Is that not what they promised would happen someday?
52 years to get the reissue of the album. You think people are searching for demos and extras?
This should have been reissued in the 1980s. Stevie has always said she never understood why it was not reissued.
I think its borderline troll to complain there's no extras.
But I love you anyway Steve.

Eh, I guess.

It’s just that Rhino reissues are usually more robust packages.

I agree. Not to mention all the hype that preceded the news of the rerelease. I guess I expected more based on all that. I think everyone, including Stevie and Lindsey’s handlers, were probably surprised at the huge reaction their social media posts received. I hope Rhino will at least include a booklet with photos and interviews.

I agree, I was hoping for more too. I think given the fact these two haven't spoken (to our knowledge), in almost a decade, and they've scorched each other in the press, their teams knew exactly the kind of reaction the social media posts were going to receive, particularly by having Mick kick it all off. They certainly have great marketing teams working for them!

Lets have 9 remixes of Stephanie

I think remixes or demos would distract from the album. I want to hear its crisp original sounds on CD. The way it was released. Keep the original album cover too. I want to pretend its 1973 all over again. The excitement is the original album is being issued in original form. Putting the gloss of 2025 on the album sort of ruins it for me. Some want a new album cover with a new Stevie? That makes no sense. I also dont want anything re-recorded. Please let me enjoy this the way it was released without the demands of what clever record companies do to older albums trying to make a buck.

I am curious. Does anyone here own an original Buckingham Nicks album? I know there are countless bootlegs but originals are rare. You can import the bootleg album from Japan easily. I imagine the collectors hate this reissue because it hurts the value of their own. For example, this original sealed cassette of Buckingham Nicks is for sale on Ebay for $100.00

Aren't all those bootlegs? You can get a bootleg of just about anything. I have Christine McVie live in concert in Jackson NJ. Professional sound but its a bootleg and nothing official. Most Buckingham Nicks stuff for sale on the internet are bootlegs. This release is completely different in that its original.

The “Big Pink” bootleg release sounds amazing and is clearly not sourced from vinyl. It also included bonus material. So many folks already have this. Rhino will probably do really well on the vinyl reissue, but they’re really falling short on the CD/Digital editions if it’s only the album and no extras.

I always see that for sale on Ebay imported from Japan. I wonder myself. If its not sourced from vinyl what do you think its sourced from? Someone snuck out the tapes from Polydore?
Do you own it? Did you see my link from above a sealed Buck/Nicks cassette goes for $100. But that price is soon to drop.

Yes I own the big pink release. I can’t confirm any of this but it’s been said that a flat transfer of the masters was done when they initially thought of releasing it back in 2013. Allegedly a CD of that flat transfer got into the wrong hands and is actually the source for at least one of the bootlegs floating around.

It would not surprise me if they could only agree on the album as the release. Earlier, Lindsey had said that he thought that the album itself was too short for a CD release and that additional materials should be included, but the popularity of collectible, high quality vinyl, plus the digital release platform probably superseded that concern.

Any of the unreleased demos probably belong to each individual songwriter, and I can't see Stevie agreeing to include them on BN without demanding more $$$. Given how much she has relied on reviving old demos in recent years, she may still use them at some point, or at least want the possibility. And I can imagine both of them being unwilling to release the live shows unless they were happy with the sound quality -- given where they were in their careers, they didn't have the same level of sound production for the shows as they did even with earlier FM (where Mick would release anything that got some $$$). Whatever the reason, it seems 100% likely that they would disagree on everything other than the original album, and that's only because objectively, the original is what it is.

As much as the idea of them touring or doing any kind of joint activity to promote this release was in everyone's speculation, the truth is that they probably can't stand each other -- this was probably negotiated and executed by the management teams, including the negotiated PR rollout. They may be better off not doing any press around this other than prepared and negotiated statements, because neither of them can just say something decent and leave out the barbs against each other if asked live.

I'm glad this happened while they were both alive though. And if their relationship is as bitter and sniping as we have seen in the last 7 years (and longer), I hope they don't ruin it by doing what they usually do.

Can someone explain to me why so many of you jump to definitive conclusions? Just because the Rhino release only features the remastered songs from the 1973 release, then that subsequently means there will be no other promotion for the album? Sure that could be the case, but it makes no sense that you would stage social media and physical media promotion two months prior to the release, include the founding member of Fleetwood Mac in that promotion, and schedule 3 weeks off for Stevie's tour during the peak promotion period, and have no additional album release promotional activities.

All this original post refers to is the tracks on the remastered release. No one is wrong here and no one is right, but the assumptions that people jump to as conclusive are a bit much.

I for one think there will be additional promotion and there will be appearances. What shape those take, I don't know. But this is a money making opportunity, and in my opinion, Steve, Lindsey, Mick, and Irving are likely to want to do their best to maximize that potential.

Well...we've had 40+ years of foreplay regarding the eventual release of this album and we didn't even get the original version of Without You cleaned up. I can understand if there's a little bit of disappointment and skepticism if this is the entire enchilada. If that's the case, I'm shocked they spent the money for the billboard.

Stevie has already performed Crying In The Night, Lindsey has already done Stephanie. Crystal and Races Are Run could be done with just an acoustic guitar and minimal backing instruments. There's plenty of material they could do together live - but I'm not convinced it's going to happen.

