agree she wanted to be a star from the fist. Christine never wanted. But Lindsey? I've never seen him as a rock star. Refusing to make a Rumours 2, when the whole band was seen as a star, was the first sign that he didn't want to be one. His entire career path differs greatly from that of a typical rock star.

And now he supposedly wants to be a rock star? I don't think so. Too late by the way. I think he simply wants to stay active, and if he is seriously thinking about reunions, I wouldn't rule out a financial motive as well.

oh make no bones about it....he wants to be and loves being a rock star.

his definition of that is different than Stevie's but he loves the big life.

Mick hit the nail on the head in the Destiny Rules doc when he had that discussion with Lindsey where LB went on about how he didn't care about how many copies the album would sell as long as he got to make his artistic vision...and then later Mick is talking to one of the crew (I think it was Ray Lindsey) and saying that he (Mick) does not for one minute believe that Lindsey wouldn't be upset if the album didn't sell. Mick called out Lindsey for comparing himself to a film director who makes films that are great but don't sell a lot. Mick cracked that unlike that director Lindsey would NOT be happy in a one bedroom apartment in Pacoima. And Mick was right. Lindsey lived/lives a very very rich person life. His homes are LUXE. And he's made very lucrative real estate investments in LA over the decades.

What he wants from FM isn't the money as much as the prestige, the success, to still be a "player" in the biz, to be recognized for his musical genius..... to cement his legacy with a big blowout and not a quiet fading away. And he wants to compete with Stevie, always has.

I saw Lindsey's solo tour in 2018 and I was in the front row. He played so incredibly hard and sweat was coming off him like crazy. His facial expressions were like nothing I saw from him before. It was almost if he was an unknown auditioning to join a band or something. To say he gave 110% would be an understatement. He was playing for just a few hundred fans and he was thriving off the audience. Long story short......I don't know when it happened but Lindsey really gets off on being a rock star. Yes in the past he hated the machine and performing for the masses may not have been his thing. He said he much preferred the studio. But SYW and beyond Lindsey is a different man than he was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Yes, my idea of a star more or less coincides with the image Stevie used to project. That is to say, beyond promoting his albums on the Letterman show or similar, I don't remember seeing photos of Lindsey at Studio 54, nor a venturing into film, or seeing his name mentioned in many supposed romances (well, apart from the well-worn soap with Stevie).

Perhaps it's a paradigm I have, but if I compare Lindsey with Prince, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Ozzy, Cher, Madonna, David Lee Roth or Elton, I can't say Lindsey is a star like them; a quality that does not define whether the musical artistic talent is very good or not. And I see my paradigm coincides with a definition I just found, a description that Stevie does come close to:

Historically and culturally, a rock star is someone who embodies the glamorous and often rebellious lifestyle of rock 'n' roll.

The Persona: They are often seen as sexy, outrageous, and unapologetic.

The Archetype: While the genre has evolved, the iconic image typically involves a dynamic frontman or lead guitarist leading a stadium performance, backed by dedicated fans and intense media attention. (ok Lindsey fits in here, except for the media attention, I don't think it is that intense)

Famous Examples: Iconic rock stars include figures like Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger

I think he also fits the unapologetic quality too.

But I agree, the intense media scrutiny isn't the same with him. He can in fact walk down a street and most people not know who he is (he did that a lot on his solo tours). Fans of course will recognize him and maybe approach him, but not screaming hordes.

but i thought he's taken to wearing various different wedding rings, to throw off the press so they won't catch on that he's actually divorced and with stevie..?! because otherwise the press would be *hounding* him!

:laugh: has anyone else seen that nutty shipper theory?

on a more serious note, i think Stevie and mick were always the most recognizable and enjoyed being that way. Lindsey and john could probably go anywhere and not be bothered at all. Chris maybe fell somewhere in the middle.

I see all of them kind of being "unapologetic" but i guess i don't see that as a "rock star" quality, but maybe just something we feel more of as we age and feel content with the decisions we've made in life, because there's no going back to change them.

but i thought he's taken to wearing various different wedding rings, to throw off the press so they won't catch on that he's actually divorced and with stevie..?! because otherwise the press would be *hounding* him!

Shippers are really chiffons in disguise! hahaha and they are absolutely nuts and cult like.

I agree that Love in Store should have been included. There was certainly room for it. I suspect the preponderance of Christine and Stevie songs are why those two songs weren’t included, and a desire to include more Lindsey songs were why Oh Diane and Never Going Back Again were placed instead. I get it.

No question - Love In Store was a hit and should be on this. I, too, agree that it (and a few other Christine singles) were sacrificed so that Lindsey could have more of a presence; however, this is a classic case of revisionist history. If a title is "Greatest Hits", then the product has been clearly defined - it's about hits, and, without question, Christine was the hit maker in Fleetwood Mac.