Imagine Lindsey and Stevie on Marc Maron's podcast? - it would be crazy cool, but Stevie isn't about to leave her beach condo to hang out in somebody's garage. Can you imagine that trio of personalities!?

I agree with you, nobody is right and nobody is wrong. But are you not also jumping to conclusions. What if there is no other promotion for the album? Stevie is on tour and maybe their only promotion were those cryptic tweets. Its not like they are instantly going on the Tonight Show next month or something.
Long term maybe something will happen where they perform again. But what IF its finally released and then nothing? Both Stevie and Lindsey sold the rights to their songs so I doubt they are doing this for the money.
I do agree, we are all just speculating. But I think some speculation went too far with new album covers, remixes, released singles, performances together, etc.
Its quite possible the album is released and that's that. I highly doubt their motivation for release was for money and they are looking to capitalize this for new fame and fortune.

The funny thing is if you read the recent interview with the Smithsonian, he actually doesn’t remember the sequence of events. That story evolved over the years that it kind of became the standard response. But Mick’s 1990 version and Keith’s 2011 version perfectly align. The offer was always for both.

I did not jump to any conclusions. I wrote above, "I think"and "in my opinion." No part of that is a conclusion or a definitive statement. Just my opinion. I interpreted much of what has been written to be definitive statements and I thought that was a bridge too far.

With this group of people, I always tend to believe money is a motivator. Maybe I am just jaded… Let's see what happens between now and then, and hey, at least we have something to talk about.

Nah. Keith Olsen didn’t need to worry about Stevie’s graces in 2011. He had a pretty epic career by then.

“I told him I wanted Lindsey Buckingham to be the new guitarist in Fleetwood Mac, and what did he think? Olsen replied that Lindsey was part of a team, the other half of which was his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks. They had a band called Buckingham Nicks and were very much a pair. Keith said he didn't think Lindsey would be interested in joining Fleetwood Mac without Stevie. Without hesitating, I told him that I wanted them both. Then I called Mickey Shapiro and said, "I met these guys and am asking them to be in the band."” -Mick Fleetwood, 1990

“Then I got a call on New Year’s Eve, and Mick says, “I’ve had some bad news. Bob Welch just decided to leave the band. So, that fellow in that band you played me—would you see if that guy would like to join my band?” And I said, “Well, they’re going to come as a set. Because they’re very much into their own thing, and the only chance of getting them to drop that would be to bring them both on.” And he says, “Well, maybe that will work. Can you see if you can convince them to join my band?” -Keith Olsen, 2011

Somehow Bruce Springsteen never worked a job in his life before he got signed in 1972, but if Stevie didn’t work in a “restaurant” Lindsey would have never been able to have gotten on a recording.

I got an email from FleetwoodMac.com announcing this release. That’s interesting to me since Lindsey’s no longer a member of FM.

I'm not trying to split hairs or be pedantic, but I think (if my memory is correct) we learned from the Lindsey lawsuit that "Fleetwood Mac" doesn't exist as a legal entity outside of each individual project/tour they have done. The McVie's/Fleetwood have ownership in the name, but there isn't a precise LLC that says these members are the current legal members of Fleetwood Mac etc.

The point being, he wasn't a "member" of Fleetwood Mac for the 2018 tour, but that's about it. It wouldn't be a legal conflict for Fleetwood Mac to promote this now.

I could be absolutely wrong about all of this, but I remember there being some surprise that they didn't have some kind of umbrella entity on paper.

The story changed with the reunion, when they were do things like “Behind the Music”. If we’re to believe everything said around that time, Fleetwood Mac didn’t exist after the Inauguration and Christine made a solo album.

However, the account from Mick’s 1990 book and Keith’s 2011 interview perfectly align. That phone call was between both of them, not Lindsey or Stevie, and that call ended with Mick telling Keith to convince them -both of them- to join Fleetwood Mac.

Plus, to my knowledge, there was never an accounting that suggests Mick asked Lindsey to join without Stevie. Lindsey might have said he wouldn’t join without Stevie, but the offer was never actually for just him.

Yep. Mick was interested in a guitarist and inquired about the guitarist. It was Keith who told him, hey they're a duo and they won't split that up. So Mick said ok ask them both. It's not really that complicated and it was never a major conflict for Mick. He'd have taken Lindsey alone but if they came as a duo he was ok with that. People, including members of the band, (shocking!) like to make it more dramatic than it was.

Lindsey worked as a studio and touring musician (he was on tour with the Everly Brothers when she wrote Landslide). He also for a time had a gig in a call center.

The reality is, if Lindsey had worked as a waiter and Stevie was in charge of producing and arranging their songs....well....they'd both still be waiting tables.

Him working on their songs was *working*. Sure it didn't pay the bills at that time, but it sure gave her the career she's had all these years so......

ETA: He was also the one who put all their songs together on his 4-track late at night in the coffee plant which got them the first deal. By her own accounts she sat there with him *crocheting* until he told her he needed her to put on her vocals.

ETA: And don't believe her account of having been a "cleaning lady" for their producer (Keith Olsen). They lived in his house rent free and she offered to clean as a form of payment. Per Keith, she wasn't much of a cleaning lady, she'd get her headscarf on and her bucket and mop and not do a very good job (despite her claims years later). She also put his car (his Mercedes?) in gear and left it and it went crashing down a hill into a house, so....yeah.

Also, the part where Mick says “Then I called [Fleetwood Mac’s business lawyer] Mickey Shapiro and said, "I met these guys and am asking them to be in the band” also suggests Christine needing to approve was also overly dramatized. If Christine’s approval factored in, wouldn’t Mick have called her, first? The reason to call the business manager first is to have him draw up contractual paperwork (the real primary reason for the meet up at the Mexican restaurant).

Fleetwood Mac was still in the middle of a lawsuit over who owned the name, so they needed to have the lineup settled before word spread about Bob. However, that’s not a very romantic story.

I think it's in the "Songbird" documentary, and I think it's Stevie who tells the story, but I've heard it a few times, Christine had veto power on Stevie, (2 ladies in a band, heaven forbid they don't get along) so if the "take them both" story is the truth and not "if you take me you have to take my girlfriend", does it hold, if Christine didn't like Stevie, they would have said no to Lindsey too?

Yes, I have an original. Bought it in the 70s pristine. Opens up with a photo of them on the inside standing (from the cover shoot, she is in her blouse) and it lists all the songs and their lyrics. She was listed as "Stevi" then.

Yes, that's on my copy as well.

If Chris had said no, one would imagine maybe Mick or whomever would have said something to Lindsey about hey would you join solo, he would have said no thanks, and S&L would have gone on and made their second album and FM would have looked for another guitarist.

By all accounts, of S&L, Stevie was far more amenable to joining FM, and had to sort of cajole or encourage or whatever Lindsey to consider it and why it could be good for them. (She has said years ago that they were already on the rocks in their romantic relationship, so personally I think having more space from Lindsey in the form of other musicians to work with in a band context was very appealing to her so she wasn't the one always in his crosshairs). I think she very much made it a point to be charming and friendly and all that with FM to ensure there were no issues with any of them, not just Chris. Now that I think about it, I don't recall anyone ever saying that they specifically said out loud to S&L that the dinner was sort of a trial to see how they all got along; I've always heard it presented as a convo that happened between the Brits beforehand. Maybe someone knows otherwise....

Again, take anything said after 1996 with a pound of salt. Parts of their story were exaggerated and others minimized (Billy who?). I remember a lot of us taking exception, especially “Behind the Music”.

None of us can forget that Stevie listened to all the Mac records, frontwards, backwards, sideways . . .in order to make the decision.

Stevie has commented that she was very quiet during the White recording, because she felt they had not wanted her and only wanted Lindsey. She did not want to rock the boat or make any demands, when her footing was unsure. But when her songs became popular, she could be her true self.

My thoughts: it's great that's it's finally getting released and I like that Rhino devoted a page to it's release. Usually I praise Rhino, but this is disappointing. You couldn't have added the singles to the CD? Instead you're charging $80 for the vinyl with singles and $40 for the vinyl? And they're sold out before most people even knew they were even available. Obviously snatched up by resellers hoping to make a buck. Ridiculous. I prefer the CD anyway and I'm sure it will sound great but no bonuses is extremely disappointing. Maybe L&S demanded a lot of money for the rights, so they're price gauging fans.

I suspect this is all leading up to an even more expensive box set in the next couple months with all the goodies to ensure that fans buy multiple copies. Especially since they realize the demand and media attention. I've always bought everything they release, but I'm drawing a line, especially at $80 single albums. I'm sure it won't stop most people.

I bought the original gatefold album in the bargain bin in the late 70's and was never that impressed with it and never understood the hype. There's some nice songs but lyrics like "Sunflowers and your face fascinate me" were cringeworthy even in the hippy era. For me, this is the end of era and my willingness to keep supporting such greed. With concert tickets costing hundreds to a thousand or more dollars I simply can't enjoy myself supporting acts at these prices, especially the aging acts that are waaayyyy past their prime. I don't get it.

Plus, to my knowledge, there was never an accounting that suggests Mick asked Lindsey to join without Stevie. Lindsey might have said he wouldn’t join without Stevie, but the offer was never actually for just him.

thank you! ugh i see such nonsense all over the place where people are saying how lindsey fought for stevie to be included, they didn't even want her, blah blah blah, when actually mick didn't seem to have any issue letting stevie join as long as the ladies got along. mick initially asked about the guitarist because the band needed a friggin guitarist. it wasn't any sinister plot to exclude poor stevie.

Can someone explain to me why so many of you jump to definitive conclusions?

...

I for one think there will be additional promotion and there will be appearances. What shape those take, I don't know. But this is a money making opportunity, and in my opinion, Steve, Lindsey, Mick, and Irving are likely to want to do their best to maximize that potential.

People are just stating their opinions and guesses at what is going to happen, just as you have here. Maybe some word it more definitively, but none of us actually knows.

I have one gatefold I got in the 90s in a used record store in Boston. There's a little writing on it, so I got it for $15. They had others that were more than triple the price.

The business model has changed. Artists make their living from concerts, not records. And for old artists, it's even worse. If they sold a lot, it would be a phenomenon. That's why they like to reissue deluxe editions, it's more sales attractive. Only true fans eagerly await and welcome new music, but it's a small market.

Rhino must conduct exhaustive market research to release albums that guarantee satisfactory revenue.