That's why I still believe that the best FM compilation is 2002's "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" - it's not confined by being a singles collection and, aside from a few questionable track choices (edits of the live versions, going into BTM era songs) and a few omissions (ex. "Isn't It Midnight"), it's a wonderful listening experience both in terms of sequencing and mastering.

Those suggesting that this new GH release is linked with an upcoming reunion may be on to something, though I happen to think it's only because there's been an uptick in interest in "Silver Springs" recently online and Warner/Rhino wants to capitalize on this.

I didn't know that. Well I don't use Spotify or other online platforms. Google AI says the song has amassed nearly 464 million streams on platforms like Spotify and officially reached platinum status, following a massive streaming and chart resurgence.

Classics Dreams, GYOW or Everywhere surpasses a billion. That's no surprise, but the studio version of Big Love has approximately 142.7 million streams. I thought it would have more than SS.

Big Love only did well because of the video and it was the first hit off the album, after the longest FM break between albums. It really didn't do much after it's release, like Everywhere and LL. (Which you can't get away from these songs, today.)

Seven Wonders isn't heard as much either. It did blow up during the TV show. But then it was dropped and faded away. I do hear Seven Wonders once in a blue moon on Sirius XM.

That's true. "The primary version of Fleetwood Mac's "Seven Wonders" on Spotify—the 2017 Remaster from the album Tango in the Night—has been streamed approximately \(210.6\) million times". I don't know how accurate is that info but it makes sense.

Definitely the Tango album was Christine's moment, in terms of singles and popularity.

Correct!
Big Love made it to #5 which is a huge hit. However of all the hits of the 1980s its a song you never hear anymore even on 80s channels. Its one of those hits that climbed the charts and then sort of disappeared. This is why I wish Isn't It Midnight was the first single. After waiting 5 years for a new Mac song it would have cracked the top 10. Seven Wonders? Forget about it. It barely cracked the top 20. However Everywhere which only made it to #14 in the States is still regularly heard. They had to share the wealth I suppose because the first 3 singles from Tango could of been Chris songs. Speaking of Chris its sad they limit her hit success on the new Greatest Hits release to include fewer known songs by Stevie and Lindsey just to share the scene so to speak.
Big Love was pretty much a Lindsey solo song on the album. But Lindsey devoted so much time to the album how could you not give him the lead off single.

So it was just released yesterday. 9 Christine songs out of 23. 8 Stevie's, 5 Lindsey's. And The Chain.

I would have released Eyes of the World as a single instead of Oh Diane in 1982. I think EOTW was his best Mirage song.

If someone buy it, tell us if there are cool not already known pictures in the cd book, or LP sleeves.

Just got my CD version and will listen shortly. Don't expect to hear many differences in terms of what's already been out there. The silver lining around the cover is humorous given the things that have happened with this band, particularly in the past 10 or so years. One thing I noticed and maybe I'm reading too much into this is the big photo of the band in the room with Billy and Rick which is on the back of the LP is relegated to the pithy booklet. For what's supposed to be a "Deluxe Edition" I would expect a bigger booklet that would at least help explain why it was necessary to expand an greatest hits album that's nearly 40 years old.

As far as the photo, I think it would have been fit nicely as the centerpiece between the two discs since it is a tri-fold digipak. I can see not having it on the back since it has the playlist for both discs.

Also something kind interesting but not that important, As Long As You Follow clocks in on the Deluxe Edition at 4:09 compared to the original release at 4:10. No Questions Asked is 4:42 compared to the original at 4:41. I didn't check the time comparisons of the other songs on Disc 1.

No Questions Asked??? REALLY????

I think Lindsey did himself no favors in a way stripping BigLove down to an acoustic live version taking the "ensemble piece and making it a solo piece" because it let the FM version just fade away.

At this point it feels like more people love and know and respond to Holiday Road than the full production of Big Love and that's a real shame. [ETA no I am NOT suggesting Holiday Road should be on the FM greatest hits rofl)

And don't forget one of the initial attention-getting factors on the FM version was the grunts that got everyone guessing who made them...and speculating it was Stevie ROFL

and no Second Hand News?? But Sandy Stewart made it with Seven Wonders??

I really don’t get this release. The versions of Very Best of…. pretty much cover all bases so I’m not really sure of the need to update GH. Other than an opportunity to eke out a few extra bucks.

I've heard that song so few times that I don't even remember what it sounds like anymore. But it's in the original release so I think it's right that they're including it in this.

They should have included Save Me. And also any single from the SYW album, though there were no "hits" from that album. Even Save Me could not be considered a hit (if there is a unique definition of hit) but at least I think it reached the top 40.

I sense some bias against Chris because she had most of the hits. So they included the live version of Big Love instead of the studio version?

I get they included Oh Diane since it was a hit in the UK. But how do they leave off Love In Store and Save Me. Both were released as singles and charted well into the top 40.
Why the live version of Silver Springs? You can get that on The Dance. I think if you include Silver Springs it should be the B side version.

They were pressed with space on the original with only being one disc. A few missed opportunities IMHO.