If Stevie release a new album, it won't sale that much. If she go on the road for supporting the album, probably a bit more than Lindsey's last album or SWS.

BN is a different case, but yes it could be a bit less than 100k. I hope I'm wrong. How much sold BuckVie? Wikipedia says 60K in UK, did it sell more in the US?

Unfortunately you are spot on. Not to mention many get their music from streaming not physical copies. Stevie will sell more of her new release if she gets it out now before her tour starts. People will pick it up at the show. As far as Buckingham Nicks if they get some of that PR around the September release date it may sell well. I still can’t believe how much press was given to this.

I still find it hilarious that so many stories about the possibility of a Buckingham Nicks reunion concert……….ah no, I don’t think so.

BN won't sell either.
It could chart on the Billboard 200 if they promote it closer to the release date.

Lindsey's last album didn't chart on the major cd/album chart in the US. Stevie's most recent three "singles" didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and The Lighthouse got a ton of promotion.

But people will love to buy a "black and white" cute photo covered album just to have it.

I think it's a waste and I think that BTM should get the rerelease treatment that White Album - Tango got since Stevie, Chris, Mick, and John were in that lineup. But I guess Warner thinks the money is in Stevie and Lindsey together.

They've been told she was traumatized by the naked album cover, they've been told Lindsey is cancel-worthy, they've been told how much of a struggle that period was for her. What I never quite understood is how she often tells the story like she was at some low budget photographers house in west Hollywood who turned out to be a creep. It was actually Waddy's brother. We know Waddy knew both Stevie and Lindsey pretty well by that point. Waddy roomed with them both in their first house (if my memory is correct) and played on the album. I know, it doesn't mean strange things can't happen in the company of people you trust. I get that.

It's proof that as a photographer you really should come prepared to discuss your vision for the project/photo shoot and should already had those discussions with everyone involved well before the day of the shoot. There should be no surprises. If she had prior knowledge of how she was going to be photographed, why would she bother spending money she barely had on a really nice blouse? Even if it was never, ever intended to make anyone uncomfortable - pulling a bait and switch in the middle of a photo shoot that included the removal of clothing - there's a level of "ick" that comes with that no matter what. The better move would have been to propose a new direction and say "go home, think about it etc" otherwise, we'll move on to a different idea.

Every time I hear Stephanie or see the title reminds me of the MTV Fanatic episode where Stevie drew a blank to "What is your favorite Lindsey song?" I totally agree. From what I’ve gathered over the years, Stevie wanted to push back on the idea but Lindsey got short-fused and impatient, so she acquiesced. If this is true, then it’s a very sad, upsetting story.

Still, it’s a very good photo—but, alas, an odd one for a duo’s debut. To the extent people still discuss it is a good sign, I guess. And it’s miles more tasteful than the Heroes cover!

Looking at the BN cover reminds me of the first Hall and Oates album on their second label, the 1975 self-titled one where they are wearing makeup. They had a high-end Italian photographer telling them they’d be immortalized with that cover. They were made notorious. But it, too, is a great photo.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be forced to make an on the spot decision as to whether or not I wanted to participate in that kind of photograph. It's easy to have a knee-jerk reaction and reference Stevie having the photo framed on her piano for the 1997 Harpers Baazar article and accuse her of changing her tune...but I think two truths can be true and held at the same time. It can be a meaningful and beautiful photo to Stevie today, but it can also represent a really difficult moment that was uncomfortable.

I don't think the photographer or Lindsey ever intended to approach it in a creepy way or have any kind of ill intentions. I certainly wasn't there, but it sounds like it was an on the spot decision that should of been handled in a much more thoughtful way.

I agree. If she felt she looked bad or hated the photo she would not be on board re-releasing it. It was her parents that were not crazy about the cover. But then again they were not thrilled with her music career at that point.
She spoke in detail about the cover on the Enchanted tour when introducing After The Glitter Fades. The song is about her and Lindsey going to Hollywood and trying to make it. She called the cover "the infamous cover" and chuckled. It was the entire Buckingham/Nicks process that hurt her not so much the cover. They had a glimmer of hope being lured away from Fritz to become a duo and make the album. But as the song suggests there are good and bad times trying to make it in the business but the good times outshine the bad because of her and his love for playing and performing. Had the album been a huge success maybe no one would have ever thought anything negative about the cover. I remember her talking about shopping for a really nice blouse for the cover only to find out all of her hard money was a waste because no one could see the blouse. She spoke of the financial loss over the cover and not being exploited. But maybe her parents felt different.

All I've ever heard is that they asked her to take her TOP off. I have never heard that she was asked to take EVERYTHING off. Wasn't she just topless??

She loves having sh&t to drama whine about. I am sure she was uncomfortable and would have preferred not taking her top off, especially around a photographer and maybe assistants or whatever.... but any telling of a story is embellished. I honestly doubt she was traumatized by it. I can totally imagine her feeling caught off guard and pressured to do something she wasn't comfortable with, and that's not cool.

My gawd, she, LITERALLY, has slept with more people than anyone I've ever known(and believe me, I've known some ho's). And she acts all the prude. Talk about a hypocrite.

I respect her for not wanting to pose naked as well, but history has shown that she likes to dramatize and change the narrative to the stories she tells so it's hard to really know how to felt at the time. :p

Agreed. She certainly exaggerates.

I will say that the finished product may be something she likes. Great result. It doesn't show anything. But posing, taking her top off in the studio in front of people may have been the worst part, the demeaning part. Her breasts were exposed and she wasn't expecting it. If it made her feel bad, objectified, I get it.

I was hoping that after the official announcement there would be some new interviews, appearances etc. So far that doesn't seem to be the case. The PR and hype leading up to it was on point, a chefs kiss. Then....nothing.

It wouldn't be Fleetwood Mac if it wasn't yet another massive, missed opportunity. At this point, this will be ancient news by September.

I think it's the "Barbra: The Music... The Mem'ries... The Magic!" Miami concert video when she explained what she was wearing in the A Star Is Born poster. She said... MUSK. And everybody laughed.

Now that they are in full promotion of the re release, Stevie could say something similar, it would have been wittier.

But exposing yourself to a sex partner isn’t the same as exposing yourself to people you’re not having sex with. Also, the thing about nudity is . . . it’s how you’re raised. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with being a prude. In Europe, public nudity is no big thing. In America, people aren’t comfortable with it. You could have a wild sex life, but still not want to go topless at the beach.

I have often wondered about FM, before they hit it big. How much privacy did they have? Christine has mentioned that it was hard to be alone with John because there was always a gang of other people around. And Stevie has talked about the car being so crowded that Chris had to sit on the instrument cases in the back seat. I wonder if they had to undress in front of each other on the road. I mean, it’s something you have to get used to.

Even though it seems it was the most expensive package. I understand those singles are different than the album version? Otherwise it wouldn't be worth it, would it?

So many of the things she's said though, make her come across as somewhat of a prude, yet her track record is anything but prudish.

I've often wondered what it was like being in FM, pre SN/LB. I'm sure they had fans, but can also imagine they could go shopping without getting mobbed.

Tell me about it. I'm a nudist, but ABSOLUTELY NOT an exhibitionist. Those are two different things. I sold my country house almost 3 years ago now, and man, do I miss watering the entire garden in the buff, first thing every morning.:D

there was an article around the time of the white album, I want to say People magazine but not sure it was around then, anyway the reporter went to the grocery store with Chris. She was loading the cart with beer and like ice cream and stuff and they were chatting while she shopped. No one seemed to recognize her. Maybe someone knows where a copy of that is. (It was also the interview where she made a cringey comment about how she attracted some lesbian fans). She was completely not prepped by a slick PR team. Same with the rest of the band in all those early interviews. They still seemed like normal people.

someone recently posted a link on social media to an old old interview with Mick and Lindsey around the time of the white album, and it was being shown to Stevie in recent years and she was commentating on it and saying how nice it was to see and how it was before they all got rich and famous and a bit "conceited"....
ETA: here's the link: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMd4IQxx1vr/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Her lack of self-reflection or self-awareness in what she says in this clip is just stunning....

And then just yesterday I saw a post somewhere else of some footage of one of the Tusk photo shoots where they are all wasted but Stevie most especially and she is just flitting around and she HANGS all over John and he crouches down to get away and she just keeps draping herself over him and he gets super annoyed....she then flits around by herself and then starts hanging all over Lindsey. Some of the comments were like "if she's not the center of attention for 5 minutes she can't handle it"

nudity seems to be no big thing in europe, but england seems a bit more uptight about it....? maybe it also depends on your individual comfort level. jenny fleetwood wrote in her book that when they moved to CA and swam in john mayall's pool, they got drunk and did 'naked underwater acrobatics'-- mick wouldn't come down and participate at all, but john surprised them by galloping down the path naked and jumping into the pool! and chris kept the string of her bikini top tied around her neck floating on top of the water as a last attempt at modesty lol.

there probably wasn't much privacy in those days before they hit it big and had fancy hotel rooms. or by that point if J&C did have 'alone time', they were drunk and annoying the crap out of each other. chris even said at benifold that it was an odd way to live, w/ everyone scattering to their own 'particular sections' but without very much privacy.

they prob did have to undress in front of each other on the road. i mean, didn't the 3 guys usually always share 1 dressing room? and the ladies prob had to also, at least in the early days.

do you remember where you saw where she said it was hard to be alone w john because there was always a gang of people around? i'd be curious to read that, it doesn't ring a bell. altho it makes sense. and all that constant forced togetherness doesn't exactly make you want to jump each other's bones

That was the 77 rolling stone article by cameron crowe when they were on the cover, when they were interviewed individually and talking about their relationships etc. in those days they may have been able to still shop in relative anonymity. i remember in interview w john from maybe 1975 where i think he mentioned how he could still go wherever he wanted, but that the women were beginning to get recognized.

They are all so wasted in those tusk photo shoots, but stevie in particular seems to be a little annoying at times, wandering off, hanging all over the others...at times john seemed amused and other times he seemed like he'd def had enough!

At one point Chris has to grab Stevie and tell her to get back in place during the photo shoot.

I will look for the old interview with Chris. She said something about not being able to be alone with John. I think she may have called him her old man. But I believe she was discussing the days of touring before BN.

a LITTLE annoying???

she seems a total PITA thru the whole thing.... wasted out of her gourd and delusional that it is all about HER.

John seems majorly irritated by her at the beginning where she's literally draped over him and he has to crouch down and maneuver to get out from under her. Later she comes back like a pesky mosquito he has to keep swatting away through the rest of it.

i love how once he crawls away she's off to the side flouncing by herself and a few times mick looks over like should I at least point her towards the camera? She eventually starts draping herself around Lindsey like he's just a prop.

Conceited doesn't even begin to address it.

thanks for looking...

It had to have been awful, being together too much in crappy circumstances and working each other's nerves, but if you don't have "quality" (i.e. not irritable and drunk/trashed off your *ss) time alone to reconnect in a positive way and discuss issues that might need to be discussed so you're both on the same page...that's not good either. and with both of them drinking, those fights were doozies. They did sooo much better when they didn't live together anymore. (although i think chris recognized that far more than john ever did.)

I think the album cover is fine. Its artistic IMHO. Both are topless but we don't see either of their nipples. It sort of implies this couple/duo are equals. Go back in the time machine. I Am Woman topped the charts 9 months earlier. Women were burning their bras. Marcia Brady was involved in a women's lib episode on the Brady Bunch. Its not like she is showing cleavage to be sexy. The way it was arranged was very tasteful and not selling sex IMHO. I found this quote from Stevie about the cover.
In 1973, Nicks spent $111 ($786 in 2024 dollars) on a white blouse for the cover shoot, but the photographer, Jimmy Wachtel, and Buckingham coerced Nicks to take her top off when shooting the cover. Nicks later recounted:

I was crying when we took that picture. And Lindsey was mad at me. He said, 'You know, you're just being a child. This is art.' And I'm going, 'This is not art. This is me taking a nude photograph with you, and I don't dig it.'

I thought, 'Who are you? Don't you know me?' ... I couldn't breathe. But I did it because I felt like a rat in a trap.

Everyone in Fleetwood Mac was a whore. Maybe not Chris and Lindsey but each of them had major dysfunctional relationships and they would have been better off being a whore. Mick was a coke whore. Mick and John were groupie whores. Stevie was a coke whore falling into quick sexual relationships because of being up all night on coke. Stevie said herself that she would party the longest and hardest and in those moments whoever is still up sort of hooks up together. This is why I totally believe Stevie and Dennis hooked up. Both of them were out of control. Stevie hooked up and married her best friend's husband just months after her death only to then hook up with Joe Walsh when she was still married. It was the 1970s were free love and drugs were in full effect. Just about everyone was a whore especially if you were heavily into drugs and rock and roll. The craziest truthful statement Stevie ever made was that her best friend Sara saved her from being in a relationship with Mick because Mick dumped her and made the moves on Sara.
Being a whore can be a good thing. Its a little dangerous today but when you are young I see it as a positive attribute rather than a negative one. But I know Stevie is a woman and its a negative connotation towards women but men get away with it. You act like being a whore is a bad thing. I command you bwboy to embrace your inner whoredom. Don't let that golden hair get in your way.

"The cost to remaster an old song for Blu-ray surround sound varies greatly, depending on several factors, but it can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Factors influencing the cost include the complexity of the original recording, the extent of restoration needed, and the desired level of audio quality"

So depending in how much is "several" thousands, probably it is not big deal. Then the decision lays on the forecast of how many people would buy it in that format.

Yes, when we see the live footage, it’s shocking how obvious her need for attention really is. However—and this is a big however—all of her movements and poses made for excellent photographs. Of all the FM members, she seems most dialed in to getting a result from the photographs. I love the photos that came from that shoot. On many of them, Stevie appears to be seducing the camera. Yes, she’s wasted as all get out (I suspect they all were) but some of her dramatic gestures, etc, I think were engineered as poses, knowing she’d be caught in a still frame.

Yes, and she liked to do that. And let's face it, she is photogenic. I just googled (images) "fleetwood mac magazine cover" and it appears covers from different years. If there are covers with just one member, is mostly Stevie. Just a few with just Lindsey or Chris, and I had to scroll down a lot (again, googling Fleetwood Mac, not a member name).

Yes, she likes being a star, but it's worked for her. I'm not saying it should be that way, but statistically, she's been the most popular. And general public mostly pays attention to looks and photos, and doesn't know the whole story behind a celebrity.

I will use the word 'whore' as someone who can't control themselves around something. And by that definition, Chris was a wine whore, and a toxic man whore and Lindsey was a coke whore for a while and clearly a control whore. And he was a toxic personal relationships whore. He said it best himself when he said the people you get in relationships with are a reflection of where you're at at the time, and he got involved with some doozies. Stevie was a fame whore, Mick was a money whore. John was a booze whore and a boat whore. Their sex lives were another thing.

I suspect everything that didn't happen with this release was more about the dysfunctional if not outright toxic relationship between the two principals and their teams not agreeing to much--if any-- further materials more than about Rhino's position on any of it.

Stevie's whole goal in life was indeed to be a STAR. And she did whatever (whoever?) she had to to make that happen. Not a criticism; just an observation. So yeah she understood the assignment and WORKED it. Lindsey always had a more ambivalent relationship with fame; the McVie's were so quintessentially British about it and found it kind of embarrassing (fame that is) and annoying, though Mick loved it (though he never got it just from being himself but rather by being part of the band).

Also remember, Stevie, once she started seeing the photos that Herbie and others took of her understood very very quickly how she translated onto film and really studied it. She was up coked out of her head all night taking polaroids of herself because of ego, but...also, she put in all those hours and hours taking pics of herself studying them and figuring out how to get more of those kinds of images. She latched onto the fact that image counts for more than anything most of the time. She manufactured a persona for herself. It's always funny when the real Stevie slips through at times... like earlier discussions about her portraying herself as modest, and even prudish when we know her personal life was anything but. I remember when I first discovered she smoke cigarettes (eeeewwww) and swore like a sailor. TOTALLY not the image of the delicate, fragile innocent that she worked hard to create. She for decades has perpetuated this notion that she really just craves a quiet life, up on a cliff overlooking the sea with just her books and her sketches and her piano. Same woman essentially got that during COVID and bitched about how boring and lonely and awful it was... because reality is she lives for attention and people crowding around her telling her how great she is and whatever. "all i want to do is write songs" and yet ...two years of lockdown and how many songs did she write?? She needs big drama and big dramatic relationships to fuel her writing. I still love the statement she said to Rolling Stone not long ago "I worked hard to be who the public thinks I am"... which is her way of saying I worked hard to create this persona and make you think I am a certain person.....

She's also the best of them in spinning her responses in interviews to create the narrative and image she wants. She knows most reporters/interviewers do little to no research and will just print whatever she says. She has even used that to threaten the band on more than one occasion to get what she wants from them (more than what's been published about).

At some point all of that became more important to her than writing good songs.

I've said it for almost a quarter of a century here, but I'd love to know her actual I.Q.

I haven’t a clue about her I.Q.
But I get where you’re coming from…

However, I’ve been listening to Fireflies a lot just lately…(don’t ask why, I don’t know)
She sure could sing…whatever her I.Q.

Did they release Frozen Love as a single for this? No vid for it on YT that I can see.

It never even occurred to me that Rhino/Warner might release a single from this thing. Ya never know. Most of the album doesn’t sound like anything you would hear on any radio station today, my inner spirit tells me, including the lengthy and hippie “Frozen Love.” The album is a proud relic of a long-ago time that doesn’t fit anywhere today except a collective scrapbook.

EXCEPT — “Stephanie.” I can imagine that being played (perhaps as a novelty) on at least two radio stations in Los Angeles. It’s the kind of melody (albeit instrumental) that makes for a great hook in people’s minds, even today. It’s also something that Lindsey could play on air if he visits any radio stations or does any TV. And Stevie wouldn’t need to be there!

A single like “Stephanie” isn’t intended to rip up the singles charts. It’s only for providing a sweet, hummable earworm of a very, very old — outdated — album.

You bring up some really good points. Staying up all night doing blow in a bathroom taking Polaroids of yourself is narcissistic if not a little mentally ill but we can blame it on the blow. She needed a camera on her and even in her out of orbit self she still thought she looked like a superstar and needed those camera flashes to remind her of it. She was not living in reality.

Yes—it is. The greatness of Frozen Love excluded, it’s a mostly charming, derivative set of songs arranged to play to an early-70s market. They were not ahead of their times. All signs (in retrospect) point to greater things to come, but that would require a setting change, and in ‘73 there was no indication (on record) that these two would be (or could be) what they became.

By comparison, a song like “Hypnotized” (recorded the same year as BN) sounds entirely new, perhaps even ahead of its time. In a different way, Just Crazy Love sounds like early 80s guitar-driven pop.

I was just reading an article that said one of the biggest mistakes Fleetwood Mac ever made was releasing Hypnotized as the B side to the single For Your Love. Hypnotized is polished just like a single should be and should have been released as the lead single. It had the sound of a single and is pretty much the song people relate to the album Mystery To Me. Its one of those....what if's.....

It could have been the band's first charting single in the US since "Oh Well". Whereas the current rules for Billboard allow for nearly any song to chart provided that they have are registered with unique URC and ISRC codes, only retail singles were allowed to chart in the 1970s. Had "Hypnotized" been issued as the A-side, I find it plausible that it could have done moderately well commercially. I also don't think that "For Your Love" was necessarily a poor choice for a single, but radio programmers were more interested in "Hypnotized". Upon its initial listen of Mystery to Me, the record label claimed that the album did not have a single, so Bob Weston suggested that they cover "For Your Love", which replaced "Good Things" in the track listing.

Perhaps even more detrimental was the aborted tour. Mystery to Me charted significantly lower than Penguin or Heroes, and the only reason I can think of is that they did not get a chance to properly promote the album. It got a negative review in RS as well, but that alone would not have sunk its immediate fortunes.

That two-three songs from Mystery stayed in the band’s rotation on the next few tours is proof that touring helped a lot: it went gold along with Bare Trees, which also featured longstanding songs in various setlists through ‘76.

But yes, “Hypnotized” had real radio potential. Sadly, so did “Remember Me” and “Did You Ever Love Me”, so who knows…

But only because it will fill the void where I had expected this release years ago ( back when I listened to FM related music)...

Sure it will be somewhat like the Tony Martin era Black Sabbath reissues by Warner, very basic and no thrills...

At setlist.fm it shows MTM dates from aug 24 1973. Mick wrote they stopped on oct 23 when they were in Nebraska. But setlist.fm shows more dates, they supposedly went to Atlanta in november; dates ends in feb 20 1974 (last shows in Canada). Were those shows played by the fake Fleetwood Mac?

The fake Fleetwood Mac tour started January 16, 1974 in Pittsburgh. Not sure how long it lasted but Joe Walsh saw them in Florida and commented that even though Mick was not there the band was kick ass and very tight. I believe Kiss opened for them a few dates. Its crazy to think but there was no social media and no MTV. The Mac were not on their album covers much either. Some knew from the first night but it took some time for word to get out the band was fake. Its one of rock's most incredible things to have a fake band using your name tour.

I wish there would be a Fake Fleetwood Mac reunion. I imagine some of them may not be alive. But any surviving member will do. I don't think there is any concrete interview of any member of this fascinating piece of rock n roll history. I think Mick said in his book like he did not know their names and did not even want to know their names. But apparently they were a great band. I think one of them went on to play in a famous band. But much of their existence is sketchy.
I want answers dammit.

Dave Wilkinson, the band's keyboardist, provided his perspective of the band in both Bob Brunning's book and the Rock Family Trees documentary. In the Bob Brunning book, he was very critical of Craig Collinge, who was according to Clifford Davis was meant to be the temporary drummer until Fleetwood was ready to join the other members of the fake Fleetwood Mac. As you mentioned above, Fleetwood has refuted this piece of information. I would be curious to hear footage from the fake Fleetwood Mac - Wilkinson remarked in the documentary that their band competently covered Fleetwood Mac's material.

Well...it looks like they're releasing the album and that's it. I would think by now if they were going to do some interviews together, we would be seeing them by now. Not even Rolling Stone has done an interview with either of them (that we know of) yet.

They had some really good PR hype and they're totally letting it fade away.

So far there's only those written notes and the billboard video. I thought there would be an interview with each separated, not together. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was nothing.

I'd like at least interviews with any of the personnel involved. Dashut, Waddy, etc. Is there any old interview with Keith about this album?

Unfortunately I don't think there is a whole lot from Keith. I don't think there was ever a comprehensive interview done before his passing that really concentrated on his years with them. There's a decent enough amount from different print sources/video clips (i.e. behind the music etc) that could be compiled - but to my knowledge, not a really solid in-depth conversation that focused on just B/N.

George Hawkins would of been a great person to talk to as well, but he passed back in 2018.

Here's Gary Hodges talking about what the legal issues were with the release back in 2012.

I think the biggest clarification is that although Stevie and Lindsey own the rights, Keith apparently owned the masters.

probably the best anyone has from Keith is in the Dave Grohl documentary about Sound City. When it came out I was pleasantly surprised just how much was about Stevie and Lindsey in it, especially the first part of it.

Lindsey said a few years back that Stevie had gotten possession of the masters, which it seems no one had been aware of up til then. He pointed to that as part of the game playing that goes on in dealing with her and her team.

Funny they don't talk so much about the owner of the studio, Joe I think was his name, and what a decent guy he was and generous with the use of the studio. I knew nothing about his role in their early days until I saw that documentary. He was ultimately done dirty by Rick Springfield, whom he also nurtured to stardom. Springfield talks about how bad he came to feel about that over time. He really screwed the guy out of any payback from his success.

I'm not an expert in music industry/business, but I thought the master tapes were always kept by the label. When I read that Stevie was upset with Mick because he didn't let her to include Silver Springs in Timespace, some ledgies posted here that actually it was Warner who didn't let her. So is it the label who actually finallt (or partially?) decides?

BigAl84

I have so many questions...

If they jointly owned the rights, how could Stevie obtain the masters from Keith without Lindsey's consent? Maybe he did sign off on it?

Is it remotely possible Stevie negotiated the purchase of the masters to the songs she wrote? I'm taking ownership of my half...Lindsey, you do you.

You would think that if they jointly owned the rights, they would both have to agree upon the transfer/sale of the masters and agree to where they are stored and cared for etc.

It was probably a smart move by Stevie's team if they decided to negotiate a deal with Keith while he was still alive. Trying to obtain the masters while his estate is being settled could easily been way more costly than anything Keith was initially asking for.

I think the difference with BN is that somehow after Polydor dropped them, the ownership of the masters shifted out of their hands (Polydors). I don't know how many years later Keith was able to obtain the masters etc. For whatever reason, Polydor or whatever company that eventually owned Polydor was willing to part with the masters, which seems relatively uncommon.

Does anyone know if the 1977 repress/reissue of Buckingham Nicks was released before Rumours hit the shelves? It's mind boggling that Polydor was willing to sell the masters in light of the massive success of Rumours.

It makes me wonder if all the initial deals were cut sometime in '76 before the white album took off. Polydor figured it was going to be another flop and didn't see any reason not to sell the masters.

Does anyone else have a recollection or remember when Buckingham Nicks showed up on the iTunes music store for like a day back in around 2012 or so? I think it was up for a short time and then someone at iTunes realized it was supposedly not an official release or something. It was taken down fairly quickly. I think some ledgies were able to download and burn it to CD before it was taken down.

Sometimes masters are leased to the label for a set period, then revert to the initial owner who, in this case, may have been Keith Olsen if he funded the album.

I'm sure I didn't buy the album at iTunes. Actually all the files I have are mp3, not m4a. But very good sound quality, 256 kbps. Te file dates are 2012, so now I wonder how I got them, probably somebody who did buy the album shared the files, maybe here? I can't remember.
